You can run a complete, searchable Wikipedia copy on your own network by downloading a Kiwix ZIM archive and serving it with kiwix-serve. The archive contains the offline content; Kiwix Reader opens it on one device, while kiwix-serve publishes it as a normal website that phones, tablets and computers can open in a browser.

A desktop, NAS or Raspberry Pi can host the service. The practical sequence is: select the right Wikipedia language and edition in the Kiwix catalog, record its current file size and edition date, download the ZIM to reliable storage, install Kiwix tools or the official container, start the server, and browse to the host’s LAN address.

What you are actually installing

Kiwix separates offline content from the software that displays it. Wikipedia is distributed as a ZIM file, a single archive containing the selected edition’s articles, media and indexes. Downloading the archive gives you the content, but it does not by itself create a website.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You then choose an access method:

  • Kiwix Reader is an application for opening ZIM files locally on one computer or mobile device.
  • kiwix-serve is a lightweight command-line HTTP server. It can publish one or many ZIM files, allowing other devices on the same network to use an ordinary web browser.

The server normally listens over HTTP/1.1 without SSL. That is suitable for a trusted home or classroom LAN, but it is not a secure public-facing web service. For a serious deployment exposed beyond the local network, Kiwix recommends placing a reverse proxy in front of it.

Plan storage before downloading

Wikipedia archives are large, and the required disk space depends on the language, edition and the flavour you select. Kiwix publishes Wikipedia files in three flavours, so two downloads described as “Wikipedia” may have very different sizes and media coverage. Kiwix’s own guidance is blunt: file size is always an issue when downloading such large content.

Choose the edition in the catalog

  1. Open the current Kiwix Library/catalog.
  2. Filter for Wikipedia and choose the language you need.
  3. Compare the available flavours and editions. Read the displayed edition date and file size; both can change as new snapshots are produced.
  4. Confirm that the archive fits on the host’s internal disk or external SSD, leaving free space for the operating system, logs and future downloads.

Do not rely on a size quoted in an old guide. Record the catalog’s current date and size in your deployment notes so you know exactly which snapshot is installed.

Keep the download verifiable

Save the ZIM to durable local storage rather than a temporary downloads directory. Keep its original filename and any checksum or verification metadata supplied with the download. A checksum lets you detect an incomplete or corrupted transfer before troubleshooting the server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use a filesystem with enough free space for the complete file; a nearly full disk can make a successful download appear to fail near the end.
  • Avoid storing the only copy on a removable drive that is frequently unplugged.
  • Back up the ZIM if the archive would be difficult or expensive to download again.

Choose a host

kiwix-serve is multiplatform and lightweight. Kiwix documents operation on desktop systems, Raspberry Pi hardware (including Raspberry Pi Zero) and NAS appliances. Pick the host according to storage, power and how many people need access.

Host Upfront cost Storage expansion Power and portability Maintenance Best fit
Laptop or desktop Uses hardware you already own; new purchase cost varies Internal disk plus USB storage Higher power than a small board; easy to move Low if the computer is already maintained Occasional use, testing and a single household
NAS appliance Varies by enclosure and installed drives Designed for additional or replaceable disks Usually always-on; not very portable Moderate; update the host and monitor storage Shared family or organization storage
Raspberry Pi Board, power supply, case and storage are separate items microSD, USB SSD or network storage Low power and compact Moderate; protect the filesystem and enable restart on boot A small, dedicated local server
Kiwix Hotspot Current price and contents vary Determined by the appliance’s installed storage Portable, assembled unit Low compared with building and configuring a host Plug-and-play offline access

A Raspberry Pi 5 is a practical compact host, but the board alone may not include storage, power or a case. Match the storage medium to the selected ZIM edition rather than buying a fixed capacity first. Kiwix describes its Hotspot as an optimized, plug-and-play device built on Raspberry Pi 5 hardware; verify current availability and contents when purchasing.

Download the ZIM archive

  1. In the Kiwix catalog, select the Wikipedia language, flavour and edition.
  2. Check the displayed archive size against the host’s available space.
  3. Start the download and wait for it to complete before moving the file.
  4. Retain the original filename and checksum metadata, if provided.
  5. Optionally verify the checksum with your operating system’s hash utility. The exact command depends on whether the catalog supplies an MD5, SHA-1 or SHA-256 value; use the same algorithm named in the metadata.
  6. Place the verified file in a dedicated directory, such as /data/zim on Linux.

You can keep several archives in the same directory—for example, different languages or a separate Wiktionary snapshot. The server can present multiple ZIM files from one process.

Install Kiwix on a Linux host

On Linux distributions that package Kiwix, install the kiwix-tools package using the distribution’s normal package manager. Package availability and version names vary by distribution, so use the repository configured for your operating system. If your distribution does not provide a current package, use Kiwix’s official container image instead.

Create a readable archive directory

Put the ZIM files in a directory the service account can read. For example:

sudo mkdir -p /data/zim
sudo cp /path/to/downloaded-file.zim /data/zim/

Use your actual path and filename. A read-only permission model is preferable because the server only needs to read the archives.

Start the simplest server

From a shell on the host, run:

kiwix-serve -p 80 /data/zim/*.zim

The -p 80 option selects TCP port 80. The wildcard passes every ZIM in the directory, so adding another archive requires restarting the process unless you use a separate service configuration. If port 80 is already occupied or you do not have permission to bind to a privileged port, choose an unoccupied high port, such as:

kiwix-serve -p 8080 /data/zim/*.zim

Leave the terminal open while testing. The process output can reveal a bad path, an unreadable file or a port conflict.

Run Kiwix with Docker

Kiwix publishes an official container image, ghcr.io/kiwix/kiwix-serve. The container listens on port 8080. Mount the directory containing your archives and publish a host port to the container port:

docker run -d
  --name kiwix
  -v /data/zim:/data:ro
  -p 8080:8080
  ghcr.io/kiwix/kiwix-serve /data/*.zim

Here, /data/zim is the host directory and /data is its read-only path inside the container. Open port 8080 on the host. If you want users to browse with the conventional HTTP port, map another host port to 8080, for example -p 80:8080, provided that port 80 is free and your Docker setup allows it.

Container details to check when diagnosing a failure:

  • docker ps confirms whether the container is running.
  • docker logs kiwix shows startup errors and path or permission problems.
  • Confirm that the host directory contains the ZIM before starting the container.
  • Keep the volume mounted read-only unless you have a specific reason to let the container write to it.

Pin a tested image version for a controlled deployment rather than changing versions unexpectedly. If you use the image’s latest tag, review updates before applying them.

Connect from another device

  1. Find the host’s LAN address. On a desktop, use the operating system’s network settings; on Linux, commands such as ip address show assigned addresses.
  2. From a phone, tablet or computer on the same network, open a browser.
  3. Enter http://HOST-IP/ when the service uses port 80, or http://HOST-IP:8080/ when it uses port 8080. Replace HOST-IP with the actual address, such as 192.168.1.25.
  4. Select a listed ZIM and search or browse its articles.

Use the host’s LAN address, not localhost; localhost points back to the device where the browser is running. If the page works on the host but not on another device, check that both devices are on the same network and that the host firewall allows the chosen TCP port.

Make the address predictable

Home routers often change DHCP addresses. Create a DHCP reservation for the host so it receives the same LAN address after a reboot. A static address configured on the host can also work, but it must match the router’s address plan and avoid conflicts.

Make the service start after reboot

The one-line command is ideal for a test, not for a dependable appliance. Configure your operating system’s service manager to launch kiwix-serve at boot, use the correct archive directory and restart it if the process exits. The exact unit-file syntax depends on the Linux distribution, so keep these values explicit in whatever service definition you create:

Security and network boundaries

By default, this is a local HTTP service. Do not expose the bare listener directly to the public Internet: Kiwix states that kiwix-serve speaks HTTP/1.1 without SSL. If remote access is genuinely required, put an HTTPS reverse proxy in front of it, restrict access with authentication and firewall rules, and keep the Kiwix process on a private interface.

  • Use a trusted LAN or an isolated classroom network for ordinary home use.
  • Do not forward the Kiwix port from your router unless you have designed and secured the entire remote-access path.
  • Keep the host operating system, container runtime and reverse proxy updated.
  • Separate guest Wi-Fi from the server network if visitors should not reach the archive.

Kiwix Reader versus Kiwix Server

Question Kiwix Reader kiwix-serve
Primary purpose Read ZIM files on the device where the app is installed Share ZIM files over a network through HTTP
Other devices need an app? Yes, each device opens its own local copy No; clients use a normal web browser
Host requirement Any supported desktop or mobile device with local storage Always-on desktop, NAS, Raspberry Pi or similar host
Multiple archives Managed within the app Pass one or many ZIM paths when starting the server
Best use Travel or personal offline reading Shared household, classroom or community LAN access

They are complementary, not competing archive formats. The same ZIM can be opened directly in Reader or made available through the server.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The command says the program is not found

Install the kiwix-tools package from your operating system’s repositories, or switch to the documented Docker image. Confirm the executable is on the service user’s PATH.

The server starts but lists no archives

Check the absolute path, filename extension and read permissions. A shell wildcard that matches nothing may be passed literally. List the directory first and run the command with the exact ZIM filename to isolate the problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Port 80 is unavailable

Another web service may already be using it, or the operating system may require elevated privileges. Stop the conflicting service, choose port 8080, or map a different host port in Docker. Include the non-default port in the browser URL.

The host works locally but not from a phone

  • Verify the phone is on the same LAN rather than an isolated guest network.
  • Use the host’s LAN IP, not localhost.
  • Allow the selected TCP port through the host firewall.
  • Check that the server is bound to the LAN interface and has not been restricted to loopback.

Pages are slow or the host runs out of space

Confirm that the selected ZIM fits the storage medium and that the disk is not nearly full. Large archives benefit from SSD or other responsive storage. If several languages are installed, remove unused snapshots or move them to a larger drive.

The service disappears after a reboot

Run it under the host’s service manager rather than an interactive shell. Ensure the archive disk is mounted before the service starts, and configure a restart policy.

The download may be corrupt

Compare the downloaded file’s checksum with the catalog metadata when available. If it differs, download the archive again before investigating server software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Maintenance checklist

  • Record each archive’s language, flavour, edition date and catalog-reported size.
  • Check the available disk space before downloading a replacement snapshot.
  • Keep the original filename and verification metadata.
  • Back up irreplaceable ZIM files.
  • Test browser access from a second device after host, router or firewall changes.
  • Apply operating-system, container and reverse-proxy updates during a planned maintenance window.
  • Recheck the LAN address reservation if users report that bookmarks no longer work.

Which setup should you choose?

Use a laptop or desktop when

You already have a computer that is powered on during reading sessions, want the fastest setup, or are evaluating a ZIM before buying dedicated hardware. Start the server manually and shut it down when finished.

Use a NAS when

The archive belongs alongside other shared files, the NAS is already always on, and you want centralized storage with room for multiple editions. Verify that the NAS operating system can run Kiwix tools or containers.

Use a Raspberry Pi when

You want a quiet, low-power appliance dedicated to offline information. Raspberry Pi 5 is a practical compact host; budget separately for power, case and storage, and choose storage based on the exact ZIM edition.

Use a Kiwix Hotspot when

You want an assembled, portable appliance instead of selecting a board, storage and software yourself. Confirm the current model, included ZIM files, availability and price at the time of purchase.
