The safest workflow is to create a local recording while you stream, keep the platform replay enabled, and download or export that replay as soon as the broadcast ends. Twitch requires you to enable past-broadcast storage and then offers individual downloads or YouTube exports. YouTube can archive streams automatically only when they meet its length conditions, and its owner-download tools may provide a reduced-resolution MP4 rather than the original livestream master. Kick replays expire after a shorter, account-dependent period; its current help documentation describes external download methods rather than a built-in download button.

The steps below cover the exact menus, retention deadlines, quality limitations, and recovery choices for your own broadcasts. Platform policies and interfaces can change, so check the linked help pages when you set up a long-term archive.

What to do before you go live

A platform replay is a convenience copy, not a permanent archive. A setting can be disabled, a network interruption can prevent a replay from being finalized, or the platform can delete it when its retention window closes. Use three layers whenever the broadcast matters:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Enable the platform’s replay or archive feature. This protects you if your local recording fails.
  2. Record locally during the broadcast. Your encoder or streaming application should write a file to the computer or another attached drive.
  3. Make a second copy after the stream. Copy the finished file to a separate drive or backup destination so one hardware failure does not remove every copy.

A portable external SSD is useful for moving or storing stream files, but it does not replace enabling platform storage or recording locally. The official guidance cited here does not establish a required capacity, model, cloud provider, download speed, or file-integrity result; choose storage according to your own bitrate, stream length, and archive plans.

Seagate 2TB Portable Hard Drive | USB 3.0 (STGX2000400) | Everyday HDD storage. Plug-and-play backup. Windows & macOS. Adobe CC trial included. 1-Year Warranty
  • Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Run a quick preflight check

  • Confirm that the platform account is the one you intend to use.
  • Open the platform’s archive setting and verify that it is enabled, rather than assuming a previous session left it on.
  • Start a short private or test broadcast when changing encoders, networks, or account settings, then confirm that a replay appears.
  • Check free local storage before a long session. A recording that stops when the drive fills is not a backup.
  • If you capture separate audio tracks, verify that the recording actually contains them before relying on the file for editing.

How Twitch VOD downloads work

Twitch’s help document, “On-Demand Content on Twitch,” says past-broadcast storage is not enabled by default. You must turn it on before the stream. Twitch also gives each account category a finite retention period, so a saved VOD should be treated as a deadline-driven working copy.

Enable Store Past Broadcasts

  1. Sign in to Twitch and open the Creator Dashboard.
  2. Open Settings, then Stream (the page Twitch labels Stream Settings in its workflow).
  3. Turn on Store Past Broadcasts.
  4. Save the setting and, if possible, verify it again before starting the actual broadcast.

Twitch notes that a stream can still fail to save when configuration is incompatible or the network is unstable. Enabling the switch is therefore necessary but not a guarantee that every broadcast will become a VOD.

Find and download an individual Twitch VOD

  1. After the broadcast ends, open Creator Dashboard → Content → Video Producer.
  2. Locate the saved video in the list.
  3. Open the menu beside that video and choose Download.
  4. Wait for the file to finish downloading, then open it locally and check that the expected duration, video and audio are present.

Twitch supports individual downloads, not a whole-account download. Its help page explicitly states: “Twitch does not offer the option to bulk download your videos.” If you have a backlog, sort it by importance and download the most valuable broadcasts before their deadlines.

Export a Twitch VOD to YouTube

  1. In Twitch, open Settings → Connections.
  2. Connect the YouTube account that should receive the export.
  3. Return to Creator Dashboard → Content → Video Producer.
  4. Open the menu for one VOD and choose Export, then follow Twitch’s prompts.

This is still an individual-video workflow. Do not assume that connecting the accounts creates an automatic, permanent mirror of future broadcasts.

Twitch retention deadlines

The current Twitch help article lists these limits (Twitch, accessed 2026):

Account category Stated VOD retention What to do
Other broadcasters 7 days Download or export within the week.
Affiliates 14 days Schedule an archive check within two weeks.
Partners, Prime, and Turbo users 60 days Use the longer window, but still archive on a regular schedule.

Twitch also says a vertical VOD version expires after 7 days. The horizontal version then remains for the account’s ordinary retention period shown above. If a vertical presentation matters to you, download it separately instead of assuming the horizontal replay is an equivalent file.

Twitch audio and other download caveats

Twitch’s Audio Recognition system can mute portions of a VOD. The muted audio remains muted in the downloaded video, so downloading later cannot restore that track. Keep a local recording if you need an editable source or want to preserve audio that the platform version may alter.

How to save a YouTube livestream

YouTube’s “Archive live streams” guidance says livestreams shorter than 12 hours can be archived automatically, recommends recording a local archive as a backup, and warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” A 12-hour stream is therefore a hard planning boundary, not a target to approach casually.

Seagate Portable 1TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PlayStation, & Xbox, 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX1000400) , Black
  • Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Plan around the 12-hour capture limit

  • Keep broadcasts below 12 hours when you need a dependable automatic archive.
  • For marathon events, split the schedule into separate broadcasts where practical rather than relying on one stream that might exceed the limit.
  • Record locally regardless of duration. YouTube itself recommends a local archive because automatic capture can fail.
  • After ending the stream, check YouTube Studio for the replay before deleting or reusing the local file.

YouTube Studio lets the creator adjust an archive’s visibility or delete it. Those controls change who can see the replay; they do not turn the platform copy into an independent backup.

Download an uploaded YouTube video

YouTube’s owner-download help page documents two routes for videos uploaded to your account:

  1. Open YouTube Studio and locate the video in your content list.
  2. Use the video’s menu to choose the download option and save the MP4 locally.
  3. For a complete account export, use Google Takeout and select YouTube data before creating the archive.

The cited YouTube documentation describes MP4 downloads at 720p or 360p depending on the video’s size. It does not promise that an owner download preserves the original livestream master, every available quality variant, separate audio tracks, or the exact encoder output you recorded locally. If quality or editability matters, retain the local recording as the authoritative source.

How to download a Kick replay

Kick’s Help Center says a replay appears after a livestream ends, but its May 21, 2026 article gives each channel type a short retention period and a replay-count limit.

Rank #4
Seagate Portable 4TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0, 1-Year Rescue | Everyday HDD storage. Plug-and-play backup. Windows & macOS. Adobe CC trial included. 1-Year Warranty

  • The available storage capacity may vary.
Kick channel status Replay retention Replay limit
Verified Up to 30 days Up to 30 replays
Non-verified Up to 7 days Up to 16 replays

Those limits mean a Kick creator should copy important broadcasts immediately, especially on a non-verified channel. A replay can disappear because it reached its age limit or because the account reached its replay allowance.

Kick’s documented external methods

Kick’s May 22, 2026 download article lists third-party sites, including Kicklet and Streams Charts, and also describes a manual method based on finding the VOD’s m3u8 playlist in browser developer tools. Kick’s mention of those methods is documentation of possible routes, not a first-party built-in download control or a safety endorsement.

Use an external downloader cautiously

  • Open only the replay you own or are authorized to save.
  • Do not enter your Kick password, session cookies, or payment details into an unfamiliar downloader.
  • Check the destination domain, HTTPS connection, file extension, and download prompts before accepting anything.
  • Scan the resulting file and avoid executables or “player” installers offered as a condition of downloading video.
  • Confirm that the downloaded file plays before allowing the Kick replay to expire.

The m3u8 route is intended for technically comfortable readers. A browser’s developer tools can expose many network requests; identify the playlist associated with the video rather than copying an unrelated request, and expect the exact interface to vary by browser and Kick’s player implementation. Because Kick’s article and external tools can change, recheck the current Help Center instructions before relying on this route.

Platform comparison at a glance

Platform Archive setup Retention stated in the cited help Download or export scope Quality and backup warning
Twitch Enable Store Past Broadcasts before streaming. 7 days for other broadcasters; 14 days for Affiliates; 60 days for Partners, Prime, and Turbo users. Vertical VODs expire after 7 days. One VOD at a time from Video Producer; individual export to connected YouTube. No official bulk download. Audio muted by Twitch’s Audio Recognition remains muted in the downloaded file. Keep a local recording.
YouTube Automatic archive can capture streams shorter than 12 hours; local recording recommended. The cited guidance does not give a general replay-retention number. A stream over 12 hours may not be captured at all. Owner MP4 download; Google Takeout for all uploaded videos. Documented owner downloads are 720p or 360p depending on file size; original-master preservation is not promised.
Kick Replay appears after the stream; no first-party download control is established in the cited article. Up to 30 days and 30 replays for verified channels; 7 days and 16 replays for non-verified channels. Kick documents third-party sites and a manual m3u8 playlist route. External tools are time-sensitive and not safety-validated by Kick’s mention. Keep a local file.

A dependable post-stream backup routine

  1. End the broadcast cleanly. Leave the platform open long enough for processing to begin.
  2. Confirm that the replay exists. On Twitch, check Creator Dashboard → Content → Video Producer; on YouTube, check Studio; on Kick, check the replay area after processing.
  3. Download the platform copy immediately. Do not wait for the retention deadline, particularly for Twitch general broadcasters and non-verified Kick channels.
  4. Test the file. Play the beginning, a middle section, and the end. Check duration, picture, dialogue, game audio, and synchronization.
  5. Rename it consistently. Include the date, platform, stream title, and a segment number if the broadcast was split.
  6. Create a second copy. Store it on a separate drive or backup destination. A second copy should not live only in the same computer folder as the first.
  7. Record the source and limitations. Note whether the file is a local recording, a Twitch download, a YouTube MP4, a Takeout archive, or an external Kick capture, and preserve the original file when editing.

Suggested file naming pattern

A consistent name such as 2026-10-16_platform_stream-title_part-01 makes sorting and deduplication easier. Keep the platform and date in the name even when your folders are already separated; folders get reorganized, while filenames travel with the files.

When a replay is missing or incomplete

Twitch shows no VOD

  • Recheck that Store Past Broadcasts was enabled before the stream, not after it ended.
  • Consider whether the network failed or the stream configuration was incompatible; Twitch identifies both as possible reasons a broadcast may not save.
  • Look for a local recording. If it exists, preserve it before troubleshooting the platform copy.
  • If the VOD is present but audio is muted, understand that Twitch’s downloaded version will retain that mute; use your local source for editing where legally permitted.

YouTube replay is absent

  • Check whether the broadcast exceeded 12 hours. YouTube warns that streams beyond that length may not be captured at all.
  • Allow processing time, then check YouTube Studio rather than relying only on a public channel page.
  • Find the local recording and verify it before deleting temporary files.

Kick replay has expired

For a non-verified channel, the stated window is only 7 days; for a verified channel, it is up to 30 days. Once the replay is gone, a platform-side recovery is not established by the cited Help Center pages. Your practical recovery options are a local recording, a second backup, or a copy you already downloaded through an authorized method.

The downloaded file will not play

  • Check that the download completed rather than ending with a partial file.
  • Compare the file size with the expected duration; an unusually small file can indicate an interrupted transfer.
  • Try a current media player and copy the file again if the first transfer was interrupted.
  • Do not delete the source replay or local recording until the replacement file has been tested.

Quality, ownership, and reuse boundaries

A platform download and a local recording are not automatically identical. Twitch’s file may include Audio Recognition mutes. YouTube documents 720p or 360p owner downloads depending on file size and does not promise the original master. Kick’s external methods can produce whatever rendition the player exposes, but the cited documentation does not establish a fixed resolution, codec, or completeness guarantee. Keep the local recording when you need the highest-confidence editing source.

This guide is about saving your own broadcasts. Downloading another creator’s stream, bypassing access controls, or reusing music and other people’s content can raise permission, copyright, privacy, and platform-policy issues. A copy on your drive does not grant additional rights to publish or monetize it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to choose your archive priority

If time is limited, prioritize files using the deadline and the likelihood that you can recreate the content:

  1. First: broadcasts with no local recording, because the platform copy may be the only remaining source.
  2. Next: Twitch broadcasts approaching 7 or 14 days and Kick broadcasts approaching 7 days.
  3. Then: vertical Twitch VODs approaching their 7-day expiry.
  4. After that: high-value events, collaborations, or streams with footage that cannot be recreated.
  5. Finally: routine broadcasts that still have a local recording and a longer platform window.

For a new setup, the simplest reliable habit is to start local recording before you go live, confirm the platform archive setting, and perform the download-and-test routine immediately after ending the stream. That workflow avoids treating a seven-, fourteen-, thirty-, or sixty-day replay window as if it were permanent storage.
