Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click OpenVPN, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
Run the download command on your computer, not in a terminal connected to the VPS. With OpenSSH, use scp user@VPS-IP:/path/to/client.ovpn .; add the uppercase -P option only if the VPS uses a non-default SSH port. First confirm the profile’s location on the VPS and make sure the account you use can read it.
Download the file with scp
scp copies a file over the SSH connection. Open a terminal on the computer where you want the profile saved, then run a command in this form:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
scp user@VPS-IP:/path/to/client.ovpn .Replace user with your VPS login name, VPS-IP with its IP address or hostname, and /path/to/client.ovpn with the profile’s actual path on the server. The final dot means “save in the current local folder.” You can choose a different local folder by replacing the dot with its path.
For example, if the file is /home/user/client.ovpn on a server at example.com, run this on your computer:

scp user@example.com:/home/user/client.ovpn .A prompt may ask you to authenticate to the VPS. After the transfer completes, the file should be in the local folder from which you ran the command. The command-line form and the meaning of its options are documented in the OpenBSD scp manual.
Use a non-default SSH port when needed
If SSH on your VPS listens on a port other than 22, specify it with uppercase -P, followed by the port number:
scp -P 2222 user@example.com:/home/user/client.ovpn .Use the SSH port configured for your server; 2222 is only an example. If SSH uses port 22, leave out -P. Be careful with capitalization: lowercase -p is a different option, used to preserve file times and modes, not to set the port.
Choose where the local copy goes
The destination is the last part of the command. A dot saves the file in the terminal’s current directory. If you want a specific location, give that local path instead, for example:

scp user@example.com:/home/user/client.ovpn /local/path/Use a destination folder that already exists, and make sure you can write to it. On Windows, an OpenSSH terminal such as PowerShell can run scp; use a local Windows path for the destination if you do not want to save in the current directory. If you are unsure where that is, check the terminal’s current folder before starting the transfer.
Find the .ovpn profile on the VPS
The remote path in the command must match the profile’s actual location. Installer scripts often put a generated profile in a user’s home directory, but the location depends on the installer and how it was run. If you are already connected to the VPS, check for profiles in the account’s home directory with:
ls ~/*.ovpnIf the installer ran as root, the file may instead be under /root. A profile created for another user may be in that user’s home directory. Once you have located it, use the full remote path after the colon in your local scp command. For instance, if the file is /root/client.ovpn, the remote part is root@VPS-IP:/root/client.ovpn—provided you are permitted to log in as root and the server allows that login.
A VPS setup guide from Liquid Web illustrates the home-directory pattern with a profile named myvpnuser.ovpn: How to run a private VPN server on your VPS. Treat that as an example rather than a universal location or filename; your own installer may use different names and paths.

Use an SFTP client instead of a terminal
If you prefer a graphical file-transfer program, connect to the VPS using SFTP, enter the server host, SSH port, and username, authenticate, then locate the .ovpn file and copy it to a folder on your computer. WinSCP and FileZilla are examples of SFTP clients. The exact screens and labels can vary by program and version, so use the connection details supplied for your VPS rather than relying on a particular menu label.
SFTP is the appropriate transfer choice here; do not use an unencrypted file-transfer method for a profile that may include client key material. An SFTP connection uses the server’s SSH access details. If you have been given a non-default SSH port, set that port in the SFTP connection as well.
Fix common transfer problems
“No such file” or a similar missing-path error
Check the spelling, capitalization, filename, and directory on the VPS. Confirm the file exists at the path you supplied; ls ~/*.ovpn checks for matching files in the home directory of the account whose shell you are using. If the file is under another account’s home directory or under /root, use its actual path instead. A relative path can be ambiguous, so use a full path when possible.
Connection fails or times out
Verify the VPS address, SSH username, and SSH port. If the server uses a port other than 22, include uppercase -P before the port number. The port option controls the SSH connection used by scp; it is not part of the remote file path. If the address and port are correct but the connection still fails, confirm that you can reach the server over SSH with the same account and connection details.

Permission denied while reading the profile
The account used for the transfer needs permission to read the remote file. This can happen when an installer creates the profile as root or places it in a directory the normal login cannot access. The safest practical fix is to use an account with appropriate read access, or have an authorized administrator copy the profile to a location readable by your account before downloading it. Avoid changing permissions broadly just to make a transfer work: an .ovpn profile may contain private client key material.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Community discussions describe permission errors when copying OpenVPN files to a local machine, including this Linode Community question. The specific fix depends on the server’s ownership and permissions; do not assume every profile is owned by root.
Authentication fails
Check that you are using the VPS login account and authentication method that work for SSH. The scp command does not bypass the server’s access controls: it must be able to log in and read the specified file. If you can connect but cannot read the profile, resolve the file-access issue rather than repeatedly changing the local destination.
The file is not where expected after transfer
A final dot saves into the local terminal’s current directory, which may not be the folder shown in your desktop’s file manager. Specify an explicit local destination path if you want to avoid ambiguity. Also check that the transfer finished without an error before relying on the local copy.

Security: handle the profile as sensitive material
An .ovpn file may include client key material or other connection credentials. Someone who obtains a usable profile may be able to use the associated VPN connection. Transfer it over SCP or SFTP, keep the local copy somewhere you control, and remove extra copies from shared or public computers. Do not post the file in a support forum or send it through an untrusted channel.

If you need to make a readable copy in another server directory to complete the transfer, use a location and permissions that do not expose it unnecessarily, then remove the temporary copy when it is no longer needed. If the file has been exposed, consult the instructions for the VPN server or profile issuer about replacing or revoking that client profile.
Why scp may use SFTP under the hood
The command remains scp, but OpenSSH 9.0 and later use the SFTP protocol by default for scp transfers. This changes the protocol implementation, not the command shown above. The OpenBSD manual documents scp options and behavior: scp(1) manual page.
If you were looking for instructions phrased as “download opvn file from server to local computer desktop,” note that the filename extension is normally spelled .ovpn. A DigitalOcean Community question uses the misspelling in its title, but the transfer method is the same: download the actual profile file from the VPS to a local folder.
