Netdot turns a Linux server into a central record of network devices, links, IP addresses, MAC addresses, cabling, contacts and exported service configuration. Install the documented Perl, database and Apache stack; define site settings in etc/Site.conf; discover devices with controlled SNMP credentials; verify topology evidence; then schedule rediscovery and data pruning so the documentation follows network changes.

What Netdot documents and how it is built

The Netdot project describes itself as “an open source tool designed to help network administrators collect, organize and maintain network documentation.” Its documented release is version 1.0.8, with manual copyright metadata from 2018. The repository’s latest visible commit is dated January 27, 2021, so treat the installation notes as documentation for that codebase rather than as a guarantee of support on every current Linux distribution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Netdot combines four pieces:

  • A relational database for inventory, addresses, links and physical records.
  • Perl back-end libraries that provide application logic and can also be used as an API.
  • An HTML::Mason web interface served through Apache.
  • Command-line programs designed for cron and other scheduled automation.

MySQL is fully supported in the documented release. PostgreSQL support is described as partial, so MySQL is the safer choice when you want to follow the manual closely.

The resulting documentation can include SNMP-discovered devices; Layer 2 topology; IPv4 and IPv6 address-management blocks; address visualizations; IP/MAC tracking; cable-plant records; contacts; exports; and role-based access control. Netdot can also generate BIND DNS and ISC DHCPD configuration files and export data for Nagios, Sysmon, RANCID, Cacti and SmokePing.

Plan the Linux server before installation

Choose a host and database

Use a server that can reach every management network you intend to poll. SNMP discovery is only as complete as the routing, firewall rules and credentials between the Netdot host and the devices. Reserve a stable DNS name or address for the web application, and decide whether the database will run locally or on a protected database host.

Keep the database on a backed-up volume. Inventory and historical discovery data are operational records; losing the database can remove the relationships and manual enrichments that cannot be reconstructed from a single SNMP scan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare access and security boundaries

  • Permit the Netdot host to reach device SNMP endpoints, normally UDP 161, and allow any return traffic required by your firewall.
  • Permit Apache access only from administrator or operator networks where practical.
  • Use a read-only SNMP credential for initial discovery. Grant write access only if a deliberately chosen integration requires it.
  • Store database, RADIUS, Kerberos or LDAP secrets in protected configuration files and limit their filesystem permissions.
  • Plan an HTTPS reverse proxy or TLS-enabled Apache configuration before exposing the interface beyond a trusted management network.

Install Netdot from the source repository

The project’s source is available at https://github.com/cvicente/Netdot. The following sequence follows the documented workflow; package names and service paths may need adjustment for a modern distribution.

  1. Clone the source and enter the checkout:
    git clone https://github.com/cvicente/Netdot.git
    cd Netdot
  2. On Debian or Ubuntu, install the build tools and packaged prerequisites using the project target:
    make apt-install
  3. On an RPM-based system, install make and use the corresponding target:
    make rpm-install
  4. Check the dependency set:
    make testdeps
  5. If modules are missing, install the project’s dependency list:
    make installdeps
Alternatively, install the individual CPAN modules named by make testdeps through your distribution packages or CPAN policy.
  6. Copy the default configuration to the site-specific file:
    cp etc/Default.conf etc/Site.conf
  7. Edit etc/Site.conf for your hostname, database connection, installation paths, authentication choices, mail or contact settings and any local defaults.

Run make testdeps again after installing modules. A clean dependency check before database initialization prevents confusing web errors that are actually missing Perl libraries.

Ubuntu version caveat

The manual contains special patch instructions for Ubuntu 16.04. Those instructions do not establish support for current Ubuntu releases or for other distributions. If you are deploying on a newer operating system, test the package and Perl dependency set in a disposable VM, record every compatibility change, and keep the original checkout available for rollback.

Configure the database, Apache and first login

Initialize the database

Follow the database creation and installation steps in the Netdot manual for the release you checked out. Create a dedicated database and account rather than using a privileged database login from the web process. Confirm that the account can create and update Netdot’s schema, then remove unnecessary privileges after installation if the documented upgrade process permits it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Configure Apache

The source includes Apache templates for local authentication and for RADIUS, Kerberos or LDAP-backed authentication. Select the template that matches your environment, edit its paths and identity settings, then include or enable the resulting Apache configuration. Reload Apache only after its configuration test succeeds.

Place the application at the path expected by your configuration, commonly /netdot/. If you publish it under another URL prefix, keep the Apache alias, Mason configuration and Netdot site settings consistent; a mismatch usually appears as missing assets or links that point to the wrong path.

Secure the initial account

Open the configured /netdot/ URL. The manual documents an initial username of admin and explicitly instructs administrators to change its password after the first login. Do that immediately, before adding devices or granting additional users access. Verify that the account can create a test record and that a non-administrator account cannot perform administrative edits.

Add the first devices through the web interface

For a small pilot, use Management → Devices. Enter the device hostname or IP address, SNMP community, owner, user, location and contacts, then start discovery. Use a hostname that resolves consistently; if DNS is not reliable in the management network, record the address and correct the name after discovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Management → Devices and choose the add-device action.
  2. Enter a reachable hostname or IP address.
  3. Enter the SNMP community or other credential expected by the device and select the appropriate SNMP settings exposed by your installation.
  4. Set the owner, user, location and contact information. These fields make an automatically discovered record useful to someone responding to an outage.
  5. Run discovery and wait for the device record to populate interfaces, addresses and neighbor evidence.
  6. Review the result manually. Correct names, descriptions, contacts and physical locations before treating the record as authoritative.

Do not assume that a successful SNMP response means the record is complete. Access lists, view restrictions and vendor-specific MIB behavior can hide interfaces, forwarding entries or neighbor data.

Discover one device, a subnet or an inventory file from the CLI

The command-line utility is better for repeatable work. Run commands as the account and installation path used by your Netdot deployment; the examples below use the documented updatedevices.pl program.

Purpose Command Use when
One named device updatedevices.pl -H <device-name> -I -c <community> You are validating credentials or refreshing a single switch or router.
Discover a subnet updatedevices.pl -B 192.168.1.0/24 You want Netdot to process an address range, subject to reachability and SNMP access.
Read a text inventory updatedevices.pl -E <text-file> -I You already maintain a list of devices and want a repeatable import.
Retrieve ARP and forwarding data Use the utility’s ARP and switch-forwarding modes together with the device update options. You need IP-to-MAC and MAC-to-port evidence, not just system identity.
Discover topology updatedevices.pl -T You want links inferred from neighbor, spanning-tree, forwarding or routed-subnet data.
Follow unknown neighbors updatedevices.pl -T --recursive You want topology discovery to continue onto devices found during the run.

Test a single device first. Once the result is correct, expand to a subnet or inventory file. Keep a copy of the input text file under change control so you can explain why a device appeared or disappeared from a later run.

Understand the evidence behind a topology map

Netdot does not derive every link from one universal source. Its topology discovery can use several kinds of evidence, each with different coverage and failure modes.

Evidence What it can show Typical limitation
CDP or LLDP Neighbor identity, local and remote interfaces, and many directly connected links. Disabled protocols, filtered advertisements or devices from another vendor can leave gaps.
Spanning tree Bridge relationships and ports participating in Layer 2 paths. Blocked or alternate paths may not look like active forwarding links.
Switch forwarding tables Which MAC addresses were learned on which switch ports. Entries age out, move during roaming and may be hidden by SNMP view restrictions.
Router point-to-point subnets Routed relationships inferred from address and interface information. Shared segments, tunnels and incomplete addressing can make the relationship ambiguous.

Use multiple sources before declaring a link wrong. A neighbor protocol can identify the endpoints while a forwarding table explains where clients are learned; a routed subnet can confirm a Layer 3 connection when no Layer 2 protocol is present.

Enrich discovered records

After discovery, add the information SNMP cannot reliably provide: building, room, rack, cabinet, contact, jack, module, interface description, service owner, IP details and DNS behavior. Netdot also permits manually fixed neighbors when discovery cannot detect a link. Treat a fixed neighbor as an exception with an owner and review date. The manual warns that fixed relationships can become stale when hardware or cabling changes.

Build IPAM and physical documentation

Use Netdot’s IPv4 and IPv6 IPAM to represent hierarchical blocks, assign addresses and visualize utilization. Start with authoritative network boundaries, then add smaller allocations for sites, VLANs, point-to-point links and special-purpose ranges. Record why an address is reserved rather than leaving unexplained gaps.

IP/MAC tracking becomes more useful when switches regularly provide forwarding tables and routers provide ARP data. Correlate a MAC with its observed switch port and IP address, but label the result as time-sensitive: clients move, ARP entries expire and switch tables age out.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For cable-plant work, record jacks, modules and interface descriptions alongside the logical link. A topology diagram can show that two interfaces connect while the physical record identifies the rack, panel and outlet a technician must inspect.

Keep Netdot current with scheduled jobs

A one-time discovery becomes obsolete as soon as a switch is replaced, a VLAN is renumbered or a link is moved. The project’s sample cron strategy retrieves forwarding and ARP tables, rediscovers devices and topology, prunes old data, exports text documentation and generates configurations for external systems.

The manual gives this example hourly job:

0 * * * * root /usr/local/netdot/bin/updatedevices.pl -DIFAT

Here, the bundled flags represent the project’s combined update operations. Confirm the meaning of each flag against the version installed at your site before copying the schedule. The --matching option can restrict updates to a device-name pattern, which is useful when testing a site or separating polling domains.

Choose an interval based on load

  • Begin with a small device group and measure runtime, database growth and SNMP error rates.
  • Schedule forwarding and ARP collection often enough for your troubleshooting needs, but not so often that tables are constantly polled or rate-limited.
  • Run topology discovery less frequently than lightweight identity checks when the network is large or links change rarely.
  • Stagger jobs so database exports, pruning and external configuration generation do not collide with the heaviest discovery run.
  • Send cron output to a monitored log and alert on repeated authentication failures, timeouts or abnormal runtime.

An hourly schedule is an example, not a universal interval. Polling limits, network size, device CPU, database capacity and the volatility of your environment should determine the final cadence.

Export records and integrate downstream systems

Netdot can export text documentation and generate BIND DNS and ISC DHCPD configuration files. It can also provide data for Nagios, Sysmon, RANCID, Cacti and SmokePing. Treat Netdot as the inventory and address-documentation source, then review generated files before deploying them to production systems.

For each integration, define ownership and failure behavior:

  • Decide whether an export replaces a complete file or updates selected records.
  • Keep the previous generated file so a failed run cannot erase a working configuration.
  • Validate syntax before reloading DNS, DHCP or monitoring services.
  • Log the Netdot database revision, export timestamp and destination system.

Use the REST interface safely

The documented REST interface is exposed under /rest/. The /rest/devinfo endpoint provides extensive device information, while /rest/updatedev supports importing devices. Use these paths for controlled integrations rather than scraping HTML pages.

Authorization is role-sensitive. Administrators can edit or delete generic REST resources; operators and regular users have narrower permissions and purpose-specific editing paths. Create the least-privileged account needed by an automation job, restrict the endpoint at Apache or a reverse proxy, and record which system is allowed to submit device updates.

Troubleshoot incomplete discovery

The device does not appear

  • Test name resolution and basic reachability from the Netdot server.
  • Check firewall rules and SNMP access lists on the device.
  • Verify the community or credential and the SNMP version expected by the device.
  • Run make testdeps if the command fails before contacting the device.
  • Try the one-device command before a subnet scan so the error is isolated.

Interfaces are present but links are missing

  • Confirm CDP or LLDP is enabled where policy allows it.
  • Run the forwarding-table and spanning-tree collection modes.
  • Check that the SNMP view exposes bridge, interface and neighbor MIBs.
  • For routed links, verify that both endpoints have usable point-to-point addressing.
  • Add a fixed neighbor only after documenting why automatic evidence is unavailable, and schedule a review because fixed links can become stale.

IP or MAC data looks old

ARP and forwarding entries are inherently transient. Confirm that the scheduled job is running, inspect its logs, and compare the collection interval with the device’s table-aging behavior. A recently moved endpoint may legitimately appear on its previous port until the next poll or until the device ages the old entry.

The web interface returns server errors

  • Check Apache’s error log and the Perl dependency check.
  • Verify that etc/Site.conf points to the intended database and installation paths.
  • Confirm database connectivity and schema initialization.
  • Check that the Mason application path and Apache alias both use the configured /netdot/ prefix.
  • Review file ownership and permissions after copying configuration files.

Operate Netdot as a living source of truth

Define who owns each class of data. Network automation can refresh system identity, interfaces, addresses and learned paths; facilities or cabling teams may own jacks and cabinet locations; service owners should validate contacts and DNS or DHCP intent. Require a reason and reviewer for manual corrections.

Back up the database and etc/Site.conf, protect exported files, and test restoration on a separate Linux host. Keep the exact Netdot source revision and any local patches with the backup so a recovery does not depend on an undocumented package state.

Review the documentation after major changes: device replacement, VLAN redesign, routing migration, new sites, authentication changes and SNMP policy changes. A scheduled job keeps observations fresh, but it cannot infer an unlabeled cable, an intentionally unused address or the person responsible for a service without human input.

A practical rollout sequence

  1. Install the documented source and dependencies on an isolated Linux server.
  2. Configure MySQL, Apache and etc/Site.conf; verify the initial login and change the administrator password.
  3. Add one switch and one router through Management → Devices.
  4. Validate interfaces, SNMP visibility, ARP data and forwarding tables.
  5. Run updatedevices.pl -T, then use --recursive only after the first topology result is understood.
  6. Correct names, locations, contacts, descriptions and physical relationships.
  7. Define IPAM blocks and test an export to a non-production destination.
  8. Automate a small device group, monitor runtime and errors, then expand gradually.
  9. Document exceptions such as fixed neighbors, restricted SNMP views and manually reserved addresses.

This sequence separates installation risk from discovery risk and makes every later change auditable. It also gives operators a usable baseline before automation begins changing records at scale.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Netdot support PostgreSQL?

The 1.0.8 manual describes MySQL as fully supported and PostgreSQL as partially supported. MySQL therefore follows the documented path more closely.

Is the sample hourly cron entry mandatory?

No. 0 * * * * root /usr/local/netdot/bin/updatedevices.pl -DIFAT is an example. Choose an interval that fits device polling limits, database capacity, network size and how quickly your topology changes.

What should I do when automatic topology discovery misses a link?

Check CDP or LLDP, spanning-tree, forwarding-table and routed-subnet evidence first. If the link still cannot be detected, add a fixed neighbor and assign it a review owner because manual relationships can become stale.
