Use one containerized note app and a separate PostgreSQL database, then choose Azure Container Apps, Linux App Service for Containers, or Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) to run the app. The right sequence is to make the app connect to PostgreSQL locally, publish its image, configure the same database connection for the selected Azure host, and verify that notes persist after the app restarts.

Those three Azure services are a useful comparison, not necessarily the exact three paths from any particular tutorial. The app’s language and framework are not specified, so its Dockerfile, port, startup command, and database configuration must match its actual code.

What the architecture should look like

A browser sends requests to the note web app. The app runs in a container and reads or writes notes in PostgreSQL. In Azure, the app container and database should be treated as separate services: the database holds persistent notes, while the app container can be replaced or restarted without making the notes part of its filesystem.

For a managed database, Azure Database for PostgreSQL Flexible Server is the database option used in Microsoft’s Container Apps and PostgreSQL tutorial and its FastAPI and PostgreSQL App Service tutorial. Those examples establish the app-to-database pattern; they do not define the schema or configuration for an unspecified note app.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • App image: contains the application and its runtime dependencies, not the notes database.
  • PostgreSQL service: stores notes persistently and exposes an endpoint the app can reach.
  • Connection configuration: supplies the app with the database endpoint and valid credentials at runtime. Keep credentials out of the image and source code.

The database must accept connections from the app’s hosting environment. Exact network rules and secret-setting mechanisms depend on the chosen Azure services and the app’s configuration; determine those before deployment rather than copying settings from a sample built for a different stack.

How to Dockerize the note app that uses PostgreSQL

A Dockerfile is specific to the app’s runtime and framework. A Python, .NET, Node.js, or other application may need a different base image, dependency-installation command, startup command, and listening port. Because the app’s stack is unknown, a single concrete Dockerfile would risk producing an image that cannot run it.

  1. Identify the app’s runtime and launch process. Find the supported runtime version, how dependencies are installed, the command that starts the web server, and the port it listens on.
  2. Write the Dockerfile for that stack. Use a suitable runtime image, copy in the application files, install its dependencies, and configure the correct startup command and port. Do not bake database credentials or production connection strings into image layers.
  3. Make database configuration an app runtime setting. Check which environment-variable names or configuration format the app actually reads. A name such as DATABASE_URL is not universal: use it only if the application supports it, or update the app to read the chosen settings.
  4. Build and run the image locally. Confirm that the process starts and listens on the expected port. If the app requires PostgreSQL, provide a reachable database and valid connection settings rather than assuming the container itself supplies one.
  5. Test note persistence. Create a note, restart or replace the app container, and confirm the note remains. This checks that persistence is in PostgreSQL rather than in the app container’s writable filesystem.

Docker Compose can help run an app and a local PostgreSQL service together during development. Microsoft’s AKS preparation tutorial also demonstrates preparing and testing a Compose-based multi-container app locally before publishing and deploying it. Compose is a local development aid here, not a requirement to run PostgreSQL inside AKS or a substitute for configuring the production database.

Once the local image works, publish it to a registry the selected Azure host can access. Microsoft’s container workflow comparison describes local and remote image-building options, including Azure Container Registry (ACR), and distinguishes them from deploying a prebuilt image. See Compare azd container build and deploy options.

How to connect the app to PostgreSQL in Azure

  1. Provision PostgreSQL separately from the app. Choose a PostgreSQL service and create the database and application account the note app needs. The Microsoft Container Apps tutorial uses Azure Database for PostgreSQL Flexible Server.
  2. Set access so the app can reach the database. Configure the database’s connection access for the chosen hosting environment. A correct hostname and password are not sufficient if network rules prevent the connection.
  3. Supply the app’s real connection settings at runtime. Set the endpoint, database name, username, password, and any other values the app requires using that host’s configuration facilities. Use the exact variable names or configuration structure expected by the application.
  4. Verify a complete database operation. Deploy or run the app, create a note, retrieve it, and check persistence after restarting the app. If the connection fails, check the endpoint, credentials, network access, and whether the app is reading the settings you supplied.

Microsoft’s Container Apps example configures app settings for PostgreSQL Flexible Server; its App Service FastAPI example demonstrates the same broad relationship between a web app and that database service. Neither example makes its sample-specific settings universal for another application.

How to deploy the same app image to Azure three ways

The following paths keep the note app and its PostgreSQL role conceptually the same while changing where the app container runs. Provision the database and set the app’s connection configuration for each target; do not assume a local Compose database or settings automatically transfer to Azure.

1. Azure Container Apps: managed container hosting

  1. Build the app image from its Dockerfile or use a prebuilt image, following the build and deployment option appropriate to your workflow.
  2. Provision the Container Apps environment and the PostgreSQL service, then configure database reachability and the app’s connection settings.
  3. Deploy the image to Container Apps and verify that the app starts, can connect to PostgreSQL, and can save and retrieve a note.

Microsoft’s Container Apps tutorial walks through building an app image, creating PostgreSQL resources, configuring access, and deploying a Python sample. Adapt its app-specific commands and settings to the note app rather than treating the sample as framework-neutral. Container Apps is a managed container path, but the database, image, access, and application configuration still need to be set up.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Linux App Service for Containers: a web-hosting model with a custom image

  1. Publish the app image to ACR or another registry supported by the deployment setup.
  2. Provision a Linux App Service web app configured to run the custom container image.
  3. Configure the app’s PostgreSQL connection settings and database access, then verify the deployed app can create and retrieve notes.

Microsoft documents the custom-image workflow in Run a custom container on App Service. Separately, its FastAPI and PostgreSQL tutorial demonstrates an App Service app using Azure Database for PostgreSQL. These sources support the architecture, but they are not one end-to-end tutorial for this unspecified note app.

3. Azure Kubernetes Service: Kubernetes control with cluster configuration to manage

  1. Build and publish the app image to a registry that the AKS deployment can use.
  2. Prepare Kubernetes deployment configuration for the app, including its image, required runtime settings, and how it will be exposed to users.
  3. Configure the app’s connection to PostgreSQL as a separate database architecture task, including reachable networking and runtime credentials.
  4. Deploy the Kubernetes configuration and verify app availability and note persistence.

Microsoft’s AKS preparation tutorial covers preparing and testing an application before publishing its image and deploying it to AKS. Microsoft’s container comparison identifies Kubernetes manifests, Helm, and Kustomize as deployment configuration approaches. AKS does not mean PostgreSQL is automatically provided: the cited app-preparation guide is not a complete managed PostgreSQL setup.

Which Azure option fits the job?

Option Operational responsibility Image and deployment workflow PostgreSQL consideration Good fit when
Azure Container Apps Managed container platform; the app, image, database, and access configuration still need attention. Build from source or a Dockerfile, or deploy a prebuilt image; local and remote build options are documented. Microsoft’s tutorial pairs it with PostgreSQL Flexible Server and configures app connection settings. You want a managed container deployment workflow.
Linux App Service for Containers Integrated web-hosting platform configured to run a custom container. Deploy a custom image from ACR; Microsoft’s azd comparison also describes updating the image reference after infrastructure provisioning. Microsoft documents PostgreSQL with an App Service FastAPI sample separately from its custom-container quickstart. You want a containerized web app in a traditional web-hosting model.
AKS Offers more control, with cluster and Kubernetes configuration to manage. Publish the image and deploy Kubernetes manifests, Helm, or Kustomize configuration. Plan database hosting, network reachability, and credentials separately; the cited AKS preparation tutorial does not provide a complete PostgreSQL setup. You need Kubernetes control and can manage its configuration.

The workflow distinctions in this table are documented in Microsoft’s container build and deploy comparison. The sources cited here do not establish a numerical cost or performance ranking, so choose by operational responsibility and deployment needs rather than an unsupported claim that one option is universally cheaper or faster.

Deployment checks before calling it done

  • The app image starts with the expected runtime command and listens on the port configured for its host.
  • The app receives the database settings it actually expects, without credentials embedded in the image.
  • The PostgreSQL service is reachable from the app’s Azure hosting environment.
  • A new note can be created and retrieved after deployment, and it remains available after the app container is restarted or replaced.
  • The deployment configuration points to the intended image and database environment.
