For a one-off sum, percentage, or conversion, start by simplifying the arithmetic rather than opening a spreadsheet. Break each number into convenient parts, calculate those parts, and combine them. For example, 47 + 32 becomes 47 + 30 + 2 = 79. If the problem has several steps or you need an exact check, use your phone’s built-in calculator; for hands-busy situations, voice input may help.
The quickest route: make the numbers easier first
Mental arithmetic is less about holding a large calculation in your head than about choosing smaller calculations that are easy to verify. The central technique is decomposition: split a number into parts that match the operation, solve each part, and then recombine the results.
The excerpt from Secrets of Mental Math, attributed to Arthur Benjamin and Michael Shermer, uses this pattern for addition. Instead of trying to combine 47 and 32 in one step:

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →47 + 32 = 47 + 30 + 2 = 79
You add the round tens first, then the remaining units. The same idea works for subtraction, multiplication, percentages, and many everyday estimates. You can stop after the mental result, or enter the simplified expression into a calculator for confirmation.

Choose parts that reduce carrying and borrowing
Good parts are usually tens, hundreds, halves, quarters, or numbers that bring another value to a round figure. A decomposition is useful when it leaves you with short, predictable steps—not when it creates more work.
- Round-number split: 63 + 28 becomes 63 + 20 + 8.
- Near-round adjustment: 198 + 37 becomes 200 + 37 − 2.
- Fraction split: 3/4 of 64 can be found as 64 ÷ 4, then multiplied by 3.
- Place-value split: 23 × 6 becomes (20 × 6) + (3 × 6).
Say or write each intermediate result. That keeps the calculation auditable and makes an error easier to locate.
Addition and subtraction in a few manageable steps
Add tens, then units
For two-digit addition, separate the second number into tens and units:
- Start with the first number.
- Add the tens from the second number.
- Add the units.
For 47 + 32, add 30 to reach 77, then add 2 to reach 79. With 56 + 27, calculate 56 + 20 = 76, then 76 + 7 = 83.
With three or more numbers, group convenient combinations. For 18 + 25 + 32, combine 18 + 32 = 50, then add 25 to get 75. The grouping is interchangeable because addition can be rearranged; choose the pairing that makes a round number.
Use compensation when a number is close to a round value
Compensation replaces an awkward number with an easier one and then corrects the difference:
- 198 + 37: treat 198 as 200, calculate 200 + 37 = 237, then subtract 2 to get 235.
- 74 + 29: treat 29 as 30, calculate 74 + 30 = 104, then subtract 1 to get 103.
Apply the correction to the final result, not to an unrelated term. If you round one addend upward, subtract exactly the amount you added.
Subtract by adding the difference or by adjusting
For subtraction, a round-number adjustment often avoids borrowing:

- 64 − 28: subtract 30 to get 34, then add back 2, giving 36.
- 302 − 198: subtract 200 to get 102, then add back 2, giving 104.
For a question such as 83 − 47, you can also count upward from 47: 47 to 50 is 3, 50 to 80 is 30, and 80 to 83 is 3; the total difference is 36. Use whichever route leaves fewer steps.
Check an answer with the inverse operation
Addition and subtraction check each other. After calculating 64 − 28 = 36, add 36 + 28. If the result is 64, the subtraction is consistent. This check is especially useful when you have carried or borrowed mentally.
Multiplication and division without a grid of cells
Distribute multiplication across convenient parts
Break one factor into tens and units, or into factors that are easier to handle:
- 23 × 6: (20 × 6) + (3 × 6) = 120 + 18 = 138.
- 14 × 12: 14 × (10 + 2) = 140 + 28 = 168.
- 32 × 25: 32 × 100 ÷ 4 = 3,200 ÷ 4 = 800.
The final example uses 25 = 100 ÷ 4, which turns the multiplication into a round-number operation followed by division.
Exploit simple factors
Some multipliers have predictable transformations:
- Multiply by 5 by multiplying by 10 and dividing by 2. For 46 × 5, 460 ÷ 2 = 230.
- Multiply by 50 by multiplying by 100 and dividing by 2. For 18 × 50, 1,800 ÷ 2 = 900.
- Multiply by 25 by multiplying by 100 and dividing by 4.
- Divide by 5 by multiplying by 2 and dividing by 10. For 75 ÷ 5, 150 ÷ 10 = 15.
These transformations are identities, not estimates, so the result remains exact when the intermediate division is exact.
Divide in chunks and keep the remainder visible
For division, remove a large, obvious multiple first:
156 ÷ 12 can be viewed as 120 ÷ 12 = 10, with 36 ÷ 12 = 3 left over, for a total of 13.
If the division is not exact, state the remainder or convert it to a decimal only when that format is useful. For example, 157 ÷ 12 is 13 remainder 1, or 13⅟₁₂. A calculator is preferable when a long decimal is required.

Percentages: translate the wording into one operation
Find a percentage of a number
Turn the percentage into a fraction of 100. Ten percent means divide by 10; one percent means divide by 100. Other percentages can be assembled from those building blocks:
- 18% of 225: 10% is 22.5, 5% is 11.25, and 3% is 6.75. Add them: 22.5 + 11.25 + 6.75 = 40.5.
- 15% of 80: 10% is 8 and 5% is 4, so the result is 12.
- 25% of 64: one quarter of 64 is 16.
Apple Support uses “What’s 18 percent of 225?” as an example of a percentage question for Siri. The arithmetic above gives the independently checkable result, 40.5.
Calculate a percentage increase or decrease
Separate the change from the original amount:
- Find the percentage amount.
- Add it for an increase or subtract it for a decrease.
For an 80-unit price increased by 15%, 15% of 80 is 12, so the new value is 92. For a 120-unit quantity reduced by 20%, 20% of 120 is 24, so the result is 96.

Reverse a percentage when the original is unknown
If a final value represents a known percentage of an original, divide by that percentage expressed as a decimal. For example, if 90 is 75% of the original, calculate 90 ÷ 0.75 = 120. This is different from subtracting 25% from 90; the base of the percentage matters.
Fractions, ratios, and everyday proportions
Use familiar fractions
Common fractions often make a mental calculation shorter than decimal conversion:
- 1/2 means divide by 2.
- 1/4 means divide by 4.
- 3/4 means find one quarter, then multiply by 3.
- 1/5 means divide by 5, which can also be done by doubling and dividing by 10.
For 3/4 of 48, 48 ÷ 4 = 12 and 12 × 3 = 36. Keeping the fraction intact avoids rounding.

Scale a ratio with one known part
If four identical items cost 28, one item costs 28 ÷ 4 = 7, and six items cost 7 × 6 = 42. This two-step method is clearer than entering a long expression and makes it obvious whether the units are consistent.

Estimate first, then calculate exactly
An estimate is a guardrail, not a substitute for an exact result when precision matters. Round inputs to values that are easy to combine, predict the approximate range, and then perform the exact calculation.
- For 198 + 37, an estimate of 200 + 40 is about 240; an exact answer of 235 is plausible.
- For 23 × 6, 20 × 6 suggests an answer a little above 120; 138 fits that expectation.
- For 18% of 225, 20% is 45, so a result somewhat below 45 is sensible.
If the exact answer falls far outside the estimate, stop and recalculate. Common causes are a misplaced decimal, a missed sign, or applying a percentage to the wrong base.
Use units as an additional check
Keep the unit attached to the number: dollars, minutes, miles, kilograms, or items. Adding dollars to minutes is a warning that the expression is wrong, even if the arithmetic itself is flawless. For rates, write the numerator and denominator before canceling units.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen the built-in calculator is the better tool
Opening a spreadsheet is unnecessary for a single calculation, but mental arithmetic is not always the most reliable choice. Use the phone’s built-in calculator when the expression has several operations, includes awkward decimals, or must be copied into another task exactly.
Apple’s documentation says the iPhone Calculator can perform basic arithmetic and offers scientific functions, unit conversion, and currency conversion. It also documents copying a result and repeating the last operation. The exact controls and available features can vary by operating-system version and region, so use the options shown on your device.
A practical calculator workflow
- Simplify the question first. Identify the operation and the units. For “18% of 225,” the expression is 225 × 0.18.
- Estimate the range. Expect a result near 45, but below it.
- Enter one complete expression when possible. This reduces the chance of forgetting an intermediate result.
- Read the display before copying. Confirm the decimal point, sign, and unit.
- Copy the result when you need to paste it into a message or form; Apple documents this capability.
- Repeat the last operation for a series of comparable calculations when that function is available on your calculator.
Use scientific mode for functions, not ordinary sums
Scientific mode is useful for powers, roots, trigonometric functions, and other operations beyond a basic calculator. Switch to it only when the problem requires those functions; a simpler mode keeps an everyday calculation easier to inspect. If the expression contains parentheses or several operators, enter them explicitly and check the order of operations.
Use conversion instead of memorized factors when units are unfamiliar
The iPhone Calculator’s documented conversion capability can handle unit or currency conversions. Select the relevant conversion rather than treating a remembered factor as certain. Currency values change, and conversion availability can depend on the device’s software and region; check the displayed source and target units before accepting the result.

The VoiceCalc App Store listing advertises spoken input for percentages and multi-step calculations. Those are vendor-supplied listing claims, not independently tested results, and the app’s availability and pricing can change. Treat the spoken answer as you would any other calculator result: repeat the expression, listen for the units and decimal, and use an independent estimate when the number affects money, safety, or a formal record.
Phrase a voice calculation clearly
- Say “18 percent of 225,” not “18 of 225,” to identify the operation.
- Include “minus” or “divided by” explicitly.
- Say decimal points as “point,” and pause between separate steps.
- Ask for one expression at a time when a result will be copied elsewhere.
Decide among mental math, calculator, and spreadsheet
There is no documented universal winner for speed, accuracy, accessibility, or privacy among these approaches. Choose according to the shape of the task:
- Mental arithmetic: best for a small number of values, quick estimates, and situations where you want to avoid a device.
- Built-in calculator: best for exact one-off results, decimals, conversions, and multi-step expressions that you do not need to save as a table.
- Voice input: best when your hands are occupied and the wording can be stated clearly; verify important results.
- Spreadsheet: best when the work needs a persistent table, repeated formulas, sorting, filtering, or comparison across many values.
A useful boundary is persistence. If you will ask the same formula again with different inputs, need to show the calculation to someone else, or need to change assumptions later, a spreadsheet earns its setup time. If you only need one answer, decomposition or a calculator is usually simpler.
Common mistakes and how to recover
Rounding without correcting
Replacing 198 with 200 is valid only if you subtract the extra 2 later. Write the adjustment beside the rounded number if you are likely to forget it.
Using the wrong percentage base
“15% of 80” and “80 is what percent of 15?” are different questions. Mark the base number before calculating. For a percentage change, the original amount is normally the base.
Dropping a sign or decimal
Read the expression left to right before pressing equals. Estimate the magnitude afterward: a 20% change should not turn 80 into a number near 800.
Ignoring operation order
In a multi-step expression, multiplication and division generally occur before addition and subtraction unless parentheses change the order. Enter parentheses in the calculator, or split the work into labeled intermediate results.

A short practice routine
Practice the decomposition pattern with ordinary numbers rather than memorizing isolated tricks:
- Take five two-digit additions and split each second number into tens and units.
- Take five subtractions and try both round-number adjustment and counting up.
- Rewrite five multiplications using the distributive property.
- Convert five percentage questions into 10%, 5%, 1%, or quarter components.
- Estimate every answer before checking it with a calculator.
The goal is to make the choice of a useful split automatic. The mental-math excerpt that supplies the 47 + 32 example presents breaking a problem into smaller parts as a general principle, not as a trick limited to addition. The edition and publication date of the excerpt are not established on the hosting page, so use it as a technique reference rather than assuming a particular current edition.
Keep the result, not the spreadsheet
For a one-off calculation, decompose the numbers, estimate the likely range, and verify with a built-in or voice calculator when needed. Move to a spreadsheet when the calculation becomes a record, a repeated formula, or a comparison across many values. That boundary preserves the speed of a quick answer without losing the auditability required for larger work.
