You can reduce reliance on South Korean stocks without giving up an AI investment thesis. Start by measuring your portfolio’s actual country, company, and AI value-chain exposures—including holdings inside funds—then choose a diversification route that addresses the concentration you want to reduce. A global or regional label alone does not guarantee less Korean exposure or less dependence on the same semiconductor cycle.
How can I diversify my AI portfolio beyond South Korean stocks?
First decide what “diversify” means for your portfolio. These are related but distinct goals:
- Reduce South Korean country exposure: lower the share of the portfolio tied to Korean-listed or Korean-operating companies.
- Reduce semiconductor and AI-infrastructure exposure: broaden beyond chips, chip equipment, cloud capacity, and the companies funding that infrastructure.
- Broaden across regions and industries: add exposure to companies whose main business drivers differ from AI infrastructure.
- Add different return drivers: consider assets beyond equities only if they fit your circumstances and portfolio plan.
A fund can help with one goal but not another. For example, a global AI fund may own companies in several countries yet remain concentrated in semiconductor and infrastructure spending. Conversely, a broad international fund can reduce dependence on a few AI companies while still owning Korean stocks. Check the holdings rather than inferring exposure from a fund’s name.
How do I measure my portfolio’s reliance on Korean AI stocks?
Make a look-through inventory of direct shares and every fund in the portfolio. For funds, use the latest fact sheet or holdings file and account for the percentage of your money invested in each fund. A holding that appears in several funds can create more exposure than any one fund’s top-holdings list suggests.

- List each position and its portfolio weight. Include direct stocks, ETFs, mutual funds, and other investment vehicles relevant to your account.
- Record country and operating exposure. Note where companies are listed, headquartered, and principally exposed to business activity. Domicile alone may not describe economic exposure.
- Classify each company by AI value-chain role. Distinguish chips and equipment, data centers and cloud infrastructure, software, services, and companies adopting AI in other industries.
- Identify issuer concentration and fund overlap. Add up repeated companies across direct holdings and funds; note whether multiple funds rely on the same small group of AI infrastructure buyers or suppliers.
- Write down the risk drivers. Consider semiconductor cycles, AI spending assumptions, regulation, supply chains, trade, currency, and geopolitical exposure.
Use current documents for the calculation: holdings and country weights change. For a current example of why look-through matters, Global X’s 2026 AIQ fact sheet extract lists South Korea as 7.40% of country exposure, although the extract does not establish the holdings-data date. Which diversification route addresses each concentration?
Broad global or international funds
A broad global or international fund can spread exposure across more companies, industries, and markets than a narrow country or AI theme. It does not automatically remove South Korea, and it may still have meaningful exposure to large technology firms. Review its mandate, country weights, top holdings, and overlap with what you already own.

AI exposure outside semiconductors
AI-related businesses span generative AI, data and infrastructure, software, and services. A fund focused on software or adoption across industries may reduce direct chip exposure, but inspect its actual holdings: a thematic label can encompass infrastructure providers and semiconductor companies as well. BlackRock reported 54% year-over-year earnings growth for AI infrastructure companies versus 14% for the S&P 500 excluding AI infrastructure in a Q2 2026 comparison in its 2026 Fall Investment Directions. Assets with different economic drivers
If the objective is to reduce equity-market or technology-cycle dependence—not merely move equity exposure between countries—an investor may consider whether other asset types belong in the overall plan. Their suitability depends on the investor’s horizon, risk tolerance, tax residence, account type, and existing holdings; the cited fund information does not establish a suitable allocation for an individual.

Changing a portfolio’s country mix does not necessarily change its underlying risks. Semiconductor companies face fast product cycles, obsolescence, supply-chain disruption, regulation, competition, and cross-border trade exposure. In its summary prospectus dated April 1, 2026, Global X Funds says companies involved in AI infrastructure and related products and hardware are vulnerable to those risks. AI adoption and infrastructure spending can also slow. A prospectus filed with the SEC in September 2026 states that a slowdown could reduce demand for semiconductor manufacturing capacity and harm fund holdings. Broadening across countries cannot eliminate that shared spending-cycle exposure if the holdings still depend on AI infrastructure investment. SEC filings
There can be a trade-off between reducing AI-infrastructure exposure and preserving an AI tilt. T. Rowe Price research using data as of July 31, 2026 described the MSCI EAFE Value Index as having almost no direct AI-infrastructure exposure. - Review the top holdings and overlap across the whole portfolio, including direct shares.

- Relate any change to your time horizon, risk tolerance, and the rest of your investments; there is no universally suitable allocation.
