If AI-related stocks have grown into a larger share of your investments after a rally, first check whether your portfolio has drifted from a plan you still want to follow. Rebalancing restores that plan; changing your long-term allocation is a separate decision based on your goals, time horizon, and ability to tolerate risk. Neither move requires predicting whether AI stocks will rise or fall next.
Start by checking what you own—and what your plan says
“AI stocks” is not a settled category in broad market indexes. Companies associated with AI can appear across sectors and funds, so a fund’s name or label alone does not tell you how much AI-related exposure you have. Look through to the underlying holdings and consider how much the same companies appear in multiple funds.
Review your portfolio as a whole, including workplace retirement accounts, IRAs, and taxable accounts where you can. Compare the current mix with your own target allocation, if you have one. The SEC’s Investor.gov explains that asset allocation should reflect personal circumstances: an allocation appropriate for one investor may not suit another.

- Total stock exposure: What share of the portfolio is in equities overall?
- Sector concentration: Are particular industries or themes a much larger part of your holdings than intended?
- Geography: Is the portfolio concentrated in U.S. investments, or does it also include international exposure?
- Largest underlying holdings: Which companies account for the most exposure across all your funds?
- Fund overlap: Do funds with different names hold many of the same largest companies?
The SEC defines diversification as “the practice of spreading money among different investments to reduce risk.” That can mean diversification among asset classes and among investments within an asset class. A broad index fund can still leave a portfolio concentrated if its largest holdings make up a substantial share of the fund, or if several funds own the same companies. A narrowly focused mutual fund or ETF may not add much diversification even if it is a new holding.

Decide whether you need to rebalance or change your allocation
Rebalancing restores an existing target
Market movements can shift a portfolio away from its intended mix. Investor.gov illustrates this with a hypothetical example: a portfolio that starts with 60% in stocks could rise to 80% in stocks after market gains. Those figures are an example, not a recommended allocation.
Rebalancing means bringing holdings back toward an allocation you have already chosen. It is a maintenance decision, not a forecast that the investments you trim will underperform or that the investments you add will outperform. If your plan has a rebalancing rule—such as a review schedule or a tolerance range—use it rather than reacting to headlines.

Changing your allocation revisits the plan itself
If your goals, time horizon, income needs, or comfort with volatility have changed, you may need to review the target allocation rather than simply restore it. Money you expect to need sooner may call for a different level of risk than money intended for a much longer horizon. Your ability to withstand losses matters too. The SEC cautions that there is no allocation that fits every investor.

Compare diversification choices by what they add
There is no universal “AI-proof” asset mix. Consider each possible change in relation to your existing holdings and plan—not as a stand-alone bet against a sector.

For any proposed holding, check its exposure added, overlap with what you already own, potential volatility before you need the money, implementation costs, and the effort required to maintain it. A change that adds a new fund but repeats the same largest holdings may do little to address concentration.

Account for taxes, costs, and ongoing maintenance
Selling appreciated investments may have tax consequences, and trades can involve transaction costs. Investor.gov notes that fees and taxes are relevant to rebalancing decisions. Before selling in a taxable account, consider the likely tax impact alongside how far the portfolio has drifted and the purpose of the trade. The appropriate details depend on your account and circumstances.
Maintenance matters as well. If you prefer not to manage allocation changes yourself, the SEC describes target-date funds as investments whose mix changes over time. Their suitability depends on the investor and on the particular fund; the target year alone does not establish that the fund’s allocation or holdings fit your needs.

Put AI-market forecasts in perspective
In an article published July 29, 2026, Vanguard and Roger Aliaga-Díaz, Vanguard’s global head of portfolio construction, said AI investment had powered earnings while arguing that AI-builder valuations could become a performance headwind. Vanguard discussed possible roles for value and ex-U.S. stocks in scenarios where AI succeeds or disappoints, and said bonds may contribute resilience. These are Vanguard’s forecasts and scenario analysis, not established outcomes or a guarantee about how any asset class will perform.
Those views can help frame questions about valuation and portfolio balance, but they do not determine the right allocation for an individual investor. Nor is diversification a promise of smaller losses in every market environment. The decision remains whether your current exposures and risks still match your plan.
