If Nvidia or Advanced Micro Devices represents a large share of your investments, diversification starts with measuring your total exposure—not with choosing a different ticker. Inventory every account and fund, look through pooled investments for Nvidia or AMD holdings, decide on a stock, bond and cash mix that fits your time horizon and risk tolerance, then spread the equity allocation across companies, industries and potentially regions. Broad mutual funds, index funds and ETFs can help, but only after you inspect what they actually own. There is no universal Nvidia or AMD percentage that every investor should keep.

Why a portfolio concentrated in Nvidia or AMD is riskier

Concentration means that one company, industry or narrow investment theme can have an outsized effect on the value of your portfolio. If Nvidia or AMD falls sharply, company-specific news can affect a large portion of your wealth at once. Diversification is intended to lower overall portfolio risk; it cannot guarantee gains or prevent losses.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) describes diversification in its March 31, 2026, Investor.gov bulletin as “investing in a variety of assets to lower the overall risk of your investment portfolio.” That wording matters: diversification changes the pattern of risk rather than promising a particular return.

There are two separate diversification jobs:

  • Between asset categories: deciding how much belongs in equities, bonds, cash and any other suitable asset categories.
  • Within asset categories: spreading the equity portion across companies, industries, market segments and, where appropriate, geographic markets.

The SEC’s beginner guide says, “A diversified portfolio should be diversified at two levels: between asset categories and within asset categories.” Owning Nvidia and AMD together may look like two positions, but both can expose you to similar semiconductor, technology, supply-chain and economic factors. Replacing one chip company with another stock that responds to many of the same forces may leave the underlying concentration largely intact.

How much of your portfolio should you keep in NVDA or AMD?

No source cited here establishes a universal cap, target or required sale percentage for either stock. The appropriate level depends on your complete financial situation, especially your time horizon and risk tolerance. Risk tolerance includes both your willingness to endure a decline and your financial capacity to withstand one without having to sell at an unfavorable time.

Question Why it affects the decision What to document
When will you need the money? A near-term spending need leaves less time to recover from a large equity loss than a distant goal. The goal, expected withdrawal date and amount that must remain liquid.
How large a decline could you tolerate? A position that is psychologically or financially impossible to hold through volatility is oversized for you, even if its long-term prospects appear attractive. Your reaction to losses and the maximum loss your plan can absorb.
What other resources do you have? Emergency savings, pensions, income and debts change how much investment risk your household can carry. Cash reserves, reliable income, liabilities and other investable assets.
What is the tax and account context? Selling in a taxable account can create a different result from changing exposure inside a retirement or workplace plan. Account type, acquisition records and the tax jurisdiction that applies.

Use those answers to set a target asset allocation before deciding what to do with Nvidia or AMD. A target is a planning choice, not a prediction about either company’s future price or valuation. If the position came from compensation, restricted shares or a large appreciated holding, consider qualified tax and financial advice before making an irreversible transaction.

Step 1: Measure your real Nvidia and AMD exposure

Start with your whole financial picture rather than one brokerage screen. Include taxable accounts, individual retirement accounts, workplace retirement plans, employer-stock programs and other accounts that form part of your investment plan. A broad fund can own Nvidia or AMD even when you did not purchase either stock directly.

  1. List each account and holding. Record the current value of individual shares, mutual funds, index funds, ETFs, bonds and cash. Add employer equity and positions that are subject to vesting or trading restrictions.
  2. Look through every fund. Read the fund’s current holdings, portfolio breakdown and methodology. Note Nvidia and AMD positions, technology or semiconductor allocations, and the percentage represented by the largest holdings.
  3. Calculate exposure as a share of investable assets. Add the value of direct Nvidia shares to Nvidia exposure held through funds, then divide by the value of all investable assets. Repeat for AMD. Do not treat accounts in isolation if the same dollars are part of one goal.
  4. Record the source date. Fund holdings change. Write down the statement date or holdings date so that a later review can distinguish a new concentration from stale information.

For example, suppose a hypothetical investor has $100,000 across accounts: $40,000 of direct Nvidia, $15,000 of direct AMD and $45,000 in a broad fund. If the fund’s holdings show 4% Nvidia and 2% AMD, the investor’s approximate total exposure is $41,800 to Nvidia and $15,900 to AMD before considering any other technology holdings. The arithmetic is illustrative only; the point is to count look-through exposure instead of assuming the fund is independent of the stock positions.

Step 2: Set the asset allocation before selecting replacement investments

Asset allocation is the mix of stocks, bonds, cash and other asset categories in the plan. The SEC identifies time horizon and risk tolerance as central inputs. Goals, liquidity needs and the ability to keep investing during a downturn also belong in the decision.

Match the mix to the goal

  • Near-term spending: identify money that must be available soon and avoid treating it as money that can absorb unlimited equity volatility.
  • Long-term growth: a long horizon may allow more equity exposure, but it does not make a single-company position automatically suitable.
  • Multiple goals: separate the allocation for each goal when one account serves both near-term spending and distant growth.

Separate willingness from capacity

Someone may be comfortable seeing a stock fall but still lack the income, emergency reserves or time needed to recover financially. Conversely, a person with substantial capacity may still lose sleep over volatility and sell at the wrong time. Your allocation should be workable on both dimensions.

Do not infer a current buy or sell view for Nvidia or AMD from a diversification exercise. The question is how much single-company risk your plan can carry, not whether either business is attractive at today’s price.

Step 3: Diversify the equity portion deliberately

Once the stock allocation is known, examine its breadth on several dimensions. A portfolio can contain many securities and still be concentrated in one industry or asset class.

Company breadth

Spread exposure among many companies rather than allowing one or two positions to dominate. When comparing a broad fund with individual shares, inspect the number of holdings and how much the largest positions contribute.

Industry and sector breadth

Technology and semiconductors can be only one part of an equity plan. Consider whether the rest of the portfolio has exposure to industries whose business drivers differ from chip demand, data-center spending and hardware cycles.

Geographic breadth

Depending on your goals and risk tolerance, exposure to companies outside your home market can reduce dependence on one country’s economy, currency and policy environment. Check the fund’s actual regional allocation rather than assuming that a fund labeled “global” has a particular split.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Asset-class breadth

Stocks are not the only possible diversifier. Bonds and cash can serve different roles from equities, including liquidity and reducing reliance on stock-market performance. Their suitability still depends on your horizon, risk tolerance, credit quality and other circumstances.

Approach Potential diversification role Questions to check
Broad-market index fund or ETF Can provide exposure to many companies and industries in one vehicle. How many holdings are there? What percentage is in Nvidia, AMD, technology and the largest positions? What asset classes and regions are included?
Sector or thematic fund Can add targeted exposure but may reinforce a semiconductor or technology concentration. Is the sector already dominant in your direct holdings? Does the fund have a few large positions?
Individual stocks in other industries May broaden company and industry exposure when selected across genuinely different businesses. Do the companies share the same economic drivers? Will the new positions create another narrow cluster?
Bonds or cash Can diversify the asset-class mix and support liquidity needs. Does the maturity, credit quality and access to cash fit the goal and time horizon?

Do index funds or ETFs help diversify a concentrated stock portfolio?

Mutual funds, index funds and ETFs are pooled vehicles that can support diversification and asset allocation. They do not all provide the same breadth. A fund may track one sector, one country, a narrow theme or an index dominated by a handful of companies.

Before using a fund to reduce concentration, review:

  • the complete or representative holdings list and its date;
  • the percentage in Nvidia, AMD and other large technology positions;
  • the number of holdings and how evenly assets are distributed;
  • sector, industry and geographic weights;
  • whether the vehicle owns stocks, bonds, cash or a combination;
  • the fund’s stated objective, index methodology and costs; and
  • how its holdings overlap with every account you already own.

“Index fund” describes how a fund seeks to track an index, not how diversified that index must be. A broad index can still have meaningful exposure to its largest companies, while a specialized index can be intentionally narrow. Use the actual holdings and concentration data to make the decision.

Compare possible changes using the same decision framework

When evaluating a sale, a new fund or additional securities, compare each option against the concentration you are trying to solve.

Comparison axis What to ask
Exposure breadth How many companies, industries, regions and asset classes will the option add?
Overlap Does it already own Nvidia, AMD or the same companies you hold elsewhere?
Concentration What share is held by the largest company, sector and asset class?
Goal fit Does the expected volatility and liquidity match the time horizon and purpose of the money?
Costs What ongoing fund expenses, trading charges or bid-ask costs apply? Current fee figures must be checked in the relevant prospectus or account.
Taxes Could selling or exchanging create a taxable event in your jurisdiction? Obtain individualized tax guidance rather than assuming a result.

A move from Nvidia to AMD, or from AMD to another semiconductor company, may change the company name without changing the dominant industry exposure. Treat that as a substitution, not automatically as diversification.

Choose an implementation path

Use new money first

If you are still contributing, direct new contributions toward the asset categories, sectors or regions that are missing. This can gradually change the portfolio without requiring an immediate sale, although it may not reduce an existing concentration quickly enough for a near-term goal.

Sell and reinvest deliberately

A sale can reduce concentration immediately, but the transaction should be connected to the allocation you selected. Decide in advance where proceeds will go, what liquidity must remain available and how the change affects every account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stage changes only for a reason

Some investors prefer a staged process to make the transition manageable; others prioritize completing the target allocation promptly. Neither approach is universally correct. A staged plan can leave concentration in place longer, while an immediate change can realize gains and expose the investor to timing risk.

Get advice for complex holdings

Large taxable gains, employer stock, restricted shares and compensation-related positions can involve rules that vary by person and jurisdiction. A qualified tax professional or financial adviser can evaluate staged sales, charitable-giving approaches or other techniques where they are legally available and individually appropriate. Those strategies are not automatic recommendations.

Build a rebalancing plan

After changing the portfolio, write down how you will keep it aligned. A practical plan states:

  • the target mix for stocks, bonds, cash and any other chosen categories;
  • the maximum concentration you are willing to tolerate for one company, sector or asset class;
  • which account will receive new contributions;
  • what event will trigger a review, such as a scheduled date or material drift from the target; and
  • how taxes, trading costs and liquidity will be checked before a transaction.

Rebalancing is the act of bringing an allocation back toward its chosen targets; it is not a prediction about which investment will perform best next. Review fund holdings as well as direct shares, because a change in an index or fund portfolio can alter your look-through exposure without a trade in your account.

Common mistakes when reducing Nvidia or AMD concentration

  • Counting only the brokerage account in front of you: workplace plans and funds in other accounts can materially change total exposure.
  • Assuming two tickers equal diversification: Nvidia and AMD can share industry and economic drivers, so company count alone is an incomplete measure.
  • Buying a fashionable narrow fund: a sector or thematic vehicle may add to the same risk you intended to reduce.
  • Ignoring the stock-and-bond mix: spreading among equities does not address concentration in the equity asset class itself.
  • Using stale holdings data: fund composition changes, so record the date of every look-through calculation.
  • Selling without checking taxes and costs: the net outcome depends on account type, acquisition history, jurisdiction and transaction terms.
  • Making the change without a written target: an unplanned sale can simply move the concentration to another company or leave proceeds uninvested.
  • Treating diversification as protection from every loss: diversified portfolios can still decline when markets or several related assets fall together.

A repeatable checklist

  1. Gather statements for every account and identify the assets that fund each goal.
  2. Calculate direct and fund-based Nvidia and AMD exposure as percentages of total investable assets.
  3. Map concentration by company, sector, geography and asset class.
  4. Describe each goal’s time horizon, liquidity requirement and acceptable loss.
  5. Choose a stock, bond and cash allocation that fits those constraints.
  6. Compare broad and narrow investment options using holdings, overlap, concentration, costs and tax consequences.
  7. Select an implementation path and decide where proceeds or new contributions will go.
  8. Document a rebalancing trigger and repeat the look-through review when holdings or circumstances change.

What this framework does—and does not—tell you

This process can reveal how much single-company and semiconductor exposure you actually carry and help you design a more balanced plan. It does not establish a current price target, valuation, business outlook or recommended allocation for Nvidia or AMD. It also cannot determine your tax bill or replace advice based on your income, residence, account rules and personal objectives. Those decisions require current issuer, fund and market information plus facts specific to you.
