The reliable way to diversify an AI- and technology-heavy portfolio is to measure your real exposure first, set a stock/bond/cash mix that fits your goal and risk capacity, then spread the equity portion across genuinely different sectors, company sizes, investment styles and regions. Add a written rebalancing rule, and account for taxes, fees and fund overlap before you trade. Diversification can reduce concentration risk, but it cannot guarantee a profit or prevent losses.
This is a process rather than a model portfolio. Your appropriate allocation depends on your time horizon, financial needs and ability to tolerate a decline.
What diversification means when AI and technology dominate your holdings
Diversification works on two levels. Across asset categories, you combine investments such as equities, high-quality fixed income and cash. Within equities, you spread exposure across sectors, company sizes, investment styles and countries. A portfolio can own dozens of securities and still be concentrated if most of them depend on the same technology cycle, customers, financing conditions or a few large companies.

It also warns that a mutual fund or exchange-traded fund (ETF) is not automatically diversified: a narrowly focused fund can concentrate in one industry, and several funds can hold the same largest companies. Counting funds is therefore a poor test. Inspecting their top holdings and underlying exposures is more informative. Step 1: Map your actual AI and technology exposure
Before deciding what to buy or sell, create one consolidated inventory. Include taxable brokerage accounts, IRAs or other retirement plans, employer stock, restricted stock or options, and funds held in workplace plans. Record each holding’s market value and its percentage of the total portfolio.
Separate direct, fund and indirect exposure
- Direct exposure: individual technology, semiconductor, cloud, software, platform or other companies whose results are closely tied to AI spending or technology demand.
- Fund exposure: broad-market funds, sector funds, thematic funds and target-date funds. Read each fund’s current top holdings, sector weights and stated mandate.
- Indirect exposure: companies in other industries that are major technology customers, suppliers or users; employer stock; and compensation that rises or falls with the same economic cycle as your investments.
Classify a holding by the economic driver that matters, not only by its legal sector label. A company can be classified outside technology while still relying heavily on cloud infrastructure, advertising platforms, chips or automation. Conversely, a diversified fund may own technology companies but spread its business exposure across health care, consumer goods, industrials and other sectors.
Look through every fund
Download each fund’s latest holdings and compare the largest positions across funds. Two apparently different ETFs may own many of the same companies, so adding the second fund can increase fees without adding a distinct source of return. Check expense ratios, trading spreads and any account-level charges alongside the overlap analysis.

A simple worksheet can have these columns: holding or fund, account, market value, percentage of total assets, primary sector, geographic domicile, growth or value orientation, company-size category, and the names of overlapping top holdings. Add a separate line for employer stock and unvested compensation if losing that income would affect your ability to spend or save. The objective is not a perfect scientific classification; it is a clear picture of how much of your wealth depends on the same theme.
Step 2: Set your risk budget before choosing replacements
Allocation should follow the purpose of the money. Identify the goal, the date you expect to need the funds, how flexible that date is, and how much loss you could financially and emotionally withstand. The SEC notes that stocks can be volatile over short periods, while bonds are generally less volatile and offer more modest expected returns; some bond categories still carry meaningful credit and interest-rate risk.

Match risk to the time horizon
- Near-term spending: money needed soon has less capacity to absorb a large equity drawdown. Cash and high-quality short-term fixed income may play a larger role, depending on your circumstances.
- Long-term growth: a long horizon can allow more equity risk, but it does not make a technology concentration safe. A company, sector or theme can remain out of favor for years.
- Irreplaceable goals: retirement income, tuition or a home purchase may require a different risk budget from money intended for a distant bequest.
Separate willingness to take risk from ability to take risk. A high income or large emergency reserve may improve your financial capacity, while a near-term liability, unstable employment or dependence on employer shares may reduce it. There is no universally correct stock, bond or cash percentage for an unknown investor.
Step 3: Add exposures that are genuinely different
Use more than one asset class
Reducing a technology concentration usually requires more than swapping one technology fund for another. Consider whether a suitable portion of the portfolio belongs in high-quality fixed income or cash. Bonds introduce interest-rate, credit and inflation risks, so “bonds” are not a single risk category. Evaluate maturity, issuer quality, duration and whether the holding is government, investment-grade corporate or lower quality.
Cash can provide liquidity for near-term needs and reduce the chance that you must sell volatile assets at an inconvenient time. It also has reinvestment and inflation risks. Treat the cash reserve as part of the overall allocation rather than as an afterthought.
Broaden equity sectors and business drivers
Technology and AI companies often share sensitivity to corporate capital spending, valuation multiples, chip supply, electricity and data-center costs, regulation and the availability of financing. Other sectors can have different revenue sources and operating pressures. The SEC gives consumer goods, health care and technology as examples of industry sectors; the point is to combine businesses whose earnings are not all driven by the same factor.
Sector diversification is not a guarantee of low correlation. During a broad market shock, many sectors can decline together. It is a way to avoid making one industry or theme responsible for the entire equity outcome.

Balance growth and value characteristics
Many AI-related holdings have growth characteristics: investors pay for expected future expansion, so prices can be sensitive to interest rates and changes in forecasts. Value-oriented companies can have different valuation and cash-flow profiles. Vanguard’s December 10, 2025 outlook identified U.S. value-oriented equities among its strongest projected risk-return profiles for the following five to ten years, but that is a forecast, not a promise or a personal recommendation. Read the methodology and assumptions before using any outlook to change your allocation.

Vary company size
Large technology companies can have stronger balance sheets and broader access to capital, but they can also dominate multiple funds at once. Smaller companies may provide different sources of growth and risk, including thinner trading liquidity, less diversified revenue and greater sensitivity to financing conditions. Check whether a proposed small-company allocation actually adds distinct holdings rather than another portfolio of the same mega-cap names.
Consider geography and currency
U.S. and non-U.S. companies face different currencies, regulations, labor markets, tax systems and economic cycles. Developed markets outside the United States can broaden exposure to businesses adopting AI without requiring every holding to be a U.S. technology builder. Currency movements can raise or lower returns for a home-currency investor, and country risks can increase volatility. Decide how much international exposure fits your ability to tolerate those differences rather than treating geography as a free hedge.
Check liquidity and total cost
For each new exposure, ask whether you can trade it at a reasonable spread, whether the fund has a clear mandate, and what expenses you will pay. A larger number of funds can create duplicate positions, additional expense ratios and more complicated tax lots without improving diversification. Distinct exposure is more important than a long list of ticker symbols.
A practical sequence for rebuilding the portfolio
- List everything. Export current positions from each account, add employer equity and include cash balances.
- Aggregate duplicates. Combine the same company held directly and through funds. Review the largest positions in every fund for less obvious overlap.
- Label the drivers. Mark sector, country, company size, growth or value orientation, and major dependence on AI or technology spending.
- Define the risk budget. Write down the goal, time horizon, acceptable drawdown and the amount that must remain liquid before selecting replacement exposures.
- Choose missing dimensions. Decide whether the gap is asset-class diversification, non-technology sectors, value exposure, smaller companies, non-U.S. developed markets or a combination.
- Compare candidate holdings. Read the prospectus or fund facts, top holdings, sector and geographic weights, expenses, trading liquidity and tax characteristics.
- Plan the transition. In taxable accounts, estimate realized gains, holding periods and applicable tax rates before selling. Consider whether staged sales or directing new money elsewhere can meet the target with less immediate tax cost.
- Document the policy. Record target ranges, a review schedule, a rebalancing trigger and which accounts will receive new contributions first.
How to rebalance without turning the process into a market call
Rebalancing restores the risk mix after market movements push an asset or sector above its intended range. It is not a prediction that AI will rise or fall next. The SEC describes calendar-based reviews, such as every six or twelve months, and threshold-based reviews that act when an allocation moves beyond a chosen band. It says rebalancing generally works best relatively infrequently.

Three workable methods
- Sell overweight holdings and buy underweights: direct, but potentially creates taxable gains and transaction costs.
- Direct new contributions: send fresh savings to underweight assets. This can reduce the need to sell immediately, although account rules, tax treatment and the size of the imbalance still matter.
- Use a combination: apply contributions first, then sell only enough of an overweight position to bring the portfolio back within its permitted range.
Choose the calendar or threshold in advance and write it down. Checking prices every day can encourage discretionary trading and make the diversification plan dependent on short-term forecasts. Revisit the policy when your goal, income, tax situation or risk capacity changes, not merely because a headline changes.
What current AI outlooks can—and cannot—tell you
Vanguard’s July 29, 2026 discussion offers a conditional way to think about beneficiaries. Roger Aliaga-Díaz, Vanguard’s global head of portfolio construction, said: “Longer term, and assuming that it succeeds in transforming the economy, we expect AI to provide the greatest benefit to companies using the technology, not its builders.” The same discussion says value and ex-U.S. companies may be more resilient if AI falls short, and that bonds may provide resilience. Those are Vanguard’s views under stated assumptions, not established outcomes. Read the full article at Vanguard’s AI portfolio discussion.
Vanguard’s December 10, 2025 outlook listed high-quality U.S. fixed income, U.S. value-oriented equities and non-U.S. developed-markets equities as its strongest projected risk-return profiles across public investments over the coming five to ten years. Its 2026 VEMO example used an allocation of 40% stocks and 60% bonds. That example is not a universal recommendation, and the outlook’s projections are not guarantees.
Vanguard’s related AI exuberance report contains portfolio simulations dated October 31, 2025. Modeled allocations and projected returns are hypothetical; they are not observed results for investors and should not be treated as a timing signal.

Tax, account and implementation issues
The same allocation can have different consequences in a taxable brokerage account, a tax-deferred retirement account and a tax-free account. Selling an appreciated position may create a capital gain; selling at a loss can interact with loss-deduction and repurchase rules that vary by jurisdiction. Fund distributions, employer-stock rules and account-specific restrictions can also affect the order of trades. The SEC specifically advises considering taxes and transaction costs when rebalancing.

Protect the diversification plan from AI-themed fraud
AI branding is not evidence of a legitimate investment. The SEC, NASAA and FINRA warn about fraudulent trading systems and promotions that claim an AI strategy “can’t lose.” Treat guaranteed returns, urgent pressure to deposit money, unverifiable performance screenshots and vague explanations of registration as warning signs.
Before sending money, investigate the promoter and the investment professional’s registration through the relevant regulator, read the offering documents, and verify where assets will be held. An automated tool or “AI bot” does not remove market risk, custody risk or fraud risk. The joint SEC, NASAA and FINRA investor alert on AI investment fraud explains the warning signs.

Portfolio-diversification checklist
- Have you combined holdings across every account, including employer stock and retirement plans?
- Do you know the percentage tied directly or indirectly to AI and technology businesses?
- Have you compared the top holdings of every mutual fund and ETF?
- Does each proposed addition supply a distinct asset class, sector, style, size or geography?
- Does the stock/bond/cash mix fit the goal, time horizon and ability to absorb losses?
- Have you checked expenses, bid-ask spreads, liquidity and tax consequences?
- Is there a written calendar or threshold rule for rebalancing?
- Will new contributions be directed to underweights before you sell appreciated assets?
- Have you rejected guarantees and verified registration for any AI-branded investment service?
Diversification is most useful when it is deliberate: measure the concentration, choose exposures with different economic drivers, and maintain the plan through a pre-set process. It manages exposure; it does not ensure a profit or protect against a loss.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to sell every AI or technology stock to diversify?
No. The objective is to bring concentration within a risk level you can support. You can combine retained technology exposure with different sectors, styles, company sizes, regions, fixed income and cash, using new contributions or gradual sales where appropriate.
Can several broad-market funds still leave me concentrated?
Yes. Funds can share the same largest holdings, and a narrowly focused fund may be concentrated in one industry. Compare each fund’s top holdings and sector weights instead of relying on the number of funds.
Is Vanguard’s 40% stocks and 60% bonds example right for everyone?
No. It is the VEMO allocation described in Vanguard’s 2026 outlook, not a personal recommendation. Your goal, time horizon, tax position and ability to tolerate losses determine an appropriate mix.
How often should I rebalance?
There is no universally best interval. The SEC describes calendar reviews, such as every six or twelve months, and threshold reviews. Pick a rule in advance, apply it relatively infrequently, and account for taxes and transaction costs.
