Reduce AI concentration by measuring your look-through exposure first, then choosing an asset mix that matches your time horizon and risk tolerance. Spread risk across asset classes, industries, company sizes and regions; use new contributions or selective sales to move toward that mix; and review the portfolio periodically. There is no evidence-based universal percentage for AI stocks, bonds, cash or international holdings, and diversification cannot prevent losses.

This is general U.S.-oriented education, not individualized investment or tax advice.

What “AI concentration” really means

A portfolio can look diversified because it has many line items while still depending on the same companies and technology cycle. You may own an AI-chip company directly, then own it again through a technology exchange-traded fund, a broad market fund and an employer retirement plan. Each account appears separate, but the economic exposure is correlated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FINRA identifies correlated assets, intentional concentration, performance-driven drift, employer-stock concentration and illiquid holdings as possible sources of concentration risk. The relevant question is not whether your portfolio crosses a particular percentage. The official sources reviewed do not establish a single threshold at which an AI-heavy portfolio becomes dangerously concentrated. Ask instead whether the exposure is consistent with the loss you could tolerate and the goals the money must fund.

Direct and indirect exposure

  • Direct exposure: individual shares of companies whose revenues, valuations or investor narratives are closely tied to artificial intelligence, data-center infrastructure, chips, cloud computing or related software.
  • Indirect exposure: shares held inside sector funds, thematic funds, broad index funds, target-date funds and other pooled investments.
  • Economic exposure: businesses in different industries that may still move together because they depend on technology spending, interest rates, the same suppliers or the same large customers.

A fund does not become diversified merely because it has a fund label. Its current holdings, weighting method and mandate determine what you actually own.

Step 1: Map your portfolio on a look-through basis

Build one inventory across taxable accounts, retirement plans, employee-share programs and cash accounts. Record each security, its market value and the account in which it sits. For every fund, inspect the most recent holdings file, top positions, stated objective and benchmark. Holdings, fees and weights change, so use current documents rather than an old fact sheet.

A practical exposure worksheet

  1. List every account and position. Include individual shares, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, target-date or lifecycle funds, money-market funds and employer stock.
  2. Open each fund’s holdings. Capture its largest positions, sector weights, geographic mix, company-size mix and any stated thematic or industry limits.
  3. Match issuers. Add the value of a company held directly to the value of that same issuer held through each fund. Use the fund’s current percentage and your dollar amount to estimate the indirect position.
  4. Group related exposures. Create categories such as technology hardware, software, communications, financials, health care, industrials, consumer businesses, utilities and real estate. Note infrastructure or suppliers that may be tied to the same technology-investment cycle.
  5. Mark concentration sources. Flag a single employer, a sector or thematic fund, a position that has grown after a strong run, correlated holdings and assets that would be difficult to sell.
  6. Compare the result with your intended risk. Write down whether the current mix was deliberate or simply accumulated through price gains, automatic contributions or overlapping fund purchases.

This exercise does not require perfect classification of every company. Its purpose is to reveal repeated exposure that account statements conceal. If a fund does not publish enough detail to estimate its contents, record the uncertainty rather than treating the fund as diversified.

Why top holdings matter

Market-cap-weighted indexes assign larger weights to companies with larger market values. A broad index can therefore have substantial exposure to the same large technology issuers you already own. The fund may hold hundreds or thousands of securities, but the largest positions can dominate its return. Check the index rules and the current top holdings before assuming that adding the fund reduces AI concentration.

Step 2: Set a destination before changing investments

Asset allocation is the decision about how much of the portfolio belongs in broad categories such as stocks, bonds and cash. Investor.gov states: “The asset allocation decision is a personal one.” The page points to investment time horizon and risk tolerance as key considerations.

Time horizon

Money needed soon has less time to recover from a severe decline than money intended for a distant goal. Separate near-term spending reserves from long-term investments before deciding how much volatility you can accept. A long horizon can allow more exposure to volatile assets, but it does not make a concentrated AI position safe.

Risk tolerance and capacity

Risk tolerance is your willingness to endure losses; risk capacity is the financial ability to do so without abandoning an essential goal. Consider income stability, emergency savings, debt, planned withdrawals and whether a large decline would force you to sell. A questionnaire can help organize the discussion, but it cannot determine a universally correct allocation.

Write an allocation policy

Document the categories you intend to hold, the reason for each, how contributions will be directed and what circumstances would trigger a review. Do not copy a generic “balanced” percentage or treat a hypothetical example as a recommendation. The SEC’s Investor.gov page illustrates a portfolio moving from 60% stocks to 80% after stocks rise; it is an explanation of drift, not a suggested 60/40 allocation.

Ways to diversify an AI-heavy portfolio

Diversification works at more than one level. Investor.gov recommends considering diversification both between asset categories and within each category.

Across asset classes

Category General role described in official guidance Important limits
Stocks Potentially higher growth and higher volatility Individual companies, sectors and regions can suffer large losses; stock returns are not guaranteed.
Bonds Generally less volatile than stocks, with more modest expected returns Credit, interest-rate, inflation and liquidity risks vary by issuer and bond type.
Cash equivalents Generally lower risk and lower return Purchasing power can be eroded by inflation, and yields can change.
Mixed-allocation funds Combine categories and may maintain a stated allocation Underlying holdings, glide path, fees and rebalancing rules still require review.

These are broad descriptions, not promises that one category will offset a technology decline. Bonds can fall, cash can lose purchasing power and stocks can decline together during market stress.

Within equities

  • Industry breadth: Add exposure to sectors whose business drivers differ from AI infrastructure and software. A narrow sector fund may remain concentrated even if it holds many securities.
  • Company sizes: Large-, mid- and small-company funds have different compositions and risks. A small-company fund is not automatically safer, but it can avoid repeating the same mega-cap holdings.
  • Geography: International stock funds can broaden exposure beyond U.S. companies. Currency, political, regulatory and market-structure risks differ by country, and international diversification does not guarantee a gain when U.S. technology falls.
  • Investment styles: Value, growth, dividend and other strategies use different rules, but the actual holdings matter more than the label. A “value” strategy can still own technology companies.

Managed allocation

A lifecycle or target-date fund delegates allocation and rebalancing. That convenience does not remove the need to check the underlying funds, glide path, current stock concentration and total fees. Two funds with similar target dates can have materially different allocations and costs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cash-flow diversification

If you are adding money, direct new contributions toward categories that are below your written allocation rather than automatically buying the same AI-heavy positions. This can reduce concentration without immediately selling every overweight holding. It also lets you spread changes over time, although it does not eliminate the risk of a continued decline in the concentrated position.

How to evaluate a fund as a diversification tool

Use the following checklist for every candidate index fund, actively managed fund or exchange-traded fund.

Comparison axis Questions to answer
Concentration and overlap What are the top holdings and sector weights? Which issuers overlap with your direct shares and other funds?
Breadth How many holdings are there, and do they cover different industries, company sizes and regions?
Asset class Is it an equity, fixed-income, cash-equivalent or mixed-allocation product? What risks apply to that category?
Index or strategy rules What benchmark or selection process does it follow? Are weights market-cap based, equal weighted, capped or otherwise constrained?
Cost What is the expense ratio, and are there transaction costs or an additional fee layer in a fund of funds?
Tracking and trading For an index product, how closely has it followed its benchmark? For an ETF, how can its market price differ from net asset value?
Personal fit Does it suit your goal, time horizon, risk tolerance, liquidity needs and account context?

Index funds are tools, not automatic solutions

Index funds track an index indirectly. Sampling, fees, rebalancing, corporate actions and index construction can create tracking differences. A market-cap-weighted index can place a large share in the biggest companies. Read the prospectus and holdings instead of inferring diversification from the word “index.”

ETF-specific checks

An ETF trades at a market price that can be above or below its net asset value. Review the bid-ask spread, liquidity, structure, objective and risks in its prospectus. An ETF label alone does not establish broad diversification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 3: Choose how to reduce the concentration

Redirect future contributions

Change automatic purchases, workplace-plan elections or dividend reinvestment instructions so new money goes to underweight categories. This approach may be useful when selling is costly, operationally inconvenient or inconsistent with your account rules. It will not quickly correct a very large existing position.

Sell part of an overweight position

A partial sale can move the portfolio toward its intended mix while preserving some exposure. Decide the destination for the proceeds before placing the trade. In taxable accounts, the result depends on your jurisdiction, account type, cost basis, holding history and current law; those facts are not established here. A qualified tax professional can address your personal treatment.

Use a combination

Many investors can redirect contributions and make staged sales according to a written policy. Staging is a process choice, not a guarantee of a better price. Avoid turning diversification into a market-timing attempt based on a prediction about the next AI cycle.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Step 4: Rebalance deliberately

Rebalancing restores a chosen allocation after price movements or contributions cause drift. Investor.gov describes selling overweight investments and buying underweight categories, or directing new purchases toward the underweight categories. Some investors use calendar intervals; others use allocation thresholds. The official guidance says rebalancing tends to work best relatively infrequently, so treat those methods as options rather than a universal schedule.

  1. Review the written target and current look-through weights.
  2. Identify which categories are overweight and which are underweight.
  3. Check account restrictions, trading costs, liquidity and possible tax consequences before selling.
  4. Apply the least disruptive method that moves the portfolio toward the target: new contributions, redirected purchases, exchanges where permitted or sales.
  5. Update your inventory after trades settle and record the reason for the change.

Rebalancing is not a forecast that the sold asset will fall or the purchased asset will rise. It is a way to keep risk aligned with a prior decision.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Counting funds instead of underlying issuers

Symptom: You own several funds and assume each adds a new source of return.
Correction: Compare their top holdings, sector weights and benchmarks; aggregate repeated issuers.

Buying a broad fund without checking its weightings

Symptom: A broad market fund is added, but the largest technology companies already dominate the portfolio.
Correction: Inspect the index method and current holdings. A broad fund can reduce single-company risk while leaving substantial technology exposure.

Replacing one narrow theme with another

Symptom: An AI fund is sold and a different narrowly focused technology, robotics or innovation fund is purchased.
Correction: Evaluate the new fund’s economic drivers, not its marketing name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming bonds are interchangeable

Symptom: A bond allocation is treated as a guaranteed counterweight to stocks.
Correction: Review maturity, duration, credit quality, issuer, inflation sensitivity and liquidity. Bond risks vary substantially.

Ignoring employer stock

Symptom: Salary, future employment income and retirement assets all depend on one company, but only brokerage holdings are counted.
Correction: Include employer shares and consider the wider financial dependence when assessing risk.

Making an allocation decision from a recent winner

Symptom: A position that rose sharply becomes a much larger portfolio share, and the new weight is treated as intentional.
Correction: Compare current weights with the written policy and rebalance based on that policy rather than a return prediction.

A repeatable review routine

Use a consistent routine instead of reacting to headlines about artificial intelligence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • At each planned review: refresh fund holdings, top positions, fees and benchmark information.
  • After major account changes: include new employers, rollovers, inherited assets, large withdrawals and new automatic contributions.
  • When a position grows: determine whether the change came from price appreciation, purchases or a corporate action.
  • Before trading: confirm the destination allocation, liquidity needs, account rules and tax questions.
  • After trading: verify execution, settlement, resulting weights and any changed recurring instructions.

Keep records of the policy and review date. A documented process makes it easier to distinguish a deliberate adjustment from a reaction to a market story.

When professional help is appropriate

Consider an independent, appropriately licensed financial professional when the portfolio includes concentrated employer shares, complex compensation, restricted stock, multiple jurisdictions, large unrealized gains, trust or estate issues, or a withdrawal deadline that makes losses especially consequential. Ask how the professional is paid, what services are included and whether recommendations account for all accounts and liabilities. A tax professional is the appropriate source for individualized tax treatment; the general information here cannot determine whether selling is advantageous in your circumstances.

Optional background reading

Wiley lists the second edition of The Bogleheads’ Guide to Investing as a 336-page paperback published in February 2022 and describes it as covering portfolio diversification. It is general investing education, not an AI-specific manual or an official recommendation. Check current availability and edition details before purchasing.

What diversification can and cannot do

Diversification seeks to reduce dependence on a limited number of companies, industries or asset classes. It cannot eliminate market risk, guarantee gains, ensure that a bond or international fund rises when AI stocks fall, or identify the perfect allocation in advance. The useful outcome is a portfolio whose exposures are visible, intentional and consistent with the money’s purpose.
