If Chinese technology stocks dominate your portfolio, diversification starts with measuring your real exposure—not simply buying another fund. Inventory direct shares, American depositary receipts (ADRs), and every fund you own; look through each fund to its underlying companies; then reduce concentration across companies, sectors, regions, and asset classes in a way that fits your goals, risk tolerance, time horizon, tax position, and account type.
There is no evidence-based universal percentage for Chinese technology exposure, and adding a non-China fund does not automatically remove risk if it owns the same companies or leaves your technology weighting high. The practical objective is to identify which risks you want to reduce, choose broader exposures that actually address them, and implement changes without relying on a short-term market-timing call.
What concentration you need to reduce
“Chinese technology stocks” can describe several different exposures. A portfolio may hold shares listed in mainland China or Hong Kong, U.S.-listed ADRs, companies incorporated elsewhere but dependent on Chinese revenue, and funds whose names conceal substantial holdings in the same issuers. Treating all of these as separate bets can understate your concentration.

Look through funds and ETFs
For each mutual fund or exchange-traded fund (ETF), read the current holdings, investment objective, geographic mandate, sector breakdown, and expenses. A broad international fund can contain Chinese technology companies, while a China or emerging-markets technology fund can repeat the same issuers you already own. The SEC’s asset-allocation guidance stresses that owning several funds does not guarantee diversification when their investments overlap.
Build a look-through worksheet. If a fund is 8% of your portfolio and 20% of that fund is invested in one Chinese technology company, that company contributes 1.6 percentage points to your total portfolio before counting any direct shares or other funds. Apply the same calculation to sectors and countries. Mark the largest repeated positions first; they usually explain more of the risk than the number of account line items.
Separate security, sector, country, and currency exposure
Concentration has layers:
- Security concentration: too much value in one issuer or a small group of issuers.
- Sector concentration: a large technology allocation even when the companies are from different countries.
- Country concentration: dependence on Chinese economic, regulatory, political, and market conditions.
- Currency concentration: exposure to renminbi, Hong Kong dollar, or other currencies relative to the currency in which you spend and measure your goals.
Decide which layer matters most. Replacing one Chinese technology stock with a U.S. technology stock may reduce country concentration while leaving sector concentration nearly unchanged. Replacing it with a global fund may broaden both, but only after you inspect the fund’s actual holdings.
Use four dimensions of diversification
Diversification is not one transaction. It is the deliberate spread of risk among holdings and asset classes. The SEC summarizes the principle in its March 31, 2026 Investor.gov bulletin: “Diversification means investing in a variety of assets to lower the overall risk of your investment portfolio.”
Across companies
Reduce dependence on any single issuer by checking the top holdings of prospective funds and your existing securities. A fund with dozens of constituents can still be dominated by a few large companies. Read the methodology or mandate to learn whether it weights by market capitalization, limits individual positions, or follows a narrow theme.
Across sectors
Technology businesses can respond similarly to interest rates, regulation, capital-spending cycles, and investor sentiment. Adding companies from healthcare, consumer goods, industrials, utilities, financials, or other sectors can address technology-sector risk, but each sector has its own economic sensitivities. Examine the sector exposure of the entire portfolio rather than assuming a fund labeled “global” is balanced.

Across regions
A broad regional or global fund may reduce dependence on Chinese markets. However, international investing introduces additional risks that the SEC describes in its International Investing guidance, including currency movements and controls, market volatility, differences in available information, political and economic conditions, higher costs, lower liquidity, and limits on legal remedies. Diversification can lower one concentration while adding these exposures, so they belong in the decision rather than in a footnote.

Across asset classes
Stocks are not the only way to diversify. Depending on your time horizon and ability to tolerate losses, you might hold a mix of equities, high-quality bonds, cash or cash equivalents, and other permitted asset categories. The purpose is to avoid having every part of the portfolio depend on the same growth assumptions. Asset allocation should be evaluated alongside your near-term spending needs; money needed soon generally has less capacity for equity-market volatility than long-term capital.
A step-by-step diversification process
- Set the scope. Decide whether you are assessing one account, all investment accounts, or the household portfolio. Include employer plans and funds whose holdings you cannot see immediately.
- Capture current weights. Record each security’s market value, percentage of total assets, country and sector exposure, currency, and whether it is a direct holding, ADR, ETF, or mutual fund.
- Look through every pooled vehicle. Download the latest holdings and calculate the contribution of repeated issuers. Note the date of the holdings because funds change positions.
- Write a risk-reduction objective. State whether the priority is reducing one-company risk, Chinese-country risk, technology-sector risk, equity risk, currency risk, or a combination. This prevents a superficially different investment from recreating the original problem.
- Screen possible replacements. Compare broadness, top holdings, sector and country limits, expenses, trading mechanics, liquidity information, and overlap with what you already own.
- Check implementation constraints. Before selling, review tax consequences, account rules, trading hours, settlement procedures, and any restrictions in your plan or brokerage account.
- Choose a schedule. You can make changes at once, in stages, or through new contributions and periodic rebalancing. The appropriate approach depends on your circumstances; it is not a market-timing rule.
- Document the result. Save the target risk description, the holdings used to calculate exposure, the date, and the conditions that would trigger a review.
Routes that can broaden a concentrated portfolio
The following routes solve different problems. They are alternatives to evaluate, not a prescribed shopping list or a recommendation of any particular security.
| Route | What it can diversify | What to verify | Risks or limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Broad domestic or global equity exposure | Company, sector, and geographic concentration, depending on the mandate | Country weights, technology weight, top holdings, index methodology, expenses, and overlap | May still contain Chinese technology companies and can remain equity-heavy |
| Non-China sector exposure | Country concentration while retaining or changing technology exposure | Whether the fund or securities are genuinely outside China and how much technology risk remains | Sector correlations can remain high; “non-China” does not mean low risk |
| Multi-sector regional exposure | Technology and single-country dependence | Regional allocation, issuer limits, currency mix, and liquidity | Political, economic, currency, information, cost, and legal-remedy risks vary by market |
| Bonds, cash, or other asset classes | Overall equity and growth-stock risk | Duration, credit quality, liquidity, inflation sensitivity, and how the asset fits your horizon | These assets have their own risks and may produce lower long-term growth than stocks |
| New contributions and rebalancing | Concentration without necessarily selling immediately | Whether contributions are large enough to change weights and when to review | Exposure can remain concentrated for a long time; prices can move before the portfolio reaches its intended mix |
Broad funds: useful only when they are broad in practice
A pooled fund can provide many holdings in one transaction, but the label is not proof of diversification. Read the fund’s stated universe and current portfolio. A “global technology” strategy may reduce China exposure while keeping nearly all assets in technology. An emerging-markets fund may hold several Chinese issuers among its largest positions. A broad-market fund may have a smaller China allocation but still contribute to overlap with your direct shares.
Compare prospective funds on the same facts: number and concentration of holdings, top-10 weight, country and sector breakdown, expense ratio, turnover or other disclosed trading characteristics, and the way you buy or sell it. Do not infer that two funds are complementary merely because their names differ.

ETFs and mutual funds have different trading mechanics
ETFs generally trade throughout the market day at prices that fluctuate, while mutual funds are generally bought or redeemed at the fund’s calculated net asset value under their applicable rules. The SEC’s international-investing material discusses fund expenses and trading features; read the prospectus and current disclosures for the vehicle you are considering. A lower stated expense does not by itself resolve concentration, currency, liquidity, or legal risks.

Adding non-China technology
If your main concern is China-specific risk but you still want technology exposure, companies in other countries can change the country mix. They do not eliminate technology-sector sensitivity, valuation risk, or correlation during broad technology sell-offs. Check revenue geography as well as incorporation and listing: a company listed outside China can still depend heavily on Chinese customers, suppliers, regulation, or operations.
Adding non-technology sectors
Sector diversification addresses a different source of concentration. Look for exposure to industries whose revenues and cost structures are not driven by the same factors as the technology holdings. Review whether a proposed fund’s “consumer,” “communication,” or “internet” classifications include businesses that behave economically like technology companies; classification systems differ.
Adding bonds or cash
Fixed-income and cash allocations can reduce the portfolio’s dependence on equity prices and provide resources for planned spending or rebalancing. Their suitability depends on maturity, credit risk, inflation, interest-rate sensitivity, and the date you need the money. A cash position can reduce market volatility but also lose purchasing power over time; a bond fund can fall in value when rates rise.

International diversification may improve the mix of risks, but it is not a free reduction in volatility. The SEC lists several considerations that should be checked before investing internationally.
- Currency movements and controls: changes in exchange rates can increase or reduce returns measured in your home currency. Some markets may restrict conversion or movement of capital.
- Market and political conditions: economic policy, political events, social conditions, and market structure can produce sharper or less predictable price moves.
- Information differences: accounting practices, disclosure timing, language, and access to management or filings may differ from what you expect in your home market.
- Liquidity: fewer buyers and sellers can widen trading costs or make it harder to exit at a desired price.
- Costs: commissions, custody charges, fund expenses, taxes, and other transaction costs may be higher than for domestic investments.
- Legal remedies: investor rights, courts, settlement systems, and the ability to enforce a judgment may differ. A foreign broker may not provide the same investor protections as a broker registered in the United States.
These risks apply to the new exposure as well as to the Chinese holdings you are trying to diversify. Read the fund prospectus, issuer filings, and brokerage disclosures rather than relying on a country label.
Understand the SEC’s warning about VIE structures
Some U.S.-listed companies with China-based businesses use a variable interest entity (VIE) arrangement. In the structure described by the SEC, the U.S.-listed issuer may not itself own the China-based operating company. Instead, a subsidiary enters contracts with the VIE to obtain economic rights or control.

The SEC’s September 20, 2021 VIE Investor Bulletin warns that contractual nonperformance, or changes in Chinese law or practice affecting enforceability, could cause the listed company to lose control over the China-based business. Investors could then suffer significant economic losses. This warning is specific to securities using such arrangements; it is not a claim that every Chinese company or every security has a VIE structure.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For a security that may use a VIE, read the issuer’s risk factors and regulatory filings. Confirm what entity you own, what contractual rights are described, which jurisdictions govern those contracts, and what the issuer says about enforcement and regulatory uncertainty. A fund can also hold VIE-based issuers, so look-through analysis matters here as well.
Match the allocation decision to your circumstances
The right mix cannot be determined from the phrase “concentrated in Chinese technology” alone. Consider:
- Goal and required return: funding a near-term expense, preserving capital, and building long-term wealth create different tolerances for loss.
- Time horizon: a longer horizon can provide more time to recover from volatility, but it does not make a concentrated position safe.
- Risk tolerance and capacity: your willingness to tolerate losses is different from your financial ability to withstand them. Both matter.
- Income and liabilities: employment tied to Chinese technology, a mortgage, or other obligations can increase your effective exposure even if the brokerage account is diversified.
- Taxes and account type: the tax result of selling an appreciated position depends on your jurisdiction, holding period, account, basis, and other facts. The cited sources do not establish a universal tax sequence or allocation.
- Liquidity needs: money needed for emergencies or a known payment should not be treated like long-term risk capital.
If selling appreciated holdings, interpreting cross-border tax rules, or setting an allocation would materially affect your finances, consider a registered investment adviser or other appropriately qualified professional. U.S. investors can verify an adviser’s registration and background through SEC and state resources before engaging one.

Immediate versus staged changes
An immediate change removes concentration sooner but locks in the price and tax consequences of the transaction. Staging changes can make the process psychologically easier and spread execution across dates, but the original concentration remains while you wait. Using new contributions to buy underrepresented assets can reduce weights without selling, although it may take substantial time.
Periodic investing and rebalancing
The SEC’s October 5, 2026 World Investor Week bulletin notes that periodic investing can help mitigate volatility and cautions that short-term trading or trying to time markets might reduce returns. Use a schedule based on your plan rather than headlines. At each review, calculate actual weights, inspect fund holdings again, and rebalance only under rules you have chosen in advance.

Set review triggers
Useful triggers include a material change in a fund’s mandate, a large shift in top holdings, a merger or delisting, a change in your time horizon, a new tax or account constraint, or a portfolio weight moving outside your documented range. A price drop alone is not proof that the investment has become diversified or that selling is appropriate.
Illustrative ways to diagnose the problem
Case 1: several funds, one repeated issuer
An investor owns direct shares in a Chinese internet company, a China-focused ETF, and a broad emerging-markets mutual fund. The account appears to contain three separate investments, but the same issuer is among the top holdings of both funds. The first action is to calculate the combined look-through weight. Replacing only the direct shares could leave a substantial indirect position, so the investor should compare funds by holdings and mandate before choosing a change.
Case 2: country diversification without sector diversification
An investor sells a China technology fund and buys a global technology fund. The country exposure may broaden, but the portfolio can still be dominated by technology companies that respond to similar interest-rate and valuation pressures. The investor should separately evaluate sector concentration and decide whether non-technology assets are needed.
Case 3: reducing equities as a near-term goal approaches
An investor who will need the money soon has direct Chinese technology shares, a global equity fund, and no liquid reserve. Adding another equity fund would not address the need for lower portfolio-wide equity risk. The relevant comparison is among suitable cash or fixed-income choices, their liquidity and risks, and the tax and account consequences of changing the existing holdings.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Counting funds instead of holdings: use look-through weights and identify repeated issuers.
- Trusting a fund name: read the mandate, current holdings, country and sector breakdown, and expenses.
- Assuming “international” means safe: account for currency, information, liquidity, cost, political, and legal-remedy risks.
- Ignoring indirect China exposure: inspect revenue, operations, suppliers, and fund holdings, not just the listing country.
- Overlooking VIE language: check issuer filings for contractual structures and the related enforceability warnings.
- Using a percentage copied from a generic article: set exposure in relation to your goals, horizon, risk capacity, taxes, and total economic exposure.
- Trading on headlines: follow a documented schedule and avoid assuming that short-term timing will improve returns.
- Neglecting broker protections: if using a foreign broker, confirm which investor protections, custody arrangements, and dispute mechanisms apply.
A practical checklist before you act
- Have you listed every direct share, ADR, ETF, mutual fund, and relevant account?
- Have you calculated the combined exposure of repeated issuers?
- Do you know your total China, technology, equity, and currency weights?
- Does each proposed replacement address the specific concentration you identified?
- Have you read the fund’s mandate, holdings, expenses, and trading features?
- Have you assessed international information, liquidity, currency, political, cost, and legal risks?
- For U.S.-listed companies with Chinese operations, have you checked for VIE disclosures and the issuer’s risk factors?
- Have you considered taxes, account rules, liquidity needs, and your time horizon?
- Is your implementation schedule written down so it does not depend on the next market headline?
- Do you know when you will recalculate holdings and rebalance?
Bottom line
To diversify a portfolio concentrated in Chinese technology stocks, measure the exposure through every account and fund, then spread risk deliberately across issuers, sectors, regions, and—when appropriate—asset classes. Broad funds can help only when their actual holdings reduce overlap. International assets bring currency, market, information, liquidity, cost, and legal risks, and VIE structures create additional contractual uncertainty for the specific securities that use them. Your goals, risk tolerance, timeframe, taxes, and personal circumstances—not a generic target percentage—should determine the final allocation and implementation plan.
