In electronics, interconnect describes the parts that join components or subsystems; passive describes components that carry or shape signals without providing signal gain; and electromechanical describes components whose electrical function involves mechanical movement or contact. These are useful classification lenses, not three mutually exclusive boxes: a connector, for example, can be an interconnect by function and also be classified as passive.
What do interconnect, passive and electromechanical mean?
Interconnect: parts that make a connection
An interconnect provides a joining path or interface between devices or circuit elements. The term can cover connectors, cables, contacts, splices and related structures. Its defining idea is the connection it makes, rather than a particular component shape.
The scope depends on context. IEC 61300-1:2022 is specifically about fibre-optic interconnecting devices and passive components. It also addresses topics such as mechanical splices, fibre-management systems and protective housings; it is not a general definition or test standard for every electronic interconnect. IEC 61300-1:2022
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPassive: no signal gain
In a basic functional distinction, a passive component does not amplify a signal. Resistors are a familiar example; connectors are also given as an example of passive components in a telecom recommendation hosted by India’s Telecom Regulatory Authority. That example illustrates one classification practice, rather than establishing a universal rule for every catalog or engineering context. TRAI-hosted recommendation

Electromechanical: electrical function with mechanical action
An electromechanical component’s electrical role involves mechanical movement or contact. Switches and relays are clear examples: a mechanical action changes or controls an electrical connection. The same TRAI-hosted recommendation also lists buzzers as examples. TRAI-hosted recommendation
Can a component fit more than one category?
Yes. The labels answer different questions. “Interconnect” describes what a part does in a system—joins devices or circuit elements. “Passive” describes whether it provides signal gain. “Electromechanical” describes a relationship between electrical function and mechanical operation or contact.

So a connector can be an interconnect by function and appear under passive components in a particular classification. A switch can form part of an electrical path while also being electromechanical because its contacts move. Treat the categories as overlapping ways to describe components, not as a single universal taxonomy.
How do formal classifications and standards fit in?
Standards and catalog systems organize components for particular purposes; their categories should be read within their stated scope. ISO’s International Classification for Standards (ICS) places electromechanical components for electronic and telecommunications equipment in ICS 31.220, including plug-and-socket devices and connectors, switches, and other electromechanical components. IEC 61360-1:2017 sets out principles for defining properties and building classification hierarchies for technical concepts in electrotechnology. IEC’s Common Data Dictionary contains component classes and associated characteristics, such as materials, geometry and features. This helps explain why a component may be described both by its function and by properties relevant to selection or documentation. IEC 61360-1:2017
For fibre-optic products, IEC 61300-1:2022 provides general guidance for basic testing and measurement procedures for interconnecting devices and passive components. It is used alongside the relevant product specification, which sets the applicable tests, severity, sequence where relevant, and permitted performance limits. The IEC catalogue lists a consolidated edition incorporating Amendment 2, published on 2025-12-04, with a stability date of 2032. This is a fibre-optic standard, not a rule governing all interconnect, passive and electromechanical components. IEC 61300-1:2022 catalogue record IEC catalogue record for the consolidated edition

How should you compare components?
When choosing between actual parts, compare the characteristics that matter to the application rather than relying on a category label alone:
Recommended Free Tools
- Function: Does the part join, filter or store energy, switch, or actuate?
- Interface and compatibility: Check connector form, pitch, and electrical or optical interface.
- Rated performance: Compare relevant voltage, current and frequency ratings, or optical loss for fibre-optic parts.
- Environment and qualification: Check temperature range, vibration, sealing and durability requirements.
These are practical comparison axes, not universal limits imposed by one standard. For fibre-optic testing, the product-specific specification determines which procedures and acceptance limits apply.

What does IPE mean in electronics?
In this context, “IPE” is a shorthand for the three terms in the topic: interconnect, passive and electromechanical. It is useful as a grouping label, but it does not by itself establish a single standardized classification. Check the particular catalog, classification scheme or standard to see how it defines its scope.
