Dispute it through the payment method that was charged, not through a special “AI chargeback” system. First identify whether the transaction used a credit card, debit card, bank-account transfer, digital wallet or another service. Then document exactly what you told the agent, what permissions and spending limits were active, what the checkout displayed, and what the merchant actually charged or delivered.
An agent buying the wrong item is not automatically the same as an unauthorized transaction. Your strongest claim depends on the facts: whether you approved the purchase, whether the agent exceeded its permitted scope, whether the amount or quantity was wrong, whether the goods arrived, and which payment protections apply. Contact the seller promptly, but do not let seller delays make you miss a payment-provider deadline.
Do these seven things first
- Identify the payment rail and transaction. Check whether the charge is on a credit card, debit card, or directly against a bank account. Record the transaction status (pending or posted), statement date, merchant descriptor, amount, and transaction date. The procedure and deadlines differ by payment method.
- Save the order record. Keep the order confirmation, receipt, item and seller details, fulfillment information, tracking, delivery record, and every return or refund message.
- Preserve the agent’s authorization trail. Save the instruction or prompt, agent permissions, spending and merchant restrictions, approval requests and responses, conversation history, and final checkout confirmation. These records show what you intended and what the agent was allowed to do at the time.
- Ask the seller to fix the order. Request cancellation, a correction, a return, or a refund when that is practical. Keep the request and the response. A seller contact can resolve a mistake quickly, but it is not a reason to postpone a qualifying dispute notice to your card issuer or bank.
- Notify the payment provider immediately. Tell the issuer or bank what happened in precise terms and ask how to submit the dispute. Follow its written-notice, online-form, mailing-address, and document instructions.
- Keep paying undisputed amounts. Follow the issuer’s directions about the disputed portion and your normal due date. Do not stop paying the entire account on your own. Keep copies of letters, uploaded forms, emails, call dates, representative names, and case numbers.
- Escalate if the response is inadequate. Use the issuer’s complaint or reconsideration channel. For a financial-product problem, you can submit a complaint to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). Report suspected fraud or scams to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
These steps are practical recordkeeping guidance, not a promise that an issuer will classify the transaction in a particular way. The legal result depends on the payment method, account agreement, authorization facts, and applicable law.

Use ordinary, factual language. “The agent bought something I did not want” describes a result; it does not by itself establish that you never authorized the transaction. Explain the instruction, limits, approval flow, and the difference between what you approved and what occurred.

| What happened | How to describe it | Likely next step |
|---|---|---|
| No authorization or agent exceeded permission | You did not approve this transaction, or the agent acted outside the permissions, seller limits, quantity limits, or spending cap in effect. | Ask the issuer or bank about its unauthorized-transaction process. Provide the authorization records and account-security details. |
| Agent was authorized but executed incorrectly | You authorized shopping within a scope, but it selected the wrong model, seller, quantity, shipping option, or price. | Seek a merchant correction or return and tell the payment provider the exact mismatch. Whether this is an unauthorized charge, billing error, merchant dispute, or another claim depends on the evidence and payment method. |
| Wrong amount or duplicate charge | The statement amount differs from the confirmed price, or the same purchase was charged more than once. | Submit the order confirmation and statement entry, identifying the exact arithmetic discrepancy. |
| Goods not received or not delivered as agreed | The merchant charged you, but the item never arrived or the delivery terms were not met. | Contact the seller while preserving the payment-provider deadline. This can be a qualifying credit-card billing-error category. |
| Product-quality or satisfaction problem | The item arrived but is defective, damaged, materially different, or unsatisfactory. | Use the seller’s return, warranty, or replacement process and ask the issuer which dispute path applies. Do not automatically label a quality complaint as a billing error. |
For a U.S. credit card, federal guidance treats unauthorized charges and certain non-delivery or non-acceptance situations as billing-error categories. A product-quality complaint can involve different rights and procedures. State the facts rather than choosing a legal label you cannot support.
Credit-card purchases: the 60-day written-notice rule
Call the card issuer or use its online dispute channel as soon as you discover the problem. For a qualifying U.S. credit-card billing error, send the written billing-error notice to the address or channel identified by the issuer within 60 calendar days after the statement containing the error was sent. A phone call alone may not preserve the statutory written-notice step, so use the issuer’s specified written method even if you also call.
What to include in the notice
- Your name, account number or the reference the issuer requests, and contact details.
- The merchant name or statement descriptor, transaction date, amount, and the statement date on which it appeared.
- A clear description of what you instructed or approved, what the agent was permitted to do, and what the checkout or merchant actually did.
- The remedy you seek, such as removal of an unauthorized charge or correction of a wrong amount.
- Copies of the order confirmation, receipt, agent authorization record, seller correspondence, and delivery evidence. Send copies, not irreplaceable originals.
What happens after notice
CFPB guidance says the issuer generally has 30 days to acknowledge a written dispute unless it has already completed the required resolution within that time. Investigation and final-resolution duties are governed by the applicable billing-error rules and your account circumstances. Keep the case number and watch for requests for additional information.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou may still dispute a charge after paying it; a credit or refund may wait for the issuer’s decision. Continue paying amounts that are not part of the dispute and follow the issuer’s instructions about the disputed balance.
You do not have to wait for the merchant
The CFPB’s official interpretation of 12 CFR § 1026.13 states: “A consumer is not required to first notify the merchant or other payee from whom he or she has purchased goods or services and attempt to resolve a dispute regarding the good or service before providing a billing-error notice to the creditor under § 1026.13(a)(3) asserting that the goods or services were not accepted or delivered as agreed.” You can still contact the seller for a faster solution, but a slow response should not consume the 60-day window.

Unauthorized credit-card liability
FTC guidance describes a federal limit of $50 for liability for unauthorized credit-card charges, subject to the facts and statutory rules. Report the transaction promptly, secure the account if necessary, and let the issuer determine how the protection applies.
Debit cards and bank-account electronic transfers
Do not copy the credit-card 60-day process onto a debit card or bank transfer. Notify your bank or credit union promptly and follow its instructions for an unauthorized electronic fund transfer. The institution may require a phone report, written confirmation, an online form, or a particular address.

Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCFPB guidance states that, after notice of an unauthorized electronic fund transfer, the institution generally has 10 business days to investigate, with additional rules concerning provisional credit, written confirmation, and reporting depending on the circumstances. The same guidance says a consumer who reports loss or theft of a debit card within two business days may have liability limited to the lesser of the unauthorized transactions or $50. The exact outcome depends on when you learned of the problem, when you reported it, and the transaction facts.
Information the bank will need
- The account and transaction identifiers, amount, date, and merchant descriptor.
- When and how you discovered the transaction and when you notified the bank.
- Whether the card, phone, token, password, or other authentication method was lost, stolen, shared, or still in your possession.
- The agent prompt, permissions, approval history, checkout result, and any seller response.
Ask when provisional credit will be issued, whether written confirmation is required, and how the bank will communicate its decision. Keep monitoring the account for additional transactions.
Digital wallets, buy-now-pay-later services and other methods
A digital wallet, buy-now-pay-later account, ACH transfer, prepaid product, or other payment service has its own agreement and dispute channel. The sources available for this guide do not establish one universal deadline for these methods. Open the provider’s transaction details, locate its dispute or fraud process, and ask which deadline applies to the specific payment rail. Do not assume that a credit-card rule, debit-card rule, or merchant return policy automatically governs.

Who is responsible for the checkout?
An AI shopping experience can involve four separate parties:
- The agent interface: interprets your instruction, searches or selects products, and may request approval.
- The merchant: accepts the order, fulfills it, handles returns, and communicates about delivery.
- The payment provider: authorizes and posts the charge under its account rules.
- The card issuer or bank: investigates disputes under the payment network and applicable consumer-protection rules.
OpenAI’s September 29, 2025 announcement about ChatGPT Instant Checkout said the user could confirm order, shipping, and payment information in chat while the merchant remained the merchant of record for fulfillment, returns, support, and communication. OpenAI’s developer documentation says merchant systems validate checkout details, decide whether to accept an order, charge the payment method, and confirm or decline. Features, participating merchants, and availability can change, so verify the current checkout flow shown in your account rather than relying on an old description.
Retailer terms can add another layer. Target’s posted Agentic Commerce Tool terms say: “Target will evaluate disputes involving an Approved Agent based on the permissions in effect at the time of the transaction, applicable account protections, relevant evidence of authorization, and applicable law.” That is Target’s stated approach, not a universal rule for every retailer, issuer, or jurisdiction. It illustrates why the permission record matters.

“Can I dispute a charge if my AI bought the wrong thing?”
You can ask the payment provider to review it, but do not call it unauthorized unless the facts support that statement. Say, for example: “I authorized the agent to buy a 13-inch laptop under $900 from an approved seller. It ordered the 15-inch model for $1,149 without an approval request.” Attach the instruction, limit, approval record, order confirmation, and seller response. The provider will decide whether the facts fit an unauthorized transaction, a billing error, a merchant return issue, or another category.
“What if I never approved the purchase?”
Explain whether the agent had standing permission to complete purchases or whether an approval was required for this transaction. Distinguish “I never saw a separate approval screen” from “I never gave the agent authority to purchase.” A standing authorization, an account setting, a compromised account, and an agent malfunction can lead to different analyses. Report the transaction promptly and preserve the screen or log showing the missing or bypassed approval.
The agent selected the correct item but the seller sent nothing
Describe this as non-delivery or delivery not as agreed, include the promised and actual dates, and retain tracking and seller correspondence. For a credit card, this can fit a qualifying billing-error category; still protect the written-notice deadline.
The item arrived damaged or does not meet expectations
Start with the merchant’s return, warranty, replacement, or refund process. Tell the issuer exactly what is wrong and ask which rights or dispute path apply. A quality or satisfaction complaint is not automatically an unauthorized charge or a billing error.

The statement shows two charges
Compare the order confirmation, authorization holds, posted entries, taxes, shipping, and refund credits. If two posted charges remain for one order, identify both transaction dates and amounts and submit the merchant’s confirmation showing that only one purchase was intended.
Deadlines, records and escalation
Make a deadline table as soon as you discover the problem. Write down the statement date, the 60-calendar-day credit-card notice deadline if applicable, the date you contacted the bank or wallet, and every response date. A pending authorization can disappear or post later, so continue checking the account and update the case with the final entry.
If the provider denies the dispute, read the explanation and submit any requested authorization, delivery, or amount evidence by the stated deadline. Ask whether reconsideration, a second review, or a written response is available. If the issue concerns a financial product or service and remains unresolved, the CFPB complaint process is an escalation option. If you suspect an impersonation, account takeover, or scam, report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and secure the affected account, passwords, and payment credentials.
For a large loss, repeated unauthorized activity, or a dispute involving complex contract or state-law questions, consider a qualified consumer-law resource. No single agent instruction or approval pattern is classified identically by every issuer or court, so a prompt, accurate record is more useful than an unsupported legal label.
Quick decision guide
| Payment method | First notice | Key timing or protection | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|---|
| U.S. credit card | Issuer’s dispute channel plus written billing-error notice as directed | Qualifying notice within 60 calendar days after the statement was sent; issuer generally acknowledges within 30 days | Do not rely on a phone call alone or wait for the merchant before sending a qualifying notice |
| Debit card or bank electronic transfer | Bank or credit union, promptly and in its required format | Generally 10 business days for initial investigation after notice of an unauthorized EFT; debit-card loss/theft reported within two business days may limit liability to the lesser of transactions or $50 | Do not transplant the credit-card deadline |
| Wallet, BNPL, ACH or other service | The provider named in the transaction details, and the underlying bank or card issuer when relevant | Deadline and rights depend on the service agreement and payment rail | Do not assume one universal chargeback process or deadline |
The figures above are process and liability rules described in CFPB and FTC guidance, not guarantees of a refund. Your account terms, notice timing, transaction type, and evidence control the result.
