If a FICO score looks wrong, dispute the inaccurate information in the credit report used to calculate it—not the score as if it were a standalone account. Obtain each relevant report, identify the specific error, send a documented dispute to every affected credit reporting company and to the company that supplied the data, then review the results. A corrected report may change future score calculations, but no legitimate source can promise a particular point increase.
Why a “FICO score error” is usually a credit-report error
A credit score is a calculated output. It is generally produced from information in one or more credit reports, together with a particular scoring formula and the lender’s product requirements. There is usually no line item on a score report that can simply be edited. The practical remedy is to correct, complete, or remove the inaccurate report information that fed the calculation.
Many consumer scores use a 300-to-850 range, but ranges and formulas differ by company. A lender can use a different score model, a different report source, or a score pulled on a different date. Seeing two different scores therefore does not, by itself, prove that either score is wrong.

| What you are comparing | Why it can differ | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Credit reports | A bureau may receive different updates, dates, balances, or account histories from furnishers. | Account ownership, status, payment history, dates, balance, credit limit, and duplicate entries. |
| Consumer score and lender score | Different scoring models, report sources, products, and pull dates can produce different results. | The model or product named in the disclosure, the report source, and the date the score was calculated. |
| Score after a correction | Each model weights data differently and may update on a different schedule. | Whether the underlying report was actually changed; do not assume a fixed number of points. |
Get every relevant credit report before disputing anything
Start with the reports that a lender or score provider may have used. AnnualCreditReport.com is the federally recognized route for obtaining reports from the three nationwide companies. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau guidance says online reports are available free weekly from each of those companies. The agency has also described an additional Equifax report offer through December 2026; because that offer is time-limited, verify its current terms when you request a report.

Checking your own report is a “soft” inquiry and does not hurt your credit score. Download or print each report and keep the version showing the date obtained. A later investigation is easier when you can demonstrate exactly what appeared before and after the dispute.
Use a line-by-line error checklist
- Identity details: wrong name, phone number, address, employer, or other identifying information.
- Mixed file: another person’s account is attached to your file because of a similar name or other identifying detail.
- Accounts you never opened: possible identity theft or a reporting mix-up.
- Ownership and status: an account is attributed to you instead of an authorized user, or a closed account is shown as open.
- Payment history: a payment is marked late even though it was made on time, or the number of late payments is wrong.
- Dates: incorrect opening date, payment date, first-delinquency date, or other date that changes how long an item appears.
- Balances and limits: balance, credit limit, past-due amount, or utilization figure does not match the creditor’s records.
- Duplicates: the same debt or account appears more than once.
Do not dispute a negative entry merely because it lowers your score. Accurate negative information is generally not removable on that basis. The issue must be that the information is inaccurate, incomplete, does not belong to you, is duplicated, or cannot be verified.
Compare the report with your records
For each suspected error, make a small evidence file. Compare the report entry with original account statements, payment confirmations, bank records, account-closure notices, identity-theft documents, and prior correspondence. Keep the report page that shows the disputed entry and mark the relevant lines on a copy.

| Account owner or identity | Account application, identification-theft report, creditor correspondence | Did you open or authorize this account? |
| Payment status and date | Bank statement, payment confirmation, cancelled check, receipt | Was the payment made by the reported due date, and was it credited correctly? |
| Balance or credit limit | Current and historical statements, payoff letter | Do the reported amounts match the creditor’s records for the same date? |
| Opening, closing, or delinquency date | Agreement, closure confirmation, billing history | Is the event date reported accurately? |
| Duplicate debt | Collection notices, account numbers, payment history | Are two listings actually the same obligation? |
When several bureaus show the item, record the differences. Compare the reporting company, furnisher, account identifier, ownership or status, payment history, dates, balance, limit, and whether the item appears more than once. A discrepancy at one bureau can coexist with a correct entry at another.

Prepare a specific, evidence-backed dispute
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau recommends a written explanation stating what is wrong and why, with copies of supporting evidence. A focused dispute is more useful than a vague request to “fix my score” or a mass-produced form that does not identify the account.
Include the following in a mailed dispute:
- Your name and current contact information.
- The report confirmation number, if the report provides one.
- The name of each disputed account or item and its account identifier.
- The exact field that is inaccurate, such as “30-day late payment reported for May 2025.”
- A short explanation of the correct fact and why the report is wrong.
- A clear request to correct or delete the item and send the corrected information to the reporting companies.
- A copy of the report excerpt with the disputed entries marked.
- Copies of relevant records. Send copies, not originals.
Keep a complete copy of the letter, every enclosure, and the date sent. Certified mail with a return receipt is optional, but it creates a delivery record. Online and telephone channels may also be available; use the current dispute instructions printed on the report or the reporting company’s current dispute page because addresses and contact methods can change.
Send the dispute to both required sides
Send the same factual dispute to every affected credit reporting company—Equifax, Experian, and/or TransUnion—and separately to the furnisher that supplied the information. A furnisher can be a lender, card issuer, landlord, collection company, or another business that reports account data. Correcting only one side can leave the same error in the other company’s records.
- Identify the affected reports. Send to each bureau where the inaccurate item appears.
- Identify the furnisher. Use the company name and dispute address shown on the report or its current correspondence.
- Submit the evidence packet. Include the marked report excerpt and copies of records with each submission.
- Record delivery and dates. Save confirmation numbers, screenshots, postal receipts, and the date each party received the dispute.
Do not send different versions of the facts to different recipients. If an account is the result of identity theft, include the relevant identity-theft documentation and explain that the account is not yours. If a payment was timely, identify the payment date and attach the confirmation rather than simply asserting that the late mark is unfair.

What happens after a dispute is filed
The reporting company generally investigates, forwards the dispute and relevant information to the furnisher, and reports the result to you. CFPB guidance says furnishers generally must investigate and respond within 30 days after receiving the dispute. If the furnisher finds that the information is wrong or cannot be verified, it must correct or remove it and notify the reporting companies. The reporting companies then update their files.
A dispute can be classified as frivolous or irrelevant when it lacks enough information to identify what is being challenged—for example, a vague demand with no account or entry specified. The company must explain that decision and send notice within five business days after making it. A specific account number, disputed field, explanation, and supporting record reduce the risk that your request will be rejected for lack of detail.
Track the investigation
- Calendar the expected response period from the date each recipient received the dispute.
- Keep the investigation result, not just an email saying that a case was opened.
- Compare a fresh copy of each report with the original copy.
- Check whether the correction reached every bureau where the error appeared.
Interpret the result without assuming a score increase
If the item is corrected or removed
Verify the exact field that changed. A corrected report may affect future score calculations, but the available CFPB guidance does not establish a guaranteed number of points or require all score products to update identically. A lender’s score can still differ from a consumer score because the lender may use another model, report source, or pull date.

If the furnisher says the information is accurate
Compare its explanation with your records. If the company relied on an incorrect date, ownership record, payment application, or balance, submit a focused follow-up with the missing evidence rather than repeating a generic template. You may ask the reporting company to include a brief statement of your dispute in the file and in future reports.

If only one bureau changes its file
That does not automatically mean the other bureaus violated a rule; each may have received different data. Send the correction and evidence to every bureau that still displays the error, and retain the result from the bureau that changed its entry as supporting documentation.
Escalate an unresolved or mishandled dispute
If a reporting company does not respond, gives an inadequate response, or continues to publish information that your records show is inaccurate, several options remain:
- Request a statement in the file. Ask the reporting company to include a brief explanation of the dispute for future reports.
- Submit a complaint to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Attach the original dispute, evidence, delivery proof, and investigation result.
- Contact your state attorney general. Provide the same organized record and identify the companies involved.
- Get legal advice. CFPB materials note that lawsuits and damages may be available for certain violations and that time limits apply. A qualified lawyer or legal-aid service can assess deadlines and remedies for your facts.
Escalation is strongest when it shows a clear timeline: what the report said, what you sent, when it was received, what the company investigated, and why the response did not resolve the specific error.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsProtect yourself from credit-repair scams
The legal right to dispute inaccurate credit-report information is free. Be cautious of any company that guarantees a particular score increase, promises to erase current and accurate negative information, or tells you to dispute facts you know are correct. Accurate negative entries generally cannot be removed simply because they reduce a score.

Identity-theft accounts, duplicate debts, accounts that are not yours, and information that cannot be verified are different from accurate negative history. Describe the actual problem and provide evidence. Paying a fee does not create a special dispute right or force a bureau to change correct data.

Quick decision guide
| Situation | Next action |
|---|---|
| Your report contains an account you do not recognize. | Check for identity theft or a mixed file; dispute with each bureau showing it and with the furnisher. |
| A payment is marked late but you paid on time. | Attach payment confirmation and dispute the specific month, status, and date. |
| The same debt appears twice. | Identify matching account details and request removal of the duplicate listing. |
| Your score differs between two services. | Compare model, report source, and pull date before alleging an error. |
| A dispute is rejected as vague or frivolous. | Resubmit with the exact account, disputed field, explanation, and evidence; retain the five-business-day notice. |
| The company confirms the data is accurate but you disagree. | Request a statement of dispute, escalate with your documented timeline, and seek legal advice if appropriate. |
What a successful correction can—and cannot—do
A successful dispute changes the report data that was investigated. It does not guarantee approval for a loan, a particular interest rate, or a specific score. Future scores depend on the corrected report, the scoring model, the data source, and the date of calculation. The reliable measure of success is that every affected report now accurately reflects your identity, accounts, payment history, dates, balances, and limits.
