If a U.S. credit report contains information that is inaccurate or incomplete, dispute the specific entry with every credit reporting company that displays it, and consider disputing it with the business that supplied the information. Identify the exact error, explain the correction you want, attach copies of records that support your position, and keep proof of what you sent. The usual investigation period is 30 days; certain cases can take up to 45 days.
What to do first when you find an error
Start with the report itself. Credit reporting companies do not necessarily show identical information, so a correction made on one report does not automatically correct the same item on another. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) says, “If you identify an error on your credit report, you should start by disputing that information with the credit reporting company (Experian, Equifax, and/or Transunion).” Read the CFPB’s current instructions before submitting: How do I dispute an error on my credit report?
Identify the exact item
Record the bureau or bureaus where the problem appears, the account or reference number, the section of the report, and the specific fact that is wrong or incomplete. Common examples include an account that is not yours, a payment marked late when you paid on time, a balance that is incorrect, a duplicate account, or a personal detail that does not belong to you. Do not dispute information merely because it is unfavorable if it is accurate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDecide who should receive the dispute
Send a dispute to each credit reporting company whose report contains the error. Also consider sending a separate dispute to the furnisher—the lender, creditor, debt collector, landlord, utility, or other business that supplied the information. These are complementary steps, not alternatives. The bureau investigates the report entry, while the furnisher reviews the data in its own records.

Collect the reports and supporting records
Use the current version of each report you intend to dispute. Mark or note the page and item where the error appears. Gather records that directly support the requested correction, such as a billing statement, payment confirmation, account-closure notice, identity-theft documentation, or correspondence from the furnisher. The evidence should address the particular fact you are challenging; there is no single document that every dispute requires.
- Write down your full name and current contact information exactly as it appears on the report.
- Copy the report page showing the disputed entry and mark the item clearly.
- Note the account number or reference number, using only enough digits to identify the account safely when a full number is not necessary.
- Keep copies of every document you send. Send copies, not irreplaceable originals.
- Save screenshots or confirmation pages for an online submission and note the date and time of a phone call.
Choose an online, phone, or mail dispute
Each bureau offers its own submission process. Check the bureau’s current contact or dispute page before filing because addresses, telephone numbers, required forms, and portal steps can change. The right channel depends on how much documentation you need to provide and how you want to retain a record.
| Channel | When it is useful | Record and evidence considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Online | Fast submission when the bureau’s portal accepts the report item and your supporting files. | Save the confirmation number, submitted text, uploaded files, and a screenshot or downloaded copy of the confirmation. |
| Phone | Questions about the bureau’s process or a straightforward issue when the representative can open a dispute. | Ask how to provide documents, record the date and representative details, and request a confirmation number. A phone call may provide less room for a detailed explanation than a written dispute. |
| A detailed explanation with a paper packet of marked report pages and supporting records. | Keep a complete copy of the packet. Certified mail and a return receipt are optional ways to document delivery; they are not legal requirements. |
The CFPB describes online, phone, and mail options and says a consumer may use certified mail with a return receipt to create a record that a mailed dispute was received. Choose the method that lets you explain the error clearly and preserve evidence of submission.

1. Open the bureau’s current dispute channel
Use the bureau’s official website, telephone instructions, or mailing instructions. Confirm that you are disputing a specific report item rather than requesting a general credit-score review. If more than one bureau shows the item, prepare a separate submission for each one.
2. Describe the entry precisely
State the account name, account or reference number, and the exact field that is wrong. Explain why it is wrong in factual terms and identify the correction you want. For example, you might explain that a payment was made before the reported due date and ask that the late-payment notation be corrected, or that an account was opened by someone else and ask that it be removed after investigation. Avoid a broad statement such as “my report is inaccurate” without identifying the entry.

3. Attach relevant copies
Include the marked report page and copies of records that support the explanation. Organize the packet so the reviewer can match each document to the disputed item. Do not send originals that you cannot replace. If a portal limits file types or sizes, follow its instructions and keep a record of what was successfully uploaded.
4. Submit and preserve proof
For an online dispute, save the confirmation screen, confirmation number, submitted narrative, and uploaded files. For a phone dispute, note the date, time, representative or reference number, and any instructions for sending evidence. For a mailed dispute, retain the letter, every enclosure, the mailing receipt, and—if you choose it—the certified-mail tracking and return receipt. These records establish what the bureau received and help you track the deadline.

Do not assume that one bureau will notify the others about your individual dispute. File with each bureau that displays the inaccurate information and tailor the marked page or account reference to that bureau’s report.
What to include in a mailed dispute letter
A written packet should let the bureau identify you, locate the report entry, understand the factual problem, and see the requested remedy. Include:
- Your complete name and contact information.
- A report confirmation number, if the report provides one.
- The disputed account or reference number and the report section or page.
- A concise explanation of what is inaccurate or incomplete and why.
- A direct request to correct or remove the particular item, as appropriate.
- A copy of the report page with the entry marked.
- Copies of relevant supporting records.
- A list of the enclosures and a copy of the entire packet for your files.
Address the packet using the bureau’s current instructions for credit-report disputes, not an old address found in a prior letter. If you want delivery documentation, certified mail with a return receipt is an option. It adds a postal record, but the CFPB does not require certified mail for a valid dispute.

Dispute the information with the furnisher too
The furnisher is the company that supplied the information to the bureau. A direct furnisher dispute can be useful when the company’s own records contain the mistake or when you want the source to correct its reporting to all bureaus to which it sent the data.
Use the address shown on the report or the address the furnisher designates for credit-reporting disputes. Put the dispute in writing, identify the account and exact error, explain the correction requested, attach copies of supporting records, and keep a complete copy. You can send the furnisher dispute at the same time as the bureau disputes; waiting for one recipient before contacting the other is not required.
How the investigation timeline works
After receiving a dispute, the bureau generally forwards the dispute and relevant information to the furnisher, investigates, and sends you the result. The CFPB explains the timing in How long does it take to repair an error on a credit report?
| Stage | Usual or stated period | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Investigation | Generally 30 days from receipt | The bureau reviews the dispute and information supplied by the furnisher. |
| Possible extended period | Up to 45 days in specified situations | Examples identified by the CFPB include some disputes made after receiving a free annual report and cases in which the consumer sends relevant additional information during the initial 30-day period. |
| Notice after completion | Generally within five business days after the investigation concludes | The bureau sends the outcome and, when applicable, an updated report. |
These are process deadlines, not a promise that an item will be removed or that a credit score will rise. Keep the submission date and any delivery confirmation so you can tell when the period began. If you send additional relevant information during the initial period, note that it may place the dispute in the category for which the investigation can take up to 45 days.
Read the result and verify the report
When the bureau responds, compare the result with the original entry and your requested correction. A response may indicate that the information was corrected, deleted, or verified as accurate. Review the enclosed or newly available report to confirm that the change appears in the actual file, not just in a message describing the investigation.

If the information is inaccurate or cannot be verified
The furnisher must update or remove information that is found inaccurate or unverifiable and must notify the reporting companies to which it supplied that information. Check each bureau’s report that contained the entry. If one still displays the old data, send that bureau the result and identify the remaining discrepancy.
If the bureau says the information is accurate
Read the explanation and compare it with your records. If you still disagree, you can ask the bureau to add a brief statement explaining the dispute to your file and to future reports. Keep the wording factual and focused on the particular entry. A statement of dispute does not itself guarantee deletion or a score change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do if the issue is not resolved
Maintain the complete file: the original report, dispute text, evidence, delivery or portal confirmation, bureau response, and any furnisher response. That record helps you identify exactly what remains disputed and prevents you from sending inconsistent explanations.
Request the statement of dispute
If the bureau continues to report the item after its investigation, request that your brief statement of dispute be included in the file and future reports. Ask how the bureau wants the statement submitted and keep proof of the request.
Consider a CFPB complaint only after the required preliminary step
The CFPB’s credit and consumer reporting complaint notice says that, for a complaint about inaccurate or incomplete bureau reporting, you must first dispute directly with the company. The complaint process also requires you to attest that the dispute is no longer pending or that more than 45 days have passed. Do not submit that type of complaint while the bureau’s investigation is still active. Gather the dispute and response records before completing the complaint form.

A general consumer procedure cannot determine whether a particular person has a separate legal claim or remedy. If the facts involve substantial financial harm, repeated reporting after documented corrections, or a complex identity or collection dispute, consider obtaining advice from a qualified consumer-law professional or an appropriate nonprofit legal service.
Use the identity-theft process for accounts you did not open
If the inaccurate account or inquiry appears to result from identity theft, use the Federal Trade Commission’s recovery process at IdentityTheft.gov. The FTC’s guidance directs consumers through reporting and recovery steps for identity-theft-related debts and accounts.
An identity-theft report is not a way to erase a debt that you actually incurred. Use that process only when the account, transaction, or debt was caused by someone else’s use of your identity. For other errors—such as a payment date or balance that is wrong on an account you recognize—use the ordinary bureau and furnisher dispute process.
Errors that can weaken a dispute
- Disputing only one bureau: File separately wherever the inaccurate entry appears.
- Using a vague explanation: Name the exact field, account, and correction requested.
- Sending unsupported accusations: Attach records that directly address the claimed error.
- Mailing originals: Keep originals and send copies.
- Relying on an old address or form: Verify the bureau’s current dispute instructions before mailing.
- Assuming certified mail is mandatory: It is an optional delivery record; online and phone channels are also available.
- Expecting an automatic score increase: The process corrects reporting; it does not promise a particular score or outcome.
- Disputing information that is accurate: A dispute should identify a real inaccuracy or omission, not simply an unfavorable but correct account.
- Filing a CFPB complaint while the investigation is pending: Wait until the dispute is no longer pending or more than 45 days have passed, as required by the CFPB complaint notice.
A practical recordkeeping checklist
Create one folder for each bureau and, when applicable, a separate folder for the furnisher. Store:
- The dated report page showing the original entry.
- Your explanation and requested correction.
- Every supporting document sent.
- Online confirmation numbers and screenshots.
- Phone-call dates, names or identification details provided by representatives, and instructions received.
- Mailing receipts, tracking information, and a return receipt if used.
- The investigation result and any updated report.
- Your request for a statement of dispute and any later response.
This file lets you check the 30-day or applicable 45-day period, show exactly what evidence accompanied the dispute, and prepare an accurate follow-up if the entry remains wrong.
What consumers can do without a credit-repair company
You can prepare and submit these disputes yourself. The FTC explains that consumers can do for themselves the same things credit-repair organizations can legally do and warns about problematic credit-repair practices in Credit repair: Fixing mistakes on your credit report. No paid service is required to access the bureau dispute process. Be cautious of anyone promising guaranteed deletion, a guaranteed score increase, or a way to remove information that is accurate.
Quick Recap
Quick decision guide
- One bureau shows the error: Dispute it with that bureau and consider a direct furnisher dispute.
- Several bureaus show the same error: File a separate, evidence-supported dispute with each one and identify the matching entry in each report.
- You need to send several documents: Use an online channel that accepts the files or a written packet; preserve a complete copy either way.
- You want proof that a mailed packet arrived: Use certified mail and request a return receipt, knowing this is optional.
- The account is the result of identity theft: Follow IdentityTheft.gov and dispute the resulting entries; do not use an identity-theft claim for a debt you owe.
- The bureau’s investigation is complete but the entry remains: Request a statement of dispute and wait to meet the CFPB complaint notice’s timing and attestation requirements before filing a complaint.
