To view an SVG file in a browser, open the local .svg file in a browser window, or navigate to the file’s web address if it is hosted online. You do not need a separate SVG viewer. A browser displaying the SVG as a document behaves differently from a web page displaying it as an image.

Open a local SVG file in your browser

  1. Find the .svg file on your computer.

  2. Open it with your browser using your operating system’s usual open-file method, or drag the file into an open browser window.

  3. If the file opens in another application, use your system’s “Open with” option to select a browser. The exact menu wording depends on your operating system.

The browser should display the SVG itself as a standalone document. You can also view an SVG hosted online by entering its URL in the browser’s address bar.

What you can do while viewing an SVG

Viewer controls vary by browser, but SVG conformance guidance describes zooming and panning in interactive environments. It also says browser environments must support searching and selecting text within SVG content. If the artwork contains selectable text, browser search may find it; text converted to shapes or paths is not text that can be selected as characters.

Direct viewing is different from showing an SVG on a web page

Opening an SVG URL or local file displays the SVG as a document. A site can instead include SVG as an HTML <img> or <svg> element, or use it in a CSS image context. These are image or page contexts, not the same as opening the SVG document directly.

For security, browsers may disable JavaScript and block external resources when an SVG is used as an image. Those image-context restrictions do not apply in the same way when the SVG is opened directly as a document. As a result, an SVG may not behave identically in a page and when opened on its own. MDN explains the restrictions for SVG used as an image.

If the SVG downloads instead of displaying

A download rather than an on-screen display can depend on the browser, its settings, and—when the file is hosted—the server’s response headers. MDN notes that a Content-Disposition response header can affect handling in documented cases. See MDN’s guidance on SVG download behavior.
