The most reliable way to find unfamiliar video game franchises is to combine several discovery routes instead of waiting for blockbuster publisher announcements: search by the genres, themes and mechanics you enjoy; inspect the creators behind one good find; save and follow promising games; try demos at recurring showcases; and use the indie spotlights built into the console you already own.
This approach finds both released series that are new to you and upcoming games. It is not a guarantee of finding a hit, and no platform’s recommendations or showcase is a complete, neutral map of independent development. Treat each route as a different filter, then verify availability, region, price and demo status on the current store page.
What “new franchises” can mean
“New” does not have to mean unreleased. A franchise can be new to you even if its first game launched years ago, while an announced game may be genuinely new but still have no confirmed release date. Keeping both meanings in view prevents two common mistakes: only browsing announcement news, and assuming every unfamiliar game is a brand-new series.

- New-to-you series: released games you have not encountered, often found through tags, recommendations, creator pages or curated lists.
- Upcoming series: announced or in-development games that you can track, and sometimes try through a demo.
- Independent games: a platform’s own category or editorial framing. “Indie” does not prove that a studio is small, that a franchise is new, or that every game in a spotlight is independently owned.
The goal is a repeatable funnel: start broad enough to uncover unfamiliar work, narrow by your actual tastes, and use a low-cost test before committing money or time.

Compare the main discovery routes
Each route exposes a different part of a platform’s catalog. The table describes the documented features, not a measured ranking of which method “works best.”

Start with tastes, not company names
Publisher-first browsing tends to return the same recognizable series. Instead, write down two or three things you want to feel or do in a game. Combine a broad genre with a more specific characteristic so the search can move sideways rather than simply toward the biggest releases.
Choose useful seed terms
- Genre: role-playing game, strategy, adventure, puzzle, simulation, horror or racing.
- Mood or setting: quiet, tense, hopeful, historical, science-fiction, folklore or post-apocalyptic.
- Mechanic: deck-building, time loop, colony management, stealth, local co-op, investigation or turn-based combat.
On Steam, search supports tags and descriptive terms. Try combinations rather than a single label—for example, a strategy tag plus “small town,” or a puzzle tag plus “time loop.” When you find a close match, open its tags and description to collect adjacent terms. Those terms become the next search rather than a reason to stop at the first result.

Use one familiar element and one unfamiliar element. If you enjoy a particular combat system, pair it with a setting you have not played. If you want a familiar mood, change the genre. This keeps the search anchored to a real preference while leaving room for a new franchise to make its case.
A Steam workflow for finding unfamiliar series
Steam offers several distinct routes. Use them in sequence so you do not mistake one recommendation surface for the entire store.
1. Search the store by tags and descriptions
- Enter a genre, mechanic or setting in the store search.
- Open a promising result and inspect its tags, description and related titles.
- Record two or three new terms that describe what appealed to you.
- Run another search using those terms, then open games from studios you do not recognize.
The Steam Discovery Update documentation describes tag- and description-based browsing, but its historical catalog counts are not current statistics. Use that page for the feature concepts, not for claims about today’s catalog size.

2. Use personalized suggestions and the Discovery Queue
Steam’s personalized suggestions and Discovery Queue turn your existing library and activity into a guided list. Treat the queue as a sampling tool: open the store page, check the actual description and user-facing details, and move on if the premise is not right. Do not assume that a recommendation is an endorsement of quality or that it represents the whole catalog.

This reduces repeated mismatches and gives the system a more useful signal. It does not guarantee that similar games will disappear or that smaller studios will receive more visibility.
3. Add a human filter with curator recommendations
Steam curators provide lists and commentary from people or organizations with their own selection rules. Follow curators whose explanations match your preferences, not merely those with the largest audience. Compare a curator’s reasoning with the game’s store page, because a short recommendation may omit accessibility, content or technical details that matter to you.
4. Follow the creator after one good find
Open the developer’s or publisher’s creator homepage from a game you enjoyed. These pages can show other releases and series from that creator. If the catalog contains work you want to track, follow the creator. Steam documents that following can put recent releases into recommendations and send release notifications.
This is one of the fastest ways to move from a single discovery to a franchise or studio’s wider history. Check the credits and creator page carefully: a publisher may represent several unrelated developers, and a developer may have changed direction between projects.
5. Save candidates and review them later
Add plausible games to your wishlist or another platform-supported follow list rather than buying immediately. Revisit the list when a demo, release date, patch information or independent review answers a question you had. Keep a short note—“liked the investigation mechanic; unsure about combat”—so you can judge a new trailer or demo against a real concern.

Use Steam Next Fest to sample upcoming games
For unreleased PC games, Steam Next Fest is a concentrated way to test unfamiliar projects. Valve describes it as “a weeklong event focused on promoting upcoming games with playable demos.” Steamworks documentation says it recurs three times a year, in February, June and October. Those are the documented months, not a promise of exact dates; check the current event page before planning around one.
A practical Next Fest session
- Open the current Next Fest event page and filter by genres or themes you already identified.
- Read the short description and watch enough footage to understand the core loop.
- Install several demos rather than spending the whole event on one familiar-looking title.
- Play each demo long enough to test its central mechanic, controls and performance on your hardware.
- Write down what the demo proves, what it leaves unanswered and whether you want release notifications.
- Wishlist or follow the projects that earned a second look; remove the rest from your active list.
A demo is evidence about a particular build, not a guarantee about the final game. Note whether the demo is a vertical slice, a tutorial or a limited standalone scenario, and avoid treating missing features as confirmed omissions from the finished release.
Find console franchises through official indie spotlights
Nintendo Switch: Indie World
Nintendo’s Indie World pages list and feature selected independent games for Switch. Use the spotlight as a curated starting point, then open each game’s store listing to check release status, price, age rating, language support and whether a demo is offered.
The available pages are regional storefront surfaces. A game shown on a US page may have a different price, release date, rating or availability in another country. Do not infer that every title in an Indie World presentation is a new franchise; some are entries in an existing series, ports or follow-ups.
PlayStation: PlayStation Indies
PlayStation Indies highlights selected games and includes downloadable demos for some titles. Start with the spotlight page, shortlist games whose mechanics or themes match your seed terms, and then open the relevant PlayStation Store page for your account region.
Use the demo when one is offered, but check its scope and expiration conditions on the store listing. The reviewed PlayStation pages are US-specific examples, so catalog status, price and demo availability can change by country and over time.

Xbox: ID@Xbox
ID@Xbox is another discovery channel for independent releases. Its pages also point to selected titles playable through Game Pass. Before relying on a subscription, open the current Xbox listing and verify that the exact game is included, that it is available in your region and that the entitlement applies to your device. The ID@Xbox page does not establish that every game it lists is in the subscription catalog.

Evaluate a candidate before you commit
Discovery surfaces optimize for finding possibilities. Your next job is to decide whether a possibility deserves time, money or a place on your long-term list.

Build a repeatable weekly discovery habit
A small routine is more useful than an endless backlog. Rotate between broad search, creator follow-up and low-cost testing.
- Seed (10 minutes): choose two current interests and search their tags or descriptive terms.
- Shortlist (10 minutes): open unfamiliar developers, curator lists or a console spotlight and save only the strongest candidates.
- Test (20–60 minutes): play a demo, a subscription title or a free trial when one exists. If there is no trial, read the store details and wait for a discount or more information instead of guessing.
- Expand (5 minutes): follow the creator of anything you genuinely enjoyed and inspect its other releases.
- Prune (5 minutes): remove candidates that no longer fit, use “not interested” where available and keep your active list manageable.
Keep a simple record with the game, platform, creator, discovery route, one reason it interested you and the next action. After a month, you can see which routes actually produce games you play. That is a personal experiment, not proof that one platform’s algorithm or showcase is objectively better.
When discovery produces poor results
The same blockbuster-looking games keep appearing
Change the input rather than refreshing the same page. Search a mechanic or setting instead of a franchise name, exclude tags that repeatedly miss, browse a curator with a different focus and inspect the creator page of a mid-sized release you liked. The “not interested” or ignore control can reduce obvious mismatches on Steam.

You have too many candidates
Limit the list to three per session and require each candidate to have a specific reason for staying. A game that is merely famous or visually attractive does not need to remain on your shortlist if you cannot name the mechanic, theme or creator that interests you.
No demo is available
Do not treat the absence of a demo as evidence for or against quality. Check whether the game appears in a recurring showcase later, follow it for updates, inspect system requirements and look for a clear refund policy on the platform before purchasing.
A console spotlight game is missing from your store
Check the country or region associated with your account, then search the local store by the exact title. Nintendo and PlayStation spotlight pages can be regional, and release timing can differ. If the listing is absent, do not assume the game is permanently unavailable; its status may have changed since the spotlight.
Game Pass access does not work
Open the current Xbox listing and verify the title, device, region and subscription tier. ID@Xbox promotes selected games, but its page is not a live entitlement guarantee for every listed title.
Understand the limits of platform curation
Search, recommendations, creator pages and showcases are useful lenses, not complete catalogs. Algorithms can reinforce what you already play; curator lists reflect the curator’s tastes; and official spotlights select a small, editorially chosen subset. None of the documented pages proves that a route systematically favors small studios, uncovers every new franchise or delivers a higher success rate.
There are also practical limits:
- Store metadata can be incomplete, inconsistent or written for marketing rather than comparison.
- “Independent” is the platform’s framing and does not describe every studio’s ownership, budget or business relationship.
- Release dates, prices, demos, subscription inclusion and regional availability change.
- A demo or showcase appearance says that a project was selected or playable at that moment, not that its final quality or schedule is guaranteed.
Use at least two routes for important decisions: for example, discover a game through a spotlight, confirm it on the regional store, then test its demo or follow the creator. Cross-checking reduces the chance that one editorial or algorithmic surface determines your entire library.
A decision path you can reuse on any platform
- Name the attraction: write one genre, mood or mechanic you actually want.
- Search broadly: use Steam tags and descriptions, or the equivalent store filters available on your console.
- Add a human or creator lens: read a curator list, browse an official indie spotlight or open the developer’s catalog.
- Check timing: decide whether you want a playable release now or an upcoming project to track.
- Lower the risk: use a demo, a documented subscription listing or a wishlist before buying.
- Verify locally: confirm region, device, price, language, rating and current availability on the store attached to your account.
- Close the loop: follow creators you trust, mute repeated misses and prune the list so the next search remains useful.
This loop moves you from a specific taste to a wider set of studios and series without depending on the announcements of the largest publishers. It also leaves room for uncertainty: a candidate can be worth watching even when the available information is not yet enough to justify a purchase.
