The quickest way to find independent games on Xbox is to start with Indie Selects, Xbox’s curated discovery hub. It rotates weekly collections, themed spotlights and monthly staff selections, so it is more useful as a live page than as a fixed list. Then broaden your search through ID@Xbox, and watch for time-limited demo collections when Xbox runs an event.
These routes serve different purposes. Indie Selects filters games for players; ID@Xbox is the program that helps independent developers bring games to Xbox and self-publish; demo events let you try selected upcoming games before release. The process below shows how to use all three without assuming that a featured game, demo or menu label will remain unchanged.
The three best discovery routes

A practical routine is to check Indie Selects first, use ID@Xbox when you want more possibilities, and treat demo festivals as special opportunities rather than a permanent store section. No special accessory or physical edition is required to browse these pages; your normal Xbox or Xbox-on-PC account and access to the relevant store surface are enough. Whether a title can be downloaded or purchased still depends on the device and country shown on your account.

1. Start with the Indie Selects hub
Indie Selects is Xbox’s direct, player-facing destination for curated independent games. Xbox says its team chooses weekly collections, rotates themed spotlights and publishes monthly selections. Because the lineup changes, open the live page whenever you browse instead of relying on an old article or screenshot.
Open it on Xbox
- On the Xbox dashboard, open Store.
- Choose Games. Xbox documented this path when Indie Selects launched, but labels and placement can change with dashboard updates, console generation and region.
- Look for the current Indie Selects collection or use the store’s search if the promotional tile is not visible.
- Open a game’s store page to check its current description, edition, price, availability and any trial or demo offered in your region.
The evergreen destination is the web hub at Xbox.com/IndieSelects. It is the safer bookmark when the console interface has been redesigned or a featured tile has moved.
Read the curation as a signal, not a permanent ranking
A game appearing in Indie Selects means it is part of a current curated collection. It does not mean the title will remain featured, that every ID@Xbox game has been selected, or that the game is unavailable through Game Pass. Xbox’s current FAQ says the weekly collection focuses on games outside Game Pass, while themed collections may sometimes include Game Pass titles.

Those details can differ by country and can change after a collection is published. If two editions are listed, compare their contents and platform compatibility on that page rather than assuming the featured tile identifies the correct version.
Use the monthly and weekly layers differently
- Weekly collections: a quick way to see what the curation team is highlighting now.
- Themed spotlights: useful when you have a mood or genre in mind, but their contents can change and may include Game Pass titles.
- Monthly selections: a larger editorial snapshot that can help you discover several games in one sitting.
Weekly browsing works well when you want a short list without reading every store page. A monthly selection is better when you are planning several purchases or want to compare different styles of independent game at once. In either case, save the title and developer names before leaving the page; a later visit may show a different lineup.
Xbox’s launch explanation described Indie Selects as a way to help more people discover, buy and play independent games. In the words of Glenn Gregory, ID@Xbox Marketing Manager, “we love games made by independent developers, and we want more people to discover them, buy them, and play them!” Read the current collection rather than treating that original launch lineup as a continuing catalog. 2. Use ID@Xbox to go broader
ID@Xbox is not a second name for Indie Selects. Xbox describes ID@Xbox as a program that helps independent developers bring games directly to players and self-publish on Xbox platforms. Its web page displays associated games, giving players another place to browse beyond the currently curated Indie Selects groups.

In other words, Indie Selects answers “what is Xbox highlighting for players now?” ID@Xbox answers “which games are connected with this independent-developer program?” Keeping those functions separate prevents a common mistake: assuming a game must appear in Indie Selects before it can be an ID@Xbox game, or that the ID@Xbox page is an exhaustive store index.
A useful ID@Xbox browsing method
- Open the ID@Xbox page and scan the games currently displayed.
- Open any title that matches your preferred genre, play style or accessibility needs.
- Follow the title to its Xbox store page and verify the current edition, platform, price, release status and regional availability.
- If you are not ready to buy, note the game’s name and developer so you can search for a demo, release update or later Indie Selects feature.
The page is particularly useful when the current Indie Selects theme does not match your interests. It gives you a broader starting set without claiming to enumerate every independent release. Search by the developer name as well as the game title when you want to see whether a studio has other Xbox releases.
3. Look for demos when Xbox runs an event
Demo collections are the best way to sample a game before deciding whether to follow it, add it to a wishlist or buy it. They are also the most temporary route: Xbox may promote them for a defined event window and then remove or replace the collection.
What the June 2026 Demo Fest shows
Xbox’s ID@Xbox Indie Selects Demo Fest announcement ran from June 4 through June 30, 2026 and offered more than 30 demos across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Xbox on PC. That was a dated event, not a promise that the same collection remains available. Use it as an example of the format: when a new Demo Fest appears, its announcement should state the dates and supported platforms.
Find an active demo collection
- Check the current Indie Selects hub and Xbox Wire’s recent Indie Selects announcements for a live demo-event link.
- On the console dashboard, start at Store, then Games, and look for a promoted demos or event collection. The exact tile and menu placement can vary.
- On Xbox on PC, use the Xbox app or Microsoft Store surfaces available to your account; the route can differ between app versions and regions.
- Open each demo’s own page and confirm the supported device, availability date and download requirements before installing.
If an event page lists a closing date, plan your testing before that date rather than assuming a demo will remain in your library indefinitely. Record games that interest you while the event is live, since the promotional collection may no longer be easy to find afterward.

Interpret an in-development demo correctly
Xbox warned in the June 2026 announcement that the demos were early looks at games still in development. A final version can differ at launch, and availability can vary by country while developers continue polishing their work. A demo therefore answers “does this early build interest me?” rather than guaranteeing final performance, content, features or release timing.
- Record the game’s name and developer if you want to follow later announcements.
- Expect unfinished presentation, missing features or changes between the demo and launch version.
- Do not infer that a demo’s presence guarantees a full release in your country.
- Check the store page again when the final game launches for the current edition and purchase options.
4. Add Xbox’s editorial roundups
Xbox Wire’s monthly Indie Selects articles provide context that a store tile cannot. The writers explain why staff chose a group of games, which can help you narrow a large collection by tone, genre or design appeal. For example, the June 2026 roundup supplies editorial reasoning around that month’s selections.
Use these articles as a second layer:
- Read the explanation for a game that catches your eye.
- Write down the title and developer names that fit your interests.
- Return to the live Indie Selects hub to confirm what is currently featured.
- Use the individual store page for the authoritative current information about platforms, price, release state and regional availability.
The article and the store hub have different jobs. The roundup preserves editorial reasoning; the live hub reflects the current collection. Treat an editorial description as a reason to investigate, not as a substitute for checking the current store listing.
Costs, requirements and practical preparation
Browsing Indie Selects, ID@Xbox and Xbox Wire does not require buying a physical product or printed guide. You need access to an Xbox store surface, a compatible device when a title is playable, and the account or region whose availability you want to verify. A purchase is a separate decision made from the individual store page.
Before downloading or buying, check the platform line carefully: the June 2026 Demo Fest covered Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Xbox on PC, but a future event can use a different device list. Also check whether the page identifies a demo, a full release or an upcoming title, and whether the listed edition matches your console or PC. Prices, subscription options, languages and accessibility details are account- and region-sensitive, so the store page is the final authority.
If you are comparing several candidates, write down the date you checked, the developer, platform, release status, price or subscription option, and whether a demo was available. That small record prevents a rotating recommendation from being mistaken for a current offer.

A repeatable Xbox discovery routine
When you have 10 minutes
- Open the live Indie Selects page.
- Choose one weekly or themed collection that matches your mood.
- Open two or three store pages and check the details that matter to you.
- Download a currently available demo, or add a title to your personal follow-up list if no demo is offered.
When you want a deeper search
- Start with the current Indie Selects collection for a curated shortlist.
- Read the associated Xbox Wire roundup for staff reasoning.
- Browse the ID@Xbox page for alternatives outside that shortlist.
- Search for a live demo collection or event announcement.
- Recheck every candidate’s store page before purchasing because featured lists, prices, editions and availability can change.
Keep a small tracking list
A simple note with the game title, developer, platform, demo status and the date you found it prevents a rotating collection from becoming a dead end. Xbox’s documented dashboard route is Store > Games, but no single set of navigation steps is established for every Xbox console generation, Xbox on PC version, mobile app or country. Promotional placements can move after an interface update. If you do not see an Indie Selects or demo tile, use the live web page and the store search rather than assuming the collection has disappeared.
Country differences also matter. Xbox specifically cautioned that Demo Fest availability could vary by country. A title, demo, language option, release date or purchase option shown in one region may not appear in another. Always treat the store page for your account as the final check. If a link opens a different regional Xbox domain, switch only through the region settings available to your account and rely on the resulting local listing.
