Disclose AI use both where listeners hear it and in the episode or show metadata when the platform’s rules call for it. A short spoken note near the generated segment is especially useful for audio-only listeners. Say exactly what AI produced—such as narration, a translation, a host voice, or music—and do not imply generated audio is a real recording.
The exact obligation depends on the platform and the kind of AI use. Apple Podcasts requires prominent disclosure in content and metadata for covered AI-generated audio or video; Acast distinguishes material AI-generated portions from realistic imitation; Spotify’s cited policy addresses unauthorized impersonation, not every use of AI. These are different rules, not one universal standard.
How to disclose AI-generated content in a podcast
Use a concise, specific statement in the episode audio and in the relevant metadata when required. For audio-only listening, place the spoken disclosure before or immediately after the AI-generated portion so the listener has the context at the point of use. Then describe the same use in the episode notes or podcast description as applicable.

State whether AI created narration, translated speech, a host voice, music, or another identifiable portion.
- Place the spoken note close to the segment. For audio-only episodes, the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) recommends a clear spoken disclosure before or immediately after the AI-generated portion. This is industry guidance, not a law or platform-wide rule. IAB’s January 2026 framework
- Add the disclosure to metadata. Use the episode description or notes, and show metadata when a platform requires it. Apple’s and Acast’s covered cases specify disclosure in metadata as well as the content. Apple Podcasts content guidelines · Acast Community Guidelines
- Be transparent about real-person voices or likenesses. If a recognizable person’s voice or likeness is used, obtain permission; a disclosure does not itself authorize impersonation.
- Check the rules for each distribution context. A platform’s policy, an industry recommendation, and a legal obligation are not interchangeable. Confirm the applicable current requirements for the episode and its audience.
A practical wording template is: “This episode uses AI-generated narration for the introduction,” or “This episode includes an AI-generated translation of the interview.” If relevant, clarify whether a real person’s voice was used with permission. These are suggested examples, not mandated scripts; the cited sources do not establish one universal phrase.

A simple decision process
Before recording a disclosure, work through four questions. First, what did the AI actually generate: speech, a voice or persona, a translation, music, or another part of the episode? Second, how much of the episode or advertisement does that material represent, and is it an imitation of realistic content? Third, whose recognizable voice or likeness, if anyone’s, does it use? Finally, where will the episode appear, and which platform rules or other requirements apply there?
These questions help because the relevant policies use different triggers. Apple’s cited rule covers creators using AI to generate audio or video, including synthetic voices, AI-generated hosts or personas, and synthetic replicas of real people. Acast makes the materiality of the generated portion relevant, while also calling for metadata disclosure for realistic imitation even when the portion is non-material. Spotify’s cited rule is about unauthorized impersonation. The IAB recommendation addresses disclosure placement in audio-only contexts. Do not treat the answer to one question as settling the others: a clear disclosure, for example, does not establish permission to use someone’s likeness.
Where to put the disclosure
Use placement that remains useful when a listener encounters the episode in different ways. Metadata informs people deciding whether to play an episode; a spoken note informs people who start listening without reading the description. If the AI-generated portion is a short segment within a longer episode, the nearby spoken disclosure helps preserve context when the clip is heard or shared separately.
- In the audio: Put a short spoken disclosure immediately before or after the AI-generated segment, especially in audio-only contexts.
- In episode metadata: Describe the use in the episode description or notes, with enough specificity to identify the affected portion.
- In show metadata: Add disclosure there when the platform requires it, including Apple’s covered use cases.
For a useful metadata note, include the function of the AI and the scope of its use. “AI-generated narration in the opening” tells a listener more than “AI used.” “The interview includes an AI-generated translation” identifies both the kind of output and the affected segment. Keep the description consistent with the spoken note; if the audio says the opening uses generated narration but the notes describe a translated interview, listeners may not know which disclosure is meant to apply.
Metadata is not a replacement for a spoken note where the applicable rule or guidance calls for disclosure in the content. Conversely, a sentence in the audio is not a substitute for show or episode metadata where a platform requires both. Check the full set of placement requirements for each service carrying the podcast rather than assuming that one publisher’s description reaches every listening context.
Do not rely on a watermark or label as the only safeguard. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) notes that visible or invisible watermarks can be altered or removed and that no single intervention addresses voice-cloning harms. Its discussion concerns AI-enabled voice cloning generally; it is not a podcast-specific disclosure mandate. FTC: Approaches to Address AI-enabled Voice Cloning
How platform rules differ
The main practical difference is what triggers disclosure and where it must appear. Apple’s rule covers generated audio or video broadly. Acast distinguishes a material AI-generated portion from a non-material but realistic imitation. Spotify’s cited policy focuses on unauthorized likeness impersonation rather than routine AI assistance.

| Apple Podcasts | AI-generated audio or video, including synthetic voices, AI-generated hosts or personas, and AI-synthesized replicas of real individuals | Prominent disclosure in the content and metadata for each episode and show | Apple also bars deceptive AI uses such as fabricating news or manipulating clips to present false narratives. |
| Acast | Material AI-generated portions; examples include AI translation and replication of a host’s voice or image. Realistic imitation can trigger metadata disclosure even when non-material. | For a material portion, prominent disclosure in the podcast file and metadata. For realistic non-material use, metadata disclosure. | Acast’s examples say AI-generated captions and a video background do not require disclosure. |
| Spotify Support | Unauthorized imitation of another creator’s recognizable voice, image, or identifying characteristics | Spotify may remove content that impersonates another creator or host without permission. | This cited policy is not a general disclosure rule for every AI-assisted episode; it notes exceptions, including certain parody. |
| IAB | Industry guidance for AI transparency and disclosure, including audio-only contexts | Recommends a clear spoken disclosure before or immediately after the AI-generated portion. For audio-only ads longer than 60 seconds, recommends repeating the disclosure at least once. | This is an industry framework, not legislation or a platform rule. |
| European Commission | Relevant AI Act transparency obligations for deepfakes and certain AI-generated public-interest content without human review or editorial control | Obligations described by the Commission apply from August 2, 2026. | Applicability depends on the episode and distribution context; this is not a universal podcast disclosure rule. |
Use the comparison along four axes, not as a single ranking of strictness: what sort of AI use triggers action; where the disclosure must appear; whether a real person’s voice or likeness is involved and permission exists; and whether the source is a platform rule, regulator guidance, or industry framework. Apple, Acast, Spotify, the European Commission, and IAB do not address identical questions. Meeting one source’s expectation does not necessarily satisfy another’s.
What Apple Podcasts requires
Apple says creators using AI to generate audio or video content—including synthetic voices, AI-generated hosts or on-screen personas, and AI-synthesized replicas of real individuals—must prominently disclose it to audiences in the content and metadata for each episode and show. That makes a spoken disclosure and clear episode and show descriptions the practical approach for covered uses.
Apple also prohibits deceptive AI use, including fabricating news or manipulating clips to present false narratives. A disclosure does not make a misleading fabrication acceptable. Review Apple Podcasts’ current content guidelines for the platform’s full terms.
Apple’s rule calls for disclosure in both locations: the content and the metadata. A spoken note alone therefore does not meet the placement described in its guideline, and an episode description alone does not either. The guideline also specifies metadata for each episode and show, so consider both levels when preparing a covered release rather than assuming the show page’s general description is enough. Keep the wording prominent and explicit about the generated element; a vague note may not tell the audience what audio or video was made with AI.
What Acast requires
Acast requires prominent disclosure in the podcast file and metadata when AI generates a material portion of a podcast or advertisement. It names AI translation and replication of a host’s voice or image as examples. Even if the AI-generated portion is not material, Acast calls for metadata disclosure when AI is used to imitate realistic content.
Acast’s examples distinguish those cases from AI-generated captions and a video background, which it says do not require disclosure. Do not assume that this exception applies to other AI uses; check the actual role and prominence of the generated material against Acast’s Community Guidelines.
The material-versus-non-material distinction should not be turned into a guessed percentage. The cited guidance gives examples and requirements but does not provide a universal numeric cutoff. If a portion is substantial, or if a smaller portion imitates realistic content, examine both sides of Acast’s rule. For a material use, the stated placement is the podcast file and metadata. For non-material realistic imitation, Acast still specifies metadata disclosure. The distinction affects placement; it is not permission to present an imitation as a real recording.

What Spotify’s policy means for AI voices
The cited Spotify policy is about unauthorized impersonation, not a blanket requirement to disclose every instance of AI assistance. Spotify says it will remove podcast content that impersonates another creator or host’s likeness without permission, including use of an AI voice clone. Its policy describes some exceptions, including certain parody.
Spotify reaffirmed this position in a May 19, 2026 creator-trust announcement. If a generated voice imitates an identifiable person, permission and platform policy matter independently of whether the episode contains a disclosure. Consult Spotify Support and the Spotify Newsroom announcement.
In practical terms, identifying a voice as AI-generated does not cure unauthorized use of someone else’s recognizable voice, image, or identifying characteristics. Check for permission before production and review the platform’s current terms. The cited Spotify materials describe certain exceptions, including some parody, but do not make a broad exemption for all content labeled parody. Do not infer that a disclosure or a creative label settles whether an exception applies.
Audio-only episodes and podcast ads
Listeners may not see a video label or read show notes while listening. For that reason, the IAB’s January 2026 framework recommends a clear spoken disclosure before or immediately after an AI-generated portion in audio-only contexts such as podcasts. For an audio-only advertisement longer than 60 seconds, it recommends repeating the disclosure at least once.
That 60-second figure is a recommendation for audio-only ads under the IAB framework, not a general rule for episode length, a legal threshold, or an Apple or Acast requirement. Keep the spoken disclosure close enough to the generated material that it is hard to detach from its context.

For an advertisement, distinguish the general advice for an audio-only podcast segment from the specific repetition recommendation. The IAB framework says to repeat the disclosure at least once when an audio-only ad is longer than 60 seconds. It does not make that threshold a requirement for every episode or a rule that other platforms must follow. If an episode contains an AI-generated ad as well as other generated audio, identify the relevant use clearly and check any applicable platform requirements for the podcast and advertisement.
What to disclose—and what not to imply
A useful disclosure tells listeners what was generated and where it appears. “AI was used in this episode” is less informative than identifying the element and portion. Do not suggest that synthetic narration is a real host recording, that a translated voice is the original speaker, or that an AI-generated scene documents an event that actually occurred.

- Name the function: narration, translation, music, host voice, or another specific element.
- Identify the scope: an introduction, a translated interview, a particular segment, or the full episode, as applicable.
- Clarify real-person involvement: if a recognizable voice or likeness was used, explain permission where relevant and ensure you have authorization.
- Keep wording factual: avoid implying that generated speech, events, or recordings are authentic source material.
These practices make the disclosure meaningful, but they do not override a platform’s policy or create permission to use another person’s likeness.
Try to make the disclosure understandable without requiring the listener to decode a technical label. The goal is to tell them what they are hearing, not to make a general claim about every tool used during production. If AI generated only a translation, name the translated audio rather than implying that the whole episode was generated. If AI generated the host voice, say that plainly instead of describing it only as “enhanced audio.” This level of specificity follows the source guidance’s focus on generated audio, material portions, and realistic imitation, while avoiding a claim that every minor production task has the same status.

EU transparency obligations: what podcasters should check
The European Commission says relevant AI Act transparency obligations applying from August 2, 2026 include informing people when they are exposed to deepfakes and certain AI-generated public-interest content produced without human review or editorial control. The Commission’s Code of Practice page was updated October 12, 2026 and lists June 10, 2026 as its final publication date. Those dates and categories do not establish a disclosure rule for every podcast or every AI-generated segment.
Whether an obligation applies depends on the content, the people and entities involved, and the distribution context. Treat the Commission’s guidance as a reason to assess the specific episode, not as a substitute for that assessment. See the Commission’s guidance on transparency obligations and its Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-generated Content.
This is a jurisdiction- and content-sensitive question, not a universal podcast checklist item with one answer. The Commission’s description concerns deepfakes and certain public-interest content without human review or editorial control. It does not establish that every use of generated narration, music, translation, or other AI assistance falls into those categories. If the episode may fall within a relevant category, assess the specific context and consult current applicable guidance rather than assuming the platform rule or a spoken note answers the legal question.
A pre-publication checklist
- Have you identified every meaningful AI-generated audio or video element?
- Does the spoken disclosure appear before or immediately after an AI segment when that placement is appropriate or recommended?
- Does the episode description or other required metadata describe the AI use clearly?
- Have you checked whether the hosting or distribution platform requires disclosure in both content and metadata?
- Does any generated voice or image imitate a recognizable person, and do you have permission?
- Could an edited clip mislead listeners about whether an event or recording is real?
- Have you treated legal requirements, platform rules, and industry recommendations as distinct obligations?
Make the review part of the publishing workflow, not just a last-minute check of the episode audio. Before release, identify generated elements, confirm the wording against the actual final edit, and add the required metadata wherever the episode is distributed. If a clip or advertisement is revised after the disclosure is recorded, check that the note still describes what listeners will hear. For platforms with separate show and episode descriptions, review each field that the applicable policy names.

Finally, recheck policies near publication. Platform requirements and guidance can change, and this overview is based on the cited materials rather than a determination about a particular episode. The cited materials do not define a single materiality threshold, give one universal disclosure script, or resolve every jurisdiction-specific legal issue. When the rules do not answer a question, avoid presenting an assumption as a mandate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to tell listeners if I use an AI voice?
It depends on the use and platform. Apple requires prominent disclosure in content and metadata for covered AI-generated audio, including synthetic voices and AI-generated hosts. Acast requires disclosure for material generated portions and metadata disclosure for realistic imitation even when non-material. Spotify’s cited policy focuses on unauthorized imitation of another creator or host, not every AI voice. If the voice imitates a recognizable real person, disclosure alone does not replace permission.
Where should I put an AI disclosure in my podcast?
For audio-only listening, the IAB’s January 2026 framework recommends a clear spoken note before or immediately after the generated segment. Add the use to episode or show metadata when the applicable platform requires it. Apple’s covered cases specify disclosure in both the content and metadata for each episode and show; Acast specifies the podcast file and metadata for material portions.
Do I have to disclose a small amount of AI-generated content?
There is no single threshold in the cited guidance. Apple’s rule covers AI-generated audio or video broadly. Acast distinguishes material portions, which require disclosure in the podcast file and metadata, from non-material realistic imitation, which still requires metadata disclosure. Its examples say AI-generated captions and a video background do not require disclosure. Check the specific rule instead of applying an assumed percentage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan I use an AI clone of a real person if I disclose it?
A disclosure does not itself authorize use of a recognizable person’s voice or likeness. Spotify says it may remove content that impersonates another creator or host without permission, including AI voice cloning, with some stated exceptions such as certain parody. Obtain permission where needed and check the relevant platform rules.
Does the EU AI Act require every podcast to label AI-generated content?
No such universal rule is established by the cited Commission guidance. Relevant transparency obligations applying from August 2, 2026 include deepfakes and certain AI-generated public-interest content without human review or editorial control. Applicability depends on the content and distribution context, so assess the episode rather than treating this as a rule for every AI use.
Should I repeat an AI disclosure in a podcast ad?
The IAB’s January 2026 framework recommends repeating a disclosure at least once for an audio-only advertisement longer than 60 seconds. That is industry guidance for audio-only ads, not a legal threshold or a general rule for episode length.
The Bottom Line
Say what AI generated, place a spoken disclosure near the segment for audio-only listeners, and add the required episode or show metadata. Check each platform’s actual rule, distinguish recommendations from legal obligations, and remember that disclosure does not authorize impersonation or make deceptive audio acceptable.
