I turned off my smart TV’s built-in microphone and am glad I did: I prefer to enable voice input only when I choose to use it. But “always-listening” is not an accurate description of every TV. Voice activation, microphone hardware, and data collection vary by model, region, settings, and software version.

What turning off the TV microphone changes

There is no single microphone setting or menu path for every smart TV. The TV’s brand, model, region, and software version determine which controls are available and what they do. Confirm your exact model before following step-by-step instructions; a menu path for another set may not apply.

It also helps to separate three things: a built-in microphone listening for a wake word, voice input started by pressing a button on the remote, and separate collection of viewing data. Disabling one does not necessarily disable the others.

How voice activation and transmission can differ

Samsung: interactive voice search

Samsung’s SmartTV privacy supplement describes interactive voice commands as collected when a user activates a control on the TV or remote and makes a specific search. Samsung says voice-recognition data collection can be disabled in Settings, but some voice-recognition features may then stop working. The document does not establish that this behavior applies identically to every model or software version. Samsung SmartTV privacy information

REC LOCK 2-Pack USB-C Mic Blocker Plug & Play for Smartphone, Tablet & PC
  • BEFORE PURCHASE - REC LOCK works as a virtual external microphone. It blocks recording when apps use an external mic — but can NOT override apps that are hard-coded to use your device's built-in microphone. Test with your built-in recorder app first for best results.

Helps prevent unwanted audio recording and protect your privacy. No software, pairing, or charging required. • CALLING NOTE - Most Android phones continue using the built-in microphone during calls, allowing normal conversations with REC LOCK connected. On iPhone 15/16/17/18, unplug REC LOCK before calls to use the phone microphone. Results may vary by device, OS version, and app.
  • USB-C & USB-A COMPATIBILITY - Features a USB-C connector and includes a USB-C to USB-A adapter for broad compatibility. Works with most smartphones, tablets, and computers, including iPhone 15/16/17, iPad, MacBook, Mac mini, and more.
  • PORTABLE & ANTI-LOSS - Compact and lightweight design with a premium metal storage case and foam padding for secure protection. Two pre-attached nylon lanyards let you attach REC LOCK to your bag, keys, or belt loop, keeping it ready wherever you go.

A separate Samsung statement from 2015 discussed the TV models covered by that statement and distinguished predetermined commands through the embedded microphone from interactive search through the remote microphone. It said users could disable voice-recognition data collection in the settings menu. That older description should not be generalized to current Samsung TVs. Samsung’s 2015 statement

LG: wake word and remote-button input

In a statement dated September 12, 2026, LG says supported models process wake-word audio locally and discard it if no wake word is detected. LG says speech-to-text begins only after a wake word or deliberate microphone-button activation. These are LG’s descriptions of its own supported models, not independent verification or a claim about all TVs. LG’s privacy statement

LG says a physical switch on supported models disables the TV’s built-in microphone and hands-free voice recognition. Remote voice input may still be available if enabled, when you press the remote’s microphone button. So turning off the TV’s mic may not disable the remote’s separate microphone.

Microphone privacy is not the same as viewing-data privacy

Turning off voice control does not necessarily stop a TV or platform from collecting other kinds of data. Roku’s privacy policy describes separate controls for Automatic Content Recognition (ACR), channel access to remote or mobile-device microphones, and retention of voice recordings. ACR is a viewing-recognition feature, not the same control as microphone access. Review the relevant settings separately if your aim is to limit both voice and viewing-data collection. What to check before changing a setting

  • Find the TV’s full model number and software version, then use the manufacturer’s documentation for that exact set and region. Labels and available controls can vary.
  • Determine whether you want to disable hands-free wake-word activation, all voice input, or only a particular app’s access to a remote or mobile microphone. Those controls may be separate.
  • Look for a physical microphone switch if your model has one. On supported LG models, LG says switching it off disables the built-in mic’s hands-free recognition; it does not necessarily disable remote-button voice input.
  • Review viewing-recognition and voice-recording settings separately. For Roku, the policy identifies distinct ACR, microphone-access, and voice-recording controls.
  • Consider the trade-off: Samsung warns that disabling voice-recognition data collection may make some voice features unavailable.

Using voice search without hands-free listening

If you want to avoid wake-word activation but keep occasional voice search, check whether your TV supports deliberate remote-button input. LG’s support instructions describe starting voice search by pressing the remote’s microphone button; controlling a connected set-top box may require setting up the integrated remote. The exact controls depend on your TV and remote. LG’s voice-search instructions
