How to Disable Windows 11 AI Features That Run in the Background

Windows 11 has no single master switch for every AI capability. To stop the feature you mean, use its own control: disable or remove Recall, turn off Click to Do, narrow Windows Search indexing, switch off Studio Effects, uninstall or de-emphasize the Copilot app, disable Microsoft 365 Copilot separately, or restrict a specific app’s background activity. The exact controls depend on whether the PC is a Copilot+ model, which Windows build and app version you use, your account type, and whether an administrator manages the device.

Start with the privacy-sensitive item you want to change rather than disabling unrelated Windows services. Some features are local and activate only after you use them; others can save data, respond to shortcuts, or apply camera and microphone effects. The sections below explain what each setting changes, what it does not change, and how to reverse it.

First identify which Windows 11 AI feature you want to stop

“AI running in the background” can describe several unrelated Windows components. Recall can save snapshots, Windows Search can maintain a semantic index, Studio Effects can process camera or audio input, and Copilot can remain installed with several launch paths. Click to Do is available on Copilot+ PCs but Microsoft describes its analysis as beginning only after you actively invoke it. A generic background-app switch cannot control all of these.

If you are not sure which component is active, check whether the PC is a Copilot+ model, look for the feature name in Settings search, and note whether the behavior occurs in Windows itself or only inside a particular app.

Disable, pause, delete, or remove Recall

Recall is the setting most people mean when they are concerned about Windows taking periodic screenshots. It is limited to Copilot+ PCs. Microsoft says each new user must opt in to saving snapshots; if you did not opt in, saving is off by default. Turning off saving later, deleting existing snapshots, and removing Recall are separate actions.

Stop future snapshots

1. Open Settings.
2. Select Privacy & security.
3. Open Recall & snapshots.
4. Switch Save snapshots to Off.
5. Confirm with Windows Hello if Windows requests authentication.

This prevents new snapshots from being saved, but it does not by itself promise that snapshots already stored on the device have been erased. Use the deletion controls in the same area if you need to remove existing data.

Pause saving temporarily

Use the pause option on the Recall & snapshots page when you want a temporary stop without changing the longer-term setting. Pausing is useful before handling confidential material or sharing the screen. Resume saving from the same page when you are finished. A pause is not the same as deleting saved snapshots.

Filter sensitive apps and websites

Recall lets you filter specified apps and websites. In Settings > Privacy & security > Recall & snapshots, open the filtering controls and add the apps or sites that should not appear in snapshots. Filtering limits what Recall saves; it does not remove the Recall component or erase unrelated snapshots that already exist. Microsoft also documents limits to filtering, so do not treat it as a guarantee that every form of sensitive content is excluded.

Delete saved snapshots

Use the delete controls on the Recall settings page to remove saved snapshots. Deleting is the appropriate step when you want to retain Recall for later but clear historical data. Windows Hello confirmation may be required for these changes.

Remove Recall entirely

1. Open Windows Search and type Turn Windows features on or off.
2. Open the matching Control Panel dialog.
3. Clear the checkbox for Recall.
4. Apply the change and restart Windows when prompted.

Microsoft says previously saved snapshots are deleted when Recall is removed. This is more complete than merely switching off snapshot saving. On a work or school PC, the checkbox or other choices may be unavailable because an administrator has applied a policy.

Choose the right Recall action

Turn off Click to Do on a Copilot+ PC

Click to Do is enabled by default on Copilot+ PCs where it is available. It is not a continuously analyzing desktop monitor in Microsoft’s current description: analysis starts after you actively engage with the feature and ends when you exit it. It can work with Recall snapshots and, when you choose an action such as web search or Copilot, selected content may be sent to an online provider.

1. Open Settings.
2. Select Privacy & security.
3. Choose Click to Do.
4. Set the feature to Off.

With Click to Do off, its documented keyboard and touch gestures will not launch it. Entry points in other parts of Windows may still be visible and can produce an error when selected. Microsoft says Click to Do cannot be removed. Availability varies by region and language, so a missing page may reflect rollout or eligibility rather than a damaged installation.

Limit semantic indexing in Windows Search

On eligible Copilot+ PCs, Windows Search can use semantic indexing in addition to traditional indexing. Microsoft says the semantic-indexing data is stored locally, is not stored by Microsoft, and is not used to train AI models. The documented controls let you exclude locations or file types; they do not establish a universal switch that disables every semantic-search component.

1. Open Settings.
2. Go to Privacy & security.
3. Select Searching Windows.
4. Open Advanced indexing options.
5. Adjust indexed locations and file-type exclusions to remove material you do not want included.

Excluding a folder reduces what Windows Search indexes there, but it can also make ordinary file searches less complete. Excluding a file type affects conventional search as well as semantic results. If you need to preserve fast search for most files, exclude only the locations that contain sensitive or irrelevant data.

Switch off Windows Studio Effects

Studio Effects are hardware-dependent camera and audio effects. Supported effects can consume processing resources and battery power, and the available list differs by device. Some PCs do not have the required neural-processing hardware or expose the same settings.

Use Quick Settings

1. Select the network, volume, or battery area on the taskbar to open Quick Settings.
2. Select the Studio Effects tile.
3. Turn off the effects you do not want, or use the tile to toggle Studio Effects off.

Turn effects off for a particular camera

1. Open Settings.
2. Go to Bluetooth & devices.
3. Select Cameras.
4. Choose the camera.
5. Turn off the listed effects individually.

If the Studio Effects tile or camera page is absent, the device may not support the feature, the camera driver may not expose it, or the feature may not be available in that Windows build. Disabling an effect changes processing for that camera or device; it does not disable every AI capability in Windows.

Remove the standalone Windows Copilot app

The Windows Copilot app is separate from Recall, Click to Do, Windows Search, and Copilot embedded in Microsoft 365. Uninstalling it is appropriate when you do not want the app installed. It does not change Copilot controls inside Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.

1. Open Settings.
2. Select Apps, then Installed apps.
3. Find Copilot.
4. Open its More options (…) menu.
5. Select Uninstall and confirm.

If Uninstall is not offered, the app may be provisioned or managed by your organization, or your Windows build may expose a different package state. Do not delete system folders manually; use the supported app control or ask the administrator who manages the PC.

Prevent accidental launches without uninstalling

The app can be launched with a dedicated Copilot key or with Windows key + C. To adjust the hardware-key behavior, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Keyboard and change the Copilot-key setting provided by your build. To remove a taskbar entry point, open taskbar settings and change the Copilot visibility option. Hiding or unpinning an icon does not uninstall the app and does not necessarily disable every other launch method.

Microsoft also describes a “Hey, Copilot” wake-word experience as opt-in in the Copilot app. If that option appears in your build, review the current Copilot app settings to turn it off. Wake-word controls are app-level and can vary with the app version and account; they are not a substitute for Windows feature settings.

Compare Copilot app controls

Disable Copilot separately in Microsoft 365

Copilot inside Word, Excel, and PowerPoint has its own setting. A Windows Copilot change does not disable those in-app features. Microsoft’s documented checkbox applies to supported Windows versions of those apps and is per-app and per-device.

1. Open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.
2. Select File, then Options.
3. Open the Copilot section.
4. Clear Enable Copilot.
5. Select OK.
6. Restart the Office application.

Microsoft states that the described checkbox is not available for work or school account sign-ins and lists minimum app versions as of March 13, 2025. If the control is missing, check the installed app version, license, update channel, and account type rather than assuming the setting was ignored.

Removing the Copilot button from the ribbon only hides an entry point; it does not disable Copilot. A broader privacy setting for connected experiences that analyze content can disable Copilot, but it also disables other features, including suggested replies, text predictions, Designer, and automatic alt text. Use that broader option only if you accept those collateral changes.

Dedicated toggle versus broader privacy control

Stop a specific app from running in the background

Windows offers a per-app background permission for supported apps, but this is not a global AI switch. Use it only after identifying the app responsible for the behavior.

1. Open Settings.
2. Select System, then Power & battery.
3. Open Battery usage.
4. Find the app and select its More options menu.
5. Choose Manage background activity.
6. Set Let this app run in the background to Never.

Microsoft says Never stops the app from running while inactive, along with its background notifications and updates. Mail synchronization, messaging alerts, cloud transfers, and other useful functions may stop until you open the app again or restore its permission. The option may not appear for every desktop application.

Why a setting may be missing or locked

The PC is not a Copilot+ model

Recall, Click to Do, semantic Search indexing, and some Studio Effects controls are tied to Copilot+ hardware or supported components. On a conventional Windows 11 PC, those pages may not appear because the feature is unavailable, not because it is silently active.

Hardware, driver, language, or region limitations

Studio Effects depends on camera, microphone, and processing hardware. Click to Do availability varies by region and language. Features can also arrive in stages, so two otherwise similar PCs may show different labels.

An administrator controls the device

Managed work and school devices can gray out Recall choices, enforce policies, or block app changes. Contact the administrator rather than attempting to bypass policy. Removing a feature from a managed computer may violate organizational requirements.

The account or app version is unsupported

Microsoft 365 Copilot controls depend on the application build and sign-in type. A personal account and a work or school account can expose different controls. Update the relevant app through its supported channel and check the account shown in the app before troubleshooting further.

The visible icon is not the feature itself

Hiding a taskbar icon, removing a ribbon button, or changing a keyboard shortcut changes an entry point. It does not necessarily stop data processing, uninstall the app, or disable an embedded feature. Use the feature’s dedicated setting when your goal is privacy or processing reduction.

A practical order for a privacy-focused shutdown

If you want the smallest set of changes that addresses the most sensitive behavior, work through these checks in order:

1. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Recall & snapshots; turn off Save snapshots, delete existing snapshots if required, and remove Recall through Windows features if you do not want it installed.
2. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Click to Do and set it to Off if the page exists.
3. Review Searching Windows > Advanced indexing options and exclude sensitive folders or file types while retaining indexing where you still need search.
4. Open Quick Settings and disable Studio Effects, then verify per-camera settings.
5. Uninstall the standalone Copilot app if you do not want it present; otherwise change the Copilot key, Windows+C, and taskbar entry-point settings.
6. In each supported Office app, use File > Options > Copilot to clear Enable Copilot, where the option is available.
7. Use Power & battery > Battery usage only for a specific app whose background notifications, updates, or synchronization you are willing to stop.

Restart after removing Recall or uninstalling an app. For other settings, close and reopen the affected app or camera session and verify the behavior again. If a setting remains unavailable, record the Windows edition and build, PC model, account type, and whether the device is managed; those details usually explain the difference.

What these changes do not do

• Turning off Recall does not disable all Windows Search, Copilot, or camera processing.
• Disabling Click to Do does not remove it; Microsoft says the feature cannot be uninstalled.
• Excluding a folder from Search indexing does not disable every form of Windows AI.
• Turning off Studio Effects does not disable the camera or microphone themselves.
• Uninstalling the Windows Copilot app does not disable Copilot in Microsoft 365.
• Hiding a Copilot icon or ribbon button does not disable the underlying feature.
• Setting an app’s background permission to Never can stop notifications and updates in addition to AI-related activity.

These distinctions matter because Windows 11 distributes AI-related controls across privacy settings, hardware settings, app settings, and account policies. There is no documented universal switch that turns off every capability at once.
