To disable Valve Anti-Cheat (VAC) on a standalone Counter-Strike 2 dedicated server, add -insecure to the server process’s launch switches, then stop and restart the server. If you start the server through a Steam dedicated-server interface, clear the Secure (Valve Anti-Cheat) checkbox instead. The setting applies when the server process starts; it is not a normal in-game console command.
What disabling VAC does in Counter-Strike 2
VAC is the anti-cheat security layer used by VAC-secure servers. Starting a CS2 dedicated server with -insecure tells the server not to operate as VAC secure. In Steamworks terminology, a secure server advertises the secure-server flag; removing secure operation changes the server into the separate insecure class.
This is a server-side security decision. It does not merely hide a setting from players, and it cannot be changed reliably by typing a command into the match console after the server is already running. The launch configuration must be changed and the process restarted.
Valve also documents a related client-side boundary: unsigned DLL injection can make the game launch in insecure mode, which prevents that client from playing on VAC-secure servers. That example is useful because it shows the practical rule: insecure mode and VAC-secure-server play are separate states. Disabling VAC on your server removes the server’s VAC protection and means you should not expect it to behave like a secure server.

Before you change the server
- Confirm that you are editing a dedicated server. The documented switch is for a standalone dedicated-server process. It is not a general instruction for turning off anti-cheat in ordinary matchmaking.
- Identify the real startup method. Your server may be launched from a shell, a Steam dedicated-server interface, a service manager, a scheduled task, a container entrypoint, or a hosting control panel. Edit the configuration that actually starts the running instance.
- Record the current arguments. Keep the existing map, port, account-token, directory, and other options. Add the security switch rather than replacing the complete command line.
- Plan a restart window. Because the switch is read at process startup, an already-running process will continue with its current security state until it is stopped and started again.
- Decide who can connect while protection is off. Use a private, password-protected, LAN-only, or otherwise access-controlled environment for development and testing. An insecure public server has no VAC enforcement to deter cheating.
Method 1: Add -insecure to a command-line launch
This is the direct method for a standalone server started from a command or script. The exact executable location and the rest of the arguments vary by operating system and deployment, so treat the following as a shape rather than a universal command.
- Stop the server cleanly. End the running CS2 process through the normal server control, service manager, or terminal. Do not edit a script and assume that a process already in memory has adopted the change.
- Find the launch command. Look for the shell script, batch file, service definition, container command, or control-panel field that invokes the CS2 dedicated-server executable. If several instances run on the machine, identify the one serving the port or map you intend to change.
- Add the switch as a standalone argument. Insert
-insecureamong the executable’s launch switches. It must be a separate token, not part of a map name, quoted description, or in-game command. - Preserve the existing startup options. Keep options required by your deployment, such as dedicated-server mode, map selection, network settings, and authentication values. Do not copy an example wholesale if it would remove settings your host needs.
- Save the configuration and start the process again. The server now starts in insecure mode.
- Check the configuration used for the next restart. A service manager or panel can regenerate a command from its own settings. Make sure the persistent definition, not only a one-time terminal command, contains the switch.
A minimal example looks like this:
/path/to/cs2 -dedicated -insecure +map de_dust2The path, map, ports, account token, and service-manager syntax in your installation may be different. The important part supported by Valve’s documentation is the -insecure launch switch.

Where the argument belongs
Place -insecure in the command that starts the executable, alongside other startup switches such as -dedicated. Do not place it after a later command that is interpreted as a console command, and do not enter it in the in-game developer console. A script can contain additional +-prefixed commands, but those do not turn a runtime console command into a substitute for the launch switch.
Shell scripts and batch files
If a script builds the command from variables, add the switch to the variable or argument list that is passed to the executable. Check the final expanded command if the script has separate “safe” and “test” profiles. A common mistake is editing an example script while the service actually starts a different file.

Service managers and containers
For a service manager, edit the executable’s argument field or the service’s start command, then reload the service definition if your platform requires it before restarting. For a container, change the image entrypoint, compose command, or launch arguments that create the server process, then recreate or restart the container. The principle is the same in both cases: the process that owns the CS2 server must receive -insecure at startup.
Method 2: Clear the Secure checkbox in a Steam server interface
Some Steam dedicated-server interfaces expose the same setting without requiring you to type the switch. In the server’s startup or configuration panel, locate the checkbox labeled Secure (Valve Anti-Cheat).
- Open the dedicated-server configuration or start panel.
- Find Secure (Valve Anti-Cheat).
- Clear the checkbox. Steam defines the checked state as “VAC enabled on the server” and the unchecked state as “VAC disabled on the server.”
- Apply or save the configuration.
- Stop and start the server so the interface launches the process with the new state.
Do not select both an interface setting and a conflicting custom argument without understanding which one takes precedence. If the interface writes a generated command, inspect that command or its saved profile after applying the change. The persistent setting must remain disabled when the server is started again.

Neither method is a live toggle for an already-running process. They are two ways of expressing the same startup decision.

Why administrators use insecure mode
Plugin development and testing
Valve’s Source Multiplayer Networking documentation states that loading plugins for Counter-Strike 2 requires -insecure, because plugin loading disables VAC. If you are testing a plugin, changing a custom server component, or iterating on a development configuration, insecure mode may be a functional requirement rather than an optional preference.
Keep this use limited to an environment where you control the participants. Test the plugin with the smallest practical group, protect the server address or password, and return to secure operation before opening a public instance.
Custom files and controlled experiments
Administrators sometimes need to test files or server behavior that is incompatible with the secure boundary. Insecure mode gives you a deliberate test state, but it does not make untrusted files safe. Verify files before deploying them, keep development data separate from production data, and retain a known-good secure configuration for rollback.
Private or LAN play
A private or LAN server can be a reasonable place to turn VAC off when the objective is local testing, a workshop for server operators, or a closed experiment. “Private” is a management choice, not an automatic security guarantee: a forwarded port, leaked password, or shared address can make a supposedly private server reachable by strangers. Restrict access at the game-server level and, where appropriate, at the network level.

What changes for players
Players joining an insecure server should not treat it as equivalent to a VAC-secure server. The server no longer provides VAC protection, and VAC-secure-server expectations do not apply. Insecure mode also does not grant a special exemption that makes other secure servers available to a client that is itself running in insecure mode.

- Server launch state: the administrator adds
-insecureor clears the Secure checkbox. This disables VAC on that dedicated server. - Client launch state: a player’s game can enter insecure mode for other reasons, including unsigned DLL injection. Valve says that client state prohibits play on VAC-secure servers.
- Gameplay command: typing text after the match has started is not the documented way to change the dedicated server’s VAC state.
How to verify that you changed the right instance
Verification starts with the launch configuration, not with assumptions about the server name. Confirm that the command or saved profile used to start the target instance contains -insecure, or that its Secure checkbox is visibly cleared. Then confirm that you stopped the old process before starting the new one.
- If several CS2 instances run on one host, check each service or script separately. Adding the switch to one instance does not change another.
- If a control panel generates commands, verify the generated profile after saving; a panel may overwrite manual edits on the next deployment.
- If the server appears unchanged after a restart, make sure the restart actually replaced the old process rather than reconnecting to an older process that was left running.
- Record the insecure profile separately from the secure profile so that another administrator can identify the security state before inviting players.
There is no published performance percentage, player-count threshold, or ban-rate figure that determines whether insecure mode is appropriate. The decision is about security policy and server purpose, not a guaranteed speed improvement.

The server still behaves as secure
- Check that
-insecureis in the executable’s launch arguments, not in a map command or console input. - Check that you edited the startup definition for the active instance.
- Stop the old process completely and start it again.
- If you use a graphical interface, clear Secure (Valve Anti-Cheat) in the profile that is actually being launched.
- Look for a service, supervisor, or panel that rebuilds the command and removes unrecognized manual edits.
A plugin does not load
First confirm that the plugin itself is compatible with your CS2 build and that its files are installed in the locations expected by its documentation. Then confirm that the server starts with -insecure; Valve specifically documents this requirement for loading plugins. Restart after changing the argument. If the plugin still fails, isolate it in a private test profile rather than weakening a production server repeatedly.

Players cannot connect after the change
The VAC switch changes the server’s security classification; it does not establish a universal replacement for your network, port, map, account-token, or authentication settings. Recheck that those existing arguments were preserved when you edited the command. Also verify that players are connecting to the intended instance and that the server is running after the restart.
The server becomes publicly reachable
Turning off VAC does not create access control. If a formerly protected server is now exposed, restrict it immediately with the server’s password or access controls and with network controls appropriate to your environment. For development, prefer a non-public address or LAN scope whenever possible.
How to turn VAC back on
To return the server to secure operation, remove -insecure from the persistent launch command and restart the process. In a Steam dedicated-server interface, select Secure (Valve Anti-Cheat) again, save the profile, and restart. Keep the secure and insecure configurations clearly separated so a later maintenance restart does not silently re-enable or disable VAC.
If you used insecure mode for plugin or file testing, remove or disable the test components that required it before opening the server to ordinary players. A secure restart is a configuration change, not a guarantee that every custom component is safe or compatible.
Operational checklist
- Identify the exact dedicated-server process to change.
- Save the current secure launch command or interface profile.
- Add the standalone
-insecureswitch, or clear Secure (Valve Anti-Cheat). - Preserve map, port, account-token, and other required arguments.
- Stop the old process and start the configured process again.
- Restrict access while VAC is disabled.
- Use the insecure profile for controlled plugin or development work only.
- Remove the switch or recheck the Secure box before returning to public play.
Key distinction to remember
-insecure is a launch switch for the server process. It is not an in-game command, not a client-side permission, and not a temporary toggle that can be applied without a restart. Use it when the server’s purpose requires an insecure environment, keep that environment controlled, and restore the secure startup configuration when testing is complete.
