Use the gamerule that matches your Minecraft edition and version. On Java Edition 1.21.11 and newer, run /gamerule mob_griefing false to stop creepers and other mobs from changing blocks, and /gamerule tnt_explodes false to disable TNT explosions. On Bedrock Edition, use /gamerule mobgriefing false and /gamerule tntexplodes false. Java 1.21.10 and earlier use the older camel-case names, mobGriefing and (where available) tntExplodes.
Choose the correct command first
The most common reason a command appears to do nothing is using a gamerule name from a different edition or version. Minecraft Java and Bedrock do not spell these rules the same way, and Java changed its gamerule naming convention in 1.21.11.

The Java TNT rule was added in Java 1.21.5 (snapshot 25w10a). A Java server older than the release that introduced the rule cannot use it; update the server or use a server-side protection solution that supports that version.
What each gamerule changes
mob_griefing, mobGriefing or mobgriefing
This rule controls whether mobs can alter the environment. With the value set to false, creepers no longer destroy blocks when they detonate. The same rule also affects other mob behaviors, including endermen picking up or placing blocks and villagers or other listed mobs interacting with blocks or items. It is a broad world rule, not a creeper-only switch.

Setting mob griefing off does not make hostile mobs harmless. Creepers can still approach and detonate, and mobs can still damage players through their normal attacks or explosion damage. The change is protection for the world geometry and certain mob interactions, not invulnerability.
tnt_explodes, tntExplodes or tntexplodes
This rule controls TNT explosion behavior. Set it to false when TNT should not explode on the server. It is separate from mob griefing: turning off mob griefing alone does not replace the TNT rule, and turning off TNT explosions does not stop creepers from damaging terrain.
These settings are gamerules for the world. Vanilla Minecraft does not provide a gamerule value that applies only to one town, claim, build, or region while leaving the rest of that world unchanged.
Java Edition 1.21.11 and newer
Use the new snake-case names on current Java releases.
Run commands in the game chat
- Join the affected world with an account allowed to use commands.
- Open chat and enter
/gamerule mob_griefing false, then press Enter. - Enter
/gamerule tnt_explodes falseand press Enter. - Test in a disposable area: ignite TNT and allow a creeper to detonate near replaceable blocks. The blocks should remain intact. A creeper can still hurt entities, so do not use yourself as the test target.
A successful command normally returns the new value in chat. If Minecraft reports an unknown or invalid rule, confirm that the server is actually running Java 1.21.11 or newer rather than only having a 1.21.11 client.

Run commands from a server console
In a dedicated-server console, omit the leading slash:
gamerule mob_griefing false
gamerule tnt_explodes falseConsole syntax varies slightly between hosting panels, but the important distinction is that the console command is normally entered without /. A console that forwards commands as in-game chat may require the slash; follow the panel’s command prompt behavior if it rejects the first form.
Restore normal behavior
Set either rule back to true:
/gamerule mob_griefing true
/gamerule tnt_explodes trueRestoring the value does not rebuild blocks already destroyed by an earlier explosion. Make a backup before experimenting if the world contains important construction.
Java Edition 1.21.10 and earlier
Older Java releases use camel-case gamerule identifiers. Use:
/gamerule mobGriefing false
/gamerule tntExplodes falseThe TNT rule is available only on versions that include it; it was introduced in 1.21.5. On an older release, the second command may be rejected because the rule does not exist. The mob rule is the long-standing protection for creeper block damage.

Guides written for older builds sometimes suggest that camel-case names remain accepted after the 1.21.11 transition. The available references do not establish that behavior consistently across current server builds, so use the spelling documented by the server’s own command completion. If the command parser offers mob_griefing and tnt_explodes, use those names; if it offers the older identifiers, use the version-appropriate form instead of mixing conventions.
Java 1.21.11 also moved gamerules into a registry as part of the naming and command changes. A server’s version, not the launcher or client version, determines which identifiers are valid.
Bedrock Edition
Bedrock uses lowercase names without underscores:
/gamerule mobgriefing false
/gamerule tntexplodes false- Enter the first command in the world chat to prevent mob block griefing.
- Enter the second command to stop TNT explosions.
- Test both behaviors independently because the rules govern different causes of destruction.
Do not paste the Java forms with underscores into Bedrock. mob_griefing and tnt_explodes are Java 1.21.11-and-newer names, not Bedrock names.
Some hosting documentation describes a server-properties setting for mob griefing on Bedrock, but the server-property references checked for this guide do not establish such a key. Treat the gamerule command as the supported control and verify any panel-specific property against documentation for the exact Bedrock server software and release.

Permissions, cheats and command access
Gamerules can be changed only when commands are enabled and the executing account has sufficient permission. In a single-player world, enabling cheats is the usual prerequisite. On a dedicated server, use the server’s operator or permission system and make sure command execution is enabled for that world.

- If chat says you do not have permission, ask an administrator to grant the required operator level or run the command from the console.
- If the command is treated as ordinary text, commands or cheats are disabled, or the account is not recognized as an operator.
- Having operator status alone does not override a server configuration that has commands disabled; enable the appropriate command setting first.
- When using a control panel, select the correct world and server instance. A command sent to a proxy, lobby, or stopped instance will not change the target world.
Changing a gamerule is not a file edit. It takes effect in the loaded world when the command is accepted and is normally saved with that world’s data. Keep a record of the values if several administrators manage the server.
Test the result without risking a build
Use a temporary flat area or a copy of the world. Test one mechanism at a time so a successful result is unambiguous.
Creeper test
- Set the mob rule to
falsefor your edition. - Place a few inexpensive blocks on the ground.
- Allow a creeper to enter its detonation sequence near those blocks.
- After the blast, check both the blocks and nearby entities. The blocks should be unchanged, while entity damage may still occur.
TNT test
- Set the TNT rule to
falsefor your edition. - Place TNT and provide the normal ignition method used by your server.
- Observe whether the TNT performs an explosion. Do not test beside valuable structures.
- Restore the rule to
trueonly after confirming that normal behavior is wanted again.
Testing both rules matters because a protected creeper blast does not prove TNT is disabled, and a non-exploding TNT block does not prove that creepers cannot alter blocks.

Troubleshoot a command that does nothing
1. Confirm the server edition
Java and Bedrock use three different spellings. A Java command pasted into Bedrock, or a Bedrock command pasted into Java, is invalid even when the words look familiar. Check the server software, not merely the player’s client.
2. Confirm the server version
For Java, 1.21.11 is the boundary for the snake-case names. Java 1.21.10 and older use camel-case identifiers, and the TNT rule is absent before its 1.21.5 introduction. A 1.21.11 client connecting to an older server does not make the older server understand new rules.

3. Check spelling and punctuation
- Java 1.21.11+:
mob_griefingandtnt_explodes. - Older Java:
mobGriefingandtntExplodes, where the TNT rule exists. - Bedrock:
mobgriefingandtntexplodes. - The value must be the literal Boolean word
falseortrue, not a number or quotation marks.
Use the server’s tab completion after typing /gamerule when available. Completion exposes the identifiers the running build recognizes.
4. Check where the command was entered
In-game chat normally uses a leading slash. Dedicated-server consoles normally omit it. A web panel may have a separate command field and may reject chat formatting. Read the response: an unknown-rule error indicates a version or spelling problem, while a permission error indicates access control.
5. Check that you changed the intended world
Gamerules are global to a world. If the server has several worlds, dimensions, or instances, verify that you issued the command while the affected world was loaded. A command in a lobby world does not protect a separate survival world.
6. Check for another explosion source
These two rules address creepers, TNT, and the other mob behaviors covered by mob griefing. They do not automatically disable every possible source of block damage, such as a plugin, command block, or a different game mechanic. Identify the source before changing additional settings.

- Players and mobs:
mob_griefing falseprevents the covered block changes but does not prevent mobs from attacking or damaging players. - Existing damage: Gamerules do not restore blocks lost before the change. Use a backup or a restoration tool for that job.
- Individual regions: The gamerule is world-wide. It cannot be set to false in one base and true elsewhere using vanilla commands.
- Other destruction mechanisms: Fire, falling blocks, commands, plugins, and unrelated mechanics require their own controls if they are the actual cause.
- Historical compatibility: A command copied from a guide may target a different release. Always match the spelling to the running server.
Global protection versus regional protection
Use the gamerules when the desired policy applies to the entire world: a creative build server with no TNT, or a survival world where creepers should never damage terrain. The simplicity is the main advantage: two commands, no plugin dependency, and one consistent policy.
If only selected areas should be protected, vanilla gamerules are too broad. A region-protection plugin for compatible Java server software may offer per-region flags, but its commands and supported versions depend on that plugin and server platform. Install and configure such a tool only from documentation matching your exact release; do not assume a command shown for one plugin works on another. Keep the global gamerule enabled when regional rules are intended to decide which locations are protected, and test the plugin’s priority and bypass permissions in a non-production copy.

Remember that the first row also changes non-creeper mob behaviors covered by mob griefing. Choose it because you accept those side effects, not solely because you want creeper protection.
Operational checklist for administrators
- Write down the edition and exact server version.
- Choose the matching gamerule spelling from the table.
- Back up the world before testing near important structures.
- Confirm command or cheat access before troubleshooting syntax.
- Run the mob and TNT commands separately and record the accepted values.
- Test creeper behavior and TNT behavior independently.
- Tell players that creepers may still damage entities when mob griefing is disabled.
- Document the policy so a restart, world copy, or administrator change does not reintroduce an unwanted value.

If you remember only one rule, remember the split: mob_griefing (or its edition-specific equivalent) controls mob changes to the world, while tnt_explodes (or its equivalent) controls TNT. Apply both when the goal is to stop both creepers and TNT from destroying a server’s builds.
