If your Roku TV is showing promotional videos, cycling through store displays, or refusing to retain picture settings, it is probably in Store (demo) mode. Roku’s documented way to leave Store mode is to perform a full factory reset, then select Set up for home use during Guided Setup. The reset removes the TV’s personal data and apps, so have your Roku account, Wi-Fi details, and app passwords ready first.
This procedure applies primarily to a Roku TV. A standalone Roku streaming player does not use the television’s Store-mode setup flow; if only the player is acting strangely, identify that separate problem before resetting the TV.
Confirm that Store mode is the problem
“Demo mode” on a Roku TV generally means the television was configured for a retail demonstration instead of normal household use. Roku’s setup documentation presents Store/demo configuration as an alternative to home setup, and its user guide says a full factory reset is required when Store mode was selected accidentally.
Common signs include:
- Promotional screens or demonstration videos appearing when the TV is idle.
- Picture adjustments reverting after you change them.
- Menus or on-screen messages that repeatedly behave as though the TV is on a sales floor.
- The television returning to demonstration content after a restart.
TCL describes the promotional-screen and reverting-picture-settings symptoms for TCL Roku TVs specifically. That is manufacturer-specific guidance, not a claim about every Roku TV brand. If your TV does not show these symptoms, check whether the issue is an app, input, remote, or network problem before erasing the television.

Roku TV versus a Roku player
A Roku TV has Roku software built into the television and presents the Store/Home choice during the TV’s Guided Setup. A Roku streaming player or stick is an external device connected to a television; resetting that player will not change a television that is itself in Store mode. Look for the Roku logo and model information on the TV’s settings and support pages, and identify which device is displaying the behavior.
For background on the setup choices, see Roku’s Roku TV setup guide.
What you need before starting
A factory reset is destructive. It unlinks the TV, removes installed apps and account information, and restores preferences to their defaults. The television will restart as if it were new and will require Guided Setup again.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Prepare these items before opening the reset menu:
- The email address and password for the Roku account you want to link.
- Your Wi-Fi network name and password, unless you plan to use another connection method supported by your TV.
- Sign-in details for streaming services and other apps you intend to reinstall.
- Any parental-control PIN or other household settings you will need to recreate.
- A way to control the TV. The supplied remote is simplest, but Roku says its mobile app can control the menu reset process when the remote is missing or unusable.
Write down unusual picture, audio, accessibility, HDMI-label, and parental-control choices if you want to restore them later. A reset does not preserve a list of those preferences on the TV. It also removes local app account information, so an app that opened automatically before the reset will ask for authentication again.
Do not begin the reset if you still need photos, settings, or app data stored only on the television. Those items will not remain on the device after the reset. The reset is for the Roku TV itself; it is not a repair for a separate problem with an external Roku player.
Disable demo mode through the Roku TV menus
Use this route when the TV responds to its remote or to the Roku mobile app. The labels below are Roku’s documented menu path; wording can vary slightly with software version or manufacturer skin.
- Open Home. Press the Home button on the Roku remote to display the main screen.
- Enter Settings. Select Settings, then open System.
- Open the advanced reset controls. Choose Advanced system settings, followed by Factory reset.
- Choose the complete reset. Select Factory reset everything. Read the warning on screen and confirm when prompted.
- Allow the TV to restart. Do not disconnect power while the reset is running. The TV will return to a factory-new state and launch Guided Setup.
- Select the household setup option. When Guided Setup asks how the TV will be used, choose Set up for home use, not the store-demo option.
- Complete Guided Setup. Select your country and other requested preferences, connect to Wi-Fi, link the Roku account, and let the TV finish its software setup.
- Restore your apps and preferences. Reinstall the channels you want, sign in to each service, and re-create picture, audio, accessibility, network, and parental-control settings.
Roku’s setup guide states: Select Set up for home use, unless you are configuring the TV for a store demo.
Choosing that option is the step that prevents the TV from being configured for retail demonstrations again.

The complete reset path is documented in Roku’s factory-reset instructions. Roku’s Roku TV User Guide v11.5 also identifies a full factory reset as the way to switch from Store mode to Home mode when Store mode was selected during initial setup.
What happens during and after the reset
| Area | Result of “Factory reset everything” | What you must do afterward |
|---|---|---|
| Roku account | The TV is unlinked from the account. | Link the TV to the intended Roku account during Guided Setup. |
| Installed apps | Apps and their local account information are removed. | Reinstall channels and sign in again. |
| Preferences | Picture, audio, network, accessibility, and other personal settings return to defaults. | Configure the settings again for your room and equipment. |
| Setup state | The TV returns to a factory-new state. | Run Guided Setup from the beginning. |
A reset does not preserve a list of your preferred settings on the TV. If you use custom picture modes, audio-processing choices, HDMI labels, or parental controls, note them before resetting so you can reproduce them afterward. The Roku account itself is not erased by resetting the television; the TV is simply unlinked and must be linked again. Each streaming service remains a separate sign-in that you will need to enter after its app is reinstalled.
If the remote or menus do not work
Use the Roku mobile app when the TV is controllable on your network
Roku identifies its mobile app as an alternative control method for menu operations. This can help when the physical remote is lost or its buttons no longer work. The phone and TV generally need to be reachable on the same local network for app control. Open the app, select the TV, use its on-screen remote to follow Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Factory reset, and then continue with the Home Use choice in Guided Setup.
If the TV has not been connected to your network, is frozen before network setup, or cannot be discovered by the app, the app cannot substitute for the physical reset controls. A compatible replacement remote is optional; verify compatibility with the exact TV model before buying one. Do not assume that a remote made for a Roku streaming stick will provide every control needed by a Roku TV.
Use the TV’s physical reset control only with model-specific instructions
Roku documents hardware-reset procedures for supported TVs, but button locations, button combinations, and timing differ by model and series. Do not assume that a reset button on one Roku TV works the same way on another.
Roku’s unlinked-mode instructions describe holding a TV’s physical Reset button for about 10 seconds in that procedure and warn that holding it too long can enter Recovery Mode rather than perform the intended factory reset. Roku’s general reset article lists additional model-dependent alternatives. Use the instructions for your exact television, not a generic timer copied from another model.
- Find the TV’s model number on its label, original documentation, or the manufacturer’s support page.
- Open Roku’s factory-reset support page and locate the hardware procedure that matches that model or series.
- Follow the stated button location and hold time exactly. Stop when the instructions say to stop; a longer hold is not safer.
- Wait for the factory-new startup screen, then choose Set up for home use during Guided Setup.
For the specific warning about physical reset behavior and Recovery Mode, consult Roku’s unlinked-mode article. If the TV enters Recovery Mode or displays an unfamiliar recovery screen, stop experimenting with button holds and follow the model’s recovery instructions or contact the TV manufacturer.

Complete Home Use setup correctly
The reset alone does not disable demo mode permanently. The setup selection determines how Roku configures the television.

Choose the correct use option
When the setup wizard asks whether the TV is for a store demonstration or a household, select Set up for home use. Store mode is intended for retail displays; it can apply promotional behavior and prevent normal household settings from sticking.
Connect and link the TV
Follow the on-screen country and network prompts. Enter the Wi-Fi password carefully, allow the TV to check for software updates if prompted, and link it to your Roku account. The account link is separate from signing in to individual streaming services.
Reinstall and configure apps
After setup, add the channels you actually use and sign in to each one. A factory reset removes the previous app installations and credentials, so a service that worked before the reset will not be ready until you authenticate again. Reapply parental controls and any accessibility settings at this stage.
Troubleshoot when demo behavior returns
The TV still shows promotions immediately after setup
Check that you selected Set up for home use, rather than advancing through the store-demo option. If you are unsure which choice was made, repeat the complete factory reset from the Settings menu and watch the Guided Setup screen carefully. Selecting Home Use is required even when the reset itself completed successfully.
Picture settings keep reverting
On TCL Roku TVs, TCL lists reverting picture settings as a Store Mode symptom and recommends a factory reset when the mode cannot be changed or the TV continues acting like a store display. Follow TCL’s model-specific guidance at TCL’s Store Mode to Home Mode support page. For another Roku TV manufacturer, use that manufacturer’s support documentation because the menu labels and firmware behavior may differ.
The reset option is missing or inaccessible
First try controlling the TV with the Roku mobile app if it is already connected to the same network. If the TV cannot be controlled through menus, identify the exact model and use the corresponding physical-reset procedure. Avoid repeatedly holding buttons for unverified durations: Roku warns that an excessive hold can lead to Recovery Mode.

The TV restarts but never reaches setup
Disconnecting power during a reset can interrupt the process. Allow the TV to complete its restart before pressing buttons. If it remains on a recovery or error screen, use the model-specific recovery directions from Roku or the television manufacturer rather than initiating random reset combinations.
You cannot sign in after the reset
Confirm that the TV is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network, then check the Roku account email and password. Remember that the factory reset removed app credentials as well as the TV’s account link; each streaming app may require a separate sign-in. A sign-in problem does not by itself indicate that Store mode is active.
Settings-menu reset versus physical reset
| Route | Use it when | Key limitation | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| Settings-menu reset | The TV responds to the remote or Roku mobile app. | Requires access to the Roku menus. | Choose Factory reset everything, then select Set up for home use. |
| Physical reset | The menus cannot be reached or controlled. | Button location and timing vary by TV model; an excessive hold can enter Recovery Mode. | Follow the exact model procedure, then select Set up for home use during Guided Setup. |
Both routes erase the TV and return it to setup. Neither route is complete until the Guided Setup process is finished with Home Use selected. If the menus work, the settings route is easier to verify because the warning and confirmation appear on screen. If the menus do not work, the physical route is a fallback, not a universal shortcut.
Quick decision guide
- Are promotional screens and reverting picture settings occurring on the television itself? Treat the issue as Roku TV Store mode and continue with the reset process.
- Is only an external Roku player misbehaving? Troubleshoot or reset that player separately; resetting the TV will not change the player’s configuration.
- Can you open Settings? Use the documented menu path and select Factory reset everything.
- Can you not reach the menus? Try the mobile app if the TV is already reachable on the same network; otherwise use the model-specific physical procedure.
- Has Guided Setup appeared? Select Set up for home use. This choice is required after either reset route.
How to avoid selecting Store mode again
- During initial or post-reset setup, read the use-purpose screen instead of accepting the first highlighted option automatically.
- Select Set up for home use for a television installed in a residence.
- Keep the model number and the manufacturer’s support page available before attempting any physical reset.
- Record important custom settings before a future reset so restoration is faster.
- When troubleshooting a Roku player, verify whether the television itself—not just the external player—is showing the demo behavior.
When to contact support
Contact Roku or the TV manufacturer when Store behavior persists after a confirmed full reset and a Home Use setup, when the TV repeatedly enters Recovery Mode, or when the exact physical-reset procedure is unclear for your model. Provide the model number, the software or setup screen currently displayed, and the steps already completed. TCL’s advice applies to TCL Roku TVs; other manufacturers may require different support paths.
For Roku’s current reset details, use the official factory-reset article. For setup wording, use the Roku TV setup guide. These pages are preferable to a universal button-hold recipe because Roku changes hardware controls by model.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a setting I can toggle instead of resetting the TV?
Roku’s TV guide and user guide direct owners to a full factory reset when Store mode was selected accidentally. After the reset, choose Set up for home use during Guided Setup; the reset alone is not enough.

What information is removed by Factory reset everything?
The TV is unlinked from the Roku account, installed apps and account information are removed, and personal picture, audio, network, accessibility, and other preferences return to defaults. You must run Guided Setup and sign in again.
Can I use the Roku mobile app instead of a remote?
Yes, Roku identifies the mobile app as an alternative for menu control when the TV and phone can communicate on the same local network. If the TV is not connected or cannot be discovered, use the exact physical-reset instructions for the model.
How long should I hold the physical Reset button?
There is no universal hold time or button location. Roku describes about 10 seconds in one unlinked-mode procedure but warns that holding too long can enter Recovery Mode. Follow the instructions for the exact TV model.

Why do my TCL Roku TV picture settings keep changing back?
TCL lists reverting picture settings as a Store Mode symptom on TCL Roku TVs and recommends a factory reset when the mode cannot be changed or the TV continues acting like a store display. Other brands may use different guidance.
Do I have to buy a replacement remote?
No. A compatible replacement remote is optional because the Roku mobile app may control the reset menus when the TV is reachable on the same network. If you buy a remote, verify compatibility with the exact TV model.
What if I accidentally choose the store option again?
Repeat the complete factory reset and watch Guided Setup carefully. Select Set up for home use when the wizard asks whether the television is for a household or a store demonstration.
How do I know whether the reset finished?
A successful reset returns the television to a factory-new startup state and launches Guided Setup. If the TV remains on an unfamiliar recovery or error screen, stop trying random button combinations and use model-specific recovery instructions or contact support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWill I need to sign in to streaming apps again?
Yes. The reset removes installed apps and their local account information. After linking the TV to your Roku account, reinstall the channels you want and authenticate each streaming service separately.
The Bottom Line
To remove Store/demo mode from a Roku TV, choose Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Factory reset > Factory reset everything. After the restart, select Set up for home use in Guided Setup. Expect to reconnect Wi-Fi, relink the Roku account, reinstall apps, and restore personal settings. If menus are unavailable, use Roku’s model-specific physical-reset instructions rather than a universal button-hold recipe.
