Set player_damage to false in the server’s server_config.sii, save the file while the server is stopped, and restart the server. On a hosted service, the same setting may appear as a Player Damage or Damage between players toggle. Verify the change with a short test convoy.
What the player-damage setting does
Euro Truck Simulator 2 and American Truck Simulator dedicated servers read gameplay options from a SII configuration file. The boolean named player_damage controls whether players can damage one another’s vehicles or cargo during a multiplayer session. Set to true, it permits the normal player-damage behavior. Set to false, it disables that player-to-player damage behavior.
Several third-party references list true as the default, but the exact value in your installation is authoritative. Open the file the running server actually loads instead of assuming the default. A server can also be started through a host panel or container, in which case the panel or deployment environment may write the value for you.
The same configuration file is reported for ETS2 and ATS dedicated servers. A MintServers guide described the file as shared between the two games; its search listing gave a July 2026 publication date that was not independently verified. Treat that as a practical pointer, not as an official SCS compatibility statement, and check the active server directory for your installation.

Before you edit: stop the server and find the active file
Stop the process first
Use the host control panel’s Stop action, or stop the dedicated-server process through the process manager you normally use. Do not edit while the server is writing its configuration. A running process can overwrite your change when it shuts down, leaving player_damage set to its former value.
Locate server_config.sii
The SCS Modding Wiki places the file in the server or game home folder. Host guides give locations such as .local/share/Euro Truck Simulator 2/ on Linux and the game’s Documents or local-share folder on other systems. The exact path depends on the operating system, installation method, account running the server, and hosting provider.

If you see more than one server_config.sii, do not guess. Identify which directory the launch configuration uses, then edit that copy. Keeping a dated backup before changing the file gives you a quick recovery path if another setting is altered accidentally.

Change player_damage in the configuration file
- Stop the server. Wait until the panel reports it as stopped or the dedicated-server process has exited.
- Open the active
server_config.sii. Use a plain-text editor or the host’s file editor. Avoid a word processor that can add formatting. - Find the
player_damageentry. Search for the parameter name rather than scrolling through unrelated settings. - Replace only its value. The resulting line should be:
player_damage: false - Save the file without changing its name or extension. Keep the parameter inside the existing server configuration structure. Do not add quotation marks around
false. - Start the server again. Use the normal start action or launch procedure for that instance.
- Run a controlled test. Join with two players, make a low-speed contact in a safe area, and check whether either vehicle or its cargo receives damage. Test only after the restart has completed.
The setting is a server-side option. Every player does not need to edit a local game file, and changing a client’s profile does not replace the value used by the dedicated server.
Using a hosted control panel instead of manual editing
Many providers expose the same SII value as a form control. The label is not uniform, so look under server settings, gameplay, or basic settings for wording related to player damage or damage between players.
Player Damage toggle
Shockbyte describes a Player Damage option in the server settings file. Set it to disabled, apply or save the configuration, and restart the instance. Afterward, inspect the generated file if the panel provides a file manager; it should contain player_damage: false.

Damage between players
G-Portal lists Damage between players under Basic Settings. Disable that control, save the settings, and restart. A panel can write a different copy of the file than the one you opened through FTP or a mounted volume, so the post-save file check is useful when both interfaces are available.
When the panel and file disagree
Treat the provider’s active configuration as the source of truth. Stop the server, change the value through one interface, save, and then use the other interface only to verify it. Avoid alternating between a panel toggle and a manual edit while the server is running; the last writer may restore the previous value.
Related settings that affect what players experience
Traffic may need to be disabled
G-Portal notes that traffic must also be disabled when player damage is disabled. This is a provider-specific instruction about the interaction between the two settings, not a replacement for changing player_damage. If your host exposes a traffic option, review its documented dependency and disable traffic when required. Otherwise, players may still encounter traffic-related collisions even though player-to-player damage is off.

Menu collisions and ghosting
Disabling damage does not automatically prevent every accidental contact while navigating menus or spawning. BisectHosting suggests using in-menu ghosting to reduce navigation accidents. The control’s exact name and availability depend on the server build or panel. Treat ghosting as a separate collision-management option; it does not change the player_damage line.

hide_colliding
A third-party reference lists hide_colliding with a default of true and associates it with hiding colliding vehicles after teleports. The wording and semantics differ between references, and no official SCS parameter table for the current version was captured. Do not change this value merely because you want player damage disabled. If you investigate it, record the original value and test on a private session before applying it to a public server.
Container environment variable
One Docker convoy image documents ETS_SERVER_PLAYER_DAMAGE with a default of true. If your deployment uses that image or a similar image, inspect the container documentation and environment configuration. A value supplied at container startup can regenerate the SII setting. Set the variable to false only according to that image’s documented configuration method, recreate or restart the container as required by the image, and then confirm the resulting server_config.sii line.

How to verify that damage is really disabled
Check the file after restart
After the server starts, reopen the active configuration file if your host permits it. Confirm that the line still reads player_damage: false. If it has changed back to true, the edit was made in the wrong directory, a panel or container rewrote the file, or the server was not fully stopped before editing.
Test with two players
- Join the same server with two accounts or coordinate with another player.
- Use a low-speed, controlled contact in an area where a collision will not create a safety problem.
- Check both trucks and any cargo after the contact.
- Repeat once after reconnecting, so you know the result was produced by the restarted server rather than an old session.
The expected result is that players cannot damage each other’s vehicles or cargo through the tested player collision. This test does not prove that traffic, environmental hazards, or every other collision type is harmless; those behaviors are controlled separately.

Troubleshooting when the setting does not take effect

What this change does not establish
No official SCS parameter table for player_damage in the current game version was available in the captured material. The practical procedure above is consistent across multiple host guides, but exact panel labels, file locations, and container behavior can vary. Confirm the value in your own server file and test the behavior after every game, image, or hosting-platform update.
The available references also do not provide an official definition of every collision-related option. In particular, the precise behavior of hide_colliding is not confirmed by an official source. Keep that option separate from the well-established edit to player_damage, and change it only when you have a documented reason and a test plan.
Operational checklist
- Identify whether the instance is ETS2 or ATS and locate the server home directory.
- Stop the dedicated server before touching its configuration.
- Back up the active
server_config.sii. - Set exactly
player_damage: false. - Save the original filename and plain-text format.
- If using a host panel, save its Player Damage or Damage between players control.
- If using Docker, inspect
ETS_SERVER_PLAYER_DAMAGEand its documented default. - Review the traffic setting because some providers require traffic to be disabled as well.
- Restart the server and confirm the value remains
false. - Test with two players, then reconnect and test again.
Once the active server has retained player_damage: false through a restart and the convoy test shows no player-to-player vehicle or cargo damage, the change is complete.
