Chrome does not have one universal “turn off AI” switch. Gemini in Chrome, on-device AI models, the AI Mode button, saved AI Mode activity, and administrator-controlled integrations each have separate controls. Use the setting that matches what you want to change: hide an icon, revoke a permission, delete local model files, remove account history, or ask an administrator to change a managed policy.
The right path also depends on your platform. The controls documented for desktop Chrome are not identical to Android’s, and Gemini in Chrome is still rolling out. If a menu is missing, your Chrome version, account eligibility, platform, region, or organization policy may determine what appears.
Which Chrome AI control do you need?
“Disable AI in Chrome” can mean several different things. The controls below affect different parts of Chrome and Google Search, so changing one does not automatically change the others.

Availability can differ by Chrome version, account eligibility, rollout status, platform, and administrator policy. A setting described below may not appear for every account or device.

Is there a way to uninstall Gemini from Chrome?
Google’s documented controls are settings, permissions, model management, visibility preferences, history tools, and administrator policies—not a separate Gemini uninstaller. You can turn off the places where Gemini is shown, remove permissions, and delete Chrome’s local generative-AI model files, but those actions have different scopes. Hiding an icon does not prove that a model was deleted, and deleting a local model does not disable cloud-based services or AI features on Google Search.
For that reason, treat “remove Gemini” as a checklist. Decide whether you want to stop access to the microphone or tab, remove local files, hide an address-bar shortcut, or delete saved activity. Then use the matching control instead of expecting one setting to perform all four jobs.
How do I turn off AI in Chrome on a computer?
On a personal Windows, Mac, Linux, or Chromebook computer, start with Settings > AI innovations. Work through the individual controls rather than looking for a single master switch.

Turn off Gemini’s visible integrations
- Open Chrome’s three-dot menu and choose Settings.
- Open AI innovations, then select Gemini in Chrome.
- Under Preferences, turn off the options that show Gemini in the browser.
- If enabled on your computer, turn off the options that show Gemini in the Mac menu bar or the Windows system tray.
These switches control where Gemini is presented. They reduce or remove the associated interface entry points, but they should not be described as removing every AI model or every AI service that Chrome or Google Search can use. If you only dislike the icon or entry point, this may be all you need; if your concern is data access or local storage, continue with the permissions and On-device AI sections.
Remove Gemini’s permissions
On the same Gemini in Chrome page, review the Permissions section and switch off capabilities you do not want:
- Precise location: when disabled, Gemini cannot use precise location and can only derive an estimated location from your IP address.
- Microphone: prevents the Gemini integration from using the microphone through this permission.
- Share the current tab by default: stops automatic sharing of the tab you are viewing.
- Let Gemini browse for you: disables that browsing capability where the control is available.
Permission changes limit what Gemini can access; they do not delete local model files or erase previously saved activity. Gemini in Chrome is rolling out, so some users will not yet have all of these controls. Turning off one permission also does not turn off the others: for example, disabling precise location does not by itself disable microphone access or tab sharing.
How do I remove Gemini’s local AI models?
If your goal is to remove generative-AI model files stored by Chrome on the device, use the dedicated on-device setting.

- Open Chrome’s menu and choose Settings.
- Open AI innovations.
- Switch On-device AI off.
- Confirm the change if Chrome asks you to do so.
Google documents that turning this setting off deletes Chrome’s on-device generative-AI model files, stops features that depend on those models, and prevents Chrome from downloading the models again while the setting remains off.
Google describes this setting as the only supported method for managing generative-AI models in Chrome. Do not hunt for model files and delete them manually: manual deletion is not recommended and may not prevent future downloads controlled by the setting. Conversely, hiding Gemini’s interface does not delete these files, and turning off on-device models does not disable cloud-based AI features.
What stops working when On-device AI is off?
Only features that rely on Chrome’s on-device generative-AI models stop working. The setting does not promise to disable AI processing performed by an online service, AI features on Google Search’s website, or administrator-enabled integrations. If a feature disappears after you switch the setting off, that is expected; Chrome cannot use a local model that it has removed.
Leave the setting off if preventing a redownload is important. Re-enabling it allows Chrome to manage the models again, so the off state is the control that governs both deletion and whether Chrome may download them in the future.
How do I disable AI Mode in Chrome?
To remove the AI Mode shortcut from Chrome’s address bar, use the address bar’s own context menu:
- Right-click the Chrome address bar.
- Find Always show AI Mode.
- Turn that option off.
Chrome also removes the Add tabs and more control associated with that address-bar presentation. This is a visibility preference, not a global AI shutdown. AI Mode may still be available when you visit Google Search on the web, and this step does not delete earlier AI Mode activity.
If your goal is simply to avoid accidentally selecting the shortcut, hiding it is appropriate. If your goal is to stop Google Search from offering AI Mode or to remove previous prompts, use the separate web and history controls described below; the address-bar menu does not govern those areas.

How do I delete my AI Mode history?
Hiding the address-bar control and deleting saved activity are separate operations. To remove entries shown in Chrome’s AI Mode history:
- Open a New Tab page.
- Open AI Mode history.
- Delete an individual entry, or choose the option to delete all AI Mode history.
Google cautions that a deleted search can continue to appear in My Activity temporarily. Those records are automatically deleted there within 24 hours, or you can remove them manually in My Activity. Therefore, an entry that remains immediately after deletion is not necessarily evidence that the New Tab history control failed.
Delete the related Search history record too
For a specific search, Google says you must also delete it from Search history to remove it completely. A single interaction can create two Search history entries when you begin with an AI Overview and then continue in AI Mode. If one entry remains after deleting AI Mode history, check Search history and My Activity separately rather than assuming the first deletion failed. Remove both Search history entries when the same interaction produced an AI Overview-to-AI Mode transition.
History deletion is an account-record task, not a browser-interface task. It does not hide the AI Mode shortcut, change Gemini permissions, or delete local model files. Complete those actions independently if privacy or cleanup requires more than one layer.
How do I remove every visible Gemini entry without deleting anything?
There is no documented single action that removes every Gemini, AI Mode, and on-device AI component at once. On a personal computer, use this combination when you want the least visible AI presence without changing account history:

- In Settings > AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome, turn off the browser, Mac menu-bar, and Windows system-tray presentation options that you see.
- On the same page, disable permissions such as precise location, microphone, default current-tab sharing, and Let Gemini browse for you if you do not want those capabilities.
- In Settings > AI innovations, turn off On-device AI if you also want Chrome to delete its local generative-AI model files.
- Right-click the address bar and turn off Always show AI Mode if you want the address-bar shortcut hidden.
- Delete AI Mode history, then check My Activity and Search history if you want associated records removed.
Each step has a different scope. Completing the list does not guarantee that AI features on the web, in another Google app, or under an organization’s policy will disappear. It does, however, address the main user-controlled layers: presentation, permissions, local storage, address-bar visibility, and account history.
What if Chrome says the setting is unavailable?
The feature has not reached your account
Gemini in Chrome and related controls are rolling out. A missing menu can therefore mean that your account, region, platform, or Chrome release is not eligible yet. Update Chrome through its normal built-in update process and check the AI innovations page again, but do not assume that an absent option means the feature is disabled everywhere. A control can also be available on desktop while a comparable Android control is absent, or the reverse.

Your organization manages Chrome
On a work or school computer, an administrator can control Gemini integrations, AI Mode integrations, and content sharing with Chrome Enterprise policies. A policy may make a setting unavailable or restore an integration after a local change. In that situation, ask the organization’s Chrome administrator to change the policy; repeatedly changing local preferences will not override an enforced setting.
The AI Mode integrations policy applies only when Chrome is configured with Google as the default search engine. The Chrome content-sharing policy does not affect AI Mode used on the web, so that policy should not be treated as a universal web-search control. This distinction matters when a managed device still shows AI Mode on a website even after an administrator changes Chrome’s integration policy.
You switched off On-device AI but still see AI elsewhere
That result is consistent with the setting’s scope. On-device AI controls local model files and dependent features. It does not switch off online AI services, AI Mode on Google Search, or every Gemini integration. Use the Gemini, address-bar, and history controls separately for those areas.
You deleted history but an entry remains
Check all three locations: AI Mode history on the New Tab page, My Activity, and Search history. My Activity may take up to 24 hours to auto-delete a deleted search. An AI Overview-to-AI Mode interaction can also produce two Search history entries, so remove both when the goal is to erase that specific search.
How do I turn off “Let Gemini browse for you” on Android?
Android has a separate control documented for Gemini’s auto-browse capability:
- Open Chrome on Android.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Gemini in Chrome.
- Turn off Let Gemini browse for you.
Auto-browse is described as experimental. If a task is already running, Chrome provides a way to stop it. Android’s controls can differ from desktop Chrome, so do not use the desktop path as evidence that the same switch exists on a phone. The Android switch addresses this browsing capability specifically; it does not by itself delete desktop model files, hide the desktop address-bar control, or erase account history.

A practical verification checklist
- Open Settings > AI innovations and verify the Gemini presentation and permission switches you intended to change.
- Confirm that On-device AI is off if deleting local model files was part of your goal.
- Right-click the address bar and verify that Always show AI Mode is off if you wanted the shortcut hidden.
- Review AI Mode history on a New Tab page.
- Check My Activity and Search history when the purpose is account-record deletion rather than merely hiding an icon.
- On a work or school computer, confirm whether an administrator controls the relevant integration.
- On Android, check Settings > Gemini in Chrome independently; desktop settings do not establish the phone’s available controls.
After checking, test the exact behavior you wanted to change. For example, confirm that the address-bar shortcut is hidden, that a microphone or tab-sharing permission is off, or that a history item is absent from each relevant list. Seeing AI on a Google Search page after disabling On-device AI is not a contradiction; it is a different service and scope.

The important distinction is scope: interface visibility, permissions, local model storage, account history, and organization policy are different layers. Choose and verify each layer separately instead of expecting one switch to remove all AI behavior from Chrome.
