In Teams desktop, select Settings and more (the ellipsis), choose Settings > Devices, find Noise suppression, and switch it off. You can also change it while a call is running: open More actions > Audio settings, or use the arrow beside the microphone and select More audio settings, then turn Noise suppression off. Microsoft says the selected setting carries over to your next meeting or call.

Turn off noise suppression before a meeting

These instructions apply to the Teams desktop client. Noise suppression is enabled by default, so you must change the setting if you want Teams to pass more of your microphone’s original sound through.

  1. Open Teams and select Settings and more, the three-dot button near your profile picture.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Open Devices.
  4. Scroll to Noise suppression.
  5. Switch the toggle to Off.

The change is stored as your Teams audio preference. Microsoft says it carries over to the next meeting or call, so you normally do not need to repeat these steps for every appointment.

If the menu looks different

Teams menu names can vary with client version, account type, and organization policy. Use the Settings search box for noise suppression or audio if you do not immediately see Devices. If the setting does not appear at all, your organization may control it through an administrator policy; the troubleshooting section below explains what to do next.

Turn it off during a meeting or call

You can change processing without leaving the meeting. The control is available from the meeting audio controls, although some options can be hidden by meeting or IT-administrator policy.

  1. In the meeting controls, select More actions (the three dots).
  2. Select Audio settings.
  3. Locate Noise suppression and switch it to Off.

There is a second route in the same meeting:

  1. Select the dropdown arrow next to the microphone button.
  2. Choose More audio settings.
  3. Find Noise suppression and turn it off.

Meeting audio changes take effect immediately. Speak a short test sentence after changing the toggle so you can confirm that the sound reaching other participants is the one you intended.

What the available audio choices mean

Several Teams controls can sound similar but perform different jobs. Choosing the right one matters if you are trying to preserve room sound, include another person’s voice, or share music.

Choice Function When it makes sense
Noise suppression: Off Stops this Teams processing control from filtering microphone audio. A quiet room, a high-fidelity microphone, music or instrument sound, or any situation in which natural microphone detail is more important than removing background noise.
Background noise only Keeps background-noise filtering but does not restrict the signal to the enrolled user’s voice. Voice isolation is active and you still want nearby voices or other room sound to remain audible.
Voice isolation Uses a voice profile to identify the enrolled speaker and filters background noise and other speakers. A meeting in which only one enrolled person should be heard clearly.
High fidelity music mode Optimizes shared audio for music and can disable noise suppression and other audio effects. Sharing music rather than holding an ordinary speech call.

Turning off general noise suppression is not the same as enabling Voice isolation or High fidelity music mode. Each is a separate control with a different purpose.

When Voice isolation is causing the filtering

Voice isolation uses a voice profile to keep your voice and remove background noise plus other speakers. If you enabled it, changing only a general expectation about noise suppression may not produce the result you want.

Change Voice isolation in the meeting

  1. Open the dropdown arrow beside the microphone in the meeting controls.
  2. Choose Background noise only if you want filtering to remain but need nearby voices to be heard.
  3. Alternatively, turn the Noise suppression toggle off if you want Teams to stop that filtering control.

A voice profile takes about 30 seconds to create according to Microsoft’s guidance. That is an approximate profile-creation time, not a guarantee for the complete setup or approval process.

If Recognition is missing

Voice isolation can depend on an available voice profile and organization settings. If Recognition is missing from your Teams settings, Microsoft advises contacting your IT administrator. Do not assume that reinstalling the client will restore an option that your organization has disabled.

Choosing the right setting for your microphone and room

Noise suppression is useful when a microphone is picking up fans, keyboard clicks, traffic, or conversation that should not reach a meeting. It can also remove sound you deliberately want people to hear. In a quiet environment, Microsoft specifically recommends turning noise suppression off for high-fidelity microphones, such as those used in a quiet studio.

  • Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring
  • Quiet studio or treated room: Start with Noise suppression Off so the microphone can retain its full character.
  • Busy home office: Keep suppression enabled unless other participants need to hear room ambience or a second speaker.
  • Interview with two people at one microphone: Use Background noise only when Voice isolation would remove the other person.
  • Instrument or music demonstration: Use the dedicated music-sharing controls described below rather than relying on speech-oriented processing.

Turning the toggle off does not improve a microphone that is clipping, positioned too far away, or overloaded by room echo. Those are separate acoustic or hardware problems; adjust microphone placement and input level as needed.

High fidelity music mode is a separate control

Teams has a High fidelity music mode for sharing music. Microsoft describes it as intended for music content, not ordinary speech. When network bandwidth allows, Microsoft documents a 32 kHz sampling rate at 128 kbps. In lower-bandwidth conditions, the bitrate can fall to 48 kbps.

The mode may turn off noise suppression and other audio effects because those effects can damage musical detail. It is unavailable in live events and when Spatial audio is enabled. Use it only when the meeting needs shared music; Microsoft recommends turning it off for normal speech calls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why this mode does not replace the Noise suppression toggle

The general Noise suppression setting controls microphone filtering for calls. High fidelity mode changes the way Teams handles shared music and may alter several effects at once. If your goal is simply to stop microphone filtering, use the dedicated Noise suppression switch under Devices or Audio settings.

Teams mobile: what you can and cannot assume

Microsoft documents noise-suppression controls for Teams on desktop and mobile, but the specific iOS instructions list Auto, Low, and High. They do not document an Off choice on that screen.

For that reason, do not assume the desktop toggle appears on every iPhone or iPad version. Open the mobile app’s audio or meeting settings and check the labels actually provided by your client. If only Auto, Low, and High are available, select the least aggressive option that meets your needs rather than expecting an undocumented Off state. Android and other mobile builds can also present different controls as Microsoft updates the app.

Why the Off option may be unavailable

Administrator or meeting policy

Some audio settings are controlled by the meeting organizer or your organization’s IT administrator. A disabled, missing, or locked control can therefore be intentional. Ask your administrator whether a Teams policy restricts noise suppression, Voice isolation, Recognition, or music mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Different client or account experience

Teams can expose different labels in the desktop, web, and mobile clients. Confirm that you are using the current desktop application if you are following the Settings > Devices path. If your interface differs, search Teams settings for noise suppression and check the microphone dropdown during a live call.

Voice isolation remains active

If other speakers are still being removed after you change a setting, inspect the microphone dropdown for Voice isolation. Select Background noise only or turn the Noise suppression toggle off there. Voice isolation has its own behavior and should not be treated as a synonym for the standard suppression switch.

Audio changes are not audible

Ask a participant to listen while you test. Confirm that Teams is using the intended microphone under Settings > Devices, and check the operating system’s input selection and mute state. If another application is applying its own noise gate or digital signal processing, Teams cannot remove that processing by switching its own toggle off.

A practical decision guide

  1. Need the cleanest speech in a noisy room? Leave Noise suppression enabled and consider whether Voice isolation is appropriate.
  2. Need another person or room sound to remain audible? Avoid Voice isolation; use Background noise only or turn Noise suppression off.
  3. Using a high-fidelity microphone in a quiet room? Turn Noise suppression off, following Microsoft’s recommendation for low-noise environments.
  4. Sharing music? Use High fidelity music mode where it is available, remembering that it is optimized for music, not speech, and is unavailable in live events and with Spatial audio.
  5. Cannot find the control? Search Teams settings, check the microphone dropdown in a meeting, and then contact your IT administrator if policy restrictions appear to be involved.

What changes after you switch it off

With Noise suppression off, Teams no longer applies that particular filtering control to your microphone signal. Room sounds, keyboard noise, multiple speakers, and musical detail may all be transmitted more naturally. The trade-off is that unwanted noise is no longer reduced by this setting, so microphone placement and the acoustic environment become more important.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The preference is persistent across the next meeting or call according to Microsoft. If you switch it off for a one-time recording or music demonstration, check the setting afterward and restore your normal choice before a noisy meeting.
