Set the server’s name_tags option to false. On most managed hosts, turn off the Name Tags control in the server panel, save, and restart. If the panel does not expose that control, stop the server, change name_tags: true to name_tags: false in server_config.sii, save the file, and restart. Docker-based convoy servers can use ETS_SERVER_NAME_TAGS=false.
What the name_tags setting does
Euro Truck Simulator 2 (ETS2) and American Truck Simulator (ATS) dedicated servers expose a Boolean setting named name_tags. A value of true enables the in-game name-tag display; a value of false disables it. The same setting is used for either game when the host provides the standard Truck Simulator server configuration.
This is a server-side option. Changing a local graphics or gameplay setting on your computer does not disable tags for a dedicated session. The server must load the false value before players join, which is why stopping the process and restarting it after the change is important.

If you rent a server, start with the panel route. It avoids syntax mistakes and normally writes the correct configuration file for you. Use the file route when the setting is hidden, when you operate the server yourself, or when a panel’s startup variables are the only available controls.

Method 1: Disable Name Tags in a hosting control panel
Panel names differ by provider and may not match older tutorials. The sequence is generally the same: stop the server, change the value, save, and start it again.
Generic panel procedure
- Sign in to the control panel for the ETS2 or ATS instance.
- Stop the server and wait until the panel reports that the process is offline. Editing while it is running can be overwritten when the process exits.
- Open the server’s configuration area. Depending on the host, this may be called Config Files, Basic Settings, Startup, or Truck Simulator server settings.
- Locate Name Tags. Change the control from Enabled or
trueto Disabled orfalse. - Save or apply the setting. Wait for a success message before leaving the page.
- Start or restart the server. A restart is required for the dedicated process to read the new value.
- Join with a test account and confirm that the floating name display is gone near other players.
Examples of panel labels
- A Shockbyte guide describes stopping the server, opening its config-files section, selecting the Truck Simulator server settings file, setting the Name Tags dropdown to Disabled, saving, and restarting. That guide notes that it was written for an older version of the control panel, so your navigation may be different.
- G-Portal’s wiki places a Name Tags slider under Basic Settings. Switch the slider off, save if the panel presents a separate save button, and restart.
- Sparked Host documents the option under the Startup tab. Its example shows the value defaulting to
true; replace it withfalseand restart.
These examples illustrate locations, not a universal interface. Hosting dashboards change their labels and layout, and no particular menu wording is guaranteed for a 2026 account. If you cannot find the control, search the panel for name_tags, Name Tags, or Truck Simulator settings before editing files.

name_tags: falseSome installations currently contain name_tags: true. Change only the Boolean value after the colon; keep the key spelling, colon, and file format intact.
Safe edit procedure
- Stop the ETS2 or ATS server and verify that it is fully offline.
- Make a backup copy of
server_config.sii. Give the copy a date or other clear identifier so you can restore the previous configuration. - Open the server’s configuration-file browser, SFTP location, or local directory. The exact location depends on the host and installation method. One guide returned in hosting documentation uses
local > share > Euro Truck Simulator 2 > server_config.sii; treat that as an example rather than a universal path. - Open
server_config.siiin a plain-text editor, not a word processor. - Search for
name_tags. If the line readsname_tags: true, change it toname_tags: false. If it already readsfalse, the server configuration is already set to hide tags. - Save the file without changing its filename or extension. If your editor offers an encoding choice, retain the existing encoding.
- Start the server. If your host has a separate restart command, use restart rather than only reloading a web page.
- Connect and test with another player. A client that was connected before the restart may need to leave and rejoin to receive the new server state.
When the line is missing
Do not invent a second spelling such as nameTags or add unrelated keys. First confirm that you opened the active server’s server_config.sii, rather than a backup, a different game instance, or a client profile. If the active file genuinely has no name_tags entry, use the host’s current documentation or support channel for the correct schema; the available provider material establishes the value but not a universal rule for creating a missing key.
Method 3: Docker-based convoy servers
The LsHallo ets2-dedicated-convoy-server README lists an environment variable named ETS_SERVER_NAME_TAGS. Set it to the literal value false in the container’s environment:

ETS_SERVER_NAME_TAGS=falseFor a Compose deployment, place the variable in the service’s environment section or the environment file used by that service. For a direct docker run deployment, pass it as an environment variable in the command used to create the container. After changing the environment, restart or recreate the container so the process starts with the new value. The exact Compose service name, image tag, and command are deployment-specific and are not required for the setting itself.
How to verify that tags are actually disabled
Use a controlled check rather than relying on the panel’s saved state:
- Confirm the panel, file, or container environment shows
false. - Confirm the server process was stopped and started after the edit. A browser refresh of the panel is not a server restart.
- Have a second player join, or connect from a second account if you are testing alone.
- Move close enough to another truck for a name tag to be visible under normal settings.
- Leave and rejoin if a client was connected during the change.
- If the tag still appears, stop the server and inspect the active configuration again; another instance or an automatically generated file may be the one being loaded.
Troubleshooting when the setting does not stick

ETS2 and ATS considerations
The researched setting applies to both Truck Simulator titles when they are running the dedicated-server configuration that contains name_tags. The key name and false value do not change between ETS2 and ATS. What can change is the surrounding path, panel organization, container image, or service definition, so use the file and menu belonging to the specific game instance you operate.

Do not copy an ETS2 path blindly into an ATS installation. The documented example path points to an ETS2 directory, while the evidence does not establish a universal ATS directory name. On a host-managed server, the panel’s file browser is safer than guessing a local path.

Permissions and operational limits
You need server-owner or administrator access
Only the server owner or an administrator with configuration access can change a dedicated server’s name_tags value. If you are joining someone else’s public server, the setting is controlled by that server’s operator; a client-side preference cannot override it.
Plan for a brief interruption
Stopping and restarting disconnects current players. Announce the maintenance window if other people are using the server, stop cleanly, make the change, and verify the result before inviting players back. Keeping a backup of the original file gives you a quick rollback if the host’s panel or server version rejects the edit.

Expect interface drift
Provider guides cover different panel generations and are not a guarantee of current labels. Shockbyte explicitly identifies its instructions as written for an older control panel, and the other provider examples use different locations for the same value. Treat the option name and Boolean value as the stable part; treat menu wording as host-specific.

What this setting does not establish
The available server-setting documentation identifies the floating name-tag option, but it does not define how every other player identifier is rendered. Scoreboard entries, chat names, administrative labels, convoy indicators, and overlays may be controlled elsewhere by the game or by a separate modification. If your goal is to remove one of those elements rather than the server’s name tag, changing name_tags may not affect it.

Does changing name_tags require changing every player’s game settings?
No. It is a dedicated-server setting. Once the server restarts with name_tags: false, the server supplies that state to connected clients; players do not need to edit local configuration files.
Can I test the change without another person online?
You can check the server setting and reconnect, but a second player or second account provides the clearest visual confirmation because the feature concerns how another player’s tag is displayed.
Is false case-sensitive?
Use the exact lowercase form shown by the documented configuration, name_tags: false. Do not substitute quoted text, a number, or a differently spelled key.
Will a panel update permanently preserve the setting?
Not necessarily. A host may regenerate configuration files or rename controls after a panel or server update. After maintenance, verify the active value and perform a short reconnect test.
