Short answer: turn off the assistant’s memory or activity setting, then separately delete stored memories and old conversations if you want them removed. For a single private conversation, use ChatGPT Temporary Chat, Claude Incognito, or Gemini with Keep Activity turned off (or its temporary-chat option where available). These modes reduce history and personalization, but they do not guarantee zero retention: providers may keep limited data for safety, service operation, feedback, compliance, or administrator-required retention.
Menu names and availability differ by plan, region, age, device, and whether an employer or school manages the account. Use the labels actually shown in your account.
What you need to turn off
“Memory,” “personalization,” “chat history,” and “model improvement” are separate controls. Disabling one does not automatically disable the others, and deleting a conversation does not necessarily delete a fact the assistant saved from it.
- Saved memory: durable facts or preferences the assistant stores for later conversations.
- Past-chat reference: the ability to search or infer information from earlier conversations without saving it as a specific memory.
- Chat history or activity: the account record of conversations, which may be used to display history, provide search, or administer the service.
- Personalization and connected apps: account, app, file, or service data used to tailor responses.
- Model-improvement use: whether your conversations are eligible to help improve models. This is distinct from keeping a history that only you can see.
- One-off private mode: a per-conversation setting designed not to add the conversation to ordinary memory or history.
Before changing anything, decide whether you want to stop future use, erase existing data, or both. The steps below treat those as separate jobs. If you share an account with a family member or use multiple devices, make the change at the account level and verify it on each app where the service is signed in.

ChatGPT: disable Memory, remove remembered details, and use Temporary Chat
Turn off memory and references to past chats
- Open ChatGPT and select your profile menu.
- Choose Settings, then Personalization.
- Open Memory. Depending on your account, you may see Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, Memory summary, Manage, or Saved memories.
- Turn off every memory or reference switch you do not want. If both saved-memory and chat-history controls are present, disable both for the least personalization.
Turning off Memory does not delete past chats. If you turn off Reference chat history, information remembered from past chats is scheduled for deletion from OpenAI systems within 30 days; the original conversations remain until you delete them separately.
Some accounts expose a summary or management view rather than identical switches. Treat a summary as an inventory to review, not as proof that the underlying chats have been erased. A workspace administrator can also limit which controls appear.
Delete saved memories
In Settings > Personalization > Memory, open Manage or Saved memories and remove individual entries, or use the available control to clear them. For complete removal of a remembered detail, OpenAI says to delete both the saved memory and the conversation where you first shared it. Also remove copies in other sources, such as Library files or connected apps, if they contain the same detail.

Deletion and memory updates can take time to propagate. OpenAI may retain logs of deleted saved memories for up to 30 days for safety and debugging, so removal is not necessarily instantaneous or absolute. If the assistant still mentions a detail after deletion, check for another chat, uploaded file, custom instruction, or connected service containing it.
Delete the conversations that contain the information
Deleting a saved memory does not delete the chat that supplied it. Delete individual conversations from the chat list, or use the account’s history-management option if one is offered. If a sensitive fact appears in several chats, remove each relevant conversation and any uploaded or connected copy. Deleting a chat also does not automatically remove a duplicate stored in a third-party integration.
Use Temporary Chat for a single conversation
- Start a new conversation.
- Select Temporary Chat using the option shown near the composer or in the model/chat controls.
- Check that the temporary indicator is visible before sending sensitive content.
OpenAI describes Temporary chats as conversations that do not appear in history, do not create memories, and do not help improve models. Limited safety and security processing can still occur in rare, high-risk situations, and retention policies may apply. Temporary Chat is therefore a useful one-off mode, not a guarantee that no technical or legal record can exist.
Stop account-wide model-improvement use
- Open Settings.
- Choose Data Controls.
- Turn off the model-improvement setting shown for your account.
This control addresses model-improvement eligibility; it does not by itself erase existing chats, saved memories, or files. It is worth checking separately even if you normally keep history for convenience.

Claude: pause or reset memory, disable it for one chat, or use Incognito
Pause memory without deleting existing memories
- Open Claude’s account menu.
- Choose Settings, then Memory.
- Select Pause memory.
Pause stops Claude from using memory or creating new memories while retaining the memories already stored. This is useful when you want a temporary stop without an irreversible deletion. Resume only after checking that the setting has changed back to the status you intend.
Reset all Claude memories
- Go to Settings > Memory.
- Select Reset memory.
- Confirm the warning.
Reset permanently deletes all memories, including project memories, and cannot be undone. Resetting memory does not automatically delete your conversation history. If a project contains sensitive files or instructions, review and remove those separately.

Disable memory for one conversation while keeping the chat
- Start a new chat and, before sending the first message, open the + menu.
- Turn off Memory.
- Send the message after the setting is visibly disabled.
Claude will not use or add memory for that chat. The conversation still remains in history and can be found through past-chat search from other conversations, so this is not a no-history mode. Turning the switch off after the first message may not change what has already been processed, which is why the control should be set before you type.
Use Incognito for a no-history conversation
- Start a chat outside a project.
- Click the ghost icon to enable Incognito.
- Confirm the Incognito indicator before sharing information.
Anthropic says Incognito chats are not saved to Claude’s memory or chat history. They are retained for 30 days for safety, or longer when an organization’s retention policy requires it, and they are included in the Enterprise Compliance API. Incognito therefore limits ordinary account history; it is not a promise of immediate physical deletion from every system.

A chat started inside a project may not offer the same Incognito control, so start outside the project when that mode is required.
Delete memories separately from conversations
Deleting or allowing a conversation to expire does not automatically remove memory entries generated from it. Open Settings > Memory and delete those entries separately. If your account belongs to an organization, administrator retention and compliance settings can override or extend ordinary user controls.
Gemini: turn off Keep Activity, delete activity, and manage personalization
Turn off Gemini Apps Activity
- On the Gemini web app, open Settings and help.
- Choose Activity.
- Click the On control.
- Choose Turn off or Turn off and delete activity.
With Keep Activity off, future chats do not appear in Gemini Apps Activity and are not used to train Google’s AI models unless you submit feedback. The two choices differ in whether existing activity is deleted as part of the change. If you choose only Turn off, return to the activity page and delete older prompts separately.
Google says conversations made with Keep Activity off can still be retained with your account for up to 72 hours so Gemini can respond, process feedback, and protect Google, users, and the public. A response may therefore require temporary processing even when long-term activity is disabled.

Delete existing Gemini activity
Open Gemini Apps Activity and delete individual prompts, a date range, or all activity. Deleting Gemini Apps Activity does not delete data held in other Google services, so remove related files, messages, or app data in those services separately if necessary. A deletion in Drive, Gmail, Photos, or a connected app is a separate action from deleting the Gemini prompt that referred to it.
Change automatic deletion
- Open Gemini Apps Activity.
- Find the auto-delete control.
- Choose one of the available periods: 3 months, 18 months, 36 months, or Don’t auto-delete.
- Save the selection and review the confirmation.
Google’s default auto-delete period is 18 months. The setting governs Gemini Apps Activity and does not automatically govern records stored by other Google products. A shorter period reduces routine account history but does not cancel the separate 72-hour processing window for chats made while Keep Activity is off.
Turn off personalization and connected-app access
Manage Personal Intelligence and connected apps separately from Keep Activity. You can use Gemini without connecting apps. Disconnecting an app, or deleting data inside that app, does not delete Gemini Apps Activity; handle both actions when you need both results. If Gemini continues to personalize a response, inspect connected services and account-level personalization rather than assuming the activity switch failed.

Use temporary chats when available
Some Gemini accounts show a temporary-chat option in addition to Keep Activity controls. Use the temporary option before sending a message, and verify the indicator in the conversation. Google still may process those chats to provide responses and protect Google, users, and the public. Sending feedback can transmit additional conversation context for service improvement, so avoid feedback on a sensitive temporary chat unless you understand what will be shared.

Which setting should you use?
You want future replies to stop using personal details
Disable saved memory and past-chat reference in ChatGPT, choose Pause memory in Claude, or turn off Gemini activity and manage Personal Intelligence. Then inspect connected files and apps, because a separate data source can continue supplying the same detail.
You want old remembered details erased
Use ChatGPT’s memory-management controls, Claude’s Reset memory, or delete Gemini Apps Activity. Also delete the originating conversations and duplicated data in files or connected services. A history switch alone is not an eraser. Keep in mind that providers may need time to propagate deletion and may retain limited safety or debugging records.
You need one private work session
Use Temporary Chat, Claude Incognito, or Gemini with Keep Activity off or its temporary-chat option. Confirm the mode before typing, avoid submitting feedback that includes sensitive context, and remember the provider’s stated safety-retention window. Do not paste secrets that would create unacceptable risk even during a private-mode session.
You use a work, school, or managed account
Check with the administrator before assuming a user switch controls retention. Claude explicitly allows longer Incognito retention under organizational policy, and enterprise compliance systems can receive Incognito conversations. Similar administrator, legal-hold, or regional rules may affect other services. A missing switch can be an account-policy limitation rather than a software error.

- Reopen the relevant settings page and confirm each switch shows Off, Paused, or the equivalent status.
- Check both saved-memory and past-chat-reference controls where the service exposes both.
- Delete existing memories separately from chats, and delete chats separately from account activity.
- Review connected apps, uploaded files, and other services for duplicate copies of sensitive information.
- Start a new conversation and verify the Temporary, Incognito, or temporary-chat indicator before sending content.
- Do not treat a blank history list as proof that every backend copy has already been erased; safety, compliance, and processing windows still apply.
- Recheck the labels periodically because providers change menu names and roll out controls by account, platform, region, age, and plan.
- If a setting is unavailable, test the web and mobile interfaces, confirm you are in the intended account, and ask the workspace administrator whether policy hides it.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Confusing “turn off” with “delete”
A disabled switch normally affects future collection or use. It rarely removes old chats or memories. Complete the separate deletion step when erasure is your goal.
Deleting a chat but leaving its memory
Claude explicitly separates conversation deletion from memory deletion, and ChatGPT likewise requires removing the saved memory and the source chat for complete removal of a remembered detail. Check the memory-management screen after deleting a conversation.
Using a memory-off chat as if it were history-free
Claude’s per-chat Memory toggle prevents memory use and creation, but the chat stays in history and remains searchable. Use Incognito for the no-history behavior.
Assuming Keep Activity off means zero retention
Gemini may retain chats for up to 72 hours, and all three providers describe safety, operational, feedback, or organizational reasons for limited processing or retention. Do not send information that must never reach a service.

Forgetting feedback and connected services
Submitting feedback can send additional context to Gemini. Connected apps, Library files, and project data can also preserve the same personal details outside the setting you just changed. Review those sources independently.
Expecting one setting to cover every device
These controls generally follow the account, but the labels and rollout can differ between web, desktop, and mobile clients. After changing a setting, open a fresh session on the device you use most and verify the status rather than relying on an old cached screen.

What should I do if the assistant still recalls a deleted detail?
Look for another saved-memory entry, source conversation, uploaded file, project instruction, connected app, or feedback submission containing the detail. Delete each copy, allow time for propagation, then test in a new conversation. Residual safety or debugging records may not be immediately visible to you.
