Disable LiteNetLib by editing the dedicated server’s serverconfig.xml and setting ServerDisabledNetworkProtocols to LiteNetLib. Stop the server before editing, save the file, then restart it with that same configuration file. This leaves SteamNetworking available.
If you are hosting a normal listen game from the client rather than running a dedicated server, this XML-based control is not exposed in the same way. The procedure below applies to a dedicated-server process.
Quick answer
- Stop the 7 Days to Die dedicated-server process.
- Open the
serverconfig.xmlused by that process. If the launch command includes-configfile=..., edit the file at that path instead of assuming the default file. - Find the networking property and change it to:
<property name="ServerDisabledNetworkProtocols" value="LiteNetLib"/> - Save the XML and restart the server with the same
-configfileargument.
The property is a deny list: naming LiteNetLib disables LiteNetLib; it does not select LiteNetLib. Leaving the value empty enables both supported protocols. To disable both, use LiteNetLib, SteamNetworking.
What ServerDisabledNetworkProtocols controls
ServerDisabledNetworkProtocols contains a comma-separated list of networking protocols that the server must not use. The valid names relevant here are LiteNetLib and SteamNetworking. Because the list is negative, the value you enter describes what to block, not what to activate.

Do not replace the property with a positive selection such as value="SteamNetworking" unless your intention is to disable SteamNetworking. The name “DisabledNetworkProtocols” determines how the value is interpreted.
Before you edit the file
Confirm that you are operating a dedicated server
The setting belongs to the dedicated-server configuration workflow. A listen-hosted local game, in which the player launches a world directly from the game client, does not provide the same server administration file and process. You cannot apply this dedicated-server XML change to a client-only host and expect the client to expose a new protocol switch.

Identify the configuration file the process actually reads
Many installations use a file named serverconfig.xml, but a dedicated server can be started with a custom XML file through the -configfile=... launch option. The file you must edit is the one supplied to the running process. If you edit a similarly named copy in another folder, the server will continue using its original value and appear unchanged after restart.

Make a recoverable change
- Stop the server cleanly and wait for its process to exit before opening the XML for editing.
- Copy the configuration file to a backup location, or at least preserve the original line, so you can restore it quickly.
- Use a plain-text or code editor that preserves XML syntax. Avoid word processors that add formatting characters.
- Change only the protocol property unless you have another planned configuration change.
Step-by-step: disable LiteNetLib only
- Stop the server. Shut down the dedicated-server process through the control panel or console command you normally use. Editing while it is running risks having the process rewrite the file during shutdown or leaving your change unapplied.
- Open the active XML file. Open the default
serverconfig.xml, or the custom file named by the server’s-configfile=...argument. - Search for the key. Find
ServerDisabledNetworkProtocols. The existing line may look like this:<property name="ServerDisabledNetworkProtocols" value="SteamNetworking"/> - Replace only the value. To deny LiteNetLib and leave SteamNetworking available, use:
<property name="ServerDisabledNetworkProtocols" value="LiteNetLib"/>Keep the property name and XML structure intact. Do not add a second copy of the property; duplicate entries can make it unclear which value the server reads.
- Save the file. Check that the editor saved it as XML rather than as a second extension such as
.xml.txt. - Restart with the same configuration argument. If the server was launched with
-configfile=/path/to/custom.xml, start it again with that same argument. Restarting a different instance or omitting the argument can load another file and make the change appear ineffective. - Test a real connection. Have players connect using the platforms and network paths that matter to your server. A successful local test does not prove that an Internet player behind a different router can connect.
How to disable both protocols
If your test specifically requires denying LiteNetLib and SteamNetworking, set the value to the two names separated by a comma:
<property name="ServerDisabledNetworkProtocols" value="LiteNetLib, SteamNetworking"/>This is not an alternative spelling for “prefer SteamNetworking.” It denies both listed protocols. Because both available names are blocked, use this only when you understand what other connection path your installed server version provides. If your goal is simply to stop LiteNetLib, use the single-name value instead.

Choosing between LiteNetLib and SteamNetworking
Disabling a protocol changes how clients reach the server, so the correct choice depends on the network path rather than on the property name alone. The official server guidance specifically notes that dedicated servers should disable SteamNetworking when there is no NAT router between users and the server or when port forwarding is set up correctly. That is a condition-based networking recommendation, not a universal instruction to disable LiteNetLib or SteamNetworking on every installation.

Change one variable at a time. If you alter the XML, firewall rules, port forwarding, and client version simultaneously, you will not know which change affected the result.
Testing the change safely
Use a controlled before-and-after test
- Record the original property value and the server’s current launch command.
- Choose one test client on each platform you need to support.
- With the original value, note whether each client can discover and join the server.
- Stop the server, change only
ServerDisabledNetworkProtocols, and restart with the same XML file. - Repeat the same connection attempts from the same networks.
- Restore the original value if the change does not solve the problem, then test a different hypothesis such as firewall or forwarding.
Verify that the new value was loaded
After restart, confirm that the process is using the edited file, not merely that the file on disk contains the desired text. Review the launch command or service definition for its -configfile path, and check the server’s startup output for configuration or XML errors. If the server starts with a different configuration directory, stop and correct the file path before drawing conclusions about LiteNetLib.

Test from the real network path
A connection from the host machine or from a player on the same local network may bypass the NAT and port-forwarding conditions that caused the original failure. Include at least one client outside the server’s local network when the server is intended for Internet players. Keep the player platform and game version constant while comparing results.

The server behaves exactly as before
- Recheck the spelling and capitalization of
ServerDisabledNetworkProtocols,LiteNetLib, andSteamNetworking. - Confirm that the edited line is inside the active XML file and that the file was saved.
- Verify the process launch command. A custom
-configfile=...argument means the default file may be ignored. - Make sure the server was fully stopped before the edit and restarted afterward.
The server fails to start after editing
- Compare the edited line with the valid self-closing form:
<property name="ServerDisabledNetworkProtocols" value="LiteNetLib"/>. - Check for deleted quotation marks, an extra angle bracket, or a second malformed property line.
- Restore the backup to confirm that the failure is caused by the edit rather than an unrelated startup issue.
- Save the file as plain XML and ensure the filename and extension have not changed.
Some players connect, but others time out
Do not treat a timeout as proof that LiteNetLib itself is defective. Compare the affected players’ platforms, NAT conditions, and network locations. Recheck firewall and port-forwarding rules, then verify whether the installed game version imposes platform-specific protocol requirements. The XML setting controls which protocols the server denies; it does not repair a blocked port or an incorrectly routed address.
Players cannot discover the server
Separate discovery from transport. Ask an affected player to try the same direct-connect method used before the change, if your setup supports one, and compare that result with the server-listing path. If direct connection works but listing does not, investigate discoverability and platform behavior rather than repeatedly changing the deny-list value.

Both protocols were disabled accidentally
Stop the server and replace the value with LiteNetLib to leave SteamNetworking enabled, or use an empty value to allow both protocols. Restart with the active configuration file and repeat the controlled test. Keep a copy of the working value for future maintenance.
Common configuration mistakes
- Reading the key as an allow list: entering
SteamNetworkingdisables SteamNetworking; it does not force SteamNetworking on. - Editing the wrong copy: the server may be launched with a custom XML path.
- Editing while the process is running: a shutdown or automated manager can overwrite the file.
- Changing several systems at once: simultaneous firewall, router, and XML changes obscure the cause.
- Assuming a local success proves Internet reachability: local tests may not traverse NAT or port forwarding.
- Using a client-hosted game for a dedicated-server setting: the listen-host workflow does not expose the same administration control.
Restoring the original configuration
To undo the change, stop the server, restore the previous value, save the same XML file, and restart with the same launch options. For example, if the original line denied SteamNetworking, restore:
