Set the per-world DeathPenalties value to 0. In a hosting control panel, choose the Death Penalty option labeled No Loss; on a server you manage through files, stop the server and change DeathPenalties=0 in that world’s SandboxSettings.ini. Restart the server after saving.
The exact file location and panel labels vary by host, and available guidance is secondhand rather than official Hinterland documentation. Verify the path for your installation before editing, because changing one world does not automatically change another.
What setting removes death losses?
DeathPenalties controls the inventory loss applied when a player dies. A value of 0 means no loss. It is a sandbox setting, so it belongs to the individual world/save rather than being a single universal switch for every world on the machine.
Changing this value is separate from messages shown when someone dies and may be separate from durability loss. Do not assume that setting the inventory penalty to zero changes every death-related mechanic.

Before changing the server
- Confirm which world/save you want to modify. A server with several worlds can have different settings for each one.
- Have administrator or file-manager access to the server configuration.
- Stop the server completely before changing an INI file. Editing while the process is running can be overwritten when the server saves or shuts down.
- Make a backup of the existing settings file or world folder so you can restore the previous value.
- Record the current value of
DeathPenaltiesbefore changing it.
Method 1: Use the hosting control panel
A control-panel dropdown is the quickest and least error-prone method when your provider exposes the setting. One current host guide describes the option as No Loss, although menu names and locations can change as panels are updated.
- Stop the Abiotic Factor server from the host panel.
- Open the server’s configuration, gameplay, or sandbox-settings page.
- Find Death Penalty, Death Penalties, or a similarly named dropdown.
- Select No Loss. This should write the equivalent of
DeathPenalties=0. - Save or apply the configuration.
- Start the server again.
- Join the affected world and check the setting with a controlled test, or inspect the generated configuration if your host provides a file viewer.
If the panel offers numeric choices instead of descriptive labels, choose 0. If you cannot find a death-penalty control, use the manual method rather than changing an unrelated setting.

Method 2: Edit SandboxSettings.ini manually
Manual editing is appropriate for a self-managed dedicated server or a host that exposes its files. The important line is:

DeathPenalties=0- Stop the server and wait until its process is fully offline.
- Open the file manager, FTP/SFTP directory, or local server folder.
- Locate the
SandboxSettings.inibelonging to the world you want to change. - Create a backup copy before editing.
- Open the file as plain text.
- Find an existing
DeathPenalties=line. Replace only its value with0. - If the key is absent, add
DeathPenalties=0in the sandbox settings section used by your installation. Do not create a second conflicting entry elsewhere in the file. - Save the file without changing its
.iniextension or adding rich-text formatting. - Start the server and verify that the intended world loads.
Use the exact capitalization and spelling shown above. An extra space, a duplicate key, or editing a similarly named file in the wrong directory can leave the effective setting unchanged.
Where is the correct file?
There is no single path that applies to every Abiotic Factor server setup. Published host guidance identifies several layouts, and those references conflict. Treat the following as search locations, not universal guarantees.

Paths can also differ between Windows and Linux deployments, container images, and provider-specific file managers. Search the server directory for SandboxSettings.ini, then confirm that the file’s timestamps and surrounding folders correspond to the world currently launched by the server. If a provider has a world selector, open the selected world’s folder first.

DeathPenalties values explained
Host documentation and community references describe a scale from 0 through 5. The descriptions below explain the reported behavior; they are not an official Hinterland specification.

One Steam community discussion reports 1 as the default, but that default claim has low confidence and may depend on the game version or world setup. Check the value in your own configuration instead of relying on a presumed default.
Steam dedicated servers and a custom INI path
If you run a Steam dedicated server with the sandbox file in a custom location, one technical guide describes adding the -SandboxIniPath launch parameter to the server’s run script. The parameter tells the server where to read the custom sandbox configuration.

Because script syntax differs between Windows batch files, Linux shell scripts, service managers, and container launch commands, do not copy a quotation style blindly. Add the parameter to the same command that starts the server, point it at the intended INI file, then restart and inspect the startup behavior or loaded configuration to confirm that the custom path is being used.
What happens to existing worlds and players?
Only the edited world changes
Guidance describes these settings as per-world. If you edit World A, World B can continue using its previous death-penalty value. Repeat the change for each save that should have no loss.
Existing inventories are not retroactively restored
The setting controls the penalty applied to future deaths. It does not provide a documented way to return items lost before the change. Restore a backup or use whatever administrator recovery tools your server installation supports if earlier losses must be addressed.

Players may need to reconnect
After restarting, have players leave and rejoin if they still see old behavior. A running session can retain state until the server reloads the world.
Related settings that are easy to confuse
DurabilityLossOnDeathMultiplier
Some third-party guidance lists DurabilityLossOnDeathMultiplier=0.1 as a multiplier for durability lost on death. The cited material does not establish that DeathPenalties=0 disables durability loss, so treat durability as a separate setting. If your goal is to eliminate every death consequence, inspect the durability key in your own version and test it independently rather than assuming the inventory setting covers it.
ShowDeathMessages
ShowDeathMessages controls whether death announcements appear to players. One host reference reports a default of True. Turning messages off does not change item loss, and setting death penalties to zero does not necessarily hide announcements. Change this key only if you also want to alter chat or notification behavior.
How to verify that no-loss mode is active
- Stop and restart after saving the configuration; do not test against a server that was never restarted.
- Confirm that the server is launching the same world whose file you edited.
- Reopen the panel or INI and check that the effective value remains
0. - Use a low-risk, agreed-upon test death with no irreplaceable items. Check equipped items, hotbar contents, and inventory after respawning.
- If durability or messages matter to your ruleset, check those independently.
- Write down the working path and value so future updates or migrations do not require guesswork.
A test should verify the rule without risking valuable progression. Do not delete a backup until the server has restarted successfully and the correct world has been tested.
Troubleshooting when the setting does not work
The panel changed, but deaths still remove items
- Make sure you clicked Save or Apply and performed a full restart.
- Check that the panel’s No Loss label corresponds to numeric value
0, not merely a cosmetic preset. - Verify that you edited the active world rather than a different save slot.
- Look for a provider-generated configuration that overwrites manual edits during startup.
The INI line keeps reverting
- Stop the server before editing again.
- Check file permissions and ownership on a self-managed installation.
- Look for duplicate
DeathPenaltiesentries; remove the stale duplicate and keep one authoritative line. - Confirm that a launch parameter such as
-SandboxIniPathis not directing the server to another file. - Compare the file’s modified time before and after shutdown to identify an automated regeneration step.
No SandboxSettings.ini exists
- Search the entire server directory, including the selected world’s save folder and provider-specific configuration directories.
- Check the host’s file tree for a world-creation or sandbox-settings editor.
- Do not assume that creating a new file in
Savedwill work; some installations store sandbox values in world data. - Ask the provider which file is loaded by the current server image and game version.
The server fails to start after editing
- Restore the backup immediately.
- Check for accidental smart quotes, invalid characters, duplicate sections, or a changed file extension.
- Confirm that the line is exactly
DeathPenalties=0and that unrelated settings were not altered. - Start the server with the original file, then make one change at a time.

Recommended change procedure
For most managed servers, stop the server, select No Loss, save, restart, and test. For a server you manage directly, stop it, back up the active world configuration, set DeathPenalties=0, restart, and verify the loaded world. Keep the scope clear: this changes reported inventory-loss behavior, while durability and death-message settings may require separate edits.
