There is no universal renter-controlled switch. A rental car may have a factory camera, a fleet telematics unit, a microphone, or a connected-services account that continues operating even when the stereo is off. The only dependable, lawful way to limit recording or uploads is to identify the specific vehicle and provider policy before driving, ask what controls are authorized, and request another vehicle or provider if the answer does not meet your privacy needs.
Do not unplug, remove, cover, or modify installed equipment unless the rental provider expressly authorizes that action. At return, erase your own phone and account data from the infotainment system; that protects your personal information but does not disable the car’s cameras or telematics.
What you can and cannot disable
Rental cars do not use one standard dashcam or cloud system. A vehicle can combine several independent components:
- Road-facing or cabin-facing cameras that record video locally or send clips to a fleet platform.
- Telematics that reports location, speed, movement, fuel, diagnostics, crash events, or driving behavior.
- Microphones or audio features enabled by a connected service or camera configuration.
- Infotainment services that handle Bluetooth, USB, navigation, contacts, and accounts.
These components can have different power sources, contracts, and privacy controls. Turning off the display, muting the radio, disabling Bluetooth, or shutting down a media app may affect only the infotainment function. Avis states that some or all connected-car features can remain on at all times even when other services or media in the vehicle are turned off.

Consequently, “disable the dashcam” can mean several different outcomes: stop video capture, stop audio capture, stop cloud transmission, hide the lens, or stop all vehicle telemetry. A control that achieves one outcome may leave the others active. Ask the provider to identify exactly which function a proposed setting changes.
Before you book or collect the car
Ask about the exact vehicle, not just the rental class
Privacy features can vary by make, model, trim, model year, installed accessory, and station. Ask the rental company or car-sharing host whether the specific vehicle has:
- a forward-facing dashcam;
- a cabin or passenger-facing camera;
- a microphone or audio recording capability;
- manufacturer connected services;
- an added fleet-tracking or telematics device; and
- any camera or telematics disclosure in the rental agreement or listing.
Ask whether the system records continuously, records only after an event, or stores footage locally. Then ask what is transmitted, to whom, and when. “Connected car” is a broad label: Avis describes possible data such as location, movement, speed, fuel, diagnostic, and accident information, with collection depending on the vehicle and features used. Some vehicles may also capture images inside or outside the car and audio.

Use the reservation message, email, or rental-station notes to preserve the answer. Ask these questions in one message:
- Does this vehicle have a road-facing camera, cabin camera, microphone, or added telematics unit?
- What data is recorded during my rental?
- Is video, audio, location, or event data uploaded while the vehicle is moving or parked?
- Who receives the data and how is it accessed for accident, service, or rental-management purposes?
- Is there an authorized renter privacy control, and exactly what does it stop?
- Can you provide a different vehicle without that equipment, and can that be guaranteed?
Do not assume a booking category guarantees a camera-free car. Avis says it cannot guarantee that a vehicle without connected-car features will be available.
Compare alternatives using the same questions
If you are considering another vehicle or provider, compare these attributes rather than relying on a label such as “privacy mode.”

| Can another vehicle be guaranteed? | An informal promise at pickup may not provide a reliable privacy solution. |
At pickup: verify the agreement and equipment
Read the vehicle-specific disclosure
Before leaving the lot, inspect the rental agreement, equipment disclosure, and, for car-sharing, the vehicle listing and platform rules. Look for references to cameras, recordings, GPS, connected services, telematics, accident investigation, rental management, service analysis, or official disclosures.

A Toyota Rent a Car English-language agreement for Japan, for example, says some rental cars may have a dashboard camera and that driving may be recorded. It lists accident review, rental management, and service analysis as purposes and describes specified disclosure of GPS or camera information when legally required or requested by officials. That is a provider- and country-specific example, not a universal rule for rental cars elsewhere.
Locate the hardware without touching it
You may see a small camera behind the windshield, a lens near the rear-view mirror, a cabin-facing module, or a separate telematics box. Identifying the device helps the station explain its function, but do not press buttons, pull cables, remove memory cards, or alter its mounting while inspecting it.
Get an authorized answer before enabling a privacy setting
Some fleet systems have a documented privacy mode. If the provider confirms that a particular menu, switch, or vendor control is allowed for renters, ask the staff member to demonstrate it and state what remains active. Record that explanation with your rental documents. A setting intended for fleet administrators may not be available to, or permitted for, a renter.
Why common “fixes” do not reliably work
Turning off the stereo or Bluetooth
Media controls govern entertainment and phone connectivity, not necessarily the vehicle’s telematics. Avis expressly warns that connected-car features may stay on while other services or media are off. Turning off Bluetooth can prevent your phone from connecting, but it does not prove that the car stopped collecting location, speed, diagnostics, camera footage, or audio.

Covering the lens
A cover may hide the visible image while leaving the camera powered and other transmissions active. Verizon Connect documentation for certain AI Dashcam configurations says that, with a privacy cover, video is not visible but the vehicle’s tracking unit can continue sending location plots, harsh-driving events, and enabled audio to the fleet system. The same documentation describes another device-specific mode in which footage can still be recorded to an SD card even when it is not uploaded to the fleet platform.
Those instructions apply to specified Verizon Connect hardware, not every rental car. A physical cover can also be treated as interference under the rental agreement. Do not use one unless the provider gives explicit permission for that vehicle and explains the resulting recording and transmission behavior.
Unplugging or removing the device
Disconnecting a camera or telematics unit can disable safety, emergency, diagnostic, or contractual functions and may generate an equipment fault. Getaround’s July 2024 US terms describe a dashcam that may face forward and potentially inside, require disclosure in the listing, and prohibit renters from disabling, removing, or materially interfering with it. United Rentals’ equipment-rental terms similarly prohibit disabling or circumventing telematics devices and dashcams. These are examples of contractual restrictions; your own agreement controls, but the safe default is not to tamper.

Removing the memory card or resetting the infotainment system
A memory card may hold local footage without affecting a separate cellular modem or cloud queue. An infotainment reset erases user settings, not necessarily the camera, telematics firmware, or provider account. Neither action is an authorized privacy solution unless the provider specifically directs it.
What to do if the answer is not acceptable
Ask for another vehicle
Tell the station or host that recording or transmission does not meet your requirements and request a vehicle with a different configuration. Ask the staff member to confirm the replacement vehicle’s camera, audio, and telematics status before you accept the keys.
Availability may be limited. Avis does not guarantee that a car without connected-car features will be available, so do not treat a request as a guaranteed result until the provider confirms it in writing.
Choose a different provider when necessary
If no suitable vehicle is available, your practical options are to decline the rental, change the reservation, or use a provider whose written policy answers your questions. Compare the disclosure and contract, not just the provider’s marketing description.
Keep a record of the decision
Save messages, the agreement, and the name of the employee who explained the equipment. If a dispute later concerns a recording or an alleged interference, contemporaneous documentation shows what you asked and what permission, if any, you received.
During the rental
Use only documented, provider-approved controls
If staff identify an authorized privacy setting, follow the vehicle-specific instructions exactly. Ask whether it stops video capture, audio, cloud upload, location tracking, or only the display. Confirm whether footage can remain on local storage and whether event data continues to transmit.
Do not attempt workarounds
Do not unplug a power lead, pull a fuse, disconnect a cellular antenna, remove an SD card, place an object over a lens, or alter software. Even where a device appears inactive, a modification can violate the contract or interfere with accident and safety functions. A provider’s written authorization is the only reliable basis for an exception.

Understand what an inactive-looking camera means
A dark indicator or blank screen does not establish that the unit is off. Cameras can buffer locally, wake on motion or an impact, or send data later when a connection returns. Treat the provider’s documented explanation as the source of truth for that specific device.
At return: remove your personal information
Erasing your own data is a separate task from disabling vehicle recording. Avis warns that pairing a phone or device through Bluetooth, USB, or another method can leave information in the infotainment system and instructs renters to unpair the device and remove their information when returning the vehicle.

- Disconnect your phone from Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, USB profiles, and any other paired connection.
- Delete contacts, recent calls, messages, navigation destinations, saved addresses, driver profiles, and account tokens.
- Sign out of music, navigation, charging, or other accounts that you added.
- Remove your phone from the remembered-device list and confirm that it no longer appears after a restart.
- Check that you have taken physical items such as cables, memory cards that are yours, and charging adapters.
Use the car’s normal documented controls rather than forcing a factory reset that could affect provider settings. If the screen is unavailable, ask the return agent to document how your information will be removed.
Privacy questions that require the provider or local law
The available policies do not establish one worldwide disclosure or opt-out rule. Requirements can depend on the country, state or province, rental model, vehicle owner, and whether the system is a factory service or an added fleet device. Ask the provider how long data is retained, who can request it, and how an access or deletion request works under the law that applies to your rental.
Do not infer a retention period, a guaranteed deletion right, or a universal prohibition on cabin recording from a policy written for another market. The Japan-specific Toyota agreement and US platform terms illustrate why geography and contract language matter.

Practical scenarios
You only want to stop cloud video
Ask whether the specific system offers an authorized upload control and whether it continues local recording. A mode that blocks cloud transfer may still save footage to an SD card or transmit location and event data.
You do not want cabin recording
Ask whether a cabin lens or audio channel exists and whether the provider can assign a vehicle without it. Do not assume a forward-facing listing excludes an interior camera; the provider must identify the actual configuration.

You are worried about phone tracking
Unpair your phone and remove accounts at return. Bluetooth disconnection protects against leaving your phone profile in the car, but it does not disable the vehicle’s own GPS or telematics.
The vehicle has an unfamiliar camera
Stop before driving, photograph the device only if permitted, and ask the station or host to identify it and its recording policy. If the explanation is inadequate, request a different vehicle rather than manipulating the hardware.
Bottom line for renters
A rental car’s dashcam, cabin camera, and cloud connection are controlled by the vehicle owner, fleet operator, manufacturer, or platform—not by a universal renter switch. Media settings and Bluetooth are not reliable privacy controls. Your safest path is to ask precise questions about the specific vehicle, obtain permission for any available privacy mode, and change vehicles or providers when the disclosed collection does not fit your needs. Leave the installed equipment untouched, then clear your own infotainment data when you return the car.

Can I turn off a rental car’s dashcam myself?
Only if the provider explicitly authorizes a control for that specific vehicle. Do not unplug, remove, cover, or modify the equipment; rental and car-sharing terms may prohibit interference.
Does turning off Bluetooth stop a rental car from tracking me?
