To disable BattlEye on an Arma 3 dedicated server, stop the server, open its server.cfg, change the BattlEye setting from 1 to 0, save the file, and restart the server. The commonly documented forms are BattlEye = 0; and battleye=0;. Reversing the value to 1 and restarting turns protection back on.
This change removes the server’s BattlEye anti-cheat protection. It is normally reserved for password-protected private testing or mod-focused servers, not an open public server.

BattlEye is the anti-cheat component that a server can run alongside Arma 3. The switch is stored in the server’s server.cfg configuration file. The value determines whether BattlEye starts with the server process:

The examples differ in capitalization and spacing, but the important parts are the BattlEye key, the value 0 or 1, and the terminating semicolon. Hosting guides commonly show both styles. Because Arma 3 builds and server documentation can change, check the current Bohemia Interactive server documentation if your build rejects the line or behaves differently.

Before you edit the file
Confirm that you control the dedicated server
You need permission to stop the instance and edit its configuration. On a rented server, that usually means the provider’s control panel or file manager. On a self-managed machine, use the account and file-access method that normally starts the Arma 3 server.
Plan a short maintenance window
The edit does not apply to a running instance. Stopping the server disconnects current players, and the new setting is read when the process starts again. Tell players when the restart will occur if the server is shared.
Back up the configuration
Download or copy server.cfg before changing it. A backup lets you restore the previous configuration if the editor changes formatting or if the server fails to start after the edit. Keep the original file separate from the active copy so you do not accidentally overwrite the new setting.
Consider access control first
With BattlEye off, the server no longer has that anti-cheat protection. Nitrado’s guidance strongly discourages disabling it on a server that is not password protected. For a private test, add or retain a server password through your normal Arma 3 configuration and share it only with the intended players. A password limits access; it does not replace anti-cheat software on a public server.

Step-by-step: disable BattlEye in server.cfg
- Stop the Arma 3 server. Use the provider’s Stop or Shutdown control, or stop the dedicated-server process through your normal administration method. Wait until the control panel reports that it is offline before editing files.
- Open the active
server.cfg. In a hosting panel, use its file manager or configuration editor. With direct server access, open theserver.cfgused by the startup command. Servers can have more than one configuration file, so make sure you edit the file the instance actually loads rather than a template or an unused backup. - Find the BattlEye entry. Look for a line equivalent to
BattlEye = 1;. Some host documentation presents the key asbattleye=1;without spaces. Do not change unrelated settings while making this maintenance edit. - Change the value to zero. Replace only the value with
0, producingBattlEye = 0;or the host’s equivalentbattleye=0;. Leave the semicolon at the end of the statement. - Save the file. If the panel offers Save, Apply, or Save changes, use that control and wait for confirmation. If you edited a local copy, upload it back to the server’s active configuration location.
- Start the server again. Use the normal Start or Restart action. BattlEye will not be running for that instance if the correct file was loaded and the value was accepted.
- Verify the result. Check the startup status and server log available through your host. Confirm that you restarted the same instance whose configuration you edited. If the server still reports BattlEye activity, stop it and work through the troubleshooting section below rather than repeatedly changing files at random.
How to tell whether you edited the right configuration
A frequent cause of an apparently ineffective change is editing a file that the startup command does not use. Before troubleshooting syntax, establish which configuration is active:
- Use the configuration path shown in the hosting panel’s startup or launch settings.
- If you administer the machine directly, compare the path in the server’s launch command with the file you edited.
- Check whether the host maintains separate files for different instances, maps, or profiles.
- After saving, reopen the file through the same interface and confirm that the zero value is still present.
- Restart only after the old process has fully stopped; an overlapping process can make it appear that the new setting was ignored.
Do not assume that changing a similarly named template updates an already-running server. The setting is read from the file associated with the process you start.

Using a hosting provider’s control panel
Panel names vary, but the sequence is consistent: stop the server, open the file manager or configuration editor, edit the BattlEye line, save, then start the server. Some providers expose server.cfg under a Files, Configuration, or Advanced section; the exact label is provider-specific. If the panel has both a generated settings form and a raw-file editor, change the setting in the place that writes the active server.cfg, not in an unrelated notes field.
Using direct access to your own machine
Open the file with a plain-text editor that preserves the file as text. Avoid rich-text editors that add formatting characters. Make the single value change, save the file, and start the server using the same service, script, or command you normally use. No universal filesystem path applies, because paths depend on the installation and launch setup.

What changes for players when BattlEye is off
The server no longer receives BattlEye’s anti-cheat protection after the restart. That is a server-side security decision, not a performance guarantee and not a substitute for a mod-management policy. Players may be able to connect to a private or modded test environment that would otherwise require BattlEye, but the available documentation does not establish a universal rule for whether every client must also disable BattlEye. Do not assume that a client-side change is required or safe; check the current server and client documentation for your exact Arma 3 build and mod set.
For an open server, the practical consequence is exposure to players using cheats or unauthorized modifications. No reliable statistic was established for how often this occurs, so the decision should be based on your server’s access model and risk tolerance rather than a claimed percentage.
When disabling BattlEye is reasonable
Private development or testing
A password-protected server used by a small development group can justify a temporary disablement when a mod, tool, or test workflow conflicts with BattlEye. Keep the server inaccessible to the public, record who has the password, and restore protection when the test ends.
Controlled mod experimentation
Some administrators disable anti-cheat while diagnosing a heavily modified environment. Make the change for a defined test window, document the original value, and avoid treating the test server as a public gameplay server.

Public or lightly moderated communities
Disabling BattlEye is a poor fit for a publicly reachable server without a strong authentication and moderation plan. The absence of anti-cheat protection is the central trade-off, and a password warning from Nitrado specifically applies to servers that are not password protected.
Troubleshooting
The server still appears to run BattlEye
- Make sure the server process was stopped before the edit and restarted afterward.
- Reopen the file and confirm the value is
0, not1. - Check for multiple
server.cfgfiles and identify the one referenced by the launch configuration. - Confirm that the panel saved the file and did not regenerate it from an older template during startup.
- Look at the startup log to determine which configuration path the instance loaded.
The server will not start after the edit
- Restore the backup to determine whether the edit or an unrelated change caused the failure.
- Check that the line has a complete statement, including the semicolon:
BattlEye = 0;. - Remove accidental quotation marks or rich-text characters introduced by an editor.
- Make sure you changed only the BattlEye value and did not delete a neighboring configuration entry.
- If the build rejects the syntax, consult the current Bohemia Interactive server documentation; the host guides used for this procedure are not all from the same date.
The setting keeps reverting to one
A control panel may regenerate server.cfg from a saved profile or startup template. Save the change in the panel’s persistent configuration area if one exists, then restart and inspect the file again. If a provider manages the file automatically, ask its support team which setting controls BattlEye rather than repeatedly editing a generated copy.

Players cannot connect after the change
First confirm that the server itself starts and that the expected instance is online. Then check the server log and the player’s connection error. The available evidence does not establish one universal client-side requirement for every Arma 3 version or mod combination, so do not diagnose all connection failures as a BattlEye issue. Revert to 1 temporarily if you need to determine whether the change is involved, and test again with the same server and mod configuration.
How to re-enable BattlEye
- Stop the server completely.
- Open the active
server.cfg. - Change the BattlEye value from
0back to1, using the same syntax style already present. - Save the file and verify that it contains the one-valued entry.
- Start the server and check its startup status or log.
Re-enabling is the same edit in reverse; it also requires a restart before the server uses the new value. Remove any temporary password or testing access controls only after confirming that BattlEye is active and the server is ready for its intended audience.

Why you should avoid unofficial patched executables
A forum result advertises a modified arma3server_x64.exe that purportedly runs without BattlEye, but the binary was not verified and its security properties are unknown. Replacing the official executable adds a separate supply-chain and malware risk while making future updates and support harder. The configuration switch is the documented approach; do not download or run an unofficial patched server binary to accomplish this change.
Version and syntax cautions
The host instructions available for this procedure range from recent to several years old, and Arma 3 server builds change over time. The exact setting syntax is therefore best treated as medium-confidence until checked against the live Bohemia Interactive wiki for your build. If your server’s current documentation uses a different key or configuration format, follow that documentation rather than forcing the examples above. Keep a dated backup of the working file so you can restore service after an update.

Do I need to disable BattlEye on every player’s computer?
