On most HP laptops running Windows 10 or Windows 11, turn off the touchpad through Windows Settings: search for touchpad settings, open the result, and switch the Touchpad control off. You can use the keyboard if you do not have a mouse. HP documents these steps in its touchpad guide for Windows 10 and 11.
Turn off the touchpad in Windows Settings
- Search Windows for touchpad settings and open the matching Settings result.
- Switch the Touchpad control off. To turn the touchpad back on, return to the same setting and switch it on.
In Windows 11, the Settings path is Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad. The labels or options available can vary by device.
Disable it only when a mouse is connected
If you want to use an external mouse without accidentally moving the pointer on the touchpad, leave the main Touchpad control on and clear Leave the touchpad on when a mouse is connected. Windows can then disable the touchpad when a mouse is connected, while leaving it available when the mouse is not connected.

Use the keyboard if you cannot use a mouse
After opening Touchpad settings, press Tab until focus reaches the Touchpad button, then press Space to change its state. This lets you turn the touchpad off or on without another pointing device.

Try the upper-left-corner gesture on supported touchpads
Some HP touchpads toggle off and on when you double-tap the upper-left corner. HP describes this as a feature of some touchpads, not a universal HP shortcut. If the gesture does not work, use the Windows setting instead.
If the Touchpad control is missing
HP recommends installing the latest touchpad driver through Windows Update if Windows does not show an enable or disable option. For model-specific controls and gestures, consult the user guide for your HP laptop.
