Most TVs do not have a universal setting that electrically disables an HDMI port. What you can do depends on your goal: stop automatic input switching by changing HDMI-CEC settings, hide an input from the menu on supported TVs, or unplug the connected device. A true input lock is model-specific, so check the manual for your exact TV before relying on it.
First, decide what you mean by “disable”
HDMI carries video and audio, while HDMI-CEC is a separate control feature that lets compatible devices communicate with the TV. A connected device may use CEC to turn the TV on or change its active input. Turning CEC off can stop some of that control, but it does not show that the TV’s HDMI video input has been deactivated.

Stop a TV from switching to HDMI by itself
Look for HDMI-CEC settings on the TV and the connected device. Manufacturers use different names: LG calls its feature SIMPLINK, Samsung calls it Anynet+, and Sony labels the controls HDMI CEC Settings. Turning CEC off may also remove CEC-based power or device-control functions.

LG TVs: SIMPLINK
LG says SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC) can let a connected device switch the TV input automatically. Its US support guidance recommends turning off SIMPLINK to prevent a connected device’s signal from changing the input. The page, dated September 28, 2026, also discusses Quick Start+ and deleting connection history if the problem continues. Menu paths differ by webOS version and model; use LG’s instructions for your TV rather than assuming one path fits all.

Samsung TVs: Anynet+
Samsung calls HDMI-CEC Anynet+. Its US troubleshooting instructions provide remote-button sequences for disabling automatic HDMI switching. The sequence depends on whether you have a Smart Remote or an infrared remote, and Samsung notes that a software update may be needed for the option to appear. Follow the instructions for your TV and remote; a generic menu path may not match.
Sony TVs: HDMI CEC Settings
For the software covered by Sony’s Help Guide, the path is Settings > Channels & Inputs > External inputs > HDMI CEC Settings > CEC. Options include Device auto power off and TV auto power on. Sony says available options vary by model and region. These power settings should not be mistaken for a control that disables video on an HDMI port.

Hide an HDMI input from the menu
Some TVs let you hide an input tile without turning off the connector. On Roku TV, open the input tile’s star menu, choose Hide, and confirm. Hidden inputs disappear from the Home screen and Quick Access. To restore one, go to Settings > TV inputs and unhide it. Roku’s input guide, updated October 1, 2026, covers this menu behavior. Hiding an input only changes what appears in the interface; it does not block a device from using the port.

Possibly, but availability and instructions depend on the TV model. The manufacturer guidance cited here does not establish a universal parental-control or input-lock procedure for HDMI. If you need to prevent a child or guest from selecting a specific input, search the manual for the exact model number for terms such as “input lock” or “parental controls,” or contact the manufacturer. Do not assume that hiding an input tile is a lock.

Make a port physically unavailable
If you simply want a particular device disconnected, unplug it from the TV. This does not alter the TV’s software settings, and it does not stop other connected devices from sending CEC signals. Samsung’s connection guide explains connecting devices to available HDMI inputs and selecting the source; it describes connection and settings, not a way to deactivate a port.

Exact labels and options can vary with the TV model, software version, region, and remote. Samsung notes that software updates can affect automatic-switching controls; LG and Sony likewise qualify their guidance by model or region. Identify the TV’s model number and software version before following brand-specific steps, especially if the setting is missing or the described path does not match your screen.
