To remove computer-controlled road traffic from an Euro Truck Simulator 2 (ETS2) or American Truck Simulator (ATS) multiplayer server, stop the server, change its traffic setting to disabled or false, save the configuration, and start the server again. Hosting panels usually expose a Traffic control; servers with file access use server_config.sii or a provider’s configuration editor.

The setting name is not consistent across every host or server package. Some configurations use traffic: false, while one hosting guide identifies g_traffic, with g_traffic = 0 claimed to disable AI traffic. Check the live configuration rather than assuming one key applies to every ETS2 or ATS version.

What “traffic off” removes—and what it does not

This setting controls AI vehicles generated by the game’s traffic system. It is intended for multiplayer sessions where you want empty roads, simpler convoy driving, screenshots, racing events, or lower synchronization work. It does not remove human players, moderators, parked scenery vehicles, service vehicles that are part of map content, or traffic added by a mod unless that mod has its own control.

The change is normally scoped to one server instance. If you operate separate ETS2 and ATS servers, or several worlds for different groups, edit each server’s settings independently. A change on one instance should not be assumed to propagate to another.

Traffic is a server-side choice. Players may need to reconnect after the restart, and an already-running session will continue using the old setting until the process is restarted.

Before changing the setting

  • Confirm that you have administrator or file-manager access to the server.
  • Tell connected players that the server will be stopped. Editing while the game process is writing its configuration can overwrite your change or leave a malformed file.
  • Make a copy of the current configuration before editing. Keep the backup outside the live configuration directory and label it with the server name and date.
  • Identify whether your provider offers a control-panel setting or a raw-file editor. Use the panel control when it is available; it avoids syntax mistakes.
  • Plan a short test on a non-production server if the world is busy or the configuration contains custom settings.

Method 1: use the hosting panel

Panel labels vary by provider, but the sequence is the same: stop, open the server settings, disable traffic, save, and start.

Shockbyte

  1. Stop the Truck Simulator server from the hosting panel and wait until its status shows that the process has ended.
  2. Open Files, then Config Files, and select Truck Simulator Server Settings.
  3. Find Traffic and choose Disabled from the dropdown.
  4. Save the configuration.
  5. Start the server and wait for it to finish loading before asking players to reconnect.

The exact labels can change as a provider updates its panel. If the named configuration page is missing, use the provider’s file manager and follow the raw-file method below.

G-Portal

  1. Stop the server.
  2. Open Basic Settings.
  3. Locate the Traffic slider and deactivate it.
  4. Save, then start the server again.

A slider that appears enabled after saving may represent the old value cached in the page. Refresh the panel and verify the value before starting, rather than relying only on the visual position of the control.

Host Havoc and similar configuration editors

  1. Stop the server from the control panel.
  2. Open the server_config.sii Config Editor.
  3. Set the traffic option to its disabled value.
  4. Save the file and start the server.

Other providers may call the page “Server Settings,” “Configuration,” or “Truck Simulator Settings.” Search the panel for traffic if the option is not visible on the first page. Do not edit an unrelated game profile or a backup copy.

Method 2: edit server_config.sii directly

Use this method only when the panel does not expose a traffic control or when your deployment requires a file-based configuration. The file contains other session settings, so change only the relevant line.

  1. Stop the process. Use the panel’s Stop command or your service manager. Do not edit while the server is running.
  2. Open the live configuration. Providers commonly expose it through a file manager, an online editor, FTP/SFTP, or a mounted Docker volume. One ETS2 hosting guide places the file in the local share folder; your installation may use a different directory.
  3. Make a backup. Download or copy the original server_config.sii before touching it.
  4. Search for both names. Search the complete file for traffic and separately for g_traffic. The key used by one host or game package may not exist in another.
  5. Edit the key that is actually present. For a Boolean entry, change true to false. Preserve the existing spelling, indentation, colon, and line structure.
  6. Save as plain text. Do not add quotation marks, smart punctuation, or a second copy of the same setting.
  7. Start the server. Watch the startup log or panel status for a normal launch, then test with one or two clients.

A Boolean entry generally looks like this:

traffic: false

To restore AI traffic later, change that same value back to true, save while the server is stopped, and restart.

Which key should you change?

There is no single, consistently documented key across the hosting instructions reviewed for ETS2 and ATS. The following table separates the observed options from settings that only limit traffic.

Setting or control What the source describes How to treat it
Panel “Traffic” dropdown Shockbyte exposes a dropdown in Truck Simulator Server Settings; Disabled turns the option off. Use the panel value, save, and restart.
Panel “Traffic” slider G-Portal exposes a Traffic slider that can be deactivated. Deactivate the control, save, and restart.
traffic: false Xgamingserver, Cybrancee, and BisectHosting describe changing a Boolean traffic line from true to false. Use it only if that line exists in your live file.
g_traffic FREAKHOSTING says this numeric value governs AI traffic volume and claims that 0 disables all AI traffic. Verify the key in your file and test it. This is host guidance, not an official SCS confirmation.
max_ai_vehicles_player and max_ai_vehicles_player_spawn MintServers describes these as limits on how much AI traffic is generated around each player. They regulate quantity; the available evidence does not establish that they override a traffic-off setting.
ETS_SERVER_TRAFFIC A GitHub convoy-server project documents this environment variable as an enable/disable control. Use the value and syntax documented by the specific project image or deployment you run.

The dedicated-server page in the official SCS Modding Wiki identifies server_config.sii as a location for session description, connection port, logon token, and moderator-list data, but its excerpt does not confirm a traffic parameter. Do not present traffic or g_traffic as officially supported by SCS solely because a hosting guide mentions them.

How to verify that AI traffic is really disabled

  1. Start the server after saving the setting and wait for a healthy “running” state.
  2. Join with a test account or ask one player to connect first. Keep the test short so you can roll back without disrupting a full session.
  3. Drive through an area that normally produces regular AI vehicles, such as a city approach or highway interchange.
  4. Check that human players still appear and can interact normally. Their presence does not indicate that the AI traffic setting failed.
  5. Restart the server once more and repeat a brief check. A setting that works only until the next restart may be getting regenerated by a template, startup script, or panel.
  6. If traffic remains, stop the server and inspect the live file again. Confirm that you edited the active instance, not a downloaded backup, another profile, or a similarly named configuration.

Do not judge the result from a single empty road segment. AI vehicles can be sparse in some locations, and map or gameplay modifications may change what appears. Use a route that normally produces traffic and compare it with a known working configuration.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause Action
The panel option is missing. The provider uses a raw editor, a different settings page, or a customized server template. Stop the server, search the file manager for server_config.sii, and search the file for traffic and g_traffic.
The server will not start after editing. A syntax error, duplicate key, damaged encoding, or accidental change to another line. Stop the service, restore the backup, start it to confirm recovery, then make one smaller change with a plain-text editor.
AI vehicles still spawn. The wrong key was edited, the server was not restarted, or a mod or startup template rewrote the file. Verify the active instance, inspect both possible key names, restart, and check whether an automated deployment regenerates the file.
Players cannot connect after the restart. The process did not finish starting, the configuration was malformed, or the panel saved a different profile. Read the startup status and logs, restore the last working backup if necessary, and test with one client before reopening the server.
Traffic is reduced but not gone. A limit such as max_ai_vehicles_player was lowered rather than disabled, or the chosen numeric value is not interpreted as zero by that build. Check for a true Boolean disable option. If using g_traffic, confirm that the key exists and test the claimed zero value on a non-production server.
The setting returns after every deployment. A Docker environment variable, startup script, control-panel template, or host-side configuration is the source of truth. Change the template or environment variable used to generate the live file, then redeploy and verify the resulting configuration.

Using g_traffic safely

One FREAKHOSTING guide identifies g_traffic as a numeric AI-traffic volume setting and says 0 disables all AI traffic. The same guidance warns that values above 3.0 significantly increase CPU synchronization load. The publication year for that guidance is not stated, and it is not an official SCS specification.

Because the key is not consistently reported by other hosting instructions, treat this as a configuration-specific option rather than a universal rule. If your live file contains g_traffic, record its original value, set it to zero only on a test instance, and verify both startup and in-game behavior. If the key is absent, do not insert it merely because another provider uses it; use the control exposed by your host or follow that deployment’s documentation.

Re-enabling traffic

To restore normal AI traffic, stop the server again and reverse the change you made:

  • Panel dropdown: change Disabled to the provider’s enabled or default value.
  • Panel slider: activate the Traffic control.
  • Boolean file entry: change traffic: false to traffic: true.
  • Numeric file entry: restore the previous g_traffic value recorded in your backup, rather than guessing a new number.
  • Docker deployment: restore the project’s enabled value for ETS_SERVER_TRAFFIC, then redeploy.

Save only after the process has stopped, start the server, and perform the same short route test used when disabling traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Operational recommendations

  • Keep a dated copy of every working configuration so you can revert quickly.
  • Document which control your host uses. A note saying “Traffic dropdown disabled” is more useful than assuming every future server uses traffic: false.
  • Apply the change separately to each ETS2 or ATS server instance.
  • After a host-panel migration or game-server image upgrade, recheck the live file because labels, templates, and key names can change.
  • Use a test server for uncertain numeric settings, especially where a host claims a CPU-impact threshold. The reported 3.0 threshold is provider guidance, not a benchmark or an official game limit.
