To direct connect, open Space Engineers, choose Join Game on the main screen, select Direct Connect, and enter the server address in IP:port format. Use the public IP address and configured port supplied by the server owner; the documented default dedicated-server port is UDP 27016, but an administrator can change it.
If the game reports that the server is not responding, verify the address, port, server status, password, Steam/EOS network, router forwarding, and firewall before changing anything else.
What you need before connecting
Direct Connect is for a private game whose host gives you a reachable address. Ask the owner for all of the following before opening the game:
- The server’s IP address or hostname.
- The listening port, written with the address when possible, such as
203.0.113.25:27016. - The password, if the server is protected.
- Whether the server uses the Steam network or EOS (Epic Online Services).
- Whether you are expected to connect over the internet or from the same local network.
Do not assume that every server uses port 27016. Keen Software House documents UDP 27016 as the default dedicated-server listen port, but the owner may have selected another port. The port in the owner’s instructions takes precedence.

Direct-connect steps in the game
- Start Space Engineers. Wait for the main screen to load.
- Choose Join Game. This opens the multiplayer browser and the available connection methods.
- Choose Direct Connect. The button is on the Join Game screen. It is the option intended for a private game when the host has given you an IP address.
- Enter the address and port. Use the supplied value in
IP:portform. For a server using the documented default, the form isserver-address:27016. Replace that example with the actual public address and configured port. - Select the matching network view on PC. Use the Steam view for a Steam server or the EOS view for an EOS server. Steam is the PC-only path; EOS supports PC, PlayStation, and Xbox crossplay.
- Submit the connection. If the server requires authentication, enter its password when prompted.
The official multiplayer guidance describes the process simply: when someone gives you the IP address of a private game, press Direct Connect to paste it and connect. Direct Connect does not discover a server for you; it uses the address and port you provide.
How to type the address
Use a colon between the address and port, with no spaces. For example, if the owner gives you an address and the default port, enter 203.0.113.25:27016. If the owner changed the port, enter that value instead, such as 203.0.113.25:28016. The second example is only a formatting illustration; use the real port from the administrator.
If the owner supplied an address that already includes a port, do not append 27016 a second time. If the owner supplied only an IP address, ask which port the server is listening on rather than guessing.
Use the right address: public versus LAN
Connecting from outside the host’s network
A remote player needs the host’s reachable public address and the forwarded listening port. A private address such as 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, or another address used only inside a home network normally cannot be reached directly from the internet. Ask the owner for the public IP address shown by the hosting connection, along with the configured port.
Connecting inside the same local network
A player on the host’s LAN may need the server computer’s LAN address instead. Which address works depends on the router and local network configuration. If the public address fails for a player sitting in the same home, ask the owner whether a LAN address should be used for local players.

Why the distinction matters
The address and port identify two different things: the address selects a network location, while the port selects the service listening there. A correct public IP with the wrong port fails, and a correct port paired with a private LAN address is not reachable by an outside player.

Space Engineers separates Steam and EOS server paths. On PC, select the view that matches the server owner’s configuration before submitting the Direct Connect request. A Steam server is intended for PC players through Steam. An EOS server can support crossplay among PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, provided the server and player versions and settings support that arrangement.
If the address and port are correct but the server still does not appear or respond, confirm the network type with the owner. Choosing Steam for an EOS server, or EOS for a Steam server, can prevent a successful connection even when the numeric address is correct.
What Direct Connect does not do
Direct Connect does not start a stopped server, open a closed router port, bypass a firewall, or convert a private LAN address into a public one. It only sends a connection request to the address and port entered in the game.
The Join Game screen also contains public dedicated servers, player-hosted games, LAN games, and friends. Those listings are different discovery methods. Use Direct Connect when the host has deliberately given you an address, rather than expecting the game browser to find a private server automatically.

Fix “server is not responding” in the right order
Work from the information most likely to be wrong to the changes that require the server owner. Only the owner can correct a stopped service, router rule, or host firewall.
1. Recheck the complete address
Compare every character with the owner’s message. Confirm that you entered the public address when connecting from outside the host’s home network, and that the port follows the address with a colon. A typo in either part produces the same generic connection failure as an offline server.
2. Confirm the configured port
UDP 27016 is the documented default, not a universal requirement. If the administrator changed the listen port, entering 27016 will fail even when the IP address is correct. Ask the owner to read the active port from the server configuration and send the complete address again.
3. Ask whether the dedicated server is running
The owner should verify that the dedicated-server process is started and listening on the expected port. A machine that is powered on is not necessarily running the game server, and a server that is launching may not accept connections yet.

On PC, return to the Join Game screen and select the network view that matches the server. Ask whether the server is Steam-based or EOS-based if the owner did not specify it.

5. Verify password handling
If the server is password-protected, enter the current password when prompted. An outdated password can look like a connection problem, so have the owner confirm whether the password was changed.
6. Check router forwarding on an internet server
For players outside the host’s network, the router must forward incoming UDP traffic on the configured port to the computer running the dedicated server. Keen’s documentation specifically describes forwarding UDP 27016, or the alternate port selected by the administrator. If the router forwards a different port, the request will reach the wrong service or nowhere at all.

7. Check the host firewall
The same UDP traffic must be allowed through the operating system or security appliance firewall on the server computer. A router rule alone is insufficient if the host firewall blocks the incoming packet.
8. Confirm that the public IP has not changed
Residential connections can receive a different public address after a reconnect or router restart. Have the owner verify the currently reachable public IP rather than reusing an old address from a previous session. Keen recommends a static public IP for hosting players outside the local network; that recommendation is for the host, not for someone merely joining.
9. Inspect the dedicated-server configuration
The official support guidance recommends checking the public IP-and-port combination and the SpaceEngineersDedicated.cfg file. The file should reflect the port the owner is forwarding and the server process is actually using. If the configuration and router disagree, correct both to the same value.

Host-side setup for an internet connection
If you are the owner, complete these checks before sending an address to other players:
- Install and start the Space Engineers dedicated server on the intended host computer.
- Confirm the server’s selected listen port in its configuration. Use UDP 27016 if you want the documented default, or record the alternate port you selected.
- Give the host computer a consistent LAN address so the router rule continues pointing to the same machine.
- In the router, forward incoming UDP traffic on the selected port to that computer.
- Allow the same UDP port through the computer’s firewall.
- Confirm the server process is running and listening after the forwarding rule is saved.
- Send players the current public IP address, port, password, and Steam/EOS choice.
Keen’s dedicated-server documentation states that incoming UDP traffic on port 27016, or any other specified port, must be forwarded to the computer where the dedicated server runs. Port forwarding is therefore a host networking task; a joining player cannot repair it from the Direct Connect dialog.
Dedicated-server requirements versus player requirements
The documented minimum resources apply to the computer hosting a dedicated server. They are not prerequisites for a player joining someone else’s server.

A player connecting to an existing server does not need to provide those server resources. The host must meet the requirements and maintain the network path; the player needs the game, the correct address and port, the matching Steam/EOS path, and any required password.
Choosing between self-hosting and rented hosting
Direct Connect works with either a server operated on a home or office machine or a rented dedicated-server instance, as long as the owner gives players a reachable address and port.
Self-hosting
- Provides direct control over the server configuration and installed mods.
- Requires administration of the host computer, router forwarding, firewall rules, public addressing, updates, and uptime.
- Depends on the host connection remaining available while players are online.
Rented hosting
- A provider operates the physical or virtual server and network connection.
- The owner generally receives a connection address and manages settings through the provider’s controls.
- Recurring cost, platform availability, mod controls, and support vary by provider and plan.
When evaluating either option, check the platform (PC, Xbox, or crossplay), Steam or EOS support, configuration and mod control, who handles router and firewall administration, expected uptime, and recurring cost. A provider’s name alone does not establish that its service supports the server type you need; confirm those points before committing.
A quick connection checklist
- Open Main Screen → Join Game → Direct Connect.
- Enter the complete address in
IP:portformat. - Use the host’s public IP for an internet connection or the appropriate LAN address for a local connection.
- Use the actual configured port; 27016 is only the documented default.
- Select Steam or EOS to match the server on PC.
- Enter the password if requested.
- If it fails, have the owner check the running server,
SpaceEngineersDedicated.cfg, UDP forwarding, firewall access, and current public IP.
When to contact the server owner
Contact the owner rather than repeatedly changing client settings when the error persists after a carefully checked address and network selection. The owner controls the facts that Direct Connect cannot reveal: whether the process is running, which port it listens on, whether the router forwards that port, whether the firewall permits it, whether the public IP changed, and whether the password or Steam/EOS configuration was updated.
Give the owner the exact address you entered, the port, the Steam/EOS view selected, and the wording of the error. That information lets them compare your request with the active server configuration without guessing.
