The practical answer is to use two different workflows: extract CD audio tracks into files, then read supported DVD or Blu-ray video sources and transcode them into a playback format. You need an optical drive that matches each disc type, enough storage, software suited to the task, and a legal basis for making the copy in your jurisdiction. HandBrake can convert supported video sources to MP4, MKV, or WebM, but it does not defeat copy protection and is not a universal disc-ripping tool.

Digitization means different things for audio and video discs

A CD, DVD, or Blu-ray is not simply a different size of the same kind of file. Audio CDs store tracks in a format intended for an audio player. DVDs and Blu-rays contain video titles, menus, audio streams, subtitles, and often more than one version of the program. Your workflow should therefore begin by identifying what you want to preserve.

CDs: extract the audio tracks

CD digitization is audio extraction. Software reads the tracks through a computer’s CD-capable optical drive and writes them as audio files in a format you select. The disc’s audio is not being converted from one video codec to another; the task is to read the track data, name it, and store it in your library.

DVDs and Blu-rays: read a video source, then convert it when needed

Video-disc digitization generally has two stages. First, the computer must read the physical disc or a disc backup. Second, an encoder can convert a supported source into a file that phones, computers, televisions, or media servers can play. HandBrake describes itself as an open-source transcoder for Linux, Mac, and Windows. Its documented outputs include MP4, MKV, and WebM.

That distinction matters: HandBrake normally converts video rather than passing it through unchanged. A smaller file is convenient, but it represents an encoding decision, not a perfect bit-for-bit copy of the original disc structure.

What equipment and software do you need?

Match the optical drive to the collection

A computer optical drive must be able to read the format you are processing. A CD or DVD-capable drive is not automatically a Blu-ray reader. If your collection includes Blu-rays, use a Blu-ray-reading drive, whether it is installed internally or connected as an external USB device.

For an external drive, check the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact disc formats supported and for compatibility with your computer’s operating system and USB connection. No particular drive model has been established as superior here, so compatibility is more important than a generic speed claim.

Plan storage before you begin

The files you create need space on the computer or on external storage. Required capacity depends on the number of discs, the length of each program, and your video encoding choices. Source-like video files consume substantially more space than aggressively compressed files, while smaller files require more conversion and can sacrifice quality.

  • Reserve working space for an output file while the source remains available.
  • Use storage with enough free capacity for the whole batch rather than calculating only one disc.
  • Keep a second copy of irreplaceable personal recordings if the files are your only practical access to the content.

Use separate software paths

For CDs, choose an audio-extraction application that can read tracks through your drive, identify or accept your metadata, and write the file format your players support. The available evidence does not establish one official CD-ripping application or validate particular lossless settings, so select software based on your operating system, format needs, and its own current documentation.

For DVDs and Blu-rays, HandBrake is useful when it can open the source. It accepts supported discs or disc backups and converts them to common container formats. It is not a replacement for every disc-reading or decryption utility.

Prepare a repeatable library plan

Decide how files will be named and organized before inserting the first disc. A consistent plan prevents duplicate titles and makes later playback easier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Create separate top-level folders for audio, films, television, concerts, and personal recordings if those categories fit your collection.
  2. Choose a naming pattern that includes the album or program title, year when useful, and disc or season information where a release spans multiple discs.
  3. Decide whether a multi-disc audio release will be one folder with disc numbers or separate folders. Apply the same rule throughout the library.
  4. Record the original disc label and any edition or language information that will help you identify the source later.
  5. Keep temporary conversion files separate from finished files so an interrupted encode is not mistaken for a completed copy.

How to digitize a CD

Step 1: verify the drive and disc

Connect or install a drive that can read CDs. Insert the disc and wait for the operating system and audio software to identify its tracks. If the disc is not recognized, clean it gently, try another drive, and confirm that the drive is connected directly rather than through a malfunctioning hub.

Step 2: choose the output approach

Select an audio format according to where you will listen. A lossless option preserves the decoded audio without the reduction associated with a lossy encode and generally requires more storage. A compressed option uses less space and may be easier for older or specialized players. The important decision is the trade-off between storage, compatibility, and whether you may need to extract again later.

Step 3: set metadata deliberately

Review the album, artist, track, disc, and genre fields supplied by the software. Online metadata can be incomplete or can identify a different pressing, so compare it with the physical booklet. Correct spelling and disc numbers before starting the extraction; fixing a whole library later is slower.

Step 4: extract and inspect the files

Start the extraction and wait for the application to report completion. Open several tracks, including the first and last track, and check that they play from beginning to end. Look for skips, clicks, missing artwork if artwork matters to your player, and files saved in the intended folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 5: preserve the result

Copy completed audio to your planned library and back it up before reusing or disposing of the disc. If an extraction repeatedly fails at the same track, try cleaning the disc or using another compatible drive. Do not assume a file is sound merely because the software reached 100 percent.

How to digitize a DVD or Blu-ray with HandBrake

HandBrake’s documented workflow applies to supported sources, including physical discs and common DVD or Blu-ray backup structures. Compatibility varies by disc and backup, and commercial discs may contain protection that HandBrake cannot handle.

Step 1: confirm the source is legally and technically usable

Insert the DVD or Blu-ray into a matching optical drive, or place the disc backup in an accessible folder. If HandBrake cannot open the source, that may reflect the backup structure, an unsupported format, disc damage, or copy protection. Do not interpret a failed scan as an invitation to bypass protection.

Step 2: open the source

  1. Launch HandBrake.
  2. Choose the physical disc or the supported backup folder or file as the source.
  3. Wait while HandBrake scans the source. Large discs and slow drives can take time.

HandBrake can show multiple titles. A title may be the main feature, a bonus item, a trailer, or another version of the program. Review duration and chapter information rather than automatically accepting the first entry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 3: select the intended title and tracks

Choose the title you actually want. Then review the available video, audio, and subtitle tracks. Select the language and commentary tracks you expect to use, and decide whether subtitles should be included as selectable tracks or rendered into the picture when that option is available in your workflow.

The pop-up button and built-in cable design offer convenience and portability. For desktop PCs, connecting to a rear USB port is recommended for optimal power and performance.

Step 4: choose a preset for the playback target

Presets balance compatibility, quality, file size, and encoding time. A broadly compatible preset is usually the safer choice when a file must play on several kinds of devices. A more demanding preset may retain more visual detail or reduce size at the cost of longer processing and narrower device support. The best choice depends on your actual players, not on a universal “highest” setting.

Step 5: choose the container and destination

HandBrake can produce MP4, MKV, or WebM. Select the container your playback software supports, set a clear destination filename, and verify that the destination drive has enough free space. Avoid saving directly into a synchronized or removable location that may disconnect during encoding.

Step 6: start the encode

Start the conversion and allow the computer to finish. Encoding time varies with the source, preset, computer, and output choices. Closing the application, disconnecting the drive, or allowing the computer to sleep can interrupt the job.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 7: verify before archiving

Play the finished file from beginning to end, or at minimum inspect the opening, several chapters, the ending, all selected audio tracks, and subtitles. Confirm that the picture and sound remain synchronized. Check the filename and folder before deleting any temporary output or ejecting a source you still need.

Should you keep a large source-like file or a smaller converted file?

There is no single correct output. Use the following comparison to make the trade-off explicit.

Output choice Expected playback compatibility File size Encoding time Does it convert the video?
Less-compressed, source-like video output May be less universal because players must support the chosen container and codecs Larger Usually longer or more demanding Yes, when created through HandBrake; it is not an unchanged disc structure
Moderately compressed output using a broadly compatible preset Generally the practical choice for mixed devices, subject to each device’s support Moderate Moderate Yes
Highly compressed output Can be convenient on supported devices, but settings may limit quality or compatibility Smaller May still require substantial encoding time Yes

If future re-encoding flexibility matters, retain a higher-quality master when storage allows and create smaller viewing copies separately. If the priority is fitting a library onto limited storage, use a smaller preset and accept that another conversion may not restore detail already discarded.

What HandBrake cannot do

HandBrake’s documentation states that it does not defeat or circumvent copy protection and does not work with many protected commercial DVD and Blu-ray discs. It should therefore be described as a transcoder for supported sources, not as a universal disc-ripping or decryption program.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • It cannot make every commercial DVD or Blu-ray readable.
  • It does not establish that you are legally entitled to copy a disc.
  • It does not preserve the complete disc experience simply by producing an MP4, MKV, or WebM file.
  • It may expose several titles, so choosing the wrong title can produce a trailer, bonus feature, or alternate version instead of the main program.

For a disc that HandBrake cannot open, first check the drive format, the source structure, and whether the disc is damaged. If protection is involved, stop and review the law where you live rather than seeking instructions to circumvent it.

Hardware choices by collection type

Collection Required disc capability Computer connection to check Storage planning
Audio CDs only CD-reading optical drive Internal interface or compatible USB connection Depends on audio format and number of albums
DVDs DVD-reading optical drive Operating-system and USB compatibility if external Depends on video duration and encoding choice
Blu-rays Blu-ray-reading optical drive Operating-system and USB compatibility; confirm the drive is a reader, not merely a writer for another format Usually requires more planning because high-resolution video files can be large
Mixed CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays A drive or combination of drives that covers every format Confirm each drive works with the same computer Calculate space from the largest video outputs as well as audio

Common problems and practical fixes

The computer cannot see the disc

  • Check that the drive supports the inserted format.
  • Reconnect an external drive, try another USB port, and avoid an unreliable hub.
  • Inspect the disc for dirt or damage and test another known-good disc.
  • For Blu-ray, verify that the hardware is explicitly a Blu-ray reader.

HandBrake scans the disc but shows unexpected titles

Compare title durations, chapter counts, and descriptions. Select the entry matching the feature you intend to keep; do not assume the longest or first title is always correct.

The output file is too large

Choose a preset or quality target that suits your storage and playback devices, then encode again. A smaller file requires another conversion and may reduce detail, so keep the original output until the replacement has been checked.

The file plays on one device but not another

The container, video codec, audio codec, subtitle method, or profile may exceed the second device’s support. Re-encode using a more broadly compatible preset and test a short sample on every important playback target before processing the whole collection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Audio and video are out of sync

Test the source and output at several points. If the problem appears only in the converted file, review the selected tracks and encoding settings, then create a fresh encode. Do not archive an output that fails basic synchronization checks.

Is making a personal copy legal?

There is no worldwide answer. Copyright and anti-circumvention rules depend on the country, the type of work, how the source was obtained, and whether technical protection was bypassed. Owning or possessing a disc is not, by itself, evidence of a universal right to make any desired copy.

United States

U.S. copyright law gives copyright owners exclusive rights, while the Copyright Office’s anti-circumvention regulation lists defined exemptions. Those exemptions are not a blanket personal-copy permission. A reader in the United States should check the current rule and the particular exemption, if any, that could apply to the proposed activity.

Canada

Canada’s Copyright Act includes a personal-use reproduction provision with conditions. The source copy must have been legally obtained, and the provision does not authorize circumventing a technological protection measure. Meeting one condition does not erase the others.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

United Kingdom

The cited U.K. legislation page contains format-shifting language in statutory text but also notes that the personal-copy regulation was quashed by the High Court in 2015. Do not describe that material as a current general right to copy discs.

Everywhere else

Rules differ across jurisdictions and can change. Check the current statute, regulator guidance, or qualified legal advice for your country before copying protected commercial media, sharing files with another person, or using a method that bypasses a technological protection measure. This article explains the technical workflow; it cannot determine your legal entitlement.

A cautious workflow for a mixed collection

  1. Inventory the discs and mark which are CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, personal recordings, and commercial releases.
  2. Confirm that your drive or drives read every format you plan to process.
  3. Set up folders, filenames, metadata rules, and a backup destination.
  4. Extract one CD and verify several tracks before starting a batch.
  5. Open one supported DVD or Blu-ray source in HandBrake, identify the correct title, choose a preset for your target devices, and encode a test file.
  6. Play the test file on each important device and check picture, sound, chapters, and subtitles.
  7. Process the remaining discs using the same documented choices, pausing when a source behaves differently.
  8. Back up finished files and retain the physical discs when you need a future source or when your legal position requires caution.
