You can dictate a prompt into the same text box where you would type it: open the field, start your phone’s keyboard dictation or your computer’s voice-typing feature, speak, review and correct the words, then submit the prompt yourself. The built-in tools on iPhone, Android with Gboard, Windows 11 and Mac let you try this without installing a separate dictation app or buying a microphone.
How dictating a prompt works
Dictation turns speech into editable text. It is different from a voice conversation with an AI: when you dictate, you compose a written prompt by speaking, and the recognized words appear in the input field. In the workflows described here, dictation does not automatically mean the prompt has been sent. Check the field, make corrections, and use the chat app’s send control when you are ready.
The basic sequence is the same on each platform: focus the prompt field, activate dictation, speak clearly, stop dictation, and inspect the transcription before sending. You can start with the microphone built into your phone or computer. A headset microphone is optional, not a requirement.

If an app has an editable text field, try the phone keyboard or operating-system dictation feature while that field is active. The feature turns speech into text, but it does not decide whether your prompt is complete, accurate or ready to submit. Leave time to proofread, especially if the request includes precise constraints.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Dictation can be useful when typing is inconvenient, when you want to compose a longer request, or when speaking is more accessible for you. It is not necessarily hands-free from start to finish: you may need to activate a control, correct text, and tap or click Send. If you need fully hands-free operation, check the accessibility and voice-control options available on your particular device rather than assuming dictation alone will control every step.
Dictate a prompt on iPhone
Turn on Dictation and speak into the prompt field
- Open Settings > General > Keyboard and turn on Enable Dictation.
- Open the app where you want to write the prompt and tap its text field. The onscreen keyboard should appear.
- Tap the keyboard’s Dictate button, then speak your prompt.
- Tap the Dictate button again to stop, say “Stop dictation,” or wait for dictation to stop after 30 seconds of silence.
- Read the inserted text. Correct any mistakes, then submit the prompt using the app’s send control.
Use speech to format or correct the text
Apple documents spoken punctuation and commands such as “new line” and “new paragraph.” It also documents spelling a word letter by letter and simple select, delete, undo and redo commands. These can help when the prompt includes a term that speech recognition did not catch, or when you want to put instructions on separate lines. The exact result can depend on what you say and the app or field you are using, so check the text rather than assuming a command was interpreted correctly.
For example, you can dictate the task first, pause, and then add background or constraints as a separate sentence or paragraph. Speak punctuation when you want a clear sentence boundary, and use a line-break command only if you want the prompt visually divided. If a spoken editing command has an unexpected effect, use the keyboard to repair the text instead of repeating the command blindly.
Know what may happen to dictated content
Apple says Dictation processes speech on the iPhone in many languages without an internet connection. That is not a guarantee that every language or every dictation-related action works offline. Apple also notes that text dictated into a search field may be sent to the search engine. A prompt field is not necessarily a search field, but the destination app still handles the text you choose to submit.
Apple’s Keyboard settings indicate whether audio and transcripts are processed on-device. When they are not, Apple says dictated content is sent to and processed on Apple servers and is not stored unless you opt into Improve Siri and Dictation. Check the setting on the iPhone you are using; do not infer the processing method from another person’s phone or from the fact that basic dictation worked without a connection once.
Dictate a prompt on Android with Gboard
Start voice typing
- Open the AI chat or other destination app and tap its prompt field.
- On the Gboard keyboard, tap the microphone.
- Speak the prompt and watch the field for the recognized text.
- When you finish, stop voice typing if needed, review and edit the prompt, and submit it from the app.
To enable Gboard’s advanced voice-typing options, open Gboard settings > Voice typing. Google documents commands including “Delete last word,” “Clear,” “Send,” “Next” and “Stop.” Voice commands may produce an action rather than literal text, so review the field to confirm what happened. Do not rely on “Send” as a substitute for checking the prompt first.
If the microphone is not visible, first confirm that Gboard is the keyboard currently open, then look in its Voice typing settings. The available controls can depend on the device, language and keyboard version; a feature shown in instructions may not be present on every Android phone. You can still use the standard microphone control if it is available, without assuming you need advanced voice typing.

Understand advanced voice typing’s editing exception
Google says advanced voice typing keeps spoken text on the device except when you use “Fix it” or detailed edits. Detailed editing is documented for Pixel 8 and later in English (US). For detailed edits, Google says the voice-command transcript and the full text in the field are sent to its servers for processing, although it says it does not store audio or text on its servers. Device, language and keyboard-version support can vary, so an option described in Google’s help may not appear on every Android phone.
This distinction matters if you are dictating sensitive information or correcting a long prompt by voice. Basic voice typing and detailed correction do not necessarily follow the same processing path. If you are uncertain which feature is active, review Gboard’s current settings and Google’s explanation for that feature before using it for confidential content.
Use Voice Typing on Windows 11
Start dictation with the keyboard shortcut
- Connect or select a microphone that is available to the app, then click inside the prompt field.
- Press Windows logo key + H to open Windows 11 Voice Typing.
- Speak the prompt. Check the text in the field as it appears.
- Stop voice typing using its on-screen control, review and correct the prompt, then submit it in the app.
Windows 11 calls its dictation interface Voice Typing. Microsoft says the feature uses online speech recognition, so it requires network connectivity for recognition. Contributing voice clips is optional; using Voice Typing does not mean you have agreed to contribute clips.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Before dictating, make sure the intended microphone is connected and available to the app. If you have more than one input device, such as a built-in microphone and a headset, check which one Windows or the app is using. If the text does not appear, confirm that the prompt field still has focus and that the computer has a network connection, since this feature uses online recognition.

Microsoft says Voice Access replaced Windows Speech Recognition on Windows 11 version 22H2 and later in September 2024. Instructions for older Windows Speech Recognition controls may therefore not match a current Windows 11 computer. For the workflow in this guide, use Windows + H to open Voice Typing.
Voice Typing is the dictation control discussed here; Voice Access is a separate feature name in current Windows guidance. If an older tutorial describes a different control or setup, check its Windows version before following it. The change does not make older directions universally wrong for every older system, but they may not describe what you see on a current Windows 11 installation.
Dictate a prompt on a Mac
Enable Dictation and choose how to start it
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation and enable Dictation.
- Click the prompt field in the destination app.
- Start Dictation using the microphone key if your keyboard has one, your configured Dictation shortcut, or Edit > Start Dictation.
- Speak the prompt, then stop with Escape, the microphone key or the shortcut. Dictation also stops after 30 seconds without detected speech.
- Review and correct the transcription before submitting it.
Check the microphone and formatting
If the Mac is listening to the wrong microphone, open Keyboard settings and select the intended microphone source. A built-in microphone is sufficient to try dictation; an external microphone is optional. Dictate punctuation or say “new line” or “new paragraph” where supported, and verify that the text is laid out as intended.
If you do not see a microphone key, use the Dictation shortcut configured on your Mac or the menu command Edit > Start Dictation. Do not assume every keyboard has the same dedicated key. After starting, keep the destination text field active and check the words as they appear; if the focus moved to another field, stop and select the prompt box again.

Which dictation method should you use?
There is no universally best option established by the platform documentation: the available languages, controls and processing differ, and the sources do not provide a controlled accuracy comparison. Choose the built-in method for your device first, then consider the factors below if privacy, network access, editing or hands-free use matters.
For a quick choice, start with the keyboard or operating-system feature already available on your device: iPhone Dictation, Gboard’s microphone, Windows 11 Voice Typing or Mac Dictation. If you need offline use, check the specific language and processing notes for that platform rather than relying on a broad label. If you need a particular spoken editing command, confirm that it is documented for your device and supported language. If the prompt is confidential, check both dictation processing and the destination app’s handling of the submitted text.
| Device or workflow | How to start | Processing and connection notes | Availability notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone keyboard Dictation | Tap the keyboard’s Dictate button | Apple says processing occurs on the iPhone in many languages without internet; Keyboard settings indicate whether audio and transcripts are processed on-device or on Apple servers. | Processing and language support vary; dictated text in a search field may be sent to the search engine. |
| Android with Gboard | Tap the keyboard microphone | Google says advanced voice typing keeps spoken text on-device except for “Fix it” and detailed edits. Detailed edits send the voice-command transcript and full field text for processing. | Depends on device, language and keyboard version; detailed editing is documented for Pixel 8 and later in English (US). |
| Windows 11 Voice Typing | Press Windows logo key + H | Microsoft says it uses online speech recognition. | Make sure the desired microphone is connected and available to the app. |
| Mac Dictation | Use the microphone key, configured shortcut, or Edit > Start Dictation | Keyboard settings indicate whether audio and transcripts are processed on-device; otherwise Apple says content is sent to Apple servers. | Language and region availability varies; the microphone source can be selected in Keyboard settings. |
| VS Code Chat dictation | Use the Chat microphone button or keyboard shortcut | On supported desktop platforms, recognition is local and offline after the speech model is downloaded. The web client streams audio to Microsoft AI voice service. | The feature is experimental; the web client requires network connectivity and GitHub sign-in. |
These are differences in documented features, not a ranking of speech recognition quality. The sources do not establish an accuracy percentage or prove that one platform is faster or more reliable than another. Your choice may also depend on language support, whether your device has the relevant control, and whether you are comfortable with that feature’s processing method.
For any platform, check the current settings and the destination app’s own privacy terms before dictating confidential material. Privacy depends on both the dictation feature and what the app does with the prompt after you submit it. A built-in feature can avoid the cost of a separate dictation app or microphone, but “built in” does not mean every form of processing is offline or that every destination app treats data the same way.

Dictate into an AI chat field without sending too soon
Most of the time, you can tap or click the chat’s input box and use the operating system or keyboard dictation feature described above. Dictation inserts recognized words into a text field; the separate act of submitting a prompt is controlled by the destination app. Confirm the field still contains the complete prompt before pressing its send button.
This is useful to remember if the prompt is long or has several requirements. After dictation stops, scan the beginning and end as well as the middle: the task, context, requested format and any “do not” instruction can all be altered by a recognition error. If you need to revise a phrase, edit the text first and submit only after the final version is visible in the field.
VS Code Chat is a documented app-specific example
VS Code documents dictation in its Chat input using a microphone button or keyboard shortcut. Its documentation says dictated text is inserted without submitting the request. On supported desktop platforms, VS Code downloads a speech model and then recognizes speech locally and offline. The VS Code web client instead streams audio to Microsoft AI voice service and requires a network connection and GitHub sign-in. VS Code describes this built-in feature as experimental, so its controls may change.
Those details apply to VS Code’s documented workflow, not automatically to every AI chat tool. A different app may offer its own microphone control or voice mode, and may handle audio differently. Unless the app explicitly documents otherwise, use the phone or computer’s dictation control to place editable text in the prompt field, then submit it yourself.
Make spoken prompts easier to review
- Speak in short, complete instructions. Pause between the task, context and constraints so you can spot missing or merged phrases in the transcript.
- Say punctuation and layout commands where supported. Spoken punctuation, “new line” and “new paragraph” can make a multi-part prompt easier to inspect.
- Review high-risk terms carefully. Names, numbers, acronyms and technical words are easy places to miss recognition errors. Correct them before sending.
- Use a microphone that is available to the app. Start with the built-in microphone; if you are using an external one, check the system’s selected input when dictation does not respond as expected.
- Keep dictation and submission separate in your mind. Seeing text appear is not the same as confirming that it is correct or sending it.
Consider dictating the prompt in chunks rather than trying to speak every instruction in one uninterrupted run. You might say the main request, check the transcript, and then add a constraint or a formatting requirement. This gives you a natural chance to catch a misplaced word, missing negation or number before it becomes part of a longer prompt. It is still the same text prompt; the chunks are simply a way to compose and check it.
Use explicit punctuation and layout commands only where your platform supports them, and verify the result afterward. Speech recognition may render punctuation as a character or treat a phrase as an editing command. If a specific layout is important, keyboard edits after dictation can be simpler than trying to control every detail by voice.
Troubleshoot when voice typing does not work
The microphone control is missing
On iPhone, check Settings > General > Keyboard > Enable Dictation. On Gboard, open its settings and check Voice typing. On Mac, check Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation. Windows 11 Voice Typing opens with Windows logo key + H. Labels and availability can vary by software version, device and language.
On Android, check that Gboard is the active keyboard; controls from another keyboard may be different. On a Mac, try the configured shortcut or menu command if the keyboard has no microphone key. If you are following directions for a different operating-system version, device or language, the control may be named differently or unavailable.
Nothing appears when you speak
Confirm the intended prompt field has focus and that the app can access the microphone. On Mac, select the correct input in Keyboard settings if the wrong microphone is active. On Windows 11, verify the microphone is connected and available to the app; Voice Typing uses online recognition, so also check the network connection.
Also check that dictation actually started, rather than assuming that opening the keyboard or pressing a shortcut began recognition. Look for the dictation interface or microphone indicator, then speak a short test phrase. If it appears in the wrong place, stop, click or tap the intended prompt field and start again. For a feature that depends on network recognition, a disconnected device can prevent transcription even when the microphone itself works.

The transcription contains errors
Pause and correct the field rather than sending a prompt with uncertain wording. Re-speak a phrase clearly if that is quicker, and pay particular attention to names, numbers, acronyms and technical terms. Apple documents spelling words letter by letter and basic text-editing commands on iPhone, which can help with isolated corrections. No accuracy percentage or comparative benchmark is established for these platform workflows.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA single misplaced word can change the meaning of an instruction, particularly a number, a name or a negative such as “do not.” Review key requirements against what you intended to say, not just whether the paragraph looks complete. If the term is difficult to recognize, dictate the surrounding sentence and type the exact term manually.
A spoken command edits text instead of appearing literally
Some phrases are recognized as commands. Gboard, for example, documents “Clear,” “Delete last word,” “Next” and “Stop,” while Apple documents punctuation, line breaks and simple editing commands. Inspect the field after using a command. If you meant to include the words themselves as part of a prompt, type or rephrase them so they are not mistaken for an editing instruction.
You cannot find the control shown in an older guide
Check that the guide applies to your operating-system version and keyboard. In particular, Microsoft says Voice Access replaced Windows Speech Recognition on Windows 11 22H2 and later in September 2024; Windows 11’s Voice Typing shortcut is Windows + H. Google also notes that Gboard features vary by device, language and keyboard version, so not every phone will show every advanced option.
You are unsure whether dictation is private or needs internet
Do not assume all dictation is processed the same way. Windows 11 Voice Typing uses online speech recognition. Apple’s settings indicate whether audio and transcripts are processed on-device, and Google describes specific exceptions for advanced voice-typing correction and detailed edits. Check the current feature settings and the destination app’s privacy terms before speaking sensitive content. A connection requirement for recognition is also separate from the app’s connection requirement for sending the completed prompt.
Frequently asked questions
Can I talk instead of type in an AI chat?
Usually you can dictate into the chat’s editable prompt field using your device’s keyboard or operating-system dictation. That creates text; it is not necessarily a voice conversation and does not necessarily submit the prompt. Review the transcription and use the app’s send control when ready. An app may also offer its own microphone or voice mode, which can behave differently.
Does dictating a prompt send it automatically?
Not necessarily. Dictation and submission are separate steps in the general workflow here, and VS Code specifically documents that its Chat dictation inserts text without submitting the request. Check the destination app’s behavior, then review the field and submit deliberately.
Do I need to install an app or buy a microphone?
No separate dictation app or microphone purchase is required to try the built-in workflows described here. Use the phone or computer’s built-in microphone to start. A headset microphone is optional; if you use an external microphone, make sure it is connected and selected or available to the app.
Can I dictate while offline?
It depends on the platform, language and feature. Apple says iPhone Dictation processes speech on-device in many languages without an internet connection. Windows 11 Voice Typing uses online speech recognition. VS Code’s supported desktop workflow recognizes speech locally after downloading a speech model, while its web client requires a connection. Check the exact language and feature rather than assuming offline support from the platform name alone.

Can I dictate punctuation, line breaks or corrections?
Some platforms support spoken punctuation and formatting commands. Apple documents punctuation, “new line,” “new paragraph,” spelling a word letter by letter and simple editing commands on iPhone. Mac supports punctuation and line-break commands where available. Gboard documents voice commands including “Delete last word,” “Clear,” “Send,” “Next” and “Stop.” Availability and results can vary, so inspect the field after using a command.
Which option is most accurate?
The platform documentation does not provide a controlled accuracy comparison or an accuracy percentage for these workflows, so there is no supported universal winner. Language, device, feature availability and the words in your prompt can all matter. Review the recognized text before sending, especially names, numbers and technical terms.
