If the Xbox app closes while you download a game on Windows, first confirm that the app itself is crashing. A download that stalls or shows an error while the app remains open is a different problem; a game that closes after you launch it is different again. Identify which happens before choosing a fix, because the available Xbox Support pages cover those separate situations.
Identify what is actually failing
Watch what happens at the moment the problem occurs and note the exact error text or code. “Crashes when downloading” can describe three different symptoms:
- The Xbox app closes or stops responding during the download: this is an app crash.
- The Xbox app stays open, but the download errors, stalls, or stops: this is a download failure, not necessarily an app crash.
- The download finishes, but the game closes or freezes after launch: this is a game problem rather than a download or app crash.
Also establish whether the problem affects one game or every download, whether it occurs immediately or after progress begins, and which Windows version and Xbox app version you are using. Those details help distinguish a game-specific issue from a problem affecting downloads more broadly; they do not, by themselves, identify the cause.

Choose the troubleshooting path that matches the symptom
If the app closes during a download
Start with Xbox Support’s troubleshooting page for downloadable content on Windows 10. The page is specifically about Windows downloads, but its current detailed instructions and supported Windows versions could not be verified here. Check the page for steps that match your Windows environment before applying them.

If the app remains open but a download fails
Use the same Xbox Support downloadable-content troubleshooting resource, and compare its guidance with the exact error or code shown in the app. A stalled or failed download should not be treated as proof that the app has crashed.
If a game closes or freezes after it launches
Use Xbox Support’s separate resources for troubleshooting games on Windows 10 and for a game that freezes or stops responding on Windows 10. Those topics concern problems during gameplay, not the Xbox app closing while it downloads.

What to record before trying a fix
- Your Windows version and Xbox app version.
- The exact error wording or code, if one appears.
- Whether the issue affects one game or all downloads.
- Whether the app exits, stays open with a failed download, or the game closes after launch.
- Whether the problem happens immediately or only after download progress begins.
Use these observations to choose the relevant support path and to describe the problem accurately if you need further help. The symptom alone does not establish a storage-capacity or hardware fault; consider storage only if you separately confirm that available space is low.
