An SFC report involving curl.exe and a Windows Update revision (UBR) that appears unchanged do not, by themselves, prove a shared problem. Start with the exact SFC result and servicing logs, then use Microsoft’s general repair sequence—DISM, SFC, and a Windows Update retry—to investigate system-file corruption. Check update applicability and installation evidence separately before drawing conclusions about the UBR.
What these two symptoms do—and do not—tell you
“SFC fails on curl.exe” is not precise enough to identify what happened. SFC scans protected system files and can replace corrupted files with cached copies, but the exact result matters: for example, whether it found integrity violations, repaired files, or could not repair some files. The relevant [SR] entry in CBS.log can show which file and component version SFC reported and what repair it attempted.
A UBR that seems unchanged is a separate observation. It does not establish that the component-store issue caused an update failure, or even that the update failed to install. The available Microsoft UBR example concerns servicing a Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) image; it does not diagnose an installed Windows operating system’s registry value. Investigate the SFC finding and the update history as distinct issues unless the logs provide evidence connecting them.

- Open Command Prompt as an administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt if it appears.
- Repair the online Windows image: run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand wait for it to complete. - Scan protected system files: run
sfc /scannowand allow the scan to reach 100%. - Retry the affected Windows Update and record whether it installs, fails with an error, or requests a restart.
Microsoft says DISM repair works best when it can connect to Microsoft Update to fetch missing or corrupted files. If online repair files are unavailable, Microsoft documents alternate sources, including a working Windows installation or files on a network location, USB drive, or DVD. The source must be suitable for the installed Windows version; Microsoft’s example specifies a source computer running the same OS version. Do not select an arbitrary or mismatched image. Removable media is optional for an appropriate offline source, not a requirement for the normal online repair.
If DISM does not complete successfully, preserve its result and review CBS.log rather than assuming SFC’s curl.exe report explains the failure. Microsoft also recommends examining servicing logs when a repair fails.

Read the SFC result and the CBS log
Record the complete final message from sfc /scannow, not just the filename. If SFC says it could not repair one or more files, Microsoft’s support guidance uses CBS.log to extract and review SFC-specific entries. The exact [SR] entry is the useful evidence: it can clarify the reported path, component version, and repair status.
Do not treat the filename alone as a curl.exe-specific diagnosis. The cited Microsoft guidance describes SFC’s general protected-file repair process; it does not provide a special curl.exe repair procedure or establish that curl.exe is responsible for a UBR that does not change.

Check whether the update actually applies and installed
Before interpreting a displayed revision as proof of corruption, collect the information needed to identify the target update and the device’s servicing state:
- Windows edition, release/version, full OS build, and processor architecture for each affected device.
- The exact update KB number, Windows Update error code, and update-history status.
- Whether Windows is waiting for a restart and whether the update was retried after restarting.
- The exact SFC completion message and relevant
[SR]entries fromCBS.log. - Servicing evidence in
CBS.logand client diagnostics inWindowsUpdate.log.
Microsoft’s update troubleshooting guidance recommends checking whether an update is already installed or superseded, whether it applies to the device’s Windows version and processor architecture, and whether prerequisite updates are present. For deployed devices, also check whether the deployment is paused and which update service the device scans. These checks help distinguish availability or scanning problems from download, applicability, installation, rollback, and post-install reporting issues.

Use each log for the question it can answer
CBS.log: servicing-stack evidence, including insight into update installation and SFC-specific entries.WindowsUpdate.log: Windows Update client trace diagnostics. The generated log is a static snapshot; generate it again when you need to capture current traces.
Compare the full OS build and update-installation evidence rather than relying on a displayed UBR alone. Keep the excerpts and timestamps tied to the same device and update attempt so that an SFC result from one system is not confused with servicing evidence from another.

Keep UBR examples in the right scope
Microsoft’s documented UBR example is for a WinRE image: when adding an update to that image, its ServicePackBuild should be at least the UBR of the added update. The example gives Windows 11 version 22H2’s November security update as UBR 819 in full version 22621.819. That illustrates how the revision is compared in the WinRE servicing context; it is not evidence about why an installed Windows OS registry value has or has not changed.

Release-note builds are also time- and version-specific, not universal targets for every computer. Microsoft’s September 8, 2026 release page lists Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 builds 26100.9445 and 26200.9445. Its September 14, 2026 out-of-band page lists cumulative update KB5129195 for those releases, with builds 26100.9457 and 26200.9457. These are dated examples; compare a device only with updates that apply to its edition and servicing channel.
Edition can affect eligibility too. Microsoft states that Windows 11 version 24H2 Home and Pro editions reach end of updates on October 13, 2026, while Enterprise and Education editions remain supported until October 12, 2027. Confirm the edition and support status before treating the absence of a newer revision as a failed update.
What to do if the cause is still unclear
If the repair sequence does not resolve the issue, the available evidence does not support attributing the unchanged UBR to the curl.exe SFC finding. Preserve the exact SFC and DISM results, the device’s edition/version/build/architecture, the affected KB and error code, restart status, update history, and relevant current log excerpts. Those details let a support technician distinguish a file-repair problem from update eligibility, scanning, installation, rollback, or reporting behavior.
