Capacitors can cause excessive ripple, output droop, noise, and intermittent resets, but those symptoms do not prove a capacitor is bad. A reliable diagnosis combines timed input/output voltage checks, correctly configured oscilloscope measurements, load comparisons, and (only when de-energized and safe) component inspection. Upstream voltage disturbances, changing loads, regulator-loop instability, layout parasitics, and measurement errors can produce the same behavior.
This guide shows how to separate those possibilities and how to select a replacement capacitor only after the circuit requirements are known.
What capacitor-related instability looks like
In a switching power supply, the output capacitor network works with the inductor and control loop to hold the rail near its target voltage. The waveform you observe is affected by capacitance, equivalent series resistance (ESR), equivalent series inductance, inductor current, switching frequency, layout, and the exact point where you probe. A capacitor with increased ESR can create a larger voltage step when ripple current flows, while reduced capacitance can increase low-frequency droop and transient error.

Ripple current also heats a capacitor through its ESR. In aluminum electrolytic capacitors, heat and electrical stress accelerate electrolyte loss and aging. That makes degradation plausible when a supply becomes noisy or unstable, but it is not unique evidence: a marginal control loop, an overloaded rail, or an upstream input drop can look identical at the load.

- Additional Tips - The following incorrect operations may cause the multimeter not to show results: Firstly, the plugs of test leads are not fully inserted or not inserted into the correct sockets. Secondly, the manual rotary switch is not placed in the correct position. In addition, this meter can not test all AC Current and below 100mV AC Voltage. Please check the user manual carefully before measurement.

- Symptoms may appear only after warm-up, at a particular load, during startup, or when another subsystem switches on.
- A rail can measure correctly with a multimeter and still contain short ripple bursts or oscillation that reset digital logic.
- A visibly swollen or leaking capacitor strengthens suspicion, but a capacitor can be electrically degraded with no visible change.
- A single oscilloscope screenshot is not conclusive unless the probe, grounding, bandwidth, time scale, load, and measurement point are appropriate for the circuit.
Safety before opening or probing a supply
Disconnect power and allow the circuit to discharge before touching components, moving probes, or measuring resistance or capacitance. Mains-referenced primary circuits can retain hazardous voltage after unplugging. Do not probe an energized primary side unless you are trained for that work, have the appropriate isolated equipment, and are following the manufacturer’s service procedure. The procedure below is aimed primarily at low-voltage outputs and de-energized inspection; it is not a substitute for qualified repair practice.
Never short a capacitor to discharge it with a screwdriver. Use the discharge method and waiting time specified by the service documentation, then verify with a properly rated meter. If the supply is part of safety-critical, medical, industrial, or high-energy equipment, stop at non-invasive measurements and refer the repair to an appropriately qualified technician.
Use a diagnostic sequence instead of guessing
1. Record exactly when the fault occurs
Write down the rail or output that fails, its nominal value, the connected load, ambient conditions, warm-up time, and what “instability” means in practice: visible flicker, a reset, an alarm, an audible change, a measured droop, or an over-voltage shutdown. Note whether the event occurs at startup, only under high load, or unpredictably after minutes of operation.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchCompare the supply’s specified input and output ranges with the actual installation. A rail that is inside a broad nominal range may still violate the tolerance, transient, sequencing, or minimum-load requirements of the equipment it powers. Record enough context that another person can reproduce the load and timing.
2. Check the input and output with a multimeter
A digital multimeter is the first check for DC level, polarity, continuity where appropriate, and gross input problems. Measure the source feeding the supply and the suspect output while the system is both idle and loaded. Keep the meter connected long enough to catch warm-up behavior rather than relying on an instant reading.
For an intermittent fault, log the input and output together. Fluke’s troubleshooting example shows why: an upstream AC input drop can trigger a power-supply error even when the supply itself is not the root cause. See Fluke’s multimeter-and-oscilloscope power-supply troubleshooting example.

- If the input falls at the same moment as the output, investigate the source, wiring, connector resistance, protection device, or upstream supply before replacing capacitors.
- If the input remains within specification while the output droops or resets, continue with ripple and load testing.
- If the meter never catches the event, do not treat a normal reading as proof that the rail is healthy.
3. Measure ripple with an oscilloscope
Ripple is the AC component riding on a DC output. Texas Instruments defines output-voltage ripple as “the alternating current (AC) component of the direct current (DC) output voltage.” Read the full measurement discussion in TI’s guide to measuring ripple.
Use a probe and oscilloscope bandwidth appropriate to the rail and switching frequency. Keep the ground connection extremely short; a long alligator lead can act as an antenna and add ringing that is not present at the capacitor. A spring ground or other short connection is usually preferable for small high-frequency signals. Set a repeatable vertical scale, time base, trigger, and bandwidth limit, then capture the rail at a defined test point.
For regulator-input diagnosis, measure at the input capacitor closest to the regulator IC. For output diagnosis, measure at the specified output test point or load terminals, not an arbitrary distant via. Analog Devices explains how probe configuration and location alter observed ripple in its switch-mode power-supply lab measurement article.
- Connect the probe ground with the shortest practical path.
- Set the scope’s bandwidth limit and coupling deliberately; document those settings with the capture.
- Observe startup, steady state, load changes, and the warm-up interval.
- Repeat the measurement at the input capacitor and the output point when trying to distinguish input disturbance from output-network problems.
- Save captures that include the rail value, time scale, load condition, and trigger event.
Do not compare a high-frequency probe artifact with a manufacturer’s low-bandwidth ripple specification as if they were the same quantity. The measured value depends on bandwidth, probe loop area, grounding, and location.
4. Change one condition at a time
Repeat the measurement at several known load levels. If ripple or droop grows sharply with load, compare that behavior with the supply’s rated current, minimum-load requirement, current-limit mode, thermal conditions, and transient specification. If the problem occurs only when a load switches, capture the switching event rather than only the steady-state rail.

5. Check for upstream disturbances and wiring faults
Inspect connectors, fuses, switches, cables, and ground returns for heating, looseness, corrosion, or excessive voltage drop. Measure directly at the supply input while the fault occurs, not only at the source outlet. A source that sags under load, a high-resistance connector, or a protection circuit that intermittently trips can mimic capacitor failure.
Also check whether another converter, motor, relay, radio transmitter, or processor is switching at the same time. Shared impedance can transfer that disturbance to the rail. Keep the input, output, and load observations time-aligned so that a coincident event is not mistaken for a causal one.
6. Inspect components only when de-energized
With power removed and the circuit safely discharged, look for bulging or vented aluminum electrolytic tops, leaked electrolyte, darkened board areas, lifted pads, cracked solder joints, and heat-discolored parts. These findings support a capacitor hypothesis but do not identify every failed part or prove that the capacitor was the original cause of the stress.
In-circuit capacitance or ESR readings can be misleading because parallel capacitors, semiconductor junctions, inductors, and the regulator itself affect the result. A meaningful comparison may require isolating one terminal or removing the part, which should be done only with the correct repair skills and documentation. The available technical guidance does not establish one universal ESR pass/fail number for all capacitors or supplies. Use the component maker’s data, the equipment service manual, or a known-good reference from the same design.
What each measurement method can and cannot tell you
| Method | Reveals | Limitations | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digital multimeter | Average DC input/output voltage, polarity, continuity-style checks, and slow changes | May average away switching ripple, short dropouts, and brief overshoot; a normal reading at one instant does not clear an intermittent fault | Establishing basic operating levels and tracking input versus output over time |
| Oscilloscope | Ripple waveform, switching-related spikes, oscillation, startup behavior, load transients, and dropouts | Probe grounding, bandwidth, trigger, and test-point selection can create or hide apparent ripple | Correlating rail behavior with load and input events |
| Longer-term logging | Warm-up drift, periodic events, and failures that occur minutes or hours later | Requires suitable logging hardware and a trigger or sampling rate that will not miss short events | Intermittent faults that a short bench observation cannot reproduce |
Use the applicable rail or supply specification for acceptance. There is no universal ripple limit that applies to every converter, output voltage, load, or measurement bandwidth.
How capacitors affect ripple and heat
For a switching converter, the inductor supplies changing current while the output capacitor network absorbs part of the AC component. Capacitance influences how much the voltage changes between switching events; ESR adds an approximately instantaneous voltage step proportional to ripple current; parasitic inductance contributes faster spikes and ringing. The total waveform is therefore a property of the complete power stage and layout, not of capacitance alone.

Ripple current through ESR produces heat. As an aluminum electrolytic warms, electrolyte loss can increase and its electrical characteristics can drift, creating a feedback path in which higher ESR causes more heat and more stress. Analog Devices’ discussion of effective capacitor ripple current shows how current and loss can be evaluated in a design context: Using FFT Analysis Function of LTspice to Measure Effective Capacitor Ripple Current.
Capacitor count and size are also design choices. A converter may use several capacitors in parallel to share ripple current, control impedance across frequency, or satisfy transient requirements. Removing one, changing its technology, or substituting a different ESR can alter the control-loop behavior even when the printed capacitance value is unchanged.
Do not overlook regulator-loop instability
A power converter can oscillate because its feedback loop is insufficiently damped or because the output network no longer matches the compensation design. A capacitor with a different ESR, a missing capacitor, altered layout, or an unexpected load can move the loop toward instability. Analog Devices engineer Henry Zhang summarizes the risk: “An unstable or marginally stable power supply can oscillate and cause increased ripples, voltage, current, and thermal stresses, and possibly damage the supply and its critical load devices.” The complete explanation is in Understand Power Supply Loop Stability and Loop Compensation – Part 1: Basic Concepts and Tools.
Engineering teams may evaluate loop response with a Bode plot or injection measurement. That is a specialized design-qualification technique, not a requirement for every field diagnosis. For a general repair, first verify the input, output, load, probe setup, and component condition. Escalate to loop analysis when the waveform shows sustained oscillation, the component values match documentation, and simpler causes have been excluded.

High ripple that increases with load
Possible explanations include increased capacitor ESR, insufficient capacitance, an overloaded converter, current-limit operation, inductor saturation, wiring drop, or a load transient. Compare the waveform at the input capacitor and output point, then check the rated current and thermal condition. A load-dependent result is evidence for a system interaction, not a capacitor verdict by itself.

Capture the rail at the device pins or specified load point during the reset. Look for short negative dips, positive overshoot, bursts of oscillation, and disturbances synchronized with another load. Verify probe grounding before drawing conclusions. A DMM’s stable number can coexist with a brief event that is long enough to reset logic but too short to display.

Fault appears only after warm-up
Log input, output, and temperature-related timing from startup through the failure. Thermal increase can raise capacitor loss, change semiconductor behavior, expose a cracked solder joint, or trigger upstream protection. If the symptom disappears after cooling, reproduce it under controlled conditions rather than replacing parts based only on the visual appearance of a capacitor.
Visible bulge or leakage
Power down, document the part and surrounding damage, and treat it as a strong reason for controlled component-level diagnosis. Check whether a nearby hot component, reversed polarity, excessive voltage, or ripple-current overload could have caused the failure. Replacing the visibly damaged capacitor without finding the stress source can lead to another failure.
Selecting a replacement capacitor
Choose a replacement against the original schematic, bill of materials, service documentation, and manufacturer data. Capacitance is only one requirement.
| Requirement | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Capacitance | Nominal value and allowed tolerance at the circuit’s operating conditions | Changes ripple, transient response, startup behavior, and loop characteristics |
| Voltage rating | At least the design requirement, including expected transients and derating guidance | Insufficient rating can cause leakage, heating, or catastrophic failure |
| Polarity | Correct polarized, bipolar, film, ceramic, or other technology | Reversing a polarized part can damage the capacitor and the board |
| ESR and impedance | Frequency-dependent impedance and the ESR range expected by the regulator | A generic “low-ESR” part can destabilize a loop designed for a different damping characteristic |
| Ripple-current rating | Allowable RMS ripple at the relevant temperature and frequency | Exceeding it increases internal heating and shortens life |
| Temperature and lifetime | Rated temperature, endurance, and expected hot-spot conditions | Thermal stress strongly affects electrolytic aging |
| Mechanical fit | Diameter, height, lead spacing, mounting, and clearance | A part that does not fit can be unsafe or introduce excessive lead inductance |
Do not assume that a larger capacitance, a higher voltage rating, or a “low ESR” label is automatically better. Those changes can affect startup current, compensation, damping, ripple sharing, and physical clearances. Analog Devices discusses output-capacitor quantity and size trade-offs in How to Minimize the Number, and Size, of Output Capacitors in Your Power Supply Design.
A practical decision checklist
- Have you defined the exact rail, load, timing, and failure symptom?
- Did you measure the source input at the supply terminals during the event?
- Did you measure the output under idle, normal, and changing-load conditions?
- Was the oscilloscope probe grounded with a short, controlled connection?
- Did you measure at the input capacitor nearest the regulator when evaluating regulator input ripple?
- Did you check warm-up behavior and capture intermittent events?
- Have you considered upstream drops, wiring, load transients, loop instability, layout, and probe pickup?
- Was visual or component testing performed only after safe de-energization?
- Does the proposed replacement match capacitance, voltage, polarity, ESR, ripple current, temperature/lifetime, and package requirements?
When to stop troubleshooting and get specialist help
Stop and refer the repair when the primary side is mains-referenced, stored energy is high, the equipment is safety-critical, board damage is extensive, or the required service documentation is unavailable. Also escalate when measurements indicate sustained loop oscillation or when replacing a capacitor would require changing compensation components. A qualified technician can use isolated instruments, controlled loads, component analyzers, and design documentation that are not appropriate to improvise on a live supply.
The most defensible diagnosis is conditional: capacitor degradation is supported when correctly measured ripple, load behavior, thermal timing, and component data agree, while input and measurement errors are excluded. Replace the part only when its electrical, thermal, mechanical, and control-loop requirements are known.
