If you can’t connect to a network drive, first check that the computer hosting the shared folder is on and reachable from your network. Then verify the exact share path and your access rights. On Windows 10 and Windows 11, these checks help distinguish a disconnected host from a discovery, credential, or permissions problem—issues that require different fixes.
This guide covers connecting to an existing shared folder from Windows 10 or Windows 11, primarily on a local network. A workplace share accessed from home may require an organization-approved VPN or other remote-access setup; ask your IT team what is supported. Mapping a network drive assigns a drive letter to a shared folder, making it easier to open in File Explorer.
Start with the symptom
Before changing settings, note what happens when you open the mapped drive or enter its path. Record the exact error and whether the problem affects one account, one computer, or multiple people. That information helps narrow the cause:
- The computer or share is missing from Network: Check network reachability and Network Discovery. A device appearing in this view does not prove that you have permission to open its folders.
- A known path does not open: Confirm the host is available and that the path is correct.
- Windows repeatedly asks for credentials, or says access is denied: Check which account you are using and ask the share owner or administrator to confirm your permissions.
- The drive works until you sign out or restart: Check the reconnect option and whether the network or server is available when Windows attempts to reconnect.
Check the network and the host
For a local shared folder, confirm that both your computer and the computer or server hosting it are connected to the intended network. Make sure the host is powered on and the network connection is working. If you use Wi-Fi, verify that you joined the expected network. If you use Ethernet, check that the cable is securely seated at the computer and the network device; Microsoft’s Ethernet troubleshooting guidance covers additional wired-connection checks.

A workplace share may be available only on the organization’s network. When working remotely, use only the remote-access method your employer approves, and ask IT whether that share is meant to be available off-site. A cable or Wi-Fi check cannot resolve a wrong path, missing permissions, or incompatible server configuration.
Verify the share path
Ask the share owner or IT for the exact folder path. A Windows network share commonly uses a UNC path such as \servershare. Enter the supplied path as given rather than guessing a computer name or relying on a Network browsing result. If the path used to work but now fails, ask whether the share still exists and whether the host is available.

Network Discovery determines whether Windows can find and display devices in File Explorer’s Network view. It is different from permission to open a particular share. If Windows reports that discovery is off, enable Network Discovery and file sharing only on a network profile you trust, such as an appropriate private home network, and follow the Windows prompt. Do not enable sharing indiscriminately on a public network.

If discovery settings will not stay enabled, Microsoft identifies stopped dependency services and firewall restrictions as possible causes. For the documented Windows case, the services include DNS Client, Function Discovery Resource Publication, SSDP Discovery, and UPnP Device Host. Check that the needed discovery exception is allowed for the applicable network profile, or ask IT to review it on a managed computer. Do not turn off the firewall wholesale. Confirm credentials and permissions
If Windows asks for a password repeatedly or returns an access-denied message, verify that you are signing in with the intended account and account format. Then ask the share owner or administrator to check both share-level and folder permissions. Being able to find a computer on the network does not grant access to its files. Do not share credentials or weaken access controls as a test.

Some share types have distinct authentication rules. Microsoft documents a specific “User has not been authenticated” case for a WebDAV share, and separate restrictions for administrative shares on Windows computers. For those cases, use the applicable guidance—WebDAV mapped-share authentication or administrative-share access—with administrator help rather than applying an ordinary SMB password fix or an unreviewed registry workaround.
Fix a drive that disconnects after sign-in
When mapping a drive in File Explorer, choose an unused drive letter and enter the exact folder path. Select Reconnect at sign-in if you intend the drive to persist across sign-ins. If it still fails after a restart, check whether the host and network are available when Windows tries to reconnect. For a work share, VPN timing, a logon script, or Group Policy may affect the result; ask IT to investigate rather than changing system settings yourself.

Some documented mapped-drive problems are limited to particular Windows versions or application contexts. Microsoft’s article about a reconnection issue applies specifically to Windows 10, version 1809; it is not a universal fix for current connection failures. A separate issue can make mapped drives unavailable to an elevated application when User Account Control is configured to prompt for credentials. When to involve an administrator
If the host is reachable, the path is confirmed, and permissions appear correct but the connection still fails, the cause may involve name resolution, network transport, protocol negotiation, or a service on the client or server. SMB is commonly used for remote file access, but diagnosing protocol-level problems may require information from both ends. Microsoft’s SMB troubleshooting guidance and advanced SMB guide cover administrator-level investigation, including collecting network traces from client and server for complex cases.
When escalating, provide the exact error, when it occurred, the share path, whether you were on the local network or using approved remote access, and whether other users can connect. Do not include passwords. Avoid enabling SMBv1 as a routine compatibility fix: Microsoft says it is no longer installed by default and advises against casual use. Ask IT to assess the server and protocol configuration instead.
