Lines on a Lenovo laptop can come from the built-in display path or a broader graphics problem. Start by checking whether they appear during startup, then compare the laptop screen with a known-good external monitor. Those checks help narrow the cause, but they do not identify a failed component with certainty. The right next step depends on your exact model, its supported diagnostics, and whether the lines persist outside the operating system.
What to check before troubleshooting
Note whether the lines are horizontal or vertical, constant or intermittent, and whether the laptop was recently struck or compressed. Record whether they appear on the Lenovo logo or BIOS screen, before Windows loads, or only after you sign in. These details help support staff assess the problem; none confirms a specific failure by itself.
Disconnect docks and external displays, then restart the laptop and observe its built-in screen. Lenovo’s ideapad guidance recommends removing external-display connections and checking whether the display works during startup: Lenovo ideapad display troubleshooting. Display-mode function keys vary by model, so consult the manual for your laptop rather than relying on a universal shortcut.

Connect a known-good monitor using a port and cable supported by both devices. Check that the cable is firmly connected, and follow Lenovo’s guidance for ideapad display symptoms and display connection troubleshooting.

- Lines appear on both screens: The cause may extend beyond the laptop’s built-in panel. This comparison cannot identify the specific component.
- The external monitor is clear, but the laptop screen has lines: The internal display path becomes a stronger suspect, but the comparison alone does not distinguish the panel from its connection or other hardware.
Not every Lenovo laptop has HDMI. Use a compatible port and cable for the exact laptop and monitor; an external-display connection is a diagnostic aid, not a fix for internal panel damage.
Run Lenovo’s LCD self-test only on supported models
Lenovo describes an LCD self-test for supported ThinkPad, Lenovo Notebook, and ThinkBook models. Check the Lenovo LCD self-test instructions and your model’s hardware maintenance manual before trying it; do not assume every Lenovo laptop supports the procedure.

- Power off the laptop.
- Connect AC power.
- Press Fn, left Ctrl, and the power button together.
On a supported system, the test displays five solid colors across the screen. Lenovo says it lasts about 20 seconds and exits automatically. A normal result indicates the LCD functions normally during this test; it does not rule out intermittent faults or establish that every part of the display system is problem-free.
When to check software and settings
If lines appear only after the operating system loads, or vary between applications, check the model-appropriate display settings and software. Lenovo’s ideapad guidance includes checking BIOS, the video driver, display resolution and color settings, and brightness. Its general display troubleshooting checklist also covers settings, drivers, and different applications.

- Check whether the lines also appear before Windows starts. If they do, software is a less compelling first explanation.
- Use the Lenovo support page for your exact model to identify the appropriate driver or BIOS information; avoid generic driver downloads or an unnecessary BIOS update.
- If the symptom occurs in only one application, check that application’s display behavior before assuming the panel is faulty.
When persistent lines need service
Lenovo maintenance manuals for particular ThinkPad generations list horizontal or vertical lines as a display-assembly service symptom. That guidance is model-specific: the ThinkPad E14 Gen 8 and E16 Gen 4 manual and the ThinkPad L14 Gen 7 and L16 Gen 3 manual do not establish a repair procedure for every Lenovo laptop. The L14/L16 manual also uses an external display in a specified display-error procedure to help distinguish a panel issue from a system-board issue.
If lines persist through startup and ordinary checks, contact Lenovo support or a qualified repair provider. Do not open the laptop or replace the display unless you have the correct service documentation and verified part compatibility for the exact model.

Check warranty and compatibility before paying for a repair
Identify the laptop’s exact model and check its warranty or service options through Lenovo support and warranty information before buying a replacement panel. Lenovo documents a vertical line among LCD damage conditions in its LCD damage guide, but coverage depends on the machine, service plan, region, and cause of damage. No universal coverage decision, replacement part, or repair price applies to all Lenovo laptops.
Avoid pressing, massaging, bending, or heating the screen. Those actions are not a diagnostic procedure and can worsen damage.
