A black phone screen does not, by itself, tell you whether the phone is off, frozen, out of charge, or still running with a display problem. Check for damage and charging issues, then use the restart steps for your exact model. If the phone rings while its screen stays blank, contact an authorized repair center rather than treating it as a routine software glitch.
What a black screen can—and cannot—tell you
The same blank display can result from different problems, including a deeply discharged battery, a frozen phone, an obstruction or damage, or a display fault. Charging behavior, a force restart, and whether the phone rings can help narrow things down, but none of these checks alone confirms the cause.
Start with the checks below in order. If the phone was recently dropped or exposed to liquid, keep that history in mind: physical damage can change what is safe to try, and a black screen after an impact may need professional diagnosis.
Check the display and the phone for visible problems
- Look for cracks, chips, or other visible damage.
- Temporarily remove the case and screen protector in case either is interfering with the display or sensors.
- Check for stickers covering the display or sensors, and clean the screen.
- Inspect the phone, charging adapter, and USB cable for physical or liquid damage before connecting them.
Google Android Help recommends checking for screen damage and obstructions; Samsung Support also advises checking the phone and charging equipment for damage. If you see signs of liquid or impact damage, do not assume that repeatedly charging or restarting the phone will fix it.

Check whether the phone is charging or still responding
- Connect the phone to a compatible charger and cable that you know work, using a working outlet. Make sure the cable is seated properly.
- Check the charging port for lint or debris. Do not force anything into the port.
- If available, try another compatible cable or adapter. A charger and cable are useful for diagnosis, not a guaranteed fix.
- Give the phone time to respond. Samsung notes that its charging indicator can take up to 10 minutes to appear.
- Call the phone from another device, or use Google’s Find Hub, to see whether it rings.
No charging indicator does not prove that the display is broken: a deeply discharged battery may not show a response right away. On the other hand, if the phone rings but the display remains blank, Google Android Help recommends contacting a local authorized repair center. That response suggests the phone is operating at least enough to receive a call, but it does not establish exactly what has failed.
Force-restart the exact phone model
Use the instructions for your phone and generation. Button combinations are not universal, and holding the wrong buttons may do something other than restart the device. Follow the manufacturer’s current support instructions if the steps below do not match your model.

Most Android phones
Google Android Help says most phones can be force-restarted by holding the Power button for about 30 seconds. Its charging and power troubleshooting guidance gives a roughly 35-second hold. Because instructions can differ by manufacturer and device, check your model’s support guidance if this does not work.

iPhone with Face ID
Apple Support’s procedure is to press and quickly release Volume Up, press and quickly release Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. Other iPhone generations use different button combinations; use Apple’s instructions for your specific model.
If the phone restarts and the screen returns, check whether the problem recurs. If it stays blank, continue only with steps that suit your phone and its condition.

Try Android software checks if the display works intermittently
Use safe mode to check for a downloaded app
Google recommends trying safe mode for Android screen problems. If the screen works in safe mode, Google says a downloaded app is the most likely cause. Remove recently downloaded apps one at a time, restarting and checking after each removal, to identify whether one of them is responsible. Safe-mode entry steps vary by device, so consult the manufacturer’s instructions for your model.

A factory reset removes all data from the phone. Google recommends backing up first. Treat a reset as an advanced option for issues that may stem from unwanted settings or third-party software—not as a likely remedy for visible damage or a display that remains blank because of hardware failure. Do not reset unless you understand the data loss and can use the phone’s reset procedure.

When to stop troubleshooting and arrange service
- The phone rings but the screen stays blank: Google recommends contacting a local authorized repair center.
- Samsung restart and charging checks do not restore the display: Samsung advises seeking service.
- An iPhone still will not turn on after Apple’s restart and charging guidance: Apple says service may be needed.
- The phone has visible damage or was exposed to liquid: arrange a qualified assessment rather than assuming that software steps will address it.
Google offers authorized repair partners for Pixel screen, battery, and device repairs. Apple describes Apple-certified screen repairs using genuine Apple parts. Apple also warns that “Non-genuine replacement displays may have compromised visual quality and may fail to work correctly.” The right service route, coverage, availability, and cost depend on the device model and location; get a diagnosis and quote for your own phone before agreeing to a repair.
How to compare repair options
Once a repair is indicated, compare providers using the details that affect the result and the total cost:
- Authorization and parts: ask whether the provider is authorized for your manufacturer and what parts will be used.
- Diagnosis and model compatibility: confirm the proposed work is based on your exact model and a diagnosis, not just the symptom of a black screen.
- Warranty or coverage: ask how the repair affects any applicable coverage.
- Total cost and turnaround: request a complete quote and estimated repair time before proceeding.
- Local availability: confirm the service is available where you are.
There is no universal repair price or guaranteed outcome for a black screen; the cause, model, and location matter.
