Error: Flash Download failed – Target DLL has been cancelled is a generic failure message, not a diagnosis: it does not tell you whether the problem is board power, the debugger connection, PC drivers, target selection, or flash configuration. Check those items in that order, starting with safe, reversible checks. The same message appears in reports involving different microcontrollers and tools, so the full log and hardware details matter more than the final line alone.
What does “Error: Flash Download failed – Target DLL has been cancelled” mean?
It means the flash-download operation stopped, but the message does not identify why. Reports involving an LPC2148 with Keil, an Infineon evaluation kit, and an NXP QN902x guide illustrate that the wording is not specific to one target or one underlying fault. See the NXP community case, Infineon TLE9893 eval-kit case, and NXP QN902x Quick Start Guide.
Do not conclude from this line alone that the microcontroller is bricked or the probe is broken. The diagnostic clues are usually the messages immediately before it, along with the board, probe, IDE, and target setup.

- Board model and exact MCU part number
- IDE name and version
- Debugger or probe model, and whether the connection uses SWD or JTAG
- How the target board and probe are powered, including the target voltage if known
- The full text immediately preceding the cancellation
These details help separate a connection failure from a target or flash-algorithm mismatch. The same final line has appeared in different support contexts, while the preceding output and hardware differ.
Check the target board’s power
Confirm that the target itself receives the supply required by its board documentation. USB may power an onboard debugger without supplying the target circuitry at the voltage needed for programming.

- 5.5.Tips: Some chips are affected by peripheral circuits and cannot be clipped directly. Please check the chip location on the motherboard before purchasing!
For example, a user troubleshooting an Infineon TLE9893_2QK evaluation kit reported that connecting the board’s 12V input as well as USB resolved that case. That is specific to that kit and setup—not a general instruction to apply 12V to other boards. Follow the power requirements for your own board, and do not connect an unverified supply.
Check the debugger cable, orientation, and PC detection
With power safely off when the board documentation calls for it, verify the physical debug connection before changing IDE settings.

- Support 24 EEPROM and 25 SPI flash 8pin or 16pin chip.
- Carry CH341A chip, which can recognize 25 series chip.
- Support downloading STC series procedure of single chip.
- Indicate 24/ 25 status with lamp.
- Support expanding the utility by SPI pin.
- Confirm the cable is aligned with the connector’s pin 1 and is not reversed.
- Check that the connector pinout matches the board header and the probe cable.
- Verify ground and the required SWD or JTAG signals are connected.
- Make sure the selected interface matches the wiring and target configuration.
- Check that the computer recognizes the probe and that its required driver is installed.
An NXP employee’s checklist for an LPC2148/Keil report with this exact error includes confirming target power, debugger wiring and mapping, PC-side drivers, and project memory or flash-driver settings. The NXP response is a practical checklist, not proof that any one item causes all occurrences.
If the board has an onboard debugger, follow its board-specific instructions to choose that probe and port. In a KitProg/Keil support thread, an Infineon moderator suggested checking Device Manager and selecting KitProg in Port Setup; the user later reported debugging still failed. Treat those as initial checks, not a guaranteed fix. See the Infineon KitProg and Keil discussion.

Verify the selected target and flash programming settings
Once power and probe detection look right, check that the project is configured for the hardware actually connected.

In the IDE, verify the exact MCU or target device, the intended debug driver, and the connection interface. In Keil µVision, the debugger selected for debug and the driver enabled for flash programming must be appropriate to the setup. Check the flash algorithm and address range
Confirm that the selected flash programming algorithm supports the exact MCU’s flash device and covers the addresses used by the image. Check for incorrect overlaps with other configured algorithms. Keil lists missing or unsuitable algorithms, missing algorithm functions, insufficient or invalid RAM for the algorithm, and algorithm timeouts as distinct flash-programming error causes in its ULINK2 error messages guide.
If you use a different IDE, look for its equivalent target-device, programming algorithm, flash region, and algorithm-RAM settings rather than assuming Keil menu names apply.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Retry once after a specific correction
- Change the identified issue—for example, restore the board’s documented power, correct a cable orientation, install the probe driver, select the right target, or fix an algorithm or address-range mismatch.
- Retry the flash download and save the new complete log.
- If it still fails, capture the relevant target, debugger, and flash settings and contact the board or probe vendor with the board and MCU, probe, IDE version, interface, and target voltage.
A probe purchase is relevant only if the existing probe is absent, faulty, or unsupported. Before choosing an external SWD/JTAG probe, verify exact MCU and board support, interface, connector and pinout, target-voltage compatibility, PC drivers, and IDE support. A new probe will not correct a board-power problem or a misconfigured flash algorithm.
