Use a correlated timeline, not a single log line. Start with LiteLLM request and audit logs, then join each event to reverse-proxy or WAF records, identity-provider events, PostgreSQL logs, host process activity, network egress, and spend telemetry. Investigate mismatched identities or source networks, changes made outside an approved window, calls to administrative endpoints, SQL syntax inside Bearer values, unfamiliar user agents or destinations, and abrupt changes in model use or cost.

A successful HTTP 200 response is not evidence that access was legitimate. A stolen LiteLLM key can authenticate normally, so attribution depends on who used it, from where, against which route, with what model and budget effect, and whether the activity matches an approved workload.

What proves that a LiteLLM administrator or key was used without authorization?

No single LiteLLM record proves misuse. The strongest evidence is a consistent timeline in which the authenticated principal or key alias, source address, route, and behavior conflict with your documented baseline or change record.

  • Identity mismatch: the actor, SSO subject, service account, key alias, or team is not associated with the administrator or workload expected to perform the action.
  • Network mismatch: the source IP or CIDR is outside the administrator’s normal locations, the workload’s approved egress ranges, or the deployment’s allowlist.
  • Change-window mismatch: key, team, model, role, or budget changes occur when no approved maintenance or onboarding work was scheduled.
  • Privilege mismatch: a low-privilege identity performs an administrative operation, or a newly issued key has broader permissions than the requestor should receive.
  • Behavior mismatch: model selection, request rate, provider destination, latency pattern, failures, or spend differs sharply from the workload baseline.

Preserve the original timestamps and event identifiers before rotating credentials. Rotation is necessary after suspected exposure, but it can erase the evidence needed to determine the first unauthorized use and its scope.

Build the expected identity and scope baseline first

Detection is only as good as the baseline against which events are compared. Maintain an inventory that can be checked during an incident rather than relying on memory.

Record administrators and service identities

  • List proxy administrators, team administrators, SSO or JWT subjects, and emergency accounts.
  • Assign each production workload its own service-account key. Separate keys make it possible to revoke one workload without interrupting unrelated applications.
  • Record key aliases or prefixes, owning team, intended routes, allowed models, budget, rate limits, and expiration or rotation dates.
  • Document which identities may create, delete, rotate, or modify keys, teams, models, roles, and budgets.

Record network and change expectations

  • Keep approved source CIDRs, reverse-proxy addresses, cloud egress ranges, and administrator locations.
  • Record normal provider destinations and the expected geographic or network origin of scheduled jobs.
  • Maintain a change calendar containing deployment, rotation, team-management, and model-policy windows.
  • Define the normal request volume, model mix, status-code distribution, latency range, and daily spend for each workload.

LiteLLM’s enterprise guidance recommends minimum RBAC roles, few proxy administrators, separate service-account keys, IP filtering, secret managers, and JWT identity mapping. Those controls make a later log investigation more attributable and reduce the number of identities that can legitimately perform a sensitive action.

Know which LiteLLM logs and fields matter

Request logs

A normal LiteLLM request record should identify the key, team, model, latency, and spend. For an investigation, retain those fields together with the request timestamp, route, status, response code, source IP, authenticated principal or key alias, user agent, and any available rate-limit or provider metadata.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The x-litellm-call-id response header is the most useful correlation identifier documented by LiteLLM. Capture it at the client or reverse proxy and carry it into your log pipeline. It lets you connect a request seen by LiteLLM with WAF, identity, database, provider, and application records even when timestamps differ slightly.

Audit logs

Audit records cover management actions such as key creation, deletion, rotation, team or model changes, budget changes, role changes, and login or SSO events. Licensed enterprise gateways enable audit logging by default unless store_audit_logs: false is configured. Verify the setting in the running configuration rather than assuming that a licensed deployment is collecting every event.

A practical coverage test is to create or select a disposable virtual key, delete it, and confirm that the deletion appears on the Audit Logs page with the expected actor and time. Perform this test in a maintenance window and remove the disposable object afterward.

Message and key metadata

Message logging may be disabled or redacted, and user API-key metadata may also be redacted. Missing prompt text therefore does not mean that the request is missing. Preserve non-content metadata—call ID, time, route, model, status, latency, spend, source, actor, and key alias—so that privacy controls do not destroy attribution.

Step-by-step detection workflow

1. Preserve evidence and establish the time range

  1. Record when the suspected leak was discovered, when the key was created or last rotated, and the earliest suspicious event.
  2. Export LiteLLM request and audit logs before changing retention, redaction, or storage settings.
  3. Export reverse-proxy or WAF, identity-provider, PostgreSQL, host-process, network-egress, provider, and billing records for a window that starts before the first suspicious event and ends after containment.
  4. Normalize timestamps to UTC while retaining each source’s original timestamp and timezone.

Keep the original files or immutable copies. Work from a copy so that parsing, filtering, and enrichment do not alter evidence.

2. Review administrative events before ordinary traffic

Search audit logs for key creation, deletion, and rotation; team, model, budget, and role changes; and login or SSO events. For every event, compare the actor, key or session, source IP, user agent, and timestamp with the approved change record.

Escalate a request from an identity that should not administer users, especially activity involving /users/list or /users/get_users. CVE-2025-0628 describes a failure mode in which an internal_user_viewer could receive an overly privileged key. A viewer performing user-enumeration or management operations is therefore a high-priority investigation even if the response status is successful.

Do not treat a valid administrator account as proof of legitimacy. Compare the login source, session timing, device or user-agent pattern, and subsequent actions with the person’s normal behavior and the change calendar.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Correlate every request with x-litellm-call-id

Group records by call ID where available, then by key alias or hashed key metadata, authenticated user, team, model, source IP, user agent, and time. A useful investigation row contains:

  • UTC timestamp and original timestamp
  • x-litellm-call-id
  • authenticated principal, key alias, and team
  • source IP and forwarding chain as recorded by the trusted proxy
  • HTTP method and route
  • model and provider destination
  • status and response code
  • latency, token or usage fields when retained, and spend
  • user agent and rate-limit result

Look for a sequence rather than an isolated request: a new source address, a user-listing call, key creation, then a burst of model traffic from the newly created key is considerably more suspicious than any one event alone.

4. Search Authorization values for exploit-shaped SQL

The Cloud Security Alliance SQL-injection advisory recommends inspecting Bearer values for SQL syntax. High-value indicators include a single quote, UNION, SELECT, FROM, WHERE, and comment forms such as -- or /**/. Search the WAF, reverse-proxy, and SIEM copies because application-level parsing may normalize or discard the original header.

These strings are not proof by themselves: a security scanner, test, or unusual but legitimate token could contain punctuation. Raise severity when the same source also produces authentication errors, administrative requests, database anomalies, or a successful response. The user agent Python/3.12 aiohttp/3.9.1 appears in the advisory as a weak correlation signal, not as a reliable signature. Do not block solely on that user agent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Check PostgreSQL activity

Review PostgreSQL query logs for UNION SELECT and reads against credential or configuration tables. Match database timestamps and connection details to LiteLLM call IDs or proxy request times where possible. An application log that shows only a failed request does not rule out a database-side attempt if the query was truncated, filtered, or logged by another component.

Capture the database role, client address, query duration, affected relation, and result status. Unexpected reads of tables containing provider credentials, virtual keys, or master-key configuration deserve immediate containment even when no key value appears in the LiteLLM log.

6. Inspect host processes and network egress

CVE-2026-42271 guidance specifically calls for process and egress review. Examine process-execution logs for unexpected shells, interpreters, download tools, child processes, or commands launched by the LiteLLM proxy account. Then inspect outbound connections for unfamiliar IP addresses, provider calls that are not part of the deployment’s normal route, and connections to cloud or Kubernetes control surfaces reachable from the host.

The June 2026 RCE advisory warns that arbitrary commands running as the proxy process can read API keys and provider credentials, intercept or modify LLM traffic, and pivot to cloud or Kubernetes systems accessible to that process. A clean request log cannot exclude this path because an attacker may read local configuration or secrets without making a normal API request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Compare behavior and spend with the workload baseline

Measure request counts, model choices, spend, rate-limit failures, latency, status codes, and provider destinations by key, team, source, and hour. Investigate sudden spend increases, unusually expensive or previously unused models, repeated authentication failures followed by success, or calls from unfamiliar IP ranges.

Use relative comparisons to the workload’s own history. No authoritative incident-rate statistic establishes how often these patterns occur, so a threshold should be tuned to your traffic rather than presented as a universal number.

How to interpret common findings

Finding What it may mean What to correlate next
Valid 200 responses from a new IP A stolen key may be used normally; HTTP success does not establish legitimacy. Key alias, actor, source history, model, spend, user agent, and provider destination.
Key or budget change outside a change window Unauthorized administration or a compromised administrator session. Audit actor, SSO login, source IP, route, and subsequent use of the changed object.
SQL tokens in a Bearer value Possible SQL-injection probing or exploitation. WAF copy, PostgreSQL queries, response status, and source recurrence.
/users/list or /users/get_users from a viewer Possible privilege abuse associated with the CVE-2025-0628 failure mode. Issued key permissions, actor, SSO event, and all objects returned or changed.
Unexpected subprocess or outbound host connection Possible command execution, credential access, interception, or pivoting. Process parent, command line, destination, cloud or Kubernetes permissions, and local secrets.
Missing prompt content Logging or redaction may be enabled; it does not prove that the request is absent. Call ID, route, model, status, latency, spend, actor, and source metadata.

What a stolen LiteLLM key can expose

The Cloud Security Alliance SQL-injection note reports that LiteLLM credential tables may contain OpenAI organization keys, Anthropic console keys, AWS Bedrock credentials, virtual keys, and master keys. If an attacker reads those values, they may impersonate proxy users or call providers directly, bypassing proxy spend limits, content filters, and audit logging.

Provider credentials can therefore be more powerful than a LiteLLM virtual key. A virtual key may be limited by team budget or model policy, while an upstream credential could authorize direct provider access outside those controls. Treat the two layers as separate secrets during scoping and remediation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The June 2026 RCE note expands the impact beyond credential theft: code running as the proxy process may intercept or modify LLM traffic and pivot to cloud or Kubernetes systems that the process can reach. Review the proxy’s filesystem, environment, instance role, service-account permissions, mounted secrets, and network routes.

Containment and recovery sequence

1. Restrict exposure without destroying evidence

  1. Preserve logs, timestamps, configuration snapshots, and volatile host evidence.
  2. Restrict or isolate public exposure. Place LiteLLM behind an authenticated reverse proxy or API gateway; do not expose it directly to the internet.
  3. Block confirmed malicious source networks at the edge, while avoiding a broad block that could remove your own evidence-collection path.
  4. Disable compromised virtual keys and suspicious sessions.

2. Rotate every reachable credential

Revoke and reissue every LiteLLM virtual key and master key that could have been exposed, not only the key seen in the suspicious request. Rotate every provider credential accessible to the deployment, including credentials stored in the proxy’s database, environment, mounted files, secret manager, cloud role, or Kubernetes service account. The Cloud Security Alliance states that every virtual API key, master key, and upstream provider credential stored in an affected deployment should be rotated as a precaution.

Coordinate rotation with provider-side logs and billing so that direct calls made with extracted credentials are not mistaken for proxy traffic. After rotation, verify that old credentials fail and that new credentials are scoped to the minimum required models, teams, budgets, and destinations.

3. Patch and verify the running deployment

Upgrade to LiteLLM 1.83.7 or later for the cited 2026 SQL-injection and RCE advisories. Verify the version actually running in the production container or process; changing a lockfile or image tag without confirming the live process does not establish remediation. Review the startup command, image digest, dependency layer, and rollout status.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Rebuild trust in logging

Keep audit logging enabled and send logs to a durable SIEM or object store with access controls and retention appropriate to your incident policy. Retain x-litellm-call-id, key and team prefixes where useful, source and actor metadata, route, model, status, latency, and spend. Apply message-content and user-key redaction when privacy requirements demand it, but test that attribution fields remain searchable.

Detection coverage by telemetry source

Telemetry Best evidence Attribution quality Alert latency Privacy and retention considerations Detects valid-but-abusive key use?
LiteLLM audit logs Key, role, team, model, budget, and login changes High when actor and source are retained Near real time when streamed Requires audit storage; disabled storage can create a gap Sometimes; strongest for administrative actions
LiteLLM request logs Route, model, status, latency, spend, key, and team High with call ID and source metadata Near real time or batch, depending on pipeline Message and key metadata may be redacted Yes, through behavior and source anomalies
Reverse proxy or WAF Original headers, source IP, edge decisions, and exploit strings High for network origin; lower for human identity Immediate Retain raw headers securely; avoid unrestricted content access Yes, including successful requests
Identity provider SSO, JWT, MFA, session, and sign-in context High for human or workload identity Usually near real time Retention and privacy rules vary by provider Indirectly, by linking identity to use
PostgreSQL Credential-table reads and SQL-injection effects High for database role and client Depends on query logging configuration Verbose logs can contain sensitive values Indirectly; reveals extraction attempts
Host process and egress Command execution, secret reads, pivots, and unfamiliar destinations High for process account and destination Near real time with endpoint telemetry Requires careful retention and access control Yes, even when no normal API request is logged
Spend and provider telemetry Direct provider calls, model shifts, and cost anomalies High for provider account; lower for human actor Minutes to hours Billing data may have delayed availability Yes, especially after credential extraction

Alert design that avoids noisy rules

Use layered detections rather than a single blocklist. A practical high-severity rule requires two or more independent signals, such as SQL syntax in a Bearer value plus a PostgreSQL credential-table read, or an out-of-range source plus an administrative key change and an immediate spend spike.

  • Administrative anomaly: alert when a key, team, role, model, or budget changes outside an approved window or from an unapproved source.
  • Privilege anomaly: alert when a viewer or service account invokes user-management routes or receives a key with broader permissions than its baseline.
  • Header anomaly: alert on SQL syntax in Authorization values at the edge and preserve the raw header for investigation.
  • Behavior anomaly: alert on a new source CIDR, unusual model, sudden spend increase, provider destination change, or a burst after a key is created.
  • Host anomaly: alert on unexpected child processes, secret-file access, or outbound connections from the proxy account.

Test rules with a disposable key and a benign administrative change. Confirm that the event reaches the SIEM, includes the call ID and actor metadata, and can be joined to the corresponding LiteLLM record.

Operational checklist

  • Is store_audit_logs enabled in the live configuration?
  • Does every request retain x-litellm-call-id or an equivalent correlation value?
  • Are proxy administrators, service accounts, key aliases, source CIDRs, model allowlists, and change windows documented?
  • Can you search raw Authorization headers at the WAF or reverse proxy?
  • Are PostgreSQL query, host-process, egress, identity, provider, and spend logs retained outside the LiteLLM host?
  • Can you distinguish a human administrator, service account, virtual key, and master key in every alert?
  • Have you tested deletion of a disposable virtual key and verified its audit record?
  • Can you revoke and reissue all LiteLLM and provider credentials without losing the evidence needed for scoping?
  • Is the running deployment on LiteLLM 1.83.7 or later, and has the live version been verified after rollout?

Bottom line

LiteLLM logs can show that a key or administrator performed an action, but they rarely prove intent alone. Confidence comes from joining audit and request records—especially x-litellm-call-id—with identity, edge, database, host, egress, provider, and spend telemetry. Investigate valid responses as seriously as failures, treat SQL-shaped Authorization values as high-value indicators, and rotate both LiteLLM and upstream provider credentials whenever the deployment or its secrets may have been exposed.
