Detecting an OAuth-related server-side request forgery (SSRF) in SAP requires joining evidence, not searching for a single event name. Confirm which SAP product and release are involved, verify that outbound HTTP logging covered the incident window, then correlate SAP application and ICM/Web Dispatcher records with DNS, proxy, firewall and flow telemetry. An unusual destination can show an attempted server-side connection; proving SSRF and impact requires demonstrating that untrusted input influenced the destination and determining what the target returned.

Use the procedure below for SAP NetWeaver AS ABAP and related Web Dispatcher deployments. S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition has a different Security Audit Log retrieval model, and SAP does not document a universal cross-product OAuth2 SSRF signature.

What counts as OAuth2 SSRF in an SAP investigation?

OWASP API7:2023 describes SSRF as a server making a request to a destination influenced by untrusted input without adequate validation. The OAuth context may be the workflow that carries the input, but an OAuth login, redirect or token exchange is not itself proof of SSRF.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep three questions separate:

  • Was there server-side egress? Did an SAP process, ICM, Web Dispatcher or another runtime actually open a connection?
  • Was the destination attacker-influenced? Can you connect the destination URL, host, port or redirect to input that an untrusted user or system supplied?
  • Was there impact? Did the request reach a sensitive service, return data, follow a redirect, expose credentials or cause a state change?

A browser redirect from an SAP user agent to an authorization server is a different network leg from SAP-server traffic to a token or resource endpoint. Treat those legs independently. RFC 9700, the OAuth 2.0 Security Best Current Practice published in January 2025, recommends controls such as exact redirect-URI matching, PKCE for public clients, and protection against open redirects and mix-up attacks. Those controls reduce OAuth flow risks; they do not constitute an SSRF detector.

Establish the SAP scope before collecting evidence

Record the facts that determine which logs can exist and what their fields mean. Do this before deciding that an absent entry proves anything.

  1. Identify the exact SAP product, release and support package. The references for ICM and Web Dispatcher logging cited here apply to specific SAP NetWeaver releases.
  2. Map the application component that handles the OAuth flow and identify whether outbound traffic leaves through ICM, SAP Web Dispatcher, an application runtime, a configured proxy or a separate integration service.
  3. List the configured OAuth issuer, authorization and token endpoints, resource servers, callback or redirect URIs, and every approved integration destination.
  4. Define the incident window and the timezone used by SAP, proxy, DNS, firewall and SIEM records. Record clock offsets if systems are not synchronized.
  5. Preserve the relevant user, client, job, interface and request identifiers available in the application. These identifiers are often more useful for attribution than a destination IP alone.

Do not assume that an S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition audit record has the same fields as an on-premises ICM client log. SAP documents retrieval of the cloud Security Audit Log separately at Retrieving Security Audit Log.

Know which evidence source answers which question

Evidence source What it can establish Important limitation
SAP application and OAuth logs Which user, client, job or code path initiated a flow; configured endpoint and application outcome when logged Field names and retention vary by product and release; secrets may be redacted or absent
ICM outbound client log Outbound HTTP request details when client logging was enabled and matched the request Separate configuration from inbound logging; may not cover traffic that bypasses ICM
ICM/Web Dispatcher security log Protocol, syntax, access and administration irregularities Not documented as a universal SSRF event or signature
dev_icm<n> and dev_wdisp traces Runtime context and troubleshooting detail around connections Formats differ; traces can contain security-relevant data and may omit request parameters
DNS, proxy, firewall and flow records Observed hostname resolution, destination IP, port, protocol, timing, allow/block result and egress volume NAT, load balancers, proxies and DNS can obscure the originating SAP process or final target
Configuration and integration inventory Whether a destination is expected and which component is authorized to use it An allowlist is a validation aid, not proof that an unexpected request was malicious

Use at least one SAP-side source and one network-side source wherever possible. A destination that appears only in a proxy log may have been generated by a different host; a SAP entry without matching network telemetry may reflect a blocked, cached or failed connection.

Verify outbound logging coverage in ICM and Web Dispatcher

SAP documents inbound and outbound HTTP logging as separate configurations. The inbound vector is icm/HTTP/logging_<xx>; outbound client logging uses icm/HTTP/logging_client_<xx>. The logging handler is not activated by default in the cited SAP context, so inspect the actual parameter state rather than assuming a log exists.

SAP’s documentation summarizes the capability as follows: “To get an overview of the functions and workload on the ICM or Web Dispatcher, an access log can be created in inbound and outbound requests can be logged.” See Logging in the ICM and SAP Web Dispatcher and the parameter reference for icm/HTTP/logging_<xx>.

Check the client log in SMICM

  1. Open transaction SMICM on the relevant SAP system.
  2. Choose Goto → HTTP Plug-In → Client Logs.
  3. Confirm that the displayed entries cover the incident dates and the instance that could have initiated the request.
  4. Record the configured format, filters, file rotation and retention. Export the original entries without changing timestamps or line order.
  5. Compare the client-log configuration with the process topology. A request sent through an external proxy or a runtime that does not use the ICM client may not appear.

Check whether logging was enabled for the entire period, not merely when the incident was discovered. If the handler was enabled after the suspected request, the resulting entries cannot reconstruct earlier traffic.

Preserve configuration context

Save the effective parameter values, instance names and configuration-change history with the log files. Document which logging vector matched the request and which did not. This prevents an analyst from treating an inbound access log as evidence of an outbound server fetch.

Collect security logs and traces as supporting evidence

The ICM security log parameter icm/security_log can record irregularities such as malformed syntax, attempts to access nonexistent objects, denied access and Web administration logon errors. Review it around the suspected request, but do not label a security-log line an SSRF finding by itself. SAP describes the parameter in its icm/security_log documentation.

Gather only the relevant portions of dev_icm<n> and dev_wdisp, along with instance and process identifiers. The SAP guidance on trace files and log files warns that ICF traces can contain security-relevant information. Restrict access, preserve originals, and use a sanitized working copy for broad analysis.

One SAP parameter reference notes that form fields and URI parameters are not written to the trace file for security reasons. Exact behavior depends on the configured handler, format and release. Therefore, a trace that lacks a query parameter does not establish that no parameter was supplied.

  1. Start with the initiating event. Locate the inbound request, OAuth authorization response, token request, scheduled job or interface invocation that could have triggered the fetch.
  2. Attach SAP context. Add the available user, client ID, session, work process, job, interface and application-correlation identifiers. Do not copy access tokens, client secrets or authorization codes into an incident report.
  3. Locate the outbound client entry. Match request time, SAP instance and destination fields in the ICM client log. If no entry exists, mark coverage as unknown rather than “no request.”
  4. Join network records. Match the SAP host or egress NAT address to proxy, firewall, DNS and flow records. Include DNS query and response times, resolved addresses, destination port and protocol, proxy decisions, TLS metadata where retained, response status and byte counts.
  5. Follow redirects and retries. A token or resource request can produce a redirect or repeated failures. Record every observed hop and determine whether the SAP component followed it.
  6. Separate user-agent traffic from server egress. A browser reaching an authorization endpoint does not prove that the SAP server contacted that endpoint or any internal address.

DNS resolution, NAT, load balancers and forward proxies can change the address visible at each layer. Correlate at the correct layer and identify which system actually opened the connection.

Analyze destinations without treating heuristics as signatures

Compare each observed destination with the approved OAuth and integration inventory. The following observations are investigative leads:

  • A hostname or IP not used by the documented issuer, token endpoint, resource server or integration partner.
  • A scheme, port or protocol that the application does not normally use.
  • A redirect to a different host, especially when the redirect target is outside the approved destination set.
  • Requests to address ranges or hostnames representing internal administration, metadata or loopback services, where such traffic is not part of the documented design.
  • Repeated attempts with changing hosts, ports or URL forms after a user-controlled value was submitted.
  • Unusual timing, egress volume or response patterns immediately after an OAuth request.
  • Proxy or firewall denies that show a connection attempt even though no successful response was received.

None of these is a universal SAP indicator. A certificate rollover, service-discovery change, scheduled integration, proxy misconfiguration or legitimate endpoint migration can look unusual. Validate every lead against application configuration and the integration owner.

Distinguish an attempted connection from impact

Finding What it supports What remains unproven
Outbound request logged by SAP and blocked by a firewall An attempted connection from the SAP path Whether the target received it or returned data
Proxy or flow record shows a completed connection and response Network reachability and an observed response That an attacker controlled the destination or that sensitive data was disclosed
Destination is outside the approved integration inventory A configuration or input-validation anomaly requiring investigation Malicious intent or SSRF without evidence of input influence
Application logs tie a user-supplied URL to the outbound destination Evidence that untrusted input influenced the fetch target Impact, unless response and target effects are established
Target service logs show the request and returned sensitive content Stronger evidence of reachability and potential impact The complete scope of exposure until credentials, tokens and downstream actions are reviewed

Classify the incident only after confirming the originating code path and the input-to-destination relationship. A successful HTTP status alone does not prove that sensitive data was returned, stored or disclosed.

Test alternative explanations before declaring an attack

Ask the integration owner to confirm whether the destination was expected at that time. Check for:

  • Issuer, token-endpoint or resource-server changes approved during the incident window.
  • Proxy, certificate, DNS or load-balancer changes that altered the observed host or address.
  • Service discovery or health-check behavior that legitimately generated outbound requests.
  • Scheduled jobs, background retries or queue consumers unrelated to the user-facing OAuth action.
  • Changes in URL normalization, redirect handling or allowlist configuration.

For an apparently unauthorized request, determine whether it reached the destination, which response bytes were returned, whether SAP followed a redirect, and whether credentials, OAuth tokens, internal metadata or other sensitive material could have been exposed. Preserve target-side logs when available and keep secrets out of tickets and reports.

Use network telemetry to find what SAP logs miss

Network visibility is especially valuable when outbound client logging was disabled, a request bypassed ICM, or application logs omit the final destination. Query DNS logs for lookups made by the SAP host or its resolver during the incident window. Compare the queried name with the name in the HTTP or proxy record and with the address eventually contacted.

Proxy logs can add the HTTP method, full host, response status, redirect chain, authentication result and policy decision. Firewall and flow records can show denied attempts, destination ports, byte counts and connection duration even when an HTTP parser saw no request. If TLS inspection is not available, use SNI, certificate metadata and flow timing only as supporting clues; do not infer a URL path that the telemetry did not record.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For NAT or shared egress, map the translated address back to the SAP instance using firewall session data. For load-balanced targets, retain both the public service name and the resolved backend identity when the network design exposes them. Keep a record of collection gaps so an analyst does not mistake a missing network record for a missing request.

Handle OAuth-specific evidence correctly

Review the authorization request, callback, token exchange and resource request as separate transactions. Confirm that redirect URIs were matched exactly as configured, that public clients used PKCE where applicable, and that open-redirect or mix-up protections were in place. These checks follow the guidance in RFC 9700; they do not replace URL-validation analysis in any SAP component that performs a server-side fetch.

Look for an untrusted value crossing a boundary such as a callback parameter, issuer or discovery URL, resource URL, tenant URL, webhook, proxy setting or imported integration configuration. Then show how the value reached the code that opened the outbound connection. If the only evidence is a normal browser redirect to the registered authorization server, classify it as OAuth traffic, not SSRF.

Investigate S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition separately

In S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition, retrieve the Security Audit Log using the documented service and properties for that environment: SAP’s Security Audit Log retrieval guidance. Confirm the tenant, retention period, filters and available event fields.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not infer that a cloud audit event named for OAuth, HTTP or authorization is a cross-product SSRF signature. Join cloud audit records with the service’s application logs, integration monitoring and tenant-approved network telemetry. If the managed service does not expose destination-level egress data, record that limitation and obtain evidence from the configured integration or proxy layer.

Preserve and report evidence safely

  1. Export original logs in their native format and hash the files if your incident process requires integrity verification.
  2. Record collection time, source system, instance, timezone, retention policy and any filtering applied.
  3. Restrict access to traces and client logs because they may contain security-relevant headers, identifiers or URLs.
  4. Redact secrets only in an analysis copy; retain the protected original under the incident team’s evidence controls.
  5. Document missing logging, rotated files, clock drift, proxy blind spots and any component that could bypass ICM.
  6. Write conclusions with confidence levels: observed connection, attempted connection, confirmed input influence, confirmed target response and confirmed data exposure.

A practical detection checklist

  • Product, release, topology and incident timezone are documented.
  • Approved OAuth and integration destinations are current and versioned.
  • icm/HTTP/logging_client_<xx> status and coverage are verified for the affected period.
  • SMICM Client Logs were checked on every relevant instance.
  • icm/security_log, dev_icm<n> and dev_wdisp were reviewed with restricted access.
  • Application, DNS, proxy, firewall and flow records are joined on time and origin.
  • Redirects, retries, destination ports, protocols and response sizes were examined.
  • Untrusted input was traced to the server-side fetch before labeling the event SSRF.
  • Blocked attempts are separated from successful responses and data exposure.
  • Alternative explanations and approved change records were checked.
  • Secrets and sensitive trace content were protected throughout the investigation.

What a defensible conclusion looks like

A strong finding states exactly what the evidence proves. For example: an SAP application request carrying a user-controlled URL was followed by an ICM client connection to a host outside the approved inventory; the proxy recorded a redirect and the firewall allowed the first connection. That supports a likely SSRF path and confirmed reachability of the first destination, while the redirect target and any data exposure require separate confirmation.

A weaker statement would be “an OAuth SSRF occurred” based only on an OAuth audit event or an unusual IP. Keep the distinction explicit so remediation teams can fix input validation, redirect handling, allowlists, proxy policy and credential exposure according to the evidence actually collected.
