Detecting Kerberos ticket forgery requires more than finding one unusual logon. Collect Security events 4768 and 4769 from every domain controller, correlate the normal ticket sequence, and then test identity, ticket, encryption, host, and resource context. A 4769 service-ticket request with no plausible preceding 4768 can expose a forged Golden Ticket, but incomplete collection and alternate authentication paths can create the same gap. Silver Tickets require additional endpoint and service-side evidence because a forged service ticket can be used without contacting the Key Distribution Center (KDC).
Use these signals as investigation leads, not automatic proof. A capable attacker can forge ticket fields that look legitimate, and unusual encryption, lifetime, or group data can also come from legacy systems or unusual service configurations.
What Golden Ticket and Silver Ticket attacks forge
Golden Tickets forge the domain authentication step
A Golden Ticket is a forged Kerberos ticket-granting ticket (TGT). The TGT normally comes from a domain controller after a client authenticates. It can then be exchanged for service tickets to access resources throughout the domain. An attacker who obtains the KRBTGT account secret can create a TGT without requesting one from the KDC, potentially claiming an existing or nonexistent identity and privileged group membership.
Because the forged TGT may bypass the normal issuance event, domain-controller telemetry can show later service-ticket activity without the expected TGT request. That pattern is useful, but it is not conclusive: missing collection, retention gaps, clock problems, a different authentication path, or activity recorded on another domain controller can also break the apparent sequence.

Silver Tickets forge access to one service
A Silver Ticket is a forged Kerberos service ticket. It is created with a service account or computer account key and targets a particular service, host, or service principal name. MITRE notes that the ticket can be presented without interaction with the KDC, so a detector that watches only domain-controller ticket requests can miss it. See MITRE ATT&CK’s Silver Ticket technique.
Silver Ticket investigations therefore combine destination-service logs, endpoint logons, account-use baselines, and ticket-field validation. The absence of a KDC request is compatible with a Silver Ticket, but by itself does not establish one.
Telemetry and prerequisites
Before writing detections, verify that the underlying data can answer the questions you intend to ask. MITRE classifies Kerberos credential-request events as Active Directory Credential Request data; its data-component page is at DC0084.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Audit every domain controller. Enable Kerberos auditing and collect Security events 4768 and 4769 from all domain controllers, not just the one closest to a monitoring system.
- Centralize the events. Forward records to a SIEM or other analysis platform with enough retention to reconstruct user, computer, service, and ticket activity across controllers.
- Check time and identity context. Validate time synchronization, domain and forest identifiers, source addresses, client names, service names, account status, and directory group membership.
- Confirm parser compatibility. Microsoft documents an update to the 4768 schema for supported Windows Server systems that received the January 14, 2025 or later cumulative update. Inspect the event version and fields emitted by your servers before deploying parsers or rules. The event reference is Microsoft’s 4768 documentation.
- Measure collection completeness. Record which controllers, endpoints, and services send data, how long records are retained, and whether forwarding drops or delays events. A correlation rule that assumes perfect visibility will generate misleading results.
Understand the normal Kerberos sequence
| Event | What it records | How it helps |
|---|---|---|
| 4768 | A Kerberos authentication ticket (TGT) was requested from a domain controller. | Establishes expected KDC issuance for a principal and client. |
| 4769 | A Kerberos service ticket (TGS) was requested. | Shows a principal seeking access to a service such as a file server, host, or application. |
| Endpoint or service logon | The destination accepted or processed authentication. | Provides the service-side evidence needed when a forged ticket never reaches the KDC. |
Ordinary Kerberos activity commonly follows a 4768 TGT request and then one or more 4769 service-ticket requests. Build correlation around the principal, client, domain controller, service, and a reasonable time window. Allow for clock skew, event delivery delay, ticket reuse, and collection gaps. The government guide Detecting and Mitigating Active Directory Compromises describes this sequence and its limitations.

Step-by-step detection workflow
1. Establish the baseline
Measure normal TGT and service-ticket behavior before alerting. Identify common client subnets, domain controllers, service accounts, encryption types, ticket lifetimes, and services used by each user or computer. Separate interactive users from scheduled tasks, applications, trusts, and legacy devices. Baselines should be specific enough to expose an outlier without treating every uncommon account as malicious.
2. Correlate 4768 and 4769 events
- For each 4769, identify the requesting principal, client address or computer, target service, domain, and event time.
- Search the relevant domain-controller data for a plausible 4768 for the same principal and client within the normal window.
- Account for legitimate reuse of a previously issued TGT and for records that may have been collected by a different controller.
- Raise an investigation when a service-ticket request has no expected TGT, especially when several other anomalies point to the same identity, host, or destination.
- Preserve the raw events and document which controllers and time ranges were actually available.
A missing 4768 is a lead, not a verdict. A Golden Ticket can skip KDC issuance, but incomplete logging can produce the same observation.
3. Check identity and authorization consistency
Compare the ticket and logon identity with directory state. Investigate a username or account that does not exist, a disabled or deleted principal appearing active, or claimed authorization data that does not match the account’s current group memberships. A forged ticket may carry administrator or other privileged groups that are absent from the directory object. Capture the directory state at the time of investigation because legitimate membership changes can otherwise look contradictory.
4. Examine lifetime and time fields
Look for an unusually long lifetime, start time, end time, renewal setting, or other time value compared with the organization’s normal Kerberos policy and the account’s peers. Do not alert on duration alone: service accounts, trusts, policy exceptions, and clock errors can create valid outliers. A time anomaly becomes more persuasive when combined with an absent 4768, an impossible identity, or an unexpected source host.

5. Compare encryption behavior
Review the encryption type used by the ticket and compare it with the user, computer, and service baseline. Unexpected RC4 use in an environment that normally uses stronger encryption deserves investigation, as do abrupt changes in a principal’s normal encryption pattern. Legacy applications may legitimately require older algorithms, so establish exceptions and verify the service configuration before treating a downgrade as compromise.
6. Validate malformed or blank fields
Inspect relevant Kerberos and logon records for malformed, empty, or internally inconsistent fields. Examples include missing account or service values, identifiers that do not agree across events, and ticket data that cannot be parsed by the operating system. Such defects can result from parser problems or event-version differences, so first compare the raw event with the collector’s normalized representation.
7. Add service and endpoint evidence for Silver Tickets
For the destination service, review successful and failed logons, process activity, resource access, and account use. Compare the service account’s source hosts and requested resources with its established pattern. Investigate a service account authenticating from a workstation when it normally runs on a small set of servers, or accessing a host, share, database, or administrative interface outside its normal scope.

8. Use product alerts as corroboration
Microsoft Defender for Identity documents Golden Ticket alerts for nonexistent accounts, ticket anomalies, time anomalies, and encryption behavior. Its encryption-behavior detection learns normal user and computer encryption patterns and has a five-day learning period after domain-controller monitoring begins. Treat those alerts as one evidence source and confirm which sensors, controllers, and alert types are enabled in your deployment. Documentation is available at Microsoft Defender for Identity classic security alerts.
Golden Ticket indicators to investigate together
- Service ticket without expected TGT: A 4769 has no plausible preceding 4768 after collection coverage and ticket reuse are checked.
- Nonexistent principal: The ticket or logon names an account that is not present in the domain.
- Directory mismatch: Claimed group membership, authorization data, account status, or identifiers conflict with Active Directory.
- Unexpected lifetime: Start, expiry, or renewal values differ materially from policy and peer behavior.
- Encryption anomaly: The ticket uses an algorithm that is weak or unusual for that principal, host, or service.
- Malformed data: Fields are blank, inconsistent, or structurally invalid after raw-event validation.
- Context mismatch: The identity appears from an unusual client, accesses unfamiliar services, or performs privileged activity outside its normal pattern.
No single item proves a Golden Ticket. Stronger cases combine the event sequence with identity, ticket, encryption, and host context.

Why KDC-only rules fail
A forged service ticket can be presented directly to the target service. There may be no 4769 request to correlate, even though the service records a successful Kerberos logon. A rule that says every accepted ticket must have a matching domain-controller event will either miss this attack or incorrectly classify legitimate local behavior.

What to compare
- Service-account use from expected versus unexpected source hosts.
- Access to resources and service principal names outside the account’s normal scope.
- Ticket identity, service name, encryption, lifetime, and authorization data compared with directory and service configuration.
- Endpoint process and logon evidence surrounding the authentication.
- Malformed or blank ticket fields, after confirming that the collector did not cause the defect.
MITRE’s technique description at T1558.002 explains why the KDC may have no record of a Silver Ticket. The absence of that record supports a hypothesis only when service-side anomalies make the hypothesis plausible.

Detection approaches compared
| Approach | Primary visibility | Best coverage | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4768-to-4769 correlation | Domain-controller Security logs | Golden Ticket activity that bypasses normal TGT issuance | Fails with incomplete collection, ticket reuse, alternate authentication, or Silver Tickets. |
| Ticket-field and identity checks | Domain-controller, endpoint, and normalized ticket data | Nonexistent accounts, group mismatches, lifetime anomalies, malformed fields | Attackers can imitate plausible values; legacy systems create outliers. |
| Encryption baseline | Kerberos events and identity-monitoring telemetry | Unexpected RC4 or other changes in a principal’s normal behavior | Requires a learning period and exceptions for legacy services. |
| Service and endpoint correlation | Destination service and host logs | Silver Tickets and forged tickets accepted without KDC contact | Coverage varies by service, endpoint agent, log retention, and parser quality. |
| Identity-product alerts | Monitored domain controllers and identity sensors | Packaged Golden Ticket anomaly detections | Alert availability depends on product configuration and deployment coverage. |
Reducing false positives
- Do not alert solely because a 4769 lacks a nearby 4768; first verify all-controller collection, time synchronization, retention, and ticket reuse.
- Maintain documented exceptions for legacy encryption, trusts, scheduled tasks, service accounts, and applications with unusual lifetimes.
- Join events on stable identity and host fields, not only usernames. Reused names, aliases, and parser normalization can create false matches.
- Use a risk score or investigation queue that increases priority when several independent signals agree.
- Keep raw Security events so analysts can distinguish a genuine malformed ticket from a parser or schema problem.
- Re-baseline after major domain, application, encryption-policy, or service-account changes.
What to do when evidence is credible
Treat a credible forged-ticket finding as a possible Active Directory credential compromise, not as an isolated failed login. Preserve domain-controller, endpoint, service, identity, and network telemetry. Determine which account or host secret could have been obtained, whether the same identity was used elsewhere, and what resources were accessed.
Escalate through the organization’s incident-response process and consult current Microsoft recovery guidance. The government guidance discusses changing the KRBTGT password twice after suspected compromise, but this is a coordinated recovery action rather than a quick detection fix. Ticket invalidation, replication, timing, trusts, and application dependencies must be validated before making the change. Microsoft’s current Active Directory guidance is published in its Windows Server guidance.
Operational checklist
- All domain controllers send 4768 and 4769 events to centralized storage.
- Event versions and fields match the parser, including the post-January 14, 2025 4768 schema where applicable.
- Retention covers the investigation window, and clocks are synchronized.
- Baselines exist for principals, clients, services, lifetimes, and encryption types.
- Rules identify missing expected TGTs but label them as leads.
- Directory group membership and account status are available for comparison.
- Endpoint and destination-service logs are enabled for Silver Ticket investigations.
- Identity-monitoring alerts and their five-day learning requirement are understood.
- Incident-response contacts and current KRBTGT recovery procedures are documented.
Bottom line
Use 4768/4769 correlation to find Golden Ticket leads, then confirm them with directory, ticket, time, encryption, and host context. Detect Silver Tickets by following the service account and destination endpoint rather than waiting for a KDC request. Because forged tickets can be made to look normal, reliable detection depends on complete multi-controller logging, carefully maintained baselines, and coordinated incident response.
